As I gazed at the night sky in McCall, my thoughts drifted back to my life in Mexico. It was just a year ago that I lived in constant fear and looked over my shoulder every moment of the day. My father, once the king of the cartel, lost his power due to his greed. He forced me to move here to hide until things settled down, but I knew deep down that one day, the consequences of his actions would catch up with him.
I was raised on the border close to Juarez, where the surrounding people perceived me as a foreigner due to my blonde hair and blue eyes. They questioned whether I truly belonged to the Leon bloodline. It seems my father also harbored some resentment toward me for the same reason. Perhaps he also had doubts about my paternity.
My name is Mia Leon, daughter of Felix Leon, a man feared by many. He had gained the nickname "life snatcher" due to his lack of compassion and unwillingness to show any sort of weakness, even towards his own family. He had even killed his own uncle over a card game. As for me, I was always a burden to him. His only interests were drugs, money, women, and being the ruler of the cartel.
My thoughts were broken when my friend Kara spoke.
"Mia, you should get home. Tonight's a full moon."
I took a quick look at her seated beside me on the rock. She was my closest friend and was a vision of beauty, with long black hair that cascaded down her back in loose waves, dark as the night sky, and it framed her face in a way that accentuated her striking features. Her eyes were the color of the earth, deep and dark, with a hint of mystery that drew you in.
Her skin was smooth and golden, a testament to her Native American heritage. Her features were delicate and refined, with high cheekbones and a strong jawline that would make even the most gorgeous girl jealous.
I knew when we met that we would form a bond unbreakable. She was the only one who knew the identity of my father and what he was really like before moving here, and she never told a soul, not even her father, whom she trusted deeply. Maybe because he was a sheriff. That could end badly, especially for me. I had already lost everything in my life and Kara knew I needed him, not because he cared for me as her dad did for her, but because I was close to eighteen and I would have only ended up on the streets. And her father never would have allowed us to be friends if he knew what a shitty person Felix was.
Kara sometimes acted strangely during full moons, talking about the things that go bump in the night, warning me to avoid the forest. However, I found solace in nature because I knew that upon returning home, I would be greeted with an empty house and yet another lonely night.
"Why? So I can be alone?" I sighed. "No thanks."
Kara declared, "It's better than being caught by them."
"Kara, who are 'they'? You always mention them, but never disclose their identity," I asked.
She stood up and extended her hand toward me. "It's better if you don't find out."
I shook my head but accepted her help. "I worry sometimes about your sanity." I laughed, and she pushed me playfully.
As we journeyed through the town, the sun was setting behind the mountains. Its radiance illuminated the sky with a stunning array of purple, pink, and orange hues that resembled an oil painting. I couldn't help but acknowledge that the skies in Idaho were far more beautiful than those at home.
As we reached the fork in the road where Kara and I would part ways, she blew me a kiss and said, "See you tomorrow."
"Night, Kara," I said while making a heart shape with my fingers before we parted ways.

I walked through the door and threw my coat on the chair before heading towards the kitchen. I called out, "Felix?", but as usual, there was no response. I couldn't remember a time I ever called my father dad. He always told me to, but it never felt right.
I sighed, opened the fridge, and took out a bottle of water. Then I went upstairs to my room, sat on the bed, and pulled out my phone.
I sent a text asking, "Did you make it home?" Shortly after, I saw three little bubbles indicating she was typing a response.
"Yeah. You?"
"Yep. But like always, it's empty."
"Sorry, your dad can be a real asshole."
I sighed heavily and said, "He's a selfish person. If those things you keep talking about were to kill me, he would likely celebrate my demise."
Kara's bubbles appeared again. "Hey, come on. Just because he isn't there most of the time doesn't mean he would want something bad to happen to you."
I laughed to myself and then typed back. "Somehow, I doubt he would even notice I was gone." I stopped and considered my father's behavior towards me. It resembled Cinderella's story, except my father was still alive and played the role of the cruel, non-stepparent. "I'm heading to bed. See you at school tomorrow."
"Night, Mia."
"Night."
After turning off the light, I lay in bed and stared at my ceiling for what seemed to be about an hour before suddenly a loud crash came from downstairs. Startled, I sat upright and looked around anxiously, but gradually, I got out of bed and tiptoed down the stairs to investigate.
It couldn't have been my father, I thought, surprised by his early arrival. For a moment, the idea of running crossed my mind. If it was the cartel, I figured my odds of escaping into the Idaho darkness were better than my chances of staying here.
