Caspian:

I adjusted my cufflinks, trying to do my best as to pass time to get ready. The idea of going there was not one that I wanted. The ceremony was minutes away and the weight of expectation settled heavily on my shoulders. However, it was not the event that bothered me. It was the fact that Valerie's presence loomed over like a dark cloud. And I could already feel the tension that I would bring. It was the tension that I was doing my best to avoid.

“Caspian?” Eva’s voice broke the silence, pulling me from my thoughts. I looked at her over my shoulder and I frowned before turning to face her.

She stood by the doorway, her red dress clinging to her like a second skin. My jaw tightened at the sight. She made her choice and it was delivered and calculated. She wasn't wearing the dress for the ceremony. She knew that it was not fit for it.

“Can you help me with the zipper?” She asked, turning slightly to expose her back. A small smile formed on her lips, and I knew that she was doing her best to have an effect on me, an effect that she hadn't had for a very long time, something that she had noticed.

“Change it, Eva.” I sat looking away from her, my eyes narrowed, and it took everything in me not to roll my eyes at her. I did not want to hurt her feelings, especially not now, especially when I knew that I was not in the mindset to actually speak to her.

“What’s wrong with it? I already fixed my hair and makeup. You can’t expect me to change everything now.” She had just shaking her head in question, trying to pretend that she did not understand why I wanted her to change the dress in the first place.

“You know exactly what’s wrong with it. That dress belongs in a nightclub, not at an Alpha’s ceremony. You are no concubine. You are my Luna. You represent me. And you need to start acting like it.” I said, snapping at her.

“Caspian, this is ridiculous. I don't need you to remind me that I'm your wife and your Luna. Whatever I wear, it concerns me. It is not their part to actually touch me based on what I wear. You are over exaggerating.”

“It matters because you represent this pack.” I snapped, looking her up and down, eyeing her carefully. With each moment that passed, her heart raced and I could tell that this was not a reaction that she liked. “You’re supposed to reflect strength, respect, and dignity, not... whatever this is.”

She moved closer, her hands reaching for my collar. She wanted to get her way. That was not something that I was going to do. That was not something I was going to allow her to do. I was already letting her go with everything that she was doing. This was not going to be one of them.

“You’re not upset about the dress,” she said quietly, her tone laced with accusation. “This is about her, isn’t it? You're angry because she's going to be there.”

“Stop it.” I caught her wrists, lowering her hands from my chest. “Don’t start, Eva. This is not the time for us to have the conversation.”

Her eyes flickered with defiance, but she didn’t press further. Instead, she turned her back to me, tugging at her zipper. She would be ripping her dress up but she didn't care right now she was proving a point. One of the maids was going to end up helping her considering that I chose not to do so.

“I’m not changing,” she said flatly.

“Eva…”

“No. I won’t let her steal my light tonight. I’m your Luna, and I’ll wear what I please.” Stopping me, her voice louder than she wanted it to be, and I knew that she rarely ever raised her tone, but when she did, she was reflecting that she was angry.

Her words stung, but I forced myself to stay calm. There was no time for an argument. We were already late enough as it was. I was going to deal with her later.

“Do whatever you want,” I said coldly. “But don’t forget, you’ll be standing beside me, representing more than just yourself. And you’d better keep an eye on Adrian. I don’t want any trouble tonight.”

“He’s a good kid, Caspian. If there’s trouble, it won’t be his fault,” she shot back, her tone defensive.

I didn’t respond. Instead, I walked past her, the conversation dead in the air. Her footsteps followed mine, hurried but hesitant.

“I’ll be waiting downstairs,” she said stiffly as she left, her heels clicking against the floor.

*************************************************

I stood in silence, watching Eva’s composure crumbled. The other women wore elegant gowns, their presence refined and fitting for the occasion. Beside them, Eva’s daring red dress stuck out like a thorn. I could see the regret written across her face, but she held her head high, unwilling to acknowledge it.

“Caspian, how are you?” Elias said, his voice pulled me from my thoughts.

I turned to him, extending a handshake. “I’m well, Elias. How are you holding up? My condolences for your loss.”

“Thank you,” he replied, his smile tight.

Our conversation was brief, but the air between us was heavy with unspoken tension. Valerie’s presence lingered in the back of my mind, but I forced myself to stay composed.

