CHAPTER 10
Dilemma
" Do you want me, Agnes? Even if I will have nothing, would you still want me?"
She stared at his eyes. If only you know Chris Duvier, that my heart already belongs to you. Long before you set eyes on my sister. Much longer before that. The first day when I saw you standing in front of the horse while you talked to them. My heart was also communicating with you. Long before you glance at me dismissively you already took my heart away. I love you. Even now, my heart is aching, I will still love you because part of me is already yours a long time ago.
Suddenly unbearable pain twisted her heart. She said, "What change you, Chris Duvier? I remember, a boy who was good and kind. What happen to you?" She asked him sadly. Her hand unconsciously touched his beautiful face.
He laughed sarcastically, "Life happens Agnes. Unfortunately, you Walden's - your family made me this way. "
"I'm sorry." She said simply. Her heart aching for him. The pain of losing the love of his life on your wedding day was something, she cannot comprehend how painful and embarrassing it was for him. The scandal that comes after that nearly destroyed her too. Until now, she can still hear the bad rumors about her. People pitied him. Chris hates pity. This must have driven him away from the town.
" Sorry isn't enough Agnes."
" What must I do to right the wrong my family did to you."
Chris's eyes glittered, " You could start with a kiss..." Her hand stilled just beneath his jaw. She looked at him with those blue-green eyes, her expression gentle. She is bewitching and despite himself, he felt drawn to her. His lips gently lowered on her luscious lips. She did not move. She waited for him.
“Would it lessen the pain, if I let you kiss me?” Chris stared for a long time at the beguiling woman lying on the sofa.
“I’m afraid not. You have to pay more than what you’re offering me.” He matches her tone. Playing her music. His blood pounded so hard. Feeling her body beneath him. Gently, he touches her lips.
She felt the heat of his touch. Knowing that she was losing a battle that never even started. She wondered, how he can deny him. “I might be willing to offer more---” the words just come out from her unchecked. Chris slowly lowered his lips to hers.
"Ehem... " Both of them start guiltily. He moved away from her and looked at the wedding planner who was standing at the archway as if nothing happens. "I'm sorry to bother---", he said innocently.
" A bother? That's an understatement of the year. You’re a pest." Chris sharply said to the woman, who flushed. "Next time when I'm about to kiss my fiancée make sure you disappear."
Agnes smiled at the wedding planner. She thanks heaven that the kiss did not happen. "Don't mind my future husband."
Chris felt he was cheated. He wanted that kiss so much that the thought made him madder by the minute, " I still want that kiss, Agnes." She blushed. " I will get it with interest next time."
There will be no next time. She bowed. She turned her back at him and focus on the poor woman, who looked terrified at Chris Duvier, "What is it, Ms. Jones?""The actress, your sister Lea is here." She stared at the woman for a long time. Lea is here?
Lea appeared beside the wedding planner, beautiful and radiant wearing a simple white designer dress. Her presence seems to brighten the room but cast ominous darkness to her heart. She struggled to stand up from the sofa and unconsciously pushed Chris away from her.
" Did I come at the wrong time?" Lea sweetly asked, fixing her very blue eyes to Chris.
He smiled charmingly at her and slowly took a step towards her sister. His eyes glowing with admiration, never leaving Lea’s face. "Did I ever tell you that you’re never late? You can always come to me anytime you want."
He gently took both her hands and kissed them. Lea's eyes misted. Her face glowed with joy as she gazed at Chris. "No, never. I'm always your priority." She said huskily.
Agnes swallowed hard. Her breathing was shallower and more painful than the last inhale. Watching them together felt like she was the outsider and villain in the movie. The venom of jealousy surfaced without regard to propriety. She spoke before she can stop herself, " Priority. My ass---"
The wedding planner who has been watching the whole scenario gasped upon hearing her swear word. But Agnes is beyond that now, she smiled sweetly at both of them and sauntered towards Chris. Her eyes fixed at him and slowly raised her arms around his neck while her lips reached for his mouth.