I continued, hoping that whoever was there wouldn't notice me. My hand tightly gripped the handle of the door, but I couldn't bring myself to open it and run out.
The atmosphere was currently silent, which made me figure that whoever was here had got what they came for. However, I decided it was best to text Kara since her dad was a sheriff.
I pulled out my phone from my pajama pocket and promptly messaged Kara, knowing my dad wouldn't be helpful. It was probable that my father was intoxicated at a strip club somewhere.
"Kar, someone is in my house."
"What?! You have to get out of the house!" She rapidly replied.
"Call your dad, please," I begged, thinking that if I called the police, the cartel would hear me.
"Okay, get somewhere safe," She suggested, and then I pocketed my phone.
The fact that I was blonde proved useful, as it provided a convenient excuse for my occasional foolishness. I could easily attribute it to my hair color, and I was acting foolishly by succumbing to my curiosity and risking being discovered, only to find out who had caused all the noise.
When I reached my father's office, I only caught sight of a black tail that vanished through the shattered window as I turned the corner.
"Really?" I looked around. It was ravaged. "How could a dog do this?" I questioned myself.
"Mia?!" shouted Sheriff Black from the front door.
"In here," I called back.
Sheriff Black approached, his footsteps growing louder. "Mia, are you alright?" he asked as he entered the office.
I glanced at him before turning my attention back to the chaotic scene before us. "I'm fine," I replied. "But how is it possible for a dog to create this much havoc? Or perhaps the better question is, how did the dog shatter the window in the first place?"
"Dog?" Sheriff Black said, raising a questioning eyebrow.
"It went out the window," I said as I picked up a file full of papers from the floor and threw it onto my father's desk.
"I think you should stay with us tonight," he suggested.
I looked back at him, bewildered. "Because of a dog?"
Sheriff Black shook his head and said, "Let's talk about it when we get to the house." He then walked over to me and guided me toward the office door. I took one last glance back before Sheriff Black pulled me away.

We arrived at Kara's small cabin, located just off the hillside outside of town, and pulled into the driveway. As I stepped out of the car, Kara was already waiting for us on the porch.
"Are you okay, Mia?" asked Kara as she leaned over the railing.
I smiled at her as I walked up the steps. "Yeah."
She extended her hand and exclaimed, "Sleepover!" I chuckled as she pulled me into the house.
We went to her room, and Kara sat on the bed while I plopped down on a chair in the corner of her room and crossed my legs. She stared at me until I finally looked over at her.
I said, "What?" As I bit my nails.
"What happened?" Kara inquired as I reclined in my chair and let out a deep sigh.
"Well, would you believe it? A dog, yes, a four-legged furry creature that loves chasing its tail, suddenly turned into a human, broke a window, and went on a stealing spree. And just when you thought things couldn't get any stranger, the doggy delinquent transformed back into its original form and made a smooth exit through the very same window. Who says animals can't pull off a heist?"
She furrowed her brows and asked, "What?"
I shrugged and then burst into laughter. "I was joking Kar, calm down." I continued laughing. "I think the dog got in when someone broke the window after they stole whatever they came for." I declared.
Her lips were pressed together in a thin line, and her brow was furrowed in frustration. It was clear that she was not amused by my attempt at humor.
"Girls?" Mr. Black knocked on the door.
"Come in, Dad."
"Let's talk," he said as he entered and sat beside Kara.
"What's up?" Kara asked.
Kara's father glanced back and forth between us before saying, "I believe it would be best for you to avoid returning home for the time being."
"Mr. Black, it was just a dog," I said as I leaned forward in the chair.
"No, I think your father was a target," he announced.
I stared blankly at him and asked, "Target by whom? And what does 'target' mean?"
Mr. Black briefly averted his gaze before turning back towards me with an inexplicable expression. "For death."
