Asher POV
The look on her face went from curiosity to utter devastation in two seconds flat. Rejection wasn’t easy on a wolf. They felt it down in the very depths of their soul. I felt bad that I had to reject her, but I couldn’t risk any of my enemies, especially Ian, using my mate against me to get what they wanted. “Are you crazy?! We can’t reject our Mate! I refuse to do it, Asher. I will not break her wolf like that. I can already feel her wolf and she’s strong.” Thor was frantic. The panic in his voice was something I had never heard from my generally over-confident wolf. A Mate was a liability. A way for others to get leverage over you and manipulate you to their will. I just couldn’t allow that to happen. My pack was counting on me to keep them safe and in order to do that I needed no distractions. It was obvious in just the first two minutes of meeting my mate that all of my beliefs were true. All my brother did was shake her hand and I couldn’t repress the growl that escaped my lips. “Asher, what are you doing?” Alex hissed at me. He looked to Alpha Lance and continued speaking, “Please excuse my brother. I think he’s just in shock. If you don’t mind, we’re just going to step out of the room for just a moment and we will be right back.” Without so much as a response from Alpha Lance, Alex ushered me out of the room as quickly as he could. “Let me repeat myself from earlier. What. Are. You. Doing?!” Alex gave me an incredulous look and I’m fairly certain he was about ready to throttle me. “I’m doing what I must for Blood Moon Pack, Alex. You wouldn’t understand. You’ve never had to put the needs of others above yourself. Besides, I have never wanted a Mate. They’re nothing but a nuisance and a liability.” Then my brother did something he hadn’t done since we were young. He sucker punched me right in the face. “I’ve never put others’ needs above my own? What do you think it is I do with you every fucking day, Asher?! You’re the Alpha while I’m the lowly Beta. Your needs ALWAYS come before my own as do the needs of the pack. Right now I’m going to tell you that if you reject that she-wolf you will regret it for the rest of your life.” Alex was red in the face with anger, which could only match my own anger at being sucker punched. I paced back and forth trying to calm myself before I lost my temper completely and pummeled Alex for his cheap shot. Alex never spoke to me this way. Nor did he ever act this way towards me. “For once I agree with Alex.” Thor said nodding his head. Great. Two on one. Everybody was teaming up against me. Not that it mattered. She was my mate and it was my right to reject her if I wished to do so. However, I could tell that my bull headed little brother wasn’t going to relent. “Alex, there is a lot for me to consider with what we have coming. We have a war on our hands whether we like it or not.” I said. “I do understand that, but a mate is supposed to help make you stronger. Imagine what having a Luna would do for Blood Moon.” Alex pointed out. I thought about what he said. He wasn’t wrong that it was said that a mate did indeed make you stronger. However, that physical strength didn’t ensure that the mate couldn’t be used to manipulate you and I wasn’t willing to chance the lives of my pack members. Or I didn’t want to believe I was willing to. One look at her and everything else seemed to disappear. The war, the other wolves in the meeting room. All of it. As I had neared the room I could smell her vanilla and caramel scent. Not only did she smell absolutely delectable but one look at her and I knew I would eat her alive. I’d never seen such a gorgeous she-wolf in my life. She was tall in comparison to most other she-wolves and she had the most intriguing eyes I had ever seen. One blue and one green, but they were so close in color I would have missed the difference if I hadn’t been staring so intently into them. I shook my head. This was why I couldn’t have a mate. I couldn’t afford to lose myself in one other person when I literally had thousands of other wolves who depended on me for their safety and livelihood. “Let’s head back in there and get down to business.” I said to my brother. “I swear I won’t reject her right now, but I can’t promise it won’t happen before we leave.” I tried to placate my brother and Thor. Alex seemed less than enthused with my response, but something in what I said must have been what he was hoping for, as he nodded his head and we headed back into the meeting room.Signe POV I watched him seemingly waltz out of my life through the same exact door he had walked into it. I mean, his brother said they’d be right right back, but here I was standing there at a loss for words. Did I just discover and lose my mate in a matter of two minutes? What did I do wrong? Did he have a lover back home? Was he already mated to another she wolf? I hadn’t heard that he had a chosen mate back at Blood Moon, but that didn’t mean it wasn’t possible. The thought made my heart ache. So many questions with absolutely zero answers. I mean, it can’t just be me. He doesn’t know me. Yet, the only words he has spoken to me were that he didn’t want a mate. “He mentioned that he didn’t want a mate. Maybe he thought he was never going to get one and had moved on from the idea?” Aerona said. “Or he has a chosen mate back at his pack and he’s worried that a fated mate will ruin everything.” I contemplated. “Wait, when in the hell did you become so at peace with this
Signe POV I couldn't believe that he walked by me without even looking at me. It's not as though I hadn't seen him already staring at me just a few moments ago. I turned my body around as he rushed by me following his quick and powerful strides with my eyes all the way to the table. He stopped in front of Alpha Lance, thrust his hand out and just stood there. Waiting. I looked over at Alpha Lance to see if he would accept Alpha Asher's extended hand. After what seemed like five minutes, but I know was more like five seconds, Alpha Lance finally extended his own hand grapsing Alpha Asher’s hand firmly. One quick shake and they were off. "Alright Alpha Asher. Let me introduce you to those who help in advising me and protecting this pack. Here,” he gestured to his right, “is my Beta, Owen." Beta Owen stepped forward and shook hands with Asher. "Next to him is his daughter and our future Beta, Lena." Lena just nodded her head at the introduction. "Next we have my son and fu
