CHAPTER 14
“The man is impossible!”, she stormed inside the castle startling the servants who were cleaning the room. The usually amiable and nice heiress frightened the new maid who fought with Ann, just a couple of days ago. It cemented her observation that the master and mistress of the castle would surely end their marriage very soon. She could just feel her pockets full of money after she and Ann, wager their monthly salaries.
Agnes plopped down on one of the chairs. Her anger increased by the minute when she recalled what Chris Duvier said to her. It’s been a week since he has been treating her like a pariah. He ignored her doggedly and refuse to even look at her. When she cannot take it anymore, she decided to settle the matter by baking him a cake as a form of appeasement for her lack of experience in lovemaking. She assumed that the reason her husband left was that her inexperience had driven him away.
Yet, when she presented the cake to him, his cold grey eyes slice her from head to toe and said mockingly, “What’s this? You wanted to apply as a baker?”
She blushed and tried to muster the courage to hold her tongue. She smiled at him sweetly and said, “This my husband is my apology cake. Whatever, I did wrong during these past days. I want to say sorry. Please forgive me if I ever said or done something wrong.”
“No cake can make me accept your apology. However, I might as well take the cake. We don’t want to waste it, would we?”
Agnes frowned in confusion. She said crossly, “Are you going to ruin my whole week just because of my inexperience?”
This time, it is Chris Duvier who turned to be confused, “Inexperience?”
“Yes, that morning when we make love, you left me because I’m not good enough, didn’t you? Well, it’s not my fault, that I have no experience. Nobody would like to date me. The boys in this town are too afraid to date the witch.”
Chris Duvier blinked, amazed at her candidness, and stunned by her deduction, “Whatever gives you the idea that I found you inadequate?”
“Because you left me before you…” she blushed and said in a whisper “…can complete your er--duties.”
The slow and lazy smile on his face made her annoyed then he said, “I was bored.”
Reason left her, she was mad now, “Bored? Your bored?!”
“Yes, darling---” Plook! The sound of the cake landing on his face made him stop. He stared at her. Shock. His body and mind froze.
He watched the retreating back of a madwoman. Her black hair swing with the movement of her body. She was half running and walking, storming towards the castle. Chris Duvier smiled while watching her. He licked and tasted the cake that her wife made. It’s not bad, not bad at all.
Smith witnessed the whole drama. He had a bad feeling that it’s going to be a tough climb. He must secure the book that the Lady had instructed. It will help a lot with their dilemma.
He cleared his throat. Chris Duvier turned around and saw the butler. He smiled at the old man while still eating the cake.
“What is it Smith?” he said while licking the morsels on his fingers, “God, she can bake a delicious cake.” His wife had many surprising talents that unfolded to him in the startling scenario.
“The baroness wanted to see you in her study.”
“Please tell Lady Elizabeth, that for now, I can’t come. I will see her tonight after dinner.”
“Yes sir. I will inform her.” Then, the servant left hurriedly. He still needs to look for that book. He hopes that his friends in the town can dig up where to look for it. A miracle is needed to save the marriage. Ann might lose the wager and he could also lose his favorite watch to Chris Duvier’s driver. Smith hurriedly reported to Lady Elizabeth what happens. The baroness worriedly stared at the window. Outside, the beautiful spread of nature as far as the eyes can see, look serene but inside the grand lady's heart and mind were filled with worry and sadness. She cannot give up on her dream for Agnes. She does not want her to give up on love as she did. Her niece must have her dreams come true. It was her second chance through her.
Nighttime came. The baroness was already waiting for Chris Duvier to arrive. She does not know what will become of their meeting tonight but she must make sure she will succeed. Lady Elizabeth dresses carefully. She knows that Chris Duvier could hold his own. Both are stubborn and determined to win and the pawn in their game is her niece, Agnes.
The study door opens and the man she is waiting for walk-in thirty minutes late. He nods at the woman in front of him and sat down in one of the chairs facing the Baroness, without her invitation.
“You're late!” she said sharply at him.
“I’m not aware that I need to be on time. Did you wait long, my Lady?” he asked mockingly.
“Duvier…I’m not here to argue. You already had your hands full with Agnes.” She smiled at him and said, “Servants talk. It was causing much friction with the old and new workers.”
“What do you mean Lady Elizabeth?”
“One of the maids seen you leaving Agnes bedroom,” she paused and said, “You left angry as per the house help account. After that, they observe that you ignored my niece and you refuse to dine with her.”
“I don’t care what other people say Lady Elizabeth. Let them gossip about us.” Chris Duvier said coldly.
The old Baroness sighed. It looks like it’s going to be difficult to convince the man. Yet, she cannot bow down. She must follow her game plan to the end.