The kiss took him by surprise as Agnes branded his lips with surprising heat. "This my love was just the installment." She whispered at him. Whatever possess her was beyond she could understand. Just the sudden heat of jealousy, let her forget that Chris was Lea’s property.
Chris stared at her blankly then she winked at him slyly. “Darling, I know I’m now your new priority, right?" Then she turns to her sister who was watching the whole scenario coolly. However, Agnes can see that her sister's eyes brimming with anger. She knows that look too well."Glad to see you again Lea." She smiled at her sister, forcing her voice to sound calm.
" Same her older sister." The jibe hit home. She perfunctorily kisses both her cheeks. "Your invitation just came on time when I have a break from work."
"Invitation?”, she looked at Lea confused.
"So, it's not you who invited me? Maybe it's auntie." Lea said. She cannot imagine her aunt inviting her sister.
"No, it's not me either." Lady Elizabeth walked in and took a step closer at Lea. She gives her a warm embrace and said happily, " Nevertheless I’m glad your here."
Agnes had a sinking feeling that she knows who invited her sister. Her fears confirmed when Chris Duvier spoke, "I took the liberty of inviting her." He looked at Agnes directly, "I know her presence will make you happy darling."
"How thoughtful Darling," she said too sweetly." But next time, though holler me if you need to give me another surprise."
Chris Duvier smiled back and said meaningfully, "I like surprises---" His eyes lingered on her lips. "--very much."
Agnes blushed. He watched her intently, enjoying her face turning red. Oh, Agnes what a delight you are. Unbidden thoughts came to his mind. He frowned, not liking the feeling that she can provoke. He doesn’t want to think of the kiss. But even now, it's still burning on his skin. The girl can kiss. He wondered where she practices or how many men she already tempted. Chris angrily glanced at Agnes. Men will desire her. She might have Leas’ stunning beauty but she can also command the attention of men who like women with curves. He has a different taste of women. They must be the epitome of elegance and grace. He knows he will not fall for Agnes. That is so true especially now that he saw Lea. Still, she can make his heartbeat race. The attraction between them was still strong. So why bother analyzing his feelings towards Agnes.
"Why you’re so quiet Duvier?" Lady Elizabeth intently watched him.
He snapped out of his thoughts and focus on the Baroness’s observant stare, "I'm just glad that you will have your reunion, my dear Lady. Glad to contribute to your happiness." He said sarcastically.
"When a man stared at a woman like that, it means only one thing-- "
"Please spare me the details, my lady. " His pulse quickened. He needs to get out of this place before Lady Elizabeth can decipher his feelings. " I have to go now. Enjoy spending my money. I already instructed my people to take care of the bills. "
“How generous of you, Duvier.” She said mocking his panic look. The old hag knows there was something amiss with Duvier’s reaction. Men had looked at Agnes, the same way as he looks at her now. She realized, even if Lea was in the same room, Agnes could still affect the man.
He left them without saying goodbye. Agnes, confused with his reaction watched his retreating back silently. She felt that he abandoned her again. She felt that their secret contract did not change how he treated her. He seems worst than the last time.
"What's with him?" Lea asked confused at the sudden departure of Chris Duvier.
Agnes irritated by his sudden departure flopped at the sofa like a petulant child, “Well, it's not the first time he left me hanging. He must have thought this whole wedding doesn't need him."
Lady Elizabeth grinned." Don’t be too hard on yourself Agnes, he was just salvaging his pride. It's what you call, to retreat or in layman terms running away."