I looked between Kara and her father with my brows narrowed. "Death? By what?" I asked, feeling confused."Mia, there are some unexplainable things that go on around here." Mr. Black announced.Tell me about it.Kara always talked about the things on the full moon. However, it's unclear why they would target my father and want him dead. Although he was a complete asshole, death seemed extreme, but maybe in his line of work appropriate."So, explain," I replied."I'm not sure it's a good idea," Kara interrupted. It puzzled me as I stared at Kara for a moment before speaking. "Why are you hiding something from me? You know everything about me." I asked in disbelief. It hurt that she didn't think I could handle whatever they seemed to be hiding."Mia, I'm sure Kara has told you about the creatures of the night." He glanced at Kara, giving her a stern look as if he was telling her 'You should have kept your mouth shut' then looked back at me. "Well, they're not just stories," Mr. Black co
We drove for what seemed like an eternity. My heart was pounding in my chest, and I was certain he could hear it. The man blindfolded me and held me still in the backseat, while another man whom I couldn’t see was driving. They chatted and laughed as if they hadn’t just abducted a seventeen-year-old girl. To make matters worse, my father had given me away as if I were not a person, but merely an object. As the car abruptly stopped, it disrupted my thoughts. “We’re here,” the man said as he grabbed me by the wrists and pulled me out of the vehicle. “Hey! That hurts asshole!” I shouted. The man hit the back of my head with a slap. The force of it sent me reeling forward, my feet slipping on the loose gravel that covered the ground beneath me. I stumbled, my arms flailing wildly as I fought to maintain my balance, but it was no use. I fell forward, my hands scraping against the rough surface of the gravel as I tried desperately to stop myself. “You better watch your tongue girl,
As I walked towards the table, the man from the office kept a close eye on every movement of my hips. Once I reached the table, all the men stared at me, scanning me from head to toe. A bunch of perverts, if you ask me. They were gawking at me like I was their dessert, despite me being only seventeen years old. Well, only for a few more days, but still it was disgusting how they eyed me as if I was the next notch above their bedpost. “Champagne?” I asked, looking at the group. “Damn, I knew you were sexy, but not that sexy. My cock is so hard right now.” He stated. I was startled when the man struck Dash forcefully at the back of his head, causing him to nearly be thrown off his chair. “Don’t be a dickhead!” He then grabbed a glass from my tray. “Dane, stop being so polite. You’re the alpha, for Christ’s sake,” he said while rubbing the back of his head. “Alpha?” I asked curiously. “Shut up and go back to work,” Dash said as he was about to push me away. However, Dane interv
Dane looked down at me on the floor and asked, “Why are you down there?” I attempted to stand up, but Dane extended his hand to assist me. Once upright, I avoided eye contact and gazed down at the ground. I was apprehensive about revealing my face to Dane, as I was already sporting bruises. “We were just talking, Alpha Dane.” Catrina lied. He asked Catrina skeptically, “So girls talk on the floor now?” while tilting his head. The girl who came to help me tried to hold back her laughter. Dane glanced at her questionably. “Got something to add Kendra?” “Catrina is a lying bitch,” Kendra unveiled. “Fuck you!” Catrina snapped back. Dane looked at all of us before settling his gaze on me. “New girl, what happened?” I tilted my head to the side, letting my hair fall over my eye, and replied, “Nothing, sir.” Catrina hissed, “It’s Alpha!” “I don’t understand what you’re talking about. You keep mentioning Luna, Alpha, and me being human. What is all this even supposed to mean?”
As night approached, I realized that if I hadn’t convinced Dane to listen to reason, Catrina would be in danger of losing her life. Additionally, there was a chance that I could also be at risk due to my outspoken nature. As I stood in the kitchen, folding the last load of laundry, the sound of footsteps approaching caused my heart to race. The sudden noise jolted me from my train of thought, and I felt a sense of unease begin to settle in again. Despite my efforts to remain composed, my eyes darted toward the door as I waited for the source of the sound to reveal itself. It was then that I saw Dash standing there, his eyes fixed on me in a way that made me feel exposed. There was something about his presence that made me feel uneasy like he was always watching and waiting for an opportunity to pounce. As I tried to regain my composure, I couldn’t help but wonder what he was doing here. Was he simply passing by, or was there something more sinister at play? It was impossible to kn
As I lay over Catrina in fear, waiting for what seemed like an eternity, my mind raced with thoughts of impending doom. All I could hear was the sound of my own heart pounding in my chest, drowning out any other noise around me. It was only when I dared to peek out of one eye that I saw the machete gleaming in the dim light as it hovered menacingly inches from my face. At that moment, time seemed to stand still. The adrenaline pumping through my veins made every sensation feel amplified, and I could feel the cold sweat trickling down my spine. My thoughts turned to all the things I wished I had done differently, all the moments I had wasted, and all the people I had failed to tell how much they meant to me. But suddenly, I noticed the blade had stopped moving.Kendra rushed over and knelt. “Are you fucking insane?!”Dane took the blade away from my face and looked at me angrily. “I had the ability to end your life."I covered Catrina like a blanket, not giving them a chance to proceed
Dash shifted his gaze back and forth between me and Dane as if he was trying to discern the situation he had just entered.Dane nodded, his gaze lingering on me for a moment before he turned to Dash. “Gather the pack. We’ll meet in the clearing in ten minutes.” As Dash left the room, Dane turned to me. “I’m sorry, Mia. Duty calls.” I nodded, with my heart still racing from the intensity of our moment. “What’s going on?” I had a feeling in the pit of my stomach that I couldn’t shake.“We need to secure the border. Wait here, and we’ll continue this conversation later, once I’m back,” he said as he cradled my chin between his index finger and thumb. “Don’t look so worried.”As soon as his hand lifted from my skin, it felt as if my entire soul went with him.Why was I feeling this way?He gave me a small smile before exiting the room, his broad shoulders disappearing through the doorway. As I stood there alone, I couldn’t help but wonder what could have been if we weren’t interrupted.