“Duvier, this is a personal request. Your relationship with my niece is getting on everybody’s nerves. It’s not right that you treat your wife like a menace. Agnes can be amiable with proper er-- sensitivity from you.”
He smiled mockingly and said, “Please be more specific on your request my Lady.”
“You wanted an heir Duvier. A willing woman is better than an unwilling one. Treat her like your wife. Try to work on your marriage. She would willingly come to you.”
“No.” he coldly said. “I’m not going to do what you suggested. Agnes will come to me if I want to. In my own time and my terms.”
Chris Duvier abruptly stood up. He said, “I can’t believe after you sold your niece to me, now you push her to my bed. Agnes is just a pawn to you but I cannot understand why you had to go to that extreme in treating your niece like meat.”
Lady Elizabeth tried to control her anger. She took a deep breath and said, “You don’t have the right to say that Duvier. My actions are for my niece's security and happiness. In due time, you might learn to accept her.”
“Are you hoping that we will remain in this sham marriage and I will fall in love with your niece, my lady?”, he laughed contemptuously. “I’m only here because I am the new master of Winshord Castle. I’m still in love with Lea and her sister doesn’t even come second.”
“Duvier!” she said with a voice on the verge of a shrill. “Agnes is the most loving and beautiful person you will ever know. She is special. Please don’t make her unhappy, I’m begging you. Just for the duration of your marriage.”
He stared down at her. She had suddenly looked much older than her age. The baroness is still trembling when she slumps down on the chair.
“It took me eight years to stand in front of you Lady Elizabeth. Now, I had the chance to tell you, my plan. Agnes will fall in love with me then I will break her as the Walden’s breaks me.”
Lady Elizabeth paled, “Is this the reason why you return Duvier?”
His eyes glittered with determination and hatred, “I hope you sleep well. Have a good night.”
He left her stricken by his revelation. Lady Elizabeth felt the world comes tumbling down. The web she tried to make is becoming her prison. She thought giving Agnes the man she truly loves would make her niece happy and secure but tonight’s revelation had made her worry about Agnes' future.
All night, the baroness tosses and turned looking for reprieved of the gloomy feeling that settled in her heart. What has she done? Dear God, please hear my prayer, let Agnes be happy. Her silent prayer echoes to heaven, hoping the universe will hear her fervent plea.
CHAPTER 15 “Where are my clothes?!” Agnes screamed at the maid who looked frightened at her outburst. Ann averted her eyes and looked the other way. “Your aunt told me to throw away your clothes and your er---lingerie.” Pulling at one of the new clothes hanging neatly in her closet, Agnes almost cringes at the open neckline when she inspected the piece of cloth. “You can’t expect me to wear this garbage. Are you?” she asked incredulously at Ann, who looks more uncomfortable every minute. Ann cleared her throat and said, “Mario, your wedding gown designer pick all the clothes and underwear for you. He said all of these are exquisite and suited to your form perfectly. Chris Duvier will drool when he sees you wearing these clothes.” She laughed
CHAPTER 16 How true were David’s concerns and keen observation? Chris Duvier was assaulted by a roller coaster of emotion. The witch has amp her spell on him. He's been avoiding Agnes especially during meal time but it seems she always ends up dining with him. The first Monday morning when he had his breakfast supposed to be alone, she joins him wearing almost nothing. Even Smith who was guiding the maid while serving the food almost collapses in shock. She was wearing flowing lacy lingerie in pink that left nothing to the imagination. He almost chokes on his coffee. “What are you doing here?!” he demanded. “Wearing that?” “Of course, having my breakfast.” She smiled innocently at him. “You like it, love?” He never knows that food could be se
CHAPTER 17 Agnes excitedly aboard at the balloon basket. It was her first time riding one. She has been looking forward to it. Her aunt gave her an envelope completely with an itinerary and a week's stay in a very secluded town where the only transport would be horses and balloons. The balloon, however, was the main transport and it only flew twice a week. She needs to be out of Winshord Castle. The stunt she just made for the week was making her more agitated. She lost a lot of sleep trying to find a way to appeal to her husband. The timing of going on a vacation was a relief. "Aren't we flying yet?" She shouted at the deaf older man. She realized he couldn't hear her when he ignored her completely. The old pilot glances at his watch. "I'm not going to wait for that guy. So late already---" He started untying the rope. "
CHAPTER 18 Dinner with Chris was quiet. She watched him attack a piece of steak and gulp his wine like water.” “You’re going to get drunk.” She cannot help but warn him. After leaving her in a foul mood, he returns to the cottage angrier. “Worried of your husband, wife?” “I’m worried for me. No woman would like to sleep with a drunk on her bedside.” “Bedside?” Amused, Chris mockingly at her. “If you like to sleep with me instead of the floor, I can accommodate you.” “You know that’s not what I mean.” “Tell me, Agnes, what do you mean.” Silence. Then, she took a deep breath, “I’m afraid of you.” Chris Duvier looked at her intently, “Fear.” he smiled at her, “You’re afraid of me? Why? I