CHAPTER 11 Far, far away in a distant land, a bride stood in front of the entrance of the church fidgeting and very worried about her future. Agnes felt her secure world tumbling down on her as she gazed at the heavy door of the church. She must have lost her mind to agree to this solemn and religious event turning into a farce of make-believe love story that the world thought was perfect as the media continually hype for the sake of one Chris Duvier. "Lord, please do not strike me with lighting." Agnes silently prayed. Her cold clammy hands gripped the floral bouquet that cascaded down to the floor. It was like carrying sacksful of guilt and remorse on this momentous occasion. She dreaded this day but there was no turning back now. It is a do-or-die moment for her now. Agnes holds back her tears as she suddenly heard the orchestra start the wedding march. The steps she took, timid and uneasy and each step se
CHAPTER 12Sunshine poured inside her bedroom making her wince when she opens her eyes. She looked around and saw her wedding gown fold neatly in a box. She remembered, her Aunt Liz and the servants waiting for the newlywed at the castle entrance. Her new husband, step down from the car while she followed clumsily behind with the bellows of white lace and tulle. Ann ran towards her and help her with the gown she was wearing. The maid stopped in her tracks when she saw Agnes’ face, mascara and makeup dried up on her cheeks after she stops crying. Ann hurriedly pulls out from her pocket a white handkerchief and wipes her face tenderly. “Beas, the man is a beast. I can’t believe he made you cry.” Chris strode at the steps of the castle and smiled triumphantly. His eyes roamed at the old building with possession in his eyes. He smi
CHAPTER 13 The early morning fog covered her figure as she tries to sneak in back to Winshord. Agnes climbed stealthily to the back gate and sprinted towards the veranda where her bedroom was located. She ran to the stone steps, open the sliding door with her spare key, and safely entered her room with no hitched. She sighed in relief. At last, she was safe in her bedroom. Undressing quickly, she dived in the covers of her bed. A blissful sigh escapes from her lips. At last, she sleeps peacefully. Fuzzily, she felt a presence beside her on the bed. Sleepily, she pushes the covers beside her and saw an arm. A male arm lazily stroked her leg. She screams but before she can do so, a hand covered her mouth. She struggled and push and kicked him on the stomach. “Ouch!” Chris Duvier rol
CHAPTER 14 “The man is impossible!”, she stormed inside the castle startling the servants who were cleaning the room. The usually amiable and nice heiress frightened the new maid who fought with Ann, just a couple of days ago. It cemented her observation that the master and mistress of the castle would surely end their marriage very soon. She could just feel her pockets full of money after she and Ann, wager their monthly salaries. Agnes plopped down on one of the chairs. Her anger increased by the minute when she recalled what Chris Duvier said to her. It’s been a week since he has been treating her like a pariah. He ignored her doggedly and refuse to even look at her. When she cannot take it anymore, she decided to settle the matter by baking him a cake as a form of appeasement for her lack of experience in lovemaking. She assumed that the reason her husband
CHAPTER 15 “Where are my clothes?!” Agnes screamed at the maid who looked frightened at her outburst. Ann averted her eyes and looked the other way. “Your aunt told me to throw away your clothes and your er---lingerie.” Pulling at one of the new clothes hanging neatly in her closet, Agnes almost cringes at the open neckline when she inspected the piece of cloth. “You can’t expect me to wear this garbage. Are you?” she asked incredulously at Ann, who looks more uncomfortable every minute. Ann cleared her throat and said, “Mario, your wedding gown designer pick all the clothes and underwear for you. He said all of these are exquisite and suited to your form perfectly. Chris Duvier will drool when he sees you wearing these clothes.” She laughed