I was curious what this alliance would mean as well. “I’m not asking for all or even most of your warriors by any means. I would never want you to leave your own pack in a precarious position against Ian if he were to find out about our alliance and decide to attack you because of it.” Alpha Asher responded. Alpha Lance just nodded, encouraging Alpha Asher to continue. “Our pack houses are three hours apart by car and an hour to an hour and a half by wolf. I’m asking for added patrols along our shared borders to ensure nobody gets through onto Blood Moon or Crescent Moon pack lands undetected. I would do the same, also helping to ensure nobody was able to sneak onto either of our lands. I’d also like to request half a dozen of your best warriors to be added to my border patrol along the borders I share with Midnight Pack. I was also hoping for another hundred or two to be at the ready if needed.” Alpha Asher finished his explanation and continued to look at Alpha Lance expect
"Wait! What?!" Aerona and I exclaimed out loud. Only, I was the only one that everybody could hear. I snapped my head to look at Alpha Lance. "I'm sorry Alpha Lance, but I don't feel as though the supposed mate bond between Signe and myself is really much of your concern." Alpha Asher growled out.“Supposed mate bond?” Aerona said as if she was questioning Asher’s sanity. Alpha Lance didn't even so much as flinch at Alpha Asher's response. "You're right. It's not. However, it is a concern to Signe and as she is one of my pack members, I do have a right as her Alpha to help her out where I feel necessary. As of this moment, I feel that one of those times is now." Alpha Lance responded in a 'I won't take no for an answer' tone. "I will not be forced to talk with somebody just because you say to, Lance." He spat out. "Asher, you're being unreasonable. Just talk with the damn girl. If the Moon Goddess-" Alex started to say. "Fuck the Moon Goddess. She doesn't run my life. I
Signe POV I was shaking a little, but trying not to show it. As much as I wanted to have this talk, I also didn't want to have this talk at the same time. "All right, do we want to step outside?" I asked Asher. "Signe, the rest of us will vacate the room and leave you two to talk." Alpha Lance said. He then turned to Alex. "Would you care to join us downstairs for lunch? Talk of war has made me completely famished." Alex nodded to Alpha Lance, squeezed Asher on the shoulder and followed behind the rest of my pack members that were in this room on their way out. Lena looked back at me as she was about to exit through the door. With a sad look on her face she mouthed good luck to me and disappeared around the corner. I took a deep breath and turned to Asher. He wasn't even looking at me. Rather, he was looking at his hands as if he had unexpectedly found something interesting there that he had never seen before. Suddenly, he looked up and caught my eyes and I couldn't lo
Signe POVI threw him off guard with that one. It was only for a second that I could see it on his face, but it was there. He put his hand up to his face and ran it down the front, giving an exasperated sigh while doing so. I waited to hear his response to my spiel. The longer I stood there, the longer the silence stretched out between us. I shifted my weight back and forth. Was he waiting for me to speak up? Or was he seeing how long I could hold out if he kept silent?News flash Mr. Big Bad Wolf. I can stand here all day and you will be the first one to break the silence. We continued to stand there in silence for another minute or two. “This is ridiculous.” Aerona whined. “Just tell him your proposal. I can feel his wolf and his wolf doesn’t want to reject us.”“Really Aerona? Are you sure?”I didn’t want to get my hopes up too much, but if Aerona and Asher’s wolf were communicating, I knew that was a good sign. So much for not breaking the silence first. Come to think of it,
Asher POVMom had sounded frantic on the phone, which was unusual for her. As the former Luna of Blood Moon, she's known for her sturdy backbone and her ferocity to protect her pack. To hear her so worked up had me on edge.I walked quickly out into the hall from the meeting room. I remembered Lance offering for Alex to join them for lunch downstairs. I needed to find my brother quickly so that we could make our way back to Blood Moon to assess the situation. My warriors on the eastern border were my strongest warriors being as that was my border that I shared with Midnight Pack. For one of them to have been murdered... I didn't want to think about it yet. I needed to locate Alex so that he and I could shift and make our way back to Blood Moon as quickly as possible. "Alpha Asher!" I heard her cry out behind me as I began my descent down the stairs. I turned to look up at her.Signe stopped in her tracks and stared at me with those unique blue and green eyes. I could see the hesitati
Signe POVAsher left the room without another word leaving his brother behind. Alex stood up and looked at me. "Are you coming?" He asked with a huge grin on his face.I couldn't help but smile back at him this time. A real smile. I could tell Alex was the trouble maker in the family. I had no doubts about that. I quickly glanced to Alpha Lance who was giving me a little smile himself. I could tell he wanted to speak with me about my talk with Asher earlier. I turned back to Alex. "I need to speak with my Alpha first." I said smiling at him again. I couldn't seem to help it. Alex's smile was extremely infectious. "I understand. Well, you know how to get in touch." Alex gave me a quick little wink and the rest a wave, then dashed out of the dining room after his brother. I turned to look at Lena so I could try and gauge her thoughts on this whole thing and I caught her staring longingly after Alex. I giggled internally at my best friend. It seems as though somebody might have a ne