CHAPTER 19 He thought he got her, but hours later, he was already sweating bullets. She can play. He did not know he married a Chessmaster. Agnes seems to move her pieces with no care, but it becomes a trap for him. In the third round, he gives up. A beautiful green-eyed witch genuinely beat him. "Are you sure you want to give up?" She asked innocently. "Don't laugh." He growled at her. Her laughter echoed in the cottage room. It was music to hear her laugh. She was beautiful, and Chris felt the urge to kiss her. "What is my punishment?" Chris gently touched the rim of his wine glass
CHAPTER 20 Sweet torture, that's the word that keeps on haunting him about Agnes' new assault. He can't sleep nor eat. His mind is filled with desire with the rate that his wife is going; it looks like she is calling the shot. He dreaded going for his meals since Agnes kept joining him, yet he wanted to see her badly. His body is so taut that he doesn't know if he can take it anymore. After Agnes returned from her vacation, something changed in her. She was feistier and intentionally provoked him. Agnes watched him intently as he was having his afternoon coffee. She especially made a beautiful cake for him. He stared at the cake decorated with a smiley face and the word "thank you" on it. "What is this for?" "A thank you cake." Chris frowned, "Why do I deserve it? Are you trying to mock me?"
CHAPTER 21 David Bern observes the girl walking towards her with the unconscious grace that comes from good family breeding. Her head held high like a queen floated towards him. The first time he sees Agnes Walden, he knows she would be different. He could see the intelligence in her green eyes as she gazed at him, studying him like a curious child. She was beautiful too, but not in the usual mold. He was fascinated with the woman, and he could not understand why Chris would treat her like this. He observes that she is looking downcast. David looked at her worriedly. He tried to smile, but it fell short. "Hi, Agnes..." "David..." she acknowledged with a nod. Her eyes penetrated to his soul. His guilt is beyond compare now. "Welcome to my humble abode." It is truly a humble abode. It's not a
CHAPTER 22 Chris Duvier heard the news. His brows furrowed with annoyance. He cannot believe his trusted friend just disobeyed his orders. He was angry, and most of all, felt betrayed. He slammed the document on his desk and punched the intercom. His secretary entered the door, notebook and pen in hand."Sir?""Make sure you informed me when David arrived from the island," he said coldly. Joan Rogers, his secretary, looked at his boss. Shivers ran from her body. If he is in this mood, it's a clear sign of danger. She must inform the staff to thread gently today."Anything else, sir?""Cancel all my meetings today.""Huh..." she stared at him. David is in trouble!"Well, of course, sir." The secretary hurriedly left and sent emergency news to the staff.David Bern entered the office and noticed the silence right away. He had just arrived from the island, the frantic message and missed calls already piling up on his cell phone. David sighed and
CHAPTER 49 Agnes looked at David with eyes brimming with tears. Her beautiful green eyes looked like the misty forest of Winshord Castle moors. She was seating across from him inside a small cafe that operated twenty-four hours a day near the bus station. The cafe was deserted, except for the sleepy worker of the establishment and an aged man snoozing at a corner. Her hand was twisting the yellowed table cloth, as she nervously face David. “It’s okay if you will not forgive me,” Agnes said without preamble as the silence stretched between them.“You cause so much pain to your family and friends. I’m not sure whether I should wring your neck out of madness or just hugged you out of relief that you are still alive.”“David, I will not explain why I disappeared, only that I have a very valid reason that I cannot reveal.”David's jaw tightened in anger. “How could you say that Agnes? You of all people should know that what you
CHAPTER 48 “Duvier! What are you doing here?” Barbara tumbled into his arms as he bumped unto her. Chris gasped as he stared at the grinning elderly woman batting her eyes at him coyly. He pulled her up while looking around for Agnes. “Where is she---” “Who?” Barbara stared at him confusedly. He stopped himself from blurting Agnes' name. Instead, he collected himself and tried to smile, covering his blunder. “Lady Elizabeth, I need to see her.” “Ah…” Barbara stared at him for a long time. She got the feeling it was not Lady Elizabeth he was looking for. She wondered if the nosy
CHAPTER 47Agnes pulled down the hooded jacket to cover her face. She was embarking n a surprised if not most unpleasant decision of her life --- to visit her sister in the hospital. She had been hiding from her past until now when she saw her sister rushed to the hospital. Even her aunt and Barbara did not know that she was going to make this trip back to her old world. Yet, the idea of Lea being sick drove her with worry. Her sister was always healthy and she was not known to get sick easily. She wondered what drove Lea to get sick. She just wants to take a look at her secretly and disappear afterward. The hospital was surrounded by reporters and onlookers. All waiting for the news of the famous star. She can see flowers on the entrance filing up and letters of well-wishers. Agnes stopped. She wondered how to get inside without being noticed. The chance of her being seen was high yet only when she can see her sister would make her feel at peace.