CHAPTER 16 How true were David’s concerns and keen observation? Chris Duvier was assaulted by a roller coaster of emotion. The witch has amp her spell on him. He's been avoiding Agnes especially during meal time but it seems she always ends up dining with him. The first Monday morning when he had his breakfast supposed to be alone, she joins him wearing almost nothing. Even Smith who was guiding the maid while serving the food almost collapses in shock. She was wearing flowing lacy lingerie in pink that left nothing to the imagination. He almost chokes on his coffee. “What are you doing here?!” he demanded. “Wearing that?” “Of course, having my breakfast.” She smiled innocently at him. “You like it, love?” He never knows that food could be se
CHAPTER 17 Agnes excitedly aboard at the balloon basket. It was her first time riding one. She has been looking forward to it. Her aunt gave her an envelope completely with an itinerary and a week's stay in a very secluded town where the only transport would be horses and balloons. The balloon, however, was the main transport and it only flew twice a week. She needs to be out of Winshord Castle. The stunt she just made for the week was making her more agitated. She lost a lot of sleep trying to find a way to appeal to her husband. The timing of going on a vacation was a relief. "Aren't we flying yet?" She shouted at the deaf older man. She realized he couldn't hear her when he ignored her completely. The old pilot glances at his watch. "I'm not going to wait for that guy. So late already---" He started untying the rope. "
CHAPTER 18 Dinner with Chris was quiet. She watched him attack a piece of steak and gulp his wine like water.” “You’re going to get drunk.” She cannot help but warn him. After leaving her in a foul mood, he returns to the cottage angrier. “Worried of your husband, wife?” “I’m worried for me. No woman would like to sleep with a drunk on her bedside.” “Bedside?” Amused, Chris mockingly at her. “If you like to sleep with me instead of the floor, I can accommodate you.” “You know that’s not what I mean.” “Tell me, Agnes, what do you mean.” Silence. Then, she took a deep breath, “I’m afraid of you.” Chris Duvier looked at her intently, “Fear.” he smiled at her, “You’re afraid of me? Why? I
CHAPTER 49 Agnes looked at David with eyes brimming with tears. Her beautiful green eyes looked like the misty forest of Winshord Castle moors. She was seating across from him inside a small cafe that operated twenty-four hours a day near the bus station. The cafe was deserted, except for the sleepy worker of the establishment and an aged man snoozing at a corner. Her hand was twisting the yellowed table cloth, as she nervously face David. “It’s okay if you will not forgive me,” Agnes said without preamble as the silence stretched between them.“You cause so much pain to your family and friends. I’m not sure whether I should wring your neck out of madness or just hugged you out of relief that you are still alive.”“David, I will not explain why I disappeared, only that I have a very valid reason that I cannot reveal.”David's jaw tightened in anger. “How could you say that Agnes? You of all people should know that what you
CHAPTER 48 “Duvier! What are you doing here?” Barbara tumbled into his arms as he bumped unto her. Chris gasped as he stared at the grinning elderly woman batting her eyes at him coyly. He pulled her up while looking around for Agnes. “Where is she---” “Who?” Barbara stared at him confusedly. He stopped himself from blurting Agnes' name. Instead, he collected himself and tried to smile, covering his blunder. “Lady Elizabeth, I need to see her.” “Ah…” Barbara stared at him for a long time. She got the feeling it was not Lady Elizabeth he was looking for. She wondered if the nosy
CHAPTER 47Agnes pulled down the hooded jacket to cover her face. She was embarking n a surprised if not most unpleasant decision of her life --- to visit her sister in the hospital. She had been hiding from her past until now when she saw her sister rushed to the hospital. Even her aunt and Barbara did not know that she was going to make this trip back to her old world. Yet, the idea of Lea being sick drove her with worry. Her sister was always healthy and she was not known to get sick easily. She wondered what drove Lea to get sick. She just wants to take a look at her secretly and disappear afterward. The hospital was surrounded by reporters and onlookers. All waiting for the news of the famous star. She can see flowers on the entrance filing up and letters of well-wishers. Agnes stopped. She wondered how to get inside without being noticed. The chance of her being seen was high yet only when she can see her sister would make her feel at peace.
