Valerie:
I walked into the estate I once called home, the estate I was banished from five years ago. The appearance of it hadn’t changed, yet the weight of its walls felt heavier, steeped in memories I tried to suppress.
“You should have fought back from the divorce. You should have fought back to tell him that you did not want it.” My mother's words played in my head for a moment, but I forced myself to take a deep breath as ignored the pain that formed in my chest, the pain that I wanted nothing more than to find disappearing.
The faint sound of footsteps pulled me from my thoughts, and the door opened, revealing Elias, my older brother. His face lit up with a soft smile, one I hadn’t seen in years. The one reason why I was here was because of him. And I knew that he was well aware of that. I knew that he understood that I wouldn't be here had he not begged me to come.
“Welcome home, sorella,” he said, stepping forward and pulling me into a warm embrace.
For a moment I hesitated, wondering whether or not being here was the right thing. Knowing that I had been cast aside, left to fend for myself. But I knew that it was not his fault. I let myself sink into his familiar warmth and warmth that he made sure to always bring to me, even when I was alone.
“It feels good to be back, fratello,” I said softly, my voice betraying the emotions I fought to keep at bay. He looked down on me, understanding my pain. I knew that he understood the anger that I felt, even he reflected on it, but he had no word to say about it. I didn't want him to be part of this war, whatever it was, if I could call it that.
I glanced around the estate, letting my gaze linger on the intricacies of the home I grew up in. Despite everything, being here stirred a sense of nostalgia, even if it was mixed with pain. And for a moment, I smiled.
“Mama, is this where you used to live?” Adrian asked, his small voice breaking through my thoughts. The one voice that I grew to love more than anything else. The one voice that held my ground, that forced me to remember why I was doing this.
I turned to my son, who was staring at the towering ceilings and ornate decorations with wide-eyed wonder. I knew that this was not something that I expected when I told him that we were coming here, he did not know what to expect. Of course he wouldn't. He was a child.
“Yes, baby,” I said with a small smile. “When Mama was your age, this was her home.”
“It’s so big!” he exclaimed, spinning in a small circle to take it all in. I couldn’t help but laugh, brushing my hand through his hair. “If I walk here, I'm going to end up getting lost. How am I going to find you, Mama?”
“It indeed is big, but trust me when I say you are not going to get lost because your mother is always going to be by your side.” I agreed. “And even if you do get lost, if you do lose your weight, there's always a way for you to find the door that I saw you. All you have to do is follow your instinct.”
“Are we staying here forever?” he asked, his bright eyes meeting mine with curiosity and a hint of uncertainty. I didn't want to stay here. I didn't want to find myself dealing with more than I could carry. The two of us had our lives together and I did not want to lose that.
Nor did I want to find myself being put in a situation where I would be seeing those who I did not want to be seeing.
I knelt down to his level, placing my hands gently on his shoulders. “That depends on how things go from here, piccolo lupo. Whatever happens, we’ll decide together, okay? I promise.”
“Yes, Mama,” he said, nodding with a smile.
Elias stepped forward, ruffling Adrian’s hair.
“He’s grown so much since I last saw him,” he said, his voice tinged with pride. He was the one person who had accepted him, who had fought for him and who had helped me through everything that I've been through, even though I was an outcast, and even though I knew that it was against the rules for him to help someone who was now casted as a Rogue.
“He has,” I agreed, standing up. “He’s my world.”
Adrian grinned at Elias, who crouched down to his level. “Do you want to see the rest of the estate? I’ll show you where your Mama used to play when she was little.”
“Yes!” Adrian exclaimed, his excitement lighting up the room.
As Elias led him out, I lingered for a moment, letting the familiar surroundings wash over me. I hadn’t expected to come back, but now that I was here, I knew I would face whatever came next with strength.
