Emelia’s POV

I was totally confused when my best friend, Alexis, texted me and said that she saw my husband and I at a restaurant.

Because I was at home currently. On the sofa. In a robe with a mask on my face.

And my husband, Victor, was supposed to be at work. At least, that was what he texted me a few hours ago.

Ding!

Alexis: I see you and Victor in the restaurant :P You two are just the sweetest couple!

Me: Um, you might wanna get your eyes checked, bestie. :P I'm at home right now!

I sat my phone down and laid back against the sofa while I let my face mask settle. But my phone kept buzzing anyway.

Ding! Ding!

Alexis: I know what Victor looks like! But if that woman turning the back on me isn't you… there might be some trouble!

Alexis: OMG!! Listen to this NOW!!

Ding!

It was an audio message. That made me sit up on the sofa immediately. I pressed play without hesitation.

"Oh, Victor, I know you still think of me.” The unknown woman's voice chimed in.

“I have always been thinking of you.” Victor's voice came through as clear as day.

"You're so kind, just as you always have been. It's like you're the only person who tries to understand me, and who really does."

"And you say I'm kind?" Victor laughed and it sounded so musical.

The woman giggled. "Because you are! Even though you used to always treat me like a child, it's because you were worried about me. I always felt so safe when I was around you back then—and even still now."

Her voice almost sounded… flirty… the way she said that, too.

“Madam,” another voice came through. It was perhaps the waiter. "If you don’t mind, may I ask how long have you two been married? You two have such good chemistry together!"

“Wow, so you think we're sweet?” The unknown woman sounded like she really enjoyed his question, “our relationship is as always.”

The audio cut out with her loud laugh, before I caught the response from Victor.

Hearing how he spoke to her... It made me feel conflicted.

Our marriage wasn't something that came out of love. We were introduced by his grandfather, and set to wed that same week.

While it was odd living under the same roof with a stranger who was meant to be my husband, it wasn't awful. We spent time getting to know each other and in time, I fell in love with my husband.

Victor had always been so thoughtful. He was a man of few words, but I could feel how much he cared through his actions.

But now...why Victor so...treasured her? Even his laugh was so carefree and happy that I had never heard before.

How long had they known each other? How come I've never heard of them before?

A sense of doubt made my skin crawl.

It took me years to build something intimate with Victor, and he'd never spoken to any other woman the way he was speaking to this one.

I had to know what was going on. Or at least get to the bottom of who this person was.

I clicked on Victor's number out of my Favorite Contact list, and he picked up after the fourth ring.

"Hey, Emelia. Is everything okay?” Victor greeted me in a rushed voice.

I took a deep breath and pretended nothing was wrong. “Hey. Yeah, I just wanted to know when you'd be home for dinner? Are you still at your office?”

“Yeah, I'm busy at a work meeting right now. Now's not a good time.” Victor stated.

Liar.

"I'm sorry." I kept my voice steady and even as I tried to find out more details. "You usually call me when you're going to be late at the office, and I thought you'd be home by now. Is everything okay? Why didn't you call?"

Instead of acknowledging anything I said, or even giving me some type of "call you later," he hung up on me.

Just like that. He hit the end button on his phone and completely ignored everything I had to say.

What the hell was that?!

It wasn't until close to midnight that Victor finally came home."Hey, I'm surprised to see you're awake." Victor hung up his coat and came to sit next to me. Emelia’s POVI stood in disbelief as Victor rushed to Lily's side. It had to have been her—his changed behavior for her matched his changed behavior for the woman from last night! Not only had he lied to me about who he was with the other night, but he completely canceled plans with his grandfather for her. What was really going on between them? Why couldn't he just tell me the truth from the start?"Lily! Is everything okay?" Victor asked, his voice laced with worry. "I got here just as soon as I could.""Everything's fine now that you're here." Lily's smile was fragile. “I was too scared, I thought I wouldn’t see you again…” her voice trembled.“I'm here with you now, and that's all that matters.” Victor held her hand tightly. “Are you alright? Are you sick? What happened?”“Hey, I'm not a kid anymore! You don't need to worry too much.” She turned into laughter."Of course I'm going to worry about you!" Victor smiled then. Emelia’s POV"What? I didn't do anything!" I basically yelled."Emelia! Lily's in the hospital, and you're throwing glass at her? What reason could you have to do that? Why would you try to hurt her?" Victor shouted back. His voice was cold towards me, as he held onto Lily's hand."So you're just going to believe her over your own wife?! Just like that? Like you actually think I'd do something so low as to hurt someone in the hospital?!" I fired back.Instead, Victor ignored my words and drew his attention to Lily and the broken glass. I watched as he carefully collected the pieces and threw them away."Are you hurt anywhere? Did the glass get you?" Victor asked softly, giving her hand a light squeeze."No, no. I'm okay now that you're here." Lily's smile was small. "Please don't leave me alone with her again..."Irritation crawled underneath my skin like a bug just by hearing Victor's change in tone as he spoke to Lily. I had to tune out their conversation because I genuinely thought