CHAPTER 46 Lina or Agnes in her real-life dropped the baking pan she was holding as she saw the news on the television. The anchor grimly announced the news about Lea Walden being rushed to the hospital by her fiancee, Chris Duvier. “The couple who been dating for a long time was last seen together in Duviers penthouse. It was rumored that Chris Duvier, the billionaire proposed to the beautiful actress tonight. Yet. Something had happened when the actress Lea Walden collapsed and was rushed to the hospital with her loving fiancee in tow. Stay tuned for more news.” “Are you alright, Lina?” Lina stumbled and tried to sit down on one of the stools near the counter. Worriedly, her assistant baker touched her forehead. “You seemed not well. Why don’t you go home and I will finish the baking here.” She sig
CHAPTER 45 The man put down the dossier of Lina Summers in front of the billionaire, Chris Duvier. The private agent which was hired months ago was surprised with the request and thought, he hit the jackpot. And he did. He cannot believe what he found out about Lina Summers---he has no doubt who she was. “Everything about her was in that document. The real Lina Summers died when she was very young. Ms. Agnes Duvier just took her name.” “Changing one’s identity was expensive and few correct connections. Agnes cannot do that. Even if she was a Walden, her connection cannot reach that point. How did she do it?” “Barbara Barry pulled all the strings.” The detective said gravely. “Her connection was enough to cover up your wife’s supposed death. The boat was her personal property and the reporter who broke the first news was her people.”
CHAPTER 44 Lady Elizabeth, listened to the panic-stricken voice of her friend as she told her about Chris Duvier's presence in Riverside. She was numb. The possibility, of being discovered did cross her mind. She was ready to face the consequence but when it happens for real, her knees buckled with apprehension. Chris Duvier is an exacting man. A dangerous enemy. What he hates most were liars like them. They managed to dupe one of the most powerful men in the country. It looks like the wheels had turned. Time to pay up for their misdeeds. She remembered too clearly when Agnes returns home from her visit to Chris Duvier. She was trembling when she entered the library where Lady Elizabeth was conducting her business. Agnes sat down at the big wing chair silently watching her. “What happened, child?” She looked in alarm at Agnes whose eyes were very red from c
CHAPTER 43 Autumn had arrived in Riverside. The trees have turned into a fiery glow of orange, yellows, and reds. It’s Lina’s favorite season and her son, Adam. They would go out in the afternoon and play underneath the maple trees in their backyard. She would pretend to shovel Adam inside a pile of leaves. Her son would growl and try to catch her while she pretended to be afraid. Their peals of laughter would ring the backyard. Later, Rita would call them back for a snack of muffins and warm milk. She felt at ease now. The money from their investor had been pouring on their bakeshop and she paid her bank loan diligently. Joan Rogers visited her every week to check on the progress of the business. She also brought a lot of consultants and big players in the food industry business to help her set up the bakeshop. Lina has started building a commissary near her first bakeshop and she was hiring more
CHAPTER 42 Barbara Barry and Lady Elizabeth retired to the study, to enjoy the tea and the goodwill cake which was served at dinner. Both of them had a sweet tooth and both loved teas. They both drink it all day long like water. Comfortably seated together with a burning fireplace near them, they assumed their usual gossip, especially what happens at dinner. “Poor Lea…” Lady Elizabeth murmured sadly. Barbara sighed, “It looks like Duvier is still stuck in the past.” “Yes...”, She sighed worriedly, “What have we done Barb? So much misery. Every time I look at Duvier, I wondered if we did the right thing.” “Shhh…quite somebody might hear us.” She look
CHAPTER 41 Everybody is tiptoeing around the boss. Since, the death of his wife, Chris Duvier had changed drastically. He was constantly working like he was driving himself to destruction. The stress level had affected the company. They are growing exponentially but they have more employees resigning because of the stress and demands of Chris Duvier himself. He never smiled too. He never goes out to date and lost interest in women. He dropped a lot of weight and his eyes have dark circles around them. He was practically like the ghost of a man. David Bern was so worried about his friend that he moves back and work with Chris Duvier again. It was a gloomy time for the company. Joan Rogers, his secretary, had faithfully worked for the man but she too, was on the brink of giving up. She doesn’t know when he will return to normal. When he strode into th
