I am finally off and almost home. My feet are killing me. We got slammed at lunchtime and could barely keep up with everyone. When I finally reach my door, I am so happy that I almost didn't notice the paper stuck to it. I pull it off and on the front is the Alpha seal. Ugh, please don't be what I think this is. I am not that lucky. Every unmated pack member must be at the mating ball tomorrow night, no exceptions. Why me? I say as I enter my house and plop down on the couch. Then my phone starts ringing. I pull it out of my pocket and see that it is the diner. I answer, praying they don't need me to return for anything.
"Hello." "Ivy, We are going to close the diner tomorrow. Everyone will be too excited about the ball. Two of the girls that work the afternoon, and you will all have to be there, so I am going to shut down tomorrow." "Yes, sir," I tell him, then he hangs up. So I will lose money and have to go to a ball that will not benefit me at all. I think to myself as I lay back on the couch and feel my eyes start to shut. A small nap does sound good. The dream starts back in my room and follows along just like before. When me and my brother are running into the trees, he is flung from my hand. This time I see the wolf, he looks back at me, and there is something strange about his eyes. They are purple. I have never seen a wolf with purple eyes. I am running in my dream, and when I hear a howl behind me, a banging wakes me from my dream. I hurry up off the couch and go to the door. My hair is a mess, and I have not had the time even to whip the sleep from my eyes when I open the door. "Are you really sleeping this early in the day?" It is my best friend, but if looks could kill, she would be my dead best friend. "I was trying to, but some crazy person beating on my door woke me up," I tell her as I turn and make my way back through the house to the kitchen. I need something to drink and wake up. I look at the clock, and it's seven-thirty already. I don't know how I slept that long. It only felt like a few minutes. "Well, if I did not come to help you get ready for tomorrow, who else would?" Juliana asks as we both walk into the kitchen. "I don't know why I have to go. They don't need me there. They need all the young and unmated there is a difference." I tell her, fixing me a glass of water. "Well, it just so happens that there will be several older wolves there looking for their mates. You are only twenty-two. Stop acting like you are eighty already." "Where exactly did several older wolves come from? Who all is going to be at this ball?" I ask cause I didn't hear much after several older wolves. "Turns out that several of the packs around us have all come together to look for mates. They are hosting the first joined Mate ball here. Some have already arrived, and more suppose to come in tomorrow before the ball." "So I am not the only old person without a mate, huh," I say, laughing, but really I don't want to go. I need to leave this place and travel. Find out what happened to my parents and my brother. "You are a Debby downer is what you are. How about you go and have a good time either way. I will be there to keep you company." "Wait, why will you be there? You already have a mate, and I don't see Shawn liking you hanging out at a mating ball." Juliana found her mate on her eighteenth birthday. She and Shawn had been close and even dated. They say they knew they were mates before they came of age. I agree because they are perfect for each other. "Shawn has to attend because he is the beta, and there are several Alpha's or Alphas to be that are attending. Chris said he felt better if he was there. The gamma Nick and his mate Nikki will be there too." "Why would Alpha Chris have it here or agree if he didn't trust the others?" I ask her. "It is not that he doesn't trust them. Shawn says it's because when you have multiple Alphas together, it can be problematic." That makes sense since Alphas are dominant. "Now, can we go look at what you have to wear?" Juliana says as she makes her way out the kitchen and to my room. I sit on my bed with my head in my hands. Why does it have to be this complicated? I don't wear dresses. I have maybe three in total, and I probably wore them to the parties when I was younger. I can't even remember the last time I wore one. "It's a good thing I know you so well," Juliana says as she goes back out of the room. I throw myself back on the bed and take a deep breath. I can do this, it is just a ball, and I won't find my mate. I can continue with my plans when it's over. "Ok, try this one on?" I look over to see her carrying in several dresses. "Where the hell did those come from?" I ask her. "I told you I know you too well. So I had Shawn drop them off for me." She says, sticking her tongue out at me. She holds a dress-up that I can tell is too short by looking. "I am not wearing that. My ass will be showing." "Yeah, I forget that you are taller than me, so kinda short on me is a peep show for you." She says, laughing at my luck. The next dress is black and long. It looks too long for Juliana. She is only five foot four, and I am five foot six. It doesn't seem like much, but that few inches are the difference in high waters or perfect. It has a strap just below the breast and in the center is a diamond accent. It is classic but sexy at the same time. Not that I want to look sexy, but the dress is gorgeous. I slip it on, and it fits my body perfectly. I didn't notice the slit on it when she was holding it. It goes almost to the waist but on one side. "You have to wear that one, and I have the perfect shoes." "I can't wear heels. I will break my ankle or my neck." I tell her cause I can't do the heels. "They are not heels, I promise. I can bring them over tomorrow, or you could come to my house and get ready with me. You can do my hair." She tells me, giving me those puppy eyes. "Fine, I will be there at three. The party starts at five, right?" "Yes, so you can't be late. I will take the dress back with me tonight, so all you have to do is bring yourself." "I think I can manage," I tell her as we head back down to the door. "If you don't, I will send Chris after you." She says, giving me that shit-eating grin she has. I roll my eyes at her as I shut the door behind her. When she is gone, I head back to the kitchen to grab something to eat. My stomach starts to growl before I can even make it to the fridge. I pull out the stuff to make a sandwich. I need to go to bed early. I still want to get up for my run in the morning. I also need to shower. I smell like the grease from the diner.I wake the following day, and the sun is already beaming through my window. I blink a few times and roll over to grab my phone. I almost jump out of bed when I see it is already eleven. I still have time for a run, but not as long as I would have if I had got up on time. I slip on my clothes and head downstairs. I grab a glass of juice, and when I drink it, I think about the man from the diner yesterday. He must be one of the unmated Alphas. I know he isn't my mate, but something about him made him easy to talk to. I shy away from most higher-ranking wolves. I have never been afraid I only do it to stay unnoticed. "I like him," Ember says in the back of my mind."Yes, he was nice."I head to the door to grab my shoes. I need to get going if I plan to get back, shower, and clean up before I have to head to Juliana's house. I run a little further than yesterday before I strip my clothes off and put them in my bag. I let Ember take co
