I wake the following day, and the sun is already beaming through my window. I blink a few times and roll over to grab my phone. I almost jump out of bed when I see it is already eleven. I still have time for a run, but not as long as I would have if I had got up on time. I slip on my clothes and head downstairs. I grab a glass of juice, and when I drink it, I think about the man from the diner yesterday. He must be one of the unmated Alphas. I know he isn't my mate, but something about him made him easy to talk to. I shy away from most higher-ranking wolves. I have never been afraid I only do it to stay unnoticed.
"I like him," Ember says in the back of my mind. "Yes, he was nice." I head to the door to grab my shoes. I need to get going if I plan to get back, shower, and clean up before I have to head to Juliana's house. I run a little further than yesterday before I strip my clothes off and put them in my bag. I let Ember take control. The shift is quick and liberating. She takes off in the same direction we usually run. She is taking her time enjoying the forest and all it has to offer. We reach the lake, and she walks up to drink. I hear a noise coming from the other side of the lake. Ember lifts her head and ears and looks. She turns and bolts back in the direction we came. "What was it? I didn't see anything." I say. "Other wolves are running." She doesn't say anything else, and she doesn't have to. She is running at full speed. We made it back to my house in less than half the time it took us to get to the lake. I shift and head in the house before even dressing. When I walk in the door, I am startled to find Juliana and Shawn standing in my living room. I grab a jacket hanging by the door and wrap it around me. "Give me a minute to get dressed. I will be right back." I tell them. I try to keep as much of myself covered as possible. I know we are werewolves, and nudity comes with the territory, but that is Juliana's mate, so I don't want to walk through my house naked with him here. I jump in the shower and clean off really quick. I don't need to wash my hair. I did that last night. I dry off and throw on leggings and a T-shirt. I head back downstairs, and they are sitting on the couch waiting on me. "I take it you went for a run?" Juliana says, giving me a sideways look. "Yes, I overslept and decided to go when I got up." "Did you run into anyone? Did anyone see you?" Shawn asks, looking worried. "No, but we were at the lake. Ember was drinking when she heard something from across the lake in the woods. We bolted before anyone ran upon us." Shawn looks relieved when I tell him. "We came to warn you not to run or be in your wolf form. The others all got her around nine they decided to go for a group run. They were headed in the direction of the lake. You were already gone when we got here." "Well, thankfully, we dodge a bullet. Thank you both for coming to warn me, though." I tell them, giving them a smile to ease their minds. "Well, we need to head back, but I am going to leave my car here. You can drive it to the house when you are ready." Juliana says, and I give her a big hug to say thank you. After they leave, it doesn't take long with cleaning and doing laundry to be time to head to Juliana's to get dressed. I wonder if they would believe that I am sick.
"You need to go. We deserve to have a mate. I know the Goddess would not forget us." "A mate will complicate things. I have to avenge my parents and brother." I tell Ember so she can remember what the plan is. "A mate could help us with our plan." I had not really thought about that. So I will go, but my plan can not change. I made it to Juliana's house a few minutes earlier than I had agreed to. I knock and wait, but it doesn't take her long to throw the door open and drag me in. I can't help laughing at her as she pulls me to her room and throws me in a chair. "Are you excited?" I ask her cause she is acting a little crazy right now. "Well, yes, it is not every day that I get to dress you up like a doll." "You better put the breaks on no funny business," I tell her, giving her a serious look. I don't use a lot of makeup, and tonight will not be any different. She only laughs and starts doing her magic, as she calls it. Over an hour later... "Ok, I am done. Let's slide this dress on now." I stand and go to turn to look in the mirror, but she grabs my arm. "not yet." So to appease her, I wait to look. She holds the dress while I slide in it not to mess up my hair and makeup she just spent so much time fixing. I stand up and straighten the dress. She hands me a pair of sandals. They are beautiful. The straps are covered with studs. They look like straps of diamonds across my feet. "Everything looks so beautiful." "You can look in the mirror now," She tells me, and I slowly turn. I gasp... Indeed gasp, I don't even recognize myself. I know it is me, but it is like the 4.0 addition. My skin is shinning, and my eyes are bright. The dress looks stunning with the sandals. "I can't go looking like this." Is all I can say. "What do you mean do you not like it?" Juliana asks, almost sounding heartbroken. "I look great. That is the problem. Everyone will be staring at me." She busts out laughing like gut-wrenching laughing at me. "That's the point. You want to look stunning at a mate ball," She says after she can finally stop laughing. "I don't know. I am nervous." "It's ok to be nervous, and remember I will be there too." I hope she is right and this goes well. I help Juliana get ready and do her hair. I do it in an updo. I braided stips on the side back and fastened them into the bun. She looks amazing. Her dress is green and makes her eyes pop. "Shawn just said that I have to meet him at the hall, so we need to get going." I am still nervous and not sure if I can do this. "You got this. You have Juliana and me there with you. You are going to rock this. I told you that you were a diva too." I can't help but laugh at Ember calling me a diva. But, her encouragement gives me strength. When we arrive at the hall, there are people everywhere. It is a lot more people than there were at the other mate balls I had been to."I am going to find Shawn and let him know we are here. Then, I will meet you at the bar. Grab me a white wine, please.""Yes, ma'am," I tell her as she heads in the opposite direction of the bar. A few people are standing at the bar, so I wait my turn."What can I get you?""I'll have a Ladera Verde Sauvignon Blanc and a Long Island Ice tea, please." He gives me a strange look before turning to fix my drinks. I guess the look was because Juliana and I have completely different tastes when it comes to drinks."Here you go." He says as he sets the drinks down in front of me."Someone is thirsty tonight." I hear a man say behind me, but I already recognize the voice. I turn to find Travis standing behind me. I smile at him,"One is my