“It feels good to be back,” I whispered to myself, taking one last deep breath before following them. “It really does…”
Caspian:“What do you mean, ‘she’s here’?” I asked, my voice laced with a growl as I glared at my beta, Mateo. One thing that I did not want to be dealing with is the fact that she would be here, that I would be possibly seeing her. Even the idea of her presence was one that annoyed me.“She was seen with her brother earlier. He called her to come. You know how their traditions work. And do you know that she has to be by his side when he is to be announced as alpha?” Mateo said, his eyes darting nervously to the floor. “With Alpha Dominic gone, Elias is taking his place. He wanted her by his side. And despite being an exile, she is still her sister. He might want her back.”I clenched my jaw, the mere mention of her name stirring a storm I didn’t want to face. “Keep her away from Valerie during the ceremony. I don’t care if it’s her brother’s night. The last thing we need is a scene between the two of them.”“With all due respect, Caspian,” Mateo began cautiously, “Valerie knows how to
Valerie:“You’ve been in this room for the past hour.” I said, entering the office where I knew Elias was choosing to hide himself from the responsibilities that I knew he would now carry on his shoulders.“If I can trust anyone in this world to find me when I am hiding somewhere, it is going to be you, sorella.” He said, making me smile as I walked deeper inside the office.“Well, you don’t try to make it creative wherever it is that you’re hiding, do you?” I asked, teasing him. “Are you okay?”He stood tall, the perfect image of an alpha, but I saw through everything that he was holding onto. It was Father that died, and he was closer to him than I was. And I knew that this tore him inside, to be standing here, knowing that he was taking his place when he was dead.Elias forced a smile, but it didn’t reach his eyes. He wouldn’t let me see the pain, he never had. “I should be asking you that. You're the one here, and I know for a fact that you don't want to be.”He stepped closer, cu
Caspian:I adjusted my cufflinks, trying to do my best as to pass time to get ready. The idea of going there was not one that I wanted. The ceremony was minutes away and the weight of expectation settled heavily on my shoulders. However, it was not the event that bothered me. It was the fact that Valerie's presence loomed over like a dark cloud. And I could already feel the tension that I would bring. It was the tension that I was doing my best to avoid.“Caspian?” Eva’s voice broke the silence, pulling me from my thoughts. I looked at her over my shoulder and I frowned before turning to face her.She stood by the doorway, her red dress clinging to her like a second skin. My jaw tightened at the sight. She made her choice and it was delivered and calculated. She wasn't wearing the dress for the ceremony. She knew that it was not fit for it.“Can you help me with the zipper?” She asked, turning slightly to expose her back. A small smile formed on her lips, and I knew that she was doing
Valerie:I forced myself to keep my gaze calm as I looked at Caspian's eyes, which bored into mine. I could tell that you were shocked. I could not blame him. He remained in front of Adrian, my son, our son, and the disbelief that was on his face could be seen a mile away. His eyes met mine, a silent question burning through them. The number of questions that I knew he had in his minds were countless. I could see him fighting back the truth, struggling to connect with the child that stood in front of him, even the idea of me having a child was one that he did not put in mind. And I knew that this was something that he was thinking about, the life that he had abandoned, that he left behind.Maybe he did not know of Adrian. That was true. However, had he chosen to listen to me, he would have known. I just did not know how I would have been able to tell him at the time, especially with the way that he was serious about the divorce. Especially with the way that he did not even want to loo
Caspian:“You knew of the boy? Of my son?” I asked, ignoring the sense that I felt in my chest as I allowed myself to digest the moment that we were in.“Of course, I did. He’s my nephew.” Elias responded casually. “I doubt that you would expect her to hide him from me too.”His words hit me harder than I cared to admit. My ex-wife, the woman I thought I’d left behind, had hidden my child from me. My fists clenched at my sides as the realization settled in. How could she fucking dare do so?“You let her go.” Elias continued as if it was the most normal thing to say. I could tell that he was being bitter, that he hated speaking the way that he was. “You brought in another woman to take her place. What did you expect? For me to show up on your doorstep and tell you that the wife you forced to leave was carrying your child? That is my sister. I'm not going to put her in such a situation.”“How do you even know he’s yours?” Eva’s voice cut through the tension, her words biting and laced w
Valerie:“Are you sure this is a good idea, leaving after everything that’s happened? Caspian just found out about Adrian. He might want to come and ask questions. He might want to come to talk to you.” Elias asked, trying to talk me out of leaving. But I wasn't going to fall for it after what happened. I was not going to stay.“All the more reason to leave, Elias,” I said, looking at him. “And let’s not forget Mom. She doesn’t want me here, and frankly, I’m done with her constant arguments. I know that I'm not welcome here and I would rather I leave on my own terms before being kicked out. The last thing that I want is for Adrian to see us arguing this much. And I don't want to speak to him, Caspian and I have been long done. He made his choice and I am choosing to stand back from him. I don't want him in my life. I don't need that fuss in my life anymore.”“Valerie, this is your brother’s pack, your home. You’re not going to be kicked out of here,” Elias said softly. “As we're not t