When we arrive at the hall, there are people everywhere. It is a lot more people than there were at the other mate balls I had been to."I am going to find Shawn and let him know we are here. Then, I will meet you at the bar. Grab me a white wine, please.""Yes, ma'am," I tell her as she heads in the opposite direction of the bar. A few people are standing at the bar, so I wait my turn."What can I get you?""I'll have a Ladera Verde Sauvignon Blanc and a Long Island Ice tea, please." He gives me a strange look before turning to fix my drinks. I guess the look was because Juliana and I have completely different tastes when it comes to drinks."Here you go." He says as he sets the drinks down in front of me."Someone is thirsty tonight." I hear a man say behind me, but I already recognize the voice. I turn to find Travis standing behind me. I smile at him,"One is my
Alexander, I had gone on a run with the other Alpha's this morning, and it was later than I usually run. Everyone told me that I should go and spend time with the others, but I prefer to be alone when I run. But, my brother being the pain he, can be pushed, so I went. We had run for about forty-five minutes when I could smell water, so I assumed we were coming up on a lake or a stream. When we finally broke from the trees, I saw a beautiful lake. I went to get a drink, but everyone had the same thought as me, so I bolted to the other side, so we were not on top of each other. When I approached the other side, a scent hit me from nowhere. It smelled of vanilla and honey. I looked around but saw no one."What are you doing over there?" My brother Travis asks through our mindlink."I thought I smelled something.""Is it dangerous?" He asked as he started to come around the lake."No, I don
I am watching him, but when he gets closer, his scent grabs me. I mean that too. I felt like something was pulling me to him. My feet were moving, and I met him."Mine," We both growled at the same time. If it was not such an intense moment, I might laugh. But instead, I reached up, placing my hands on his chest as he went to my waist. He pulled me tight against his body and put his head in my neck. I could feel him taking deep breaths, breathing me in. I took this moment to take in his scent, too. He smelled of pine and heather. I take a deep breath to bask in his scent. It is manly but gentle at the same time. It feels like everyone in the room has disappeared but us two. I feel him lift his head, and I do the same, but a growl leaves him as he looks to Travis. What does he think my relationship with Travis is? I look to see that Travis is still looking at him and smiling like he finds his behavior funny."What is your name?" I say, trying t
Alexader Why would our mate already want to talk in private with someone else? Is she hiding something from us? "Calm down. They are women and best friends. Of course, they are going to talk in private about you." Travis says, laughing at my situation. "How do you know Ivy anyway, and how long have you known her?" I ask cause I am genuinely interested. "I met her in the diner right after we got to town. She is a waitress there. She was almost like someone I had known my whole life, bu
I know I need to speak and tell him, but I am unsure where to start. I don't even realize how much time has passed as I try to think of where to start. That is until he speaks up."If you don't mind me asking, what did you want to talk about exactly. You know you can tell me anything. We will get through it together. That is what mates do." I know he is right, but there are still things that I can't tell him."I was not born in this pack." I figure that is the best way to start."What pack were you born in?" He asks, but I need to keep on track."If you don't mind, I am going to tell you, but I have never told anyone but Juliana my story before, so it is hard for me.""Ok, I understand. I will only walk and listen." He tells me, so I continue."So I was born in another pack, but my pack and family were attacked when I was young. I was only eight. The smell of smoke and howls awoke me. When I got to
Alexander,I head for the packhouse as fast as I can go. I know I told her an hour, but if we can leave sooner, that would be better. I wish my mate had not gone through something so traumatic as a child, but I am sure that what she has experienced has played a part in who she is today. I will do my best to help her find out who she is and where she came from, although I might already have a suspicion. I think it is best I wait and see what we can find out. I make it to the packhouse and up to my room. I mindlink Travis to come to my room now. He must not have been far cause he is tapping on the door. I open it and let him inside. I look down the hall but see no one else, so I shut the door."We need to get our stuff and get ready to leave. I told Ivy that I would be back to get her in an hour, but I would like to be faster than that.""Well, I already have my stuff ready, but I take it you will explain it more to me on the way."&
I watch as Alex questions the rogue that attacked me, and then I watch as he snaps his neck. He shows no hesitation in his decision. That is until he looks at me. I see the look of shame, but I don't want him to regret it. They all three were willing to kill without even questioning why. I don't wait for him to second guess his choice more. I walk up and wrap my hands around his neck, thankful that he is ok. He wraps his arms around my waist and pulls me to him."I think we need to get going. Where is your stuff?" He asks as I pull away.""It is over by the back of the building. I only got one bag ready and changed my clothes before we left the house.""Is there anything else you need?""No, I got everything important. Juliana can look through the other stuff if she wants." I turn to look at her, but she looks to Shawn."I don't know how long we are going to be able to stick around here. If Chris knows th
