Alpha Asher POV
The car ride was longer than I anticipated. Or maybe it’s just the fact that my wolf Thor hates car rides and gets extra annoying and claustrophobic when we have to ride in one for more than about thirty minutes. “No, I think you were right the first time. The ride is definitely longer than either of us expected it to be.” Thor replied not too convincingly. “Yeah, why don’t you just go back to sleep so that I can actually concentrate on the task at hand. I need to focus so that I can convince Alpha Lance to form this alliance with us so that we might stand a chance against Alpha Ian and the Midnight Pack. Alpha Ian has conquered too many packs in the last five years and has gained too much power in doing so. We’re the next pack in his sights and—“ “Brother, we’re here. How do you want to approach this?” My brother asked, pulling me out of my internal conversation with Thor. I glanced up at Alex. “Is there an option other than approaching this head on? What would you like me to say brother, other than the truth? Ian is coming after us and once he’s killed me, you and every other high-ranking wolf in our pack he will come for them next.”We don’t have time to mess around with this bullshit. Facts. That’s all we have and that’s all Alpha Lance will get from me. “I meant are we going to dive right in or do we ease them into it first?” He was irritated with me. That’s fine. He can be irritated all he pleases, but he sure as shit wasn’t going to disrespect me in front of the Crescent Moon Pack, brother or not. “Alpha Lance is a smart Alpha and has been around a long time. I think he will appreciate us just coming right out with it.” I said. Or, at least, I hope that’s what he will appreciate, because like it or not. Here we come. Alex and I got out of the car and headed towards the large, and somewhat extravagant, pack house of the Crescent Moon Pack. It certainly gave my own pack house a run for its money in comparison to the other pack houses I’ve visited recently, but it still paled in comparison. Next to Midnight pack, Blood Moon is the biggest and strongest pack on the continent. However, with all of the packs he’s absorbed, Ian has us in numbers alone and that doesn’t bode well in battle. No matter how much heart my warriors will put into protecting their loved ones and their home. I glanced around and saw the same hustle and bustle going on here as goes on at Blood Moon. Everybody is going about their business without a care in the world. They’re completely oblivious to the fact that there’s a homicidal Alpha on the loose attacking packs, killing their high-ranking wolves and then forcing its pack members to serve him in his army or murdering them in cold blood when they won’t submit. “They don’t need to prepare for a war on their own doorstep if we can take Ian out of the equation permanently.” Thor chimed in. He had a point there. That’s why I was hopeful that Alpha Lance would see reason and the advantages to this alliance to protect both of our packs from being murdered in cold blood all for the greed of one Alpha. “Well,” I give Alex a look that we’ve been giving each other since we were boys that meant we were knowingly heading into trouble, “here goes nothing.” With that, we let ourselves in and walked straight to the meeting room to have our chat with Alpha Lance and his council.Signe POV We stood around constantly checking the time. Occasionally, I’d peak out of the window in the meeting room to see if a car I didn’t recognize had pulled up. Alpha Lance was on edge. He was trying to hide it, but with all of my training I was able to pick up on a lot that most other wolves without my training would have missed. “How much longer until you think they arrive?” Xander asked for what I felt was the millionth time. Remind me to not go on a long trip with him for fear of hearing the phrase, “are we there yet?” Come out of his mouth just as many times. Although, I can’t say that I blame Xander or anyone for that matter about being nervous for his visit. Alpha Asher isn’t well known for his patience or his kindness. I’ve heard it’s react first and ask questions later in his case. He’s ruthless towards his enemies, which, ok, that one I definitely can get behind. I wanted to know how many of these rumors I had heard were just that. Rumor. Or if there w
Signe POV There he was. My mate. What the hell? How did this happen? I broke my gaze from his and looked to Alpha Lance who was just smiling at me. As I looked around the room I saw a mixture of expressions, from shock to anger, concern and even pleased. Such an array of emotions from others when I couldn’t even figure out what the hell was going on or how I felt about it. Mate? No…we must have that wrong. It’s a joke. Right? “It’s definitely not a joke, Signe.” Aerona said, and if we were in wolf form right now, I know she’d be drooling. I looked back at the man who I’d just met. Actually, I haven’t even met yet. He just simply barged into the room for goddess sake and here I was, swooning over him. I mean, he’s not bad to look at. Mate bond or pull aside, I mean, yeah, now I’m almost drooling. His green eyes, that I’d be more than happy to continue to be lost in for the next few hours are the first thing that I noticed. He has gorgeous dark brown hair that’s cut sho