I was struck by the sheer magnificence of the animal. Its coat was a shimmering light blonde, its eyes piercing and intelligent. But it was more than just its physical beauty that captivated me - there was an aura of power and grace emanating from the wolf that was almost palpable. As I stood there, watching the wolf move with effortless grace and fluidity, I felt a rush of adrenaline coursing through my veins. There was something about this particular wolf that was truly exceptional - a quality that set it apart from all the others. Perhaps it was the way it carried itself, with a regal bearing that commanded respect and admiration. Or maybe it was the fierce intelligence that burned in its eyes, a testament to the wild spirit that lay within. Whatever the reason, I found myself unable to tear my gaze away. Every movement, every sound, every twitch of its powerful muscles held me spellbound. And as I stood there, lost in admiration for this magnificent creature, I couldn’t help but
The celebration was still in full swing, but I was ready to leave. I wanted nothing but to be alone with Dane, my Alpha, my husband. I leaned closer to Dane, who was engrossed in conversation with a few alphas from nearby packs, and whispered in his ear so that only he could hear me. "Alpha, why don't we get out of here and have some fun, just the two of us," I whispered in a seductive tone. As soon as he heard those words, his body became tense, and he gave me a sideways glance with a smirk before turning his focus back to the men. "I'm sorry, gentlemen, but something has come up and there's an important matter that needs my attention." Dane nodded as he shook their hands, then placed his hand on the small of my back and guided me away. We left the noisy group and made our way into the wilderness, up a hill that gave us a view of the nearby lake. The spot was secluded and breathtaking. The calm waters of the lake were like a mirror, reflecting the stars above and creating a mesm
I woke to the sound of birds chirping outside the window, with the warm sun peeking through the curtains. I stretched my arms above my head and felt the soft sheets against my skin. As I sat up, I realized that I was in Dane's bed and a smile spread across my face. It felt so right being there with him. Portland was a distant memory, and I couldn't care less about being there if Dane wasn't a part of it.It had been a few weeks since the night that Dash had attacked me, and Dane had been by my side every step of the way as I healed from the trauma. He had been my rock, my protector, and my confidant, and I had grown to love him more with each passing day. Today was a big day, the day that Dane would mark me as his mate in a ceremony that would bind us together for life. I couldn't wait to officially become a part of his pack and to spend the rest of my life by his side. All those thoughts that I didn’t deserve Dane because I was a measly human were just my anxiety playing with me. I
As the tension in the air grew, both Dane and Dash’s bodies began to convulse and contort, muscles bulging and bones cracking. Their skin rippled and fur sprouted from every pore, covering them from head to toe in a thick coat of bristly hair. Their noses became snouts and their teeth sharpened into razor blade-like fangs. With a final guttural snarl, they stood before each other, ready for battle. The small shack was barely able to contain Dane and Dash’s massive frames that stood facing each other. Their eyes glowed with intense, ferocious energy as they began circling one another, their muscles rippling with anticipation. Kendra tried to pull me from the tiny building, but I refused. I had to make sure Dane was okay. I wasn’t sure what a small human could do in a battle between two large werewolves, but I was determined to be there to help if Dash decided to fight unfairly. He was a rogue and they couldn’t be trusted. I mean, he never could in the first place. “We should get o
That night, the small, dark room was quiet and still. The only sound came from the faint hum of the air conditioning unit located on the floor above. The room was dimly lit by a sliver of light that peeked through the tiny slits between the blinds. The darkness seemed to engulf everything, making it difficult to see clearly.I was lying on the bed, still shackled and without any undergarments or pants. Dash had not even given me water or food, which made me feel extremely exhausted. He hadn’t returned to finish his assault, but I had a feeling that it wouldn’t be long before he did.I had visible bruises on my face and body from the beating Dash had given me. He used various objects to hit me, such as his belt, a wooden paddle, his hands, and even his boots, stomping them into my abdomen. It was evident that my face was black and blue, and my lips were split open and swollen. The whites of my eyes were bloodshot, causing my once ocean-colored eyes to appear crimson. As soon as the doo