Eva remained quiet at my side, her gaze fixed on the floor as Elias studied her briefly before turning his attention back to me.

The moment was broken when her scent filled the air, stirring my wolf to alertness. Valerie’s presence hit me like a shockwave, her steps purposeful and her gaze cutting.

“Alpha Caspian. Luna Eva. Thank you for coming to my brother’s ceremony,” Valerie said, her tone perfectly cordial.

Eva hesitated but eventually took Valerie’s hand, her smile forced. “Of course. It’s an honor.”

Valerie stepped back, but before the tension could ease, a small voice spoke up behind her.

“Mom, who are they?”

Everything inside me froze. The boy stepped into view, his small frame shyly clinging to Valerie’s side. My heart thundered in my chest as my wolf grew alert, a growl threatening to escape.

Valerie ran her fingers through his hair, her movements calm despite the rapid beat of her heart. Her gaze met mine, her eyes swimming with unspoken emotions.

“I’d like to introduce my son,” she said, her voice steady but cracking ever so slightly. She took a deep breath before continuing. “Adrian.”

Valerie:I forced myself to keep my gaze calm as I looked at Caspian's eyes, which bored into mine. I could tell that you were shocked. I could not blame him. He remained in front of Adrian, my son, our son, and the disbelief that was on his face could be seen a mile away. His eyes met mine, a silent question burning through them. The number of questions that I knew he had in his minds were countless. I could see him fighting back the truth, struggling to connect with the child that stood in front of him, even the idea of me having a child was one that he did not put in mind. And I knew that this was something that he was thinking about, the life that he had abandoned, that he left behind.Maybe he did not know of Adrian. That was true. However, had he chosen to listen to me, he would have known. I just did not know how I would have been able to tell him at the time, especially with the way that he was serious about the divorce. Especially with the way that he did not even want to loo

Caspian:“You knew of the boy? Of my son?” I asked, ignoring the sense that I felt in my chest as I allowed myself to digest the moment that we were in.“Of course, I did. He’s my nephew.” Elias responded casually. “I doubt that you would expect her to hide him from me too.”His words hit me harder than I cared to admit. My ex-wife, the woman I thought I’d left behind, had hidden my child from me. My fists clenched at my sides as the realization settled in. How could she fucking dare do so?“You let her go.” Elias continued as if it was the most normal thing to say. I could tell that he was being bitter, that he hated speaking the way that he was. “You brought in another woman to take her place. What did you expect? For me to show up on your doorstep and tell you that the wife you forced to leave was carrying your child? That is my sister. I'm not going to put her in such a situation.”“How do you even know he’s yours?” Eva’s voice cut through the tension, her words biting and laced w

He might want to come to talk to you.” Elias asked, trying to talk me out of leaving. But I wasn't going to fall for it after what happened. I was not going to stay.“All the more reason to leave, Elias,” I said, looking at him. “And let’s not forget Mom. She doesn’t want me here, and frankly, I’m done with her constant arguments. I know that I'm not welcome here and I would rather I leave on my own terms before being kicked out. The last thing that I want is for Adrian to see us arguing this much. And I don't want to speak to him, Caspian and I have been long done. He made his choice and I am choosing to stand back from him. I don't want him in my life. I don't need that fuss in my life anymore.”“Valerie, this is your brother’s pack, your home. You’re not going to be kicked out of here,” Elias said softly. “As we're not t

Caspian:“Where are you going, Caspian?” Eva said, entering the room. Even her tone was getting annoying to me, and right now I wanted nothing more than for her to stay quiet and for her to just step away from it and leave.I didn't respond as I watched the maid for my things inside my bag. I did not want Eva to be the one to take care of my things. A maid, at least, would know what to do.The woman looked at me for a moment, wondering whether or not to proceed as she saw that the pack Luna was annoyed. I nodded at her to proceed. I did not want to stay here, nor did I want to respond to Eva in the first place.“Caspian, I’m talking to you. Where the hell are you going?” Eva repeated, noticing that I had ignored her. I looked at her for a moment, debating, wondering whether or not it was going to be worth it to respond.“I heard you the first time,” I said coldly as I looked sideways at her. “And if I chose not to answer, it means I don’t want to. Don’t push me, Eva.”“I’m your wife,”