Alexander, I had gone on a run with the other Alpha's this morning, and it was later than I usually run. Everyone told me that I should go and spend time with the others, but I prefer to be alone when I run. But, my brother being the pain he, can be pushed, so I went. We had run for about forty-five minutes when I could smell water, so I assumed we were coming up on a lake or a stream. When we finally broke from the trees, I saw a beautiful lake. I went to get a drink, but everyone had the same thought as me, so I bolted to the other side, so we were not on top of each other. When I approached the other side, a scent hit me from nowhere. It smelled of vanilla and honey. I looked around but saw no one."What are you doing over there?" My brother Travis asks through our mindlink."I thought I smelled something.""Is it dangerous?" He asked as he started to come around the lake."No, I don
I am watching him, but when he gets closer, his scent grabs me. I mean that too. I felt like something was pulling me to him. My feet were moving, and I met him."Mine," We both growled at the same time. If it was not such an intense moment, I might laugh. But instead, I reached up, placing my hands on his chest as he went to my waist. He pulled me tight against his body and put his head in my neck. I could feel him taking deep breaths, breathing me in. I took this moment to take in his scent, too. He smelled of pine and heather. I take a deep breath to bask in his scent. It is manly but gentle at the same time. It feels like everyone in the room has disappeared but us two. I feel him lift his head, and I do the same, but a growl leaves him as he looks to Travis. What does he think my relationship with Travis is? I look to see that Travis is still looking at him and smiling like he finds his behavior funny."What is your name?" I say, trying t
Alexader Why would our mate already want to talk in private with someone else? Is she hiding something from us? "Calm down. They are women and best friends. Of course, they are going to talk in private about you." Travis says, laughing at my situation. "How do you know Ivy anyway, and how long have you known her?" I ask cause I am genuinely interested. "I met her in the diner right after we got to town. She is a waitress there. She was almost like someone I had known my whole life, bu
I know I need to speak and tell him, but I am unsure where to start. I don't even realize how much time has passed as I try to think of where to start. That is until he speaks up."If you don't mind me asking, what did you want to talk about exactly. You know you can tell me anything. We will get through it together. That is what mates do." I know he is right, but there are still things that I can't tell him."I was not born in this pack." I figure that is the best way to start."What pack were you born in?" He asks, but I need to keep on track."If you don't mind, I am going to tell you, but I have never told anyone but Juliana my story before, so it is hard for me.""Ok, I understand. I will only walk and listen." He tells me, so I continue."So I was born in another pack, but my pack and family were attacked when I was young. I was only eight. The smell of smoke and howls awoke me. When I got to
Alexander,I head for the packhouse as fast as I can go. I know I told her an hour, but if we can leave sooner, that would be better. I wish my mate had not gone through something so traumatic as a child, but I am sure that what she has experienced has played a part in who she is today. I will do my best to help her find out who she is and where she came from, although I might already have a suspicion. I think it is best I wait and see what we can find out. I make it to the packhouse and up to my room. I mindlink Travis to come to my room now. He must not have been far cause he is tapping on the door. I open it and let him inside. I look down the hall but see no one else, so I shut the door."We need to get our stuff and get ready to leave. I told Ivy that I would be back to get her in an hour, but I would like to be faster than that.""Well, I already have my stuff ready, but I take it you will explain it more to me on the way."&
I watch as Alex questions the rogue that attacked me, and then I watch as he snaps his neck. He shows no hesitation in his decision. That is until he looks at me. I see the look of shame, but I don't want him to regret it. They all three were willing to kill without even questioning why. I don't wait for him to second guess his choice more. I walk up and wrap my hands around his neck, thankful that he is ok. He wraps his arms around my waist and pulls me to him."I think we need to get going. Where is your stuff?" He asks as I pull away.""It is over by the back of the building. I only got one bag ready and changed my clothes before we left the house.""Is there anything else you need?""No, I got everything important. Juliana can look through the other stuff if she wants." I turn to look at her, but she looks to Shawn."I don't know how long we are going to be able to stick around here. If Chris knows th
Alexander I was not expecting that question, and I am not sure I want to answer it. But I also know that trust is easy to break but hard to regain once broken."I never had a girlfriend, but I have had partners." I really hope she knows what I mean when I say it that way, and I don't have to elaborate."I see," She doesn't say anything else. She keeps staring out the window. I try to think of a question quickly to change the subject."What is your favorite color?" I know it is probably a stupid question, but it was the first one that popped up in my head."Green.""I like green, but black and pink are so cute together," Travis says, catching us both off guard, but we all laugh. My phone started to ring, and it connected to the truck, so I answered."Hello?" I say unsure who is calling."You want to explain why you, your brother, and my pack member have left." Its Chris and I