The next thing I knew, I was groggily coming to the world, a blur of hazy shapes and colors. My head throbbed dully, and I struggled to make sense of my surroundings. It took a few moments for my eyes to adjust to the dim light from the window above the bed I was lying on. “What the hell?” I groaned. Everything was in slow motion, but I tried to sit up and couldn’t. My hands and feet were shackled to the bed frame. “No. No. No…” I repeated as I tried yanking my hands free. “Not feeling so safe now, are we?” Dash’s disgusting voice spoke across the room out of the darkness. “Let me go, you bastard!” I screamed at him, yanking the chains holding me against my will. His annoying chuckle echoed against the walls of the small room. “Why would I do that? We haven’t had our fun yet.” “He’s going to kill you,” I hissed. “Who? Dane?” I could see him grin in the shadows. “He can’t if you’re already dead. But before that, Let’s play.” KendraI did not follow Mia’s instructions; instead, I
Four long years had passed since I left Dane, uncertain if he would reappear or respect my need for space. Though I felt a longing to return to him and ask for his forgiveness, I feared it was too late. It was my fault for walking away initially, but I hadn’t even lived my life yet. Kara needed me then, but now, I was the one living alone in Portland, despite thinking that was the life I wanted so badly. He probably followed my advice and fell in love with Kendra. I didn’t blame either of them. After all, who could resist Dane?At the age of twenty-three, I settled in Portland and established a life here. The relocation was difficult for me, particularly because the farther away I was from Dane, the more intense my pains became. Some days, I would remain on the couch, curled up in a ball, weeping due to the agony. I contemplated whether Dane could sense my pain or if it was his own that I was sensing. After Kara graduated, she got married to a guy from college and they bought a home i
As I lay in Dane’s arms, my body still tingling from the intensity of our lovemaking, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of unease. I knew that I couldn’t stay with him forever, that I had to return to my human life. I had to be there for Kara. But the thought of leaving him behind, the possibility of never seeing him again, made my heart ache.Dane seemed to sense my unease, and he gently brushed his fingers through my hair. “What’s wrong, Mia?” he asked softly as he cradled me in his arm.I took a deep breath, trying to compose myself. “I just...” I paused. “I can’t go back with you,” I admitted. “I need to be there for Kara... I can’t just abandon her.”Dane’s expression was pained, but he nodded understandingly. “I know,” he said. “But... What if we could find a way to make it work? What if we could find a way for you to be with me without giving up everything else?”I felt a lump form in my throat as I gazed into his eyes. There was so much love and sincerity in his gaze, so much r
As I ran through the darkness, my heart was pounding with fear. Every few seconds, I stole a glance behind me, afraid that Kade was still pursuing me. But my anxiety got the better of me, and in my haste to escape, I forgot to watch where I was going. Before I knew it, I stumbled over an obstacle in front of me, sending me tumbling to the ground. My body lurched forward uncontrollably. Panic set in as I realized I was about to fall. My heart raced as I frantically grasped at the air, searching for something to hold onto. But it was too late. With a sudden jolt, I hit the ground hard. Pain shot through my body as I lay there, stunned, and disoriented. As I struggled to catch my breath, I couldn’t help but let out a sharp cry of surprise. “Ow!” I exclaimed, my voice echoing across the empty landscape. It was a moment of pure shock and disbelief - one that I won’t soon forget. The world seemed to spin around me as I tried to make sense of what had just happened. But even as I lay there,
Kade had Kara, and I was terrified that he could have killed her.“KARA!” I screamed and attempted to run toward the back, but Kade grabbed me and forcefully pushed me onto the couch. I struggled to break free. “What did you do to my friend?” I demanded.Kade had me pinned. “Nothing she didn’t like.” My hands gripped his cheek, which was already extensively bleeding from an injury, and dug my nails into the laceration. “If you have harmed her, I will personally take your life!” I whispered menacingly. He smirked and removed my hand from his face as if I wasn’t hurting him. He leaned in and said, “She felt great, and the best part was her begging me to stop.”I pushed him, but he remained immovable. “You’re a repulsive spawn of Satan!” I used all my strength to push him away from me and attacked him.As I found myself straddling him on the hard, cold floor, throwing wild punches at his grinning face, my frustration and anger began to boil over. Each swing was a desperate attempt to m