Asher POVThe look on her face went from curiosity to utter devastation in two seconds flat. Rejection wasn’t easy on a wolf. They felt it down in the very depths of their soul. I felt bad that I had to reject her, but I couldn’t risk any of my enemies, especially Ian, using my mate against me to get what they wanted. “Are you crazy?! We can’t reject our Mate! I refuse to do it, Asher. I will not break her wolf like that. I can already feel her wolf and she’s strong.” Thor was frantic. The panic in his voice was something I had never heard from my generally over-confident wolf. A Mate was a liability. A way for others to get leverage over you and manipulate you to their will. I just couldn’t allow that to happen. My pack was counting on me to keep them safe and in order to do that I needed no distractions. It was obvious in just the first two minutes of meeting my mate that all of my beliefs were true. All my brother did was shake her hand and I couldn’t repress the growl that esc
Signe POV I watched him seemingly waltz out of my life through the same exact door he had walked into it. I mean, his brother said they’d be right right back, but here I was standing there at a loss for words. Did I just discover and lose my mate in a matter of two minutes? What did I do wrong? Did he have a lover back home? Was he already mated to another she wolf? I hadn’t heard that he had a chosen mate back at Blood Moon, but that didn’t mean it wasn’t possible. The thought made my heart ache. So many questions with absolutely zero answers. I mean, it can’t just be me. He doesn’t know me. Yet, the only words he has spoken to me were that he didn’t want a mate. “He mentioned that he didn’t want a mate. Maybe he thought he was never going to get one and had moved on from the idea?” Aerona said. “Or he has a chosen mate back at his pack and he’s worried that a fated mate will ruin everything.” I contemplated. “Wait, when in the hell did you become so at peace with this
Signe POV I couldn't believe that he walked by me without even looking at me. It's not as though I hadn't seen him already staring at me just a few moments ago. I turned my body around as he rushed by me following his quick and powerful strides with my eyes all the way to the table. He stopped in front of Alpha Lance, thrust his hand out and just stood there. Waiting. I looked over at Alpha Lance to see if he would accept Alpha Asher's extended hand. After what seemed like five minutes, but I know was more like five seconds, Alpha Lance finally extended his own hand grapsing Alpha Asher’s hand firmly. One quick shake and they were off. "Alright Alpha Asher. Let me introduce you to those who help in advising me and protecting this pack. Here,” he gestured to his right, “is my Beta, Owen." Beta Owen stepped forward and shook hands with Asher. "Next to him is his daughter and our future Beta, Lena." Lena just nodded her head at the introduction. "Next we have my son and fu
I was curious what this alliance would mean as well. “I’m not asking for all or even most of your warriors by any means. I would never want you to leave your own pack in a precarious position against Ian if he were to find out about our alliance and decide to attack you because of it.” Alpha Asher responded. Alpha Lance just nodded, encouraging Alpha Asher to continue. “Our pack houses are three hours apart by car and an hour to an hour and a half by wolf. I’m asking for added patrols along our shared borders to ensure nobody gets through onto Blood Moon or Crescent Moon pack lands undetected. I would do the same, also helping to ensure nobody was able to sneak onto either of our lands. I’d also like to request half a dozen of your best warriors to be added to my border patrol along the borders I share with Midnight Pack. I was also hoping for another hundred or two to be at the ready if needed.” Alpha Asher finished his explanation and continued to look at Alpha Lance expect
"Wait! What?!" Aerona and I exclaimed out loud. Only, I was the only one that everybody could hear. I snapped my head to look at Alpha Lance. "I'm sorry Alpha Lance, but I don't feel as though the supposed mate bond between Signe and myself is really much of your concern." Alpha Asher growled out.“Supposed mate bond?” Aerona said as if she was questioning Asher’s sanity. Alpha Lance didn't even so much as flinch at Alpha Asher's response. "You're right. It's not. However, it is a concern to Signe and as she is one of my pack members, I do have a right as her Alpha to help her out where I feel necessary. As of this moment, I feel that one of those times is now." Alpha Lance responded in a 'I won't take no for an answer' tone. "I will not be forced to talk with somebody just because you say to, Lance." He spat out. "Asher, you're being unreasonable. Just talk with the damn girl. If the Moon Goddess-" Alex started to say. "Fuck the Moon Goddess. She doesn't run my life. I
Signe POV I was shaking a little, but trying not to show it. As much as I wanted to have this talk, I also didn't want to have this talk at the same time. "All right, do we want to step outside?" I asked Asher. "Signe, the rest of us will vacate the room and leave you two to talk." Alpha Lance said. He then turned to Alex. "Would you care to join us downstairs for lunch? Talk of war has made me completely famished." Alex nodded to Alpha Lance, squeezed Asher on the shoulder and followed behind the rest of my pack members that were in this room on their way out. Lena looked back at me as she was about to exit through the door. With a sad look on her face she mouthed good luck to me and disappeared around the corner. I took a deep breath and turned to Asher. He wasn't even looking at me. Rather, he was looking at his hands as if he had unexpectedly found something interesting there that he had never seen before. Suddenly, he looked up and caught my eyes and I couldn't lo