Valerie:“It seems fate has plans for us tonight, doesn’t it?” Caspian's voice felt like it cut through me like a knife. It was low and deliberate, and I could tell that he was waiting for me to say anything otherwise. His hand rested firmly on my brother's shoulder, but his gaze was pinned on me.It was as if he was trying to read me, trying to study my expression, trying to understand what I was hiding. Little did he know I had a lot in mind, but little did he know I was not going to let him in my mind.My heart raced as his words hung in the air. The man who had been my world once before he tore everything down stood in front of me after so many years. I thought that I would have forgotten him. I thought that my feelings for him had gone, had left. It seemed to me that I was wrong. It seemed to me that things were different now. We were older, more mature, but I still had a weakness towards him. However, his presence itself was impossibly suffocating. And despite the pain, it was s

Valerie:The tension in the café was suffocating, the air thick with unspoken accusations and barely contained anger. Knowing him, I knew that he was just threatening to explode. I doubted that she was going to go out until she was sure that I was away from the hotel in the first place, but I was also going to make sure that she did not leave at all. Caspian:I barely made it to my office before I heard the door slam open behind me. I figured that leaving the hotel for the day would be the best option. I figured that heading to the office to finish the work that I needed to take care of was going to be a little better for me.However, it seemed to me that fate had another plan, especially considering the fact that I knew that it left behind a raging woman, a wolf, a mother who I knew would come, not only to fight me, but also to give me a hard time. Her sent her my nostrils before she entered my office. I put the pen down, waiting for her to storm in. And just like that, Valerie stormed inside, her eyes blazing with fury, her chest rising and falling as she fought to control her breathing. Valerie:The room was quiet, the kind of stillness that felt suffocating rather than peace. This was something that I would have normally admired. I would have normally loved my piece, but right now I just found myself feeling like I was completely alone, feeling like I was in complete conflict.Adrian's laughter from earlier still echoed in my ear, but now it just felt like a distant memory, like a fleeting moment that I could not hold on to. The way that he spoke about Caspian after he left and the way he felt like he had admired the man was one that I could not just ignore. He was his father, and yet he did not know the damage that that man, his own father, could inflict on him, could inflict on everyone who was around him. I was the one person who saw that, and it killed me because I knew that no matter how hard I tried, no one was going to listen, especially not now.I sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the door, waiting. I knew Elias was coming. The tension between us earlie

Elias:I found myself staring into space as the morning sunlight poured through the hotel’s grand windows. It illuminated the lounge of the golden warmth, one that should have been soothing, but all it did was highlight the way that I carried.Today not only went against everything that I wanted, but it was not going the way that I needed it to go at all. And no matter how hard I tried to think about it, no matter how hard I tried to find the solution to what I was dealing with, I couldn't.I sat in one of the oversized chairs, staring blankly on my coffee cup. It had gone cold long ago, but I couldn’t bring myself to drink it or ask for a fresh one. All I did was sulk as I stared at it, getting lost in my thoughts, not knowing how I was going to deal with things, not knowing how I was supposed to be enduring all of this by myself. From one side, I knew that I should be doing the right thing, but from the other I knew that doing the right thing was going to end up harming my sister.

It was a mixture of emotions that swirled in me.Pride, longing, and regret, they were emotions that I felt towards the boy. For a moment, I wondered whether or not she was right, whether or not Valerie knew what she was talking about when it came to the child. However, this was still far beyond her, far beyond whatever it is that she wanted to say.Right now, I did not care about what she felt about this. I knew that my son needed me around him. Valerie:My son's laughter echoed through the hotel's courtyard as he kicked the ball back and forth with the babysitter. His carefree joy was a sharp contrast to the storm that was boiling inside of me. I stood near the edge of the patio. My arms were crossed over my chest as I stared at him, watching with a tight chest and a clenched jaw, thinking about how I was going to end up dealing with the situation that I was in.Caspian’s words from earlier replayed in my mind, each one laced with entitlement and control. The man just wanted to get what he wanted. He did not care about anything else except whatever duty he had to carry. He spoke about Adrian as if he were some artifact to claim, some duty to fulfill, instead of the sweet, sensitive boy who giggled when his favorite cartoons played and cried when he scraped his knee. He did not know him. He did not care about him as a son. He did not care about him as a person either. But this was not something that I was going to allow him t