Caspian:“Where are you going, Caspian?” Eva said, entering the room. Even her tone was getting annoying to me, and right now I wanted nothing more than for her to stay quiet and for her to just step away from it and leave.I didn't respond as I watched the maid for my things inside my bag. I did not want Eva to be the one to take care of my things. A maid, at least, would know what to do.The woman looked at me for a moment, wondering whether or not to proceed as she saw that the pack Luna was annoyed. I nodded at her to proceed. I did not want to stay here, nor did I want to respond to Eva in the first place.“Caspian, I’m talking to you. Where the hell are you going?” Eva repeated, noticing that I had ignored her. I looked at her for a moment, debating, wondering whether or not it was going to be worth it to respond.“I heard you the first time,” I said coldly as I looked sideways at her. “And if I chose not to answer, it means I don’t want to. Don’t push me, Eva.”“I’m your wife,”
Valerie:“It seems fate has plans for us tonight, doesn’t it?” Caspian's voice felt like it cut through me like a knife. It was low and deliberate, and I could tell that he was waiting for me to say anything otherwise. His hand rested firmly on my brother's shoulder, but his gaze was pinned on me.It was as if he was trying to read me, trying to study my expression, trying to understand what I was hiding. Little did he know I had a lot in mind, but little did he know I was not going to let him in my mind.My heart raced as his words hung in the air. The man who had been my world once before he tore everything down stood in front of me after so many years. I thought that I would have forgotten him. I thought that my feelings for him had gone, had left. It seemed to me that I was wrong. It seemed to me that things were different now. We were older, more mature, but I still had a weakness towards him. However, his presence itself was impossibly suffocating. And despite the pain, it was s
Eva:The moment we left the hotel, I barely managed to hold my composure. My fingers clenched into fists as I sat stiffly in the passenger seat, my jaw tight with irritation. Caspian had dismissed me. Dismissed me like I was nothing more than an annoyance in his way, all because of her.And if I was angry before, no, now, I was more than just a little furious. I wanted nothing more than to break everything that was in front of me. I wanted nothing more than to take my anger out.Valerie Belmont. The one woman who had always been on his mind despite everything. His comparison. The way he would look at me. The way that I knew he looked at her.‘Why don’t you be like her?’ He had once asked. He apologized for it. But I was no fool, I knew that I was never going to amount to whatever criteria she drew for him. The impossible criteria for me, or any other woman, to follow without playing the role of a perfectionist.I should have calculated this better. I should have known that she would m
Caspian:The tension in the air thickened the moment Eva walked into the hotel lounge.I did not expect her to be coming here, nor did I expect the fact that she would be willing to leave the house to come to the hotel, especially since she knew that I did not want her to be here. Her heels clicked against the marble floor as she strode toward me, her expression dark with irritation. I could already tell that she was not in the mood for pleasantries, not that she ever truly was, but today, there was something sharper in her gaze. And I knew that she was upset with the fact that I was here. I knew that the idea of Valerie and I being in the same place was not one that settled her. However, no matter what was going to happen, she did not have the right to defy me the way that she did.She was well aware about the fact that I did not want her to be here. She was aware about the fact that I wanted her to be at home with Daniel. However, she chose to call and now she was going to have to d
Valerie:I stepped into the hotel lobby, my breath still slightly uneven from my escape, but my expression? Calm. Collected. Controlled.I knew that I could have left and I knew that I could have taken my son away. However, I also knew this if I chose to play this game then I could just end up endangering him. And as his mother, as the woman who has fought to protect him throughout all this time, I did not aim to do that, Not after all these years. The moment I stepped inside, I spotted Elias sitting in one of the lounge chairs, his hand wrapped around a glass of what I could only assume was whiskey. He looked up, his gaze locking onto mine the instant I entered. He did not expect me to leave as easily as I did, however, what he did not know was the fact that I was not a game in his own plan, whatever that was. He was going to need to understand that I was stronger than he was going to acknowledge. Maybe he did, however he did not want to admit that much. For a brief moment, I saw som