CHAPTER 46 Lina or Agnes in her real-life dropped the baking pan she was holding as she saw the news on the television. The anchor grimly announced the news about Lea Walden being rushed to the hospital by her fiancee, Chris Duvier. “The couple who been dating for a long time was last seen together in Duviers penthouse. It was rumored that Chris Duvier, the billionaire proposed to the beautiful actress tonight. Yet. Something had happened when the actress Lea Walden collapsed and was rushed to the hospital with her loving fiancee in tow. Stay tuned for more news.” “Are you alright, Lina?” Lina stumbled and tried to sit down on one of the stools near the counter. Worriedly, her assistant baker touched her forehead. “You seemed not well. Why don’t you go home and I will finish the baking here.” She sig
CHAPTER 45 The man put down the dossier of Lina Summers in front of the billionaire, Chris Duvier. The private agent which was hired months ago was surprised with the request and thought, he hit the jackpot. And he did. He cannot believe what he found out about Lina Summers---he has no doubt who she was. “Everything about her was in that document. The real Lina Summers died when she was very young. Ms. Agnes Duvier just took her name.” “Changing one’s identity was expensive and few correct connections. Agnes cannot do that. Even if she was a Walden, her connection cannot reach that point. How did she do it?” “Barbara Barry pulled all the strings.” The detective said gravely. “Her connection was enough to cover up your wife’s supposed death. The boat was her personal property and the reporter who broke the first news was her people.”
CHAPTER 44 Lady Elizabeth, listened to the panic-stricken voice of her friend as she told her about Chris Duvier's presence in Riverside. She was numb. The possibility, of being discovered did cross her mind. She was ready to face the consequence but when it happens for real, her knees buckled with apprehension. Chris Duvier is an exacting man. A dangerous enemy. What he hates most were liars like them. They managed to dupe one of the most powerful men in the country. It looks like the wheels had turned. Time to pay up for their misdeeds. She remembered too clearly when Agnes returns home from her visit to Chris Duvier. She was trembling when she entered the library where Lady Elizabeth was conducting her business. Agnes sat down at the big wing chair silently watching her. “What happened, child?” She looked in alarm at Agnes whose eyes were very red from c
CHAPTER 43 Autumn had arrived in Riverside. The trees have turned into a fiery glow of orange, yellows, and reds. It’s Lina’s favorite season and her son, Adam. They would go out in the afternoon and play underneath the maple trees in their backyard. She would pretend to shovel Adam inside a pile of leaves. Her son would growl and try to catch her while she pretended to be afraid. Their peals of laughter would ring the backyard. Later, Rita would call them back for a snack of muffins and warm milk. She felt at ease now. The money from their investor had been pouring on their bakeshop and she paid her bank loan diligently. Joan Rogers visited her every week to check on the progress of the business. She also brought a lot of consultants and big players in the food industry business to help her set up the bakeshop. Lina has started building a commissary near her first bakeshop and she was hiring more
CHAPTER 42 Barbara Barry and Lady Elizabeth retired to the study, to enjoy the tea and the goodwill cake which was served at dinner. Both of them had a sweet tooth and both loved teas. They both drink it all day long like water. Comfortably seated together with a burning fireplace near them, they assumed their usual gossip, especially what happens at dinner. “Poor Lea…” Lady Elizabeth murmured sadly. Barbara sighed, “It looks like Duvier is still stuck in the past.” “Yes...”, She sighed worriedly, “What have we done Barb? So much misery. Every time I look at Duvier, I wondered if we did the right thing.” “Shhh…quite somebody might hear us.” She look
CHAPTER 41 Everybody is tiptoeing around the boss. Since, the death of his wife, Chris Duvier had changed drastically. He was constantly working like he was driving himself to destruction. The stress level had affected the company. They are growing exponentially but they have more employees resigning because of the stress and demands of Chris Duvier himself. He never smiled too. He never goes out to date and lost interest in women. He dropped a lot of weight and his eyes have dark circles around them. He was practically like the ghost of a man. David Bern was so worried about his friend that he moves back and work with Chris Duvier again. It was a gloomy time for the company. Joan Rogers, his secretary, had faithfully worked for the man but she too, was on the brink of giving up. She doesn’t know when he will return to normal. When he strode into th