Caspian:I barely made it to my office before I heard the door slam open behind me. I figured that leaving the hotel for the day would be the best option. I figured that heading to the office to finish the work that I needed to take care of was going to be a little better for me.However, it seemed to me that fate had another plan, especially considering the fact that I knew that it left behind a raging woman, a wolf, a mother who I knew would come, not only to fight me, but also to give me a hard time. Her sent her my nostrils before she entered my office. I put the pen down, waiting for her to storm in. And just like that, Valerie stormed inside, her eyes blazing with fury, her chest rising and falling as she fought to control her breathing. If she was aiming for an intimidating entrance, she succeeded. The moment I laid eyes on her, I could tell, she was beyond angry. She wasn’t just annoyed. She was livid. If anyone knew her and if anyone understood everything that she had when it
Valerie:The room was quiet, the kind of stillness that felt suffocating rather than peace. This was something that I would have normally admired. I would have normally loved my piece, but right now I just found myself feeling like I was completely alone, feeling like I was in complete conflict.Adrian's laughter from earlier still echoed in my ear, but now it just felt like a distant memory, like a fleeting moment that I could not hold on to. The way that he spoke about Caspian after he left and the way he felt like he had admired the man was one that I could not just ignore. He was his father, and yet he did not know the damage that that man, his own father, could inflict on him, could inflict on everyone who was around him. I was the one person who saw that, and it killed me because I knew that no matter how hard I tried, no one was going to listen, especially not now.I sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the door, waiting. I knew Elias was coming. The tension between us earlie
Elias:I found myself staring into space as the morning sunlight poured through the hotel’s grand windows. It illuminated the lounge of the golden warmth, one that should have been soothing, but all it did was highlight the way that I carried.Today not only went against everything that I wanted, but it was not going the way that I needed it to go at all. And no matter how hard I tried to think about it, no matter how hard I tried to find the solution to what I was dealing with, I couldn't.I sat in one of the oversized chairs, staring blankly on my coffee cup. It had gone cold long ago, but I couldn’t bring myself to drink it or ask for a fresh one. All I did was sulk as I stared at it, getting lost in my thoughts, not knowing how I was going to deal with things, not knowing how I was supposed to be enduring all of this by myself. From one side, I knew that I should be doing the right thing, but from the other I knew that doing the right thing was going to end up harming my sister.
Caspian:The warm glow gave the dining area a serene atmosphere over the bustling hotel.I entered the room, my steps calm as my gaze scanned the table. It did not take me long to find him, Adrian, who was sitting with Elias near the window. For a moment I found myself staring at him. He was laughing at his small hands, gestured animatedly as he spoke to his uncle. The site made my trust tighten. It was a mixture of emotions that swirled in me.Pride, longing, and regret, they were emotions that I felt towards the boy. For a moment, I wondered whether or not she was right, whether or not Valerie knew what she was talking about when it came to the child. However, this was still far beyond her, far beyond whatever it is that she wanted to say.Right now, I did not care about what she felt about this. I knew that my son needed me around him. I knew that I had to be in his life. It was not something that he could just choose. Why? Because he was my son. She chose to prevent him from growi
Valerie:My son's laughter echoed through the hotel's courtyard as he kicked the ball back and forth with the babysitter. His carefree joy was a sharp contrast to the storm that was boiling inside of me. I stood near the edge of the patio. My arms were crossed over my chest as I stared at him, watching with a tight chest and a clenched jaw, thinking about how I was going to end up dealing with the situation that I was in.Caspian’s words from earlier replayed in my mind, each one laced with entitlement and control. The man just wanted to get what he wanted. He did not care about anything else except whatever duty he had to carry. He spoke about Adrian as if he were some artifact to claim, some duty to fulfill, instead of the sweet, sensitive boy who giggled when his favorite cartoons played and cried when he scraped his knee. He did not know him. He did not care about him as a son. He did not care about him as a person either. But this was not something that I was going to allow him t
Caspian:I said in one of the arm treads in the hotel lobby, watching as the morning sunlight streamed through the large windows of the hotel's lounge. My fingers drummed against the armrest as I watched Elias approach me with a measured pace. I knew that he was not happy. I could tell that something happened. His expression was tight, the lines around his eyes deeper than they’d been the night before. He dropped into the chair opposite mine, rubbing a hand over his face before fixing me with a hard stare. And though he did not say a word, I could tell what he was going to talk about. It was going to be his sister. And the fact that she did not approve of what I said. Then again, knowing Valerie, I did not expect her to be as easily convinced about anything that I told her right now. I expected her to give me a hard time. However, what I did not expect was for her to give a harder time than necessary. She was normally a lightweight. She normally chose to listen to what I said. She nor