And I really am sorry, but Mr. Russo made it perfectly clear that this decision was his—you know I can't refute his word."I knew Victor’s words couldn't be swayed by anyone.Still, I could maybe accept someone else getting the promotion, but not Lily. Especially since she only got the position because of her connections, and not because she was qualified. It also didn't help that she and Victor had secrets between them I knew nothing about…"Are you alright? You look a little unwell." Trevor asked."I’m fine, I just need a moment." I responded. "Do you mind if I go back to my office?""Of course, I know it's a lot to take in." Emelia's POVTime slowed to an agonizing crawl as I felt the muscles in my body freeze. I couldn't even think of anything smart to say. Victor had never mentioned anything in the company belonging to Lily, much less the entity as a whole! There was nothing about the company that implied their connection, which was what confused me even more.Lily noticed my shock and looked at me with a smug smile. "Actually, it's not of your concern. Simply put, Victor is just too good to me. I mean, I understand you're married and everything, but you don't understand him like I do. Or maybe he just doesn't value you that much?"You're not actually serious, are you?" I was almost unable to control my anger. Lily shook her head. "Don’t speak to me in that manner, I'm simply telling the truth. You've known him for all of what? 3 years? Why do you think you know Victor like I do?""Lily!" Victor reprimanded. Emelia's POV"What do you mean I look like you?" I couldn't help but blurt out and ask. When I first saw Lily at the hospital, this entire time, I always thought that she looked like me. Now given how their relationship predated what I had with Victor, it didn't even cross my mind that it was the other way around—me looking like her.My stomach started to churn at the possibilities of her words and our looks. Was there a possibility that I was simply Lily's replacement?Still, I kept my face as natural as I could make it, and tried to hold the vomit that threatened to rise."I mean, look at us! " Lily placed her hands on her hips. "Same long, wavy brown hair—even our natural highlighting matches. Oh! And that beauty mark on the side of your face. There's definitely no copying that!" Emelia's POVI stared at the caller ID in disbelief. How did he always manage to do this? It was like Victor possessed a sixth sense when it came to my every movement. Why couldn't he just leave me alone? I ignored his call and placed my phone on Do Not Disturb before shoving it into my bag. I wasn't going to let him ruin the day I was trying to salvage. Yet, his insistence on wanting to speak with me was an omen of what was to come.Victor had eyes everywhere in the city—unfortunately, it came with the territory of being one of the region's most affluent and resourceful CEOs. Which, for me, meant that it was going to be a matter of sooner rather than later when he'd hear news of my move for Italy. It made me sick to think about what his reaction would be. His actions and persistence over the last few weeks had given off nothing more than sheer desperation. Why was he so anxious about having some kind of relationship with me now? He had a kid on the way and an engagement to the wom

Emelia's POV"Mason, I need you to say something, or I'm going to throw up." I admitted after another few minutes of us sitting in an awkward, and tense silence.Mason went through the motions of opening his mouth and closing it again rapidly. It was like he was trying to get his thoughts together, but couldn't. Pink highlighted his cheeks like he was just as embarrassed as me.After a few more moments of agonizing—at least to me—silence, he finally spoke. "That's actually great news, Emelia. I'm happy for you, really." Then he smiled. He smiled.I released a sigh of relief. The weight of anticipation lifted, and the nausea of waiting for his answer finally subsided."Don't ever leave me in suspense like that!" I managed to laugh; half in bewilderment, half in humor to release the rest of the tension I'd been holding onto. "But, I'm glad you're happy for me, really. I honestly was so scared to tell you…"Mason raised an eyebrow. "What? Really?""Yeah, I mean, you nailed it with the who

Emelia's POVIt was noon by the time I woke up the next day; indicative of the much harsher rays of midday sunlight that lit up every inch of my room. I groaned in retaliation. At that moment, it was like I was a vampire. I hated the sun.Even though I thought some sleep would've refreshed my mind, it just felt like I carried everything over from yesterday. The heaviness of my conversation with Alexis never left my chest or my shoulders. I couldn't even find the mask I wanted to wear to hide my emotions.Today was going to be a hard day.I crawled out of bed and couldn't even find it in myself to actually get dressed for the day. At the bare minimum, I was able to comb out my hair and brush my teeth. As I made my way downstairs and into the kitchen, I stood in front of the refrigerator door until it started to beep from being opened for too long. I stared at the ingredients, unsure as to what I wanted—not just from the food, but also from everything that was going on.It made me think

Because of what's happening with Victor? Why did she invite you to Italy?"I spent the next hour explaining everything that happened. It was then that I realized that I never even told her about what happened with the whole plagiarism scandal. The conversation was heavy and charged. I had to relive the embarrassment of the whole paparazzi ganging up on me, being put on blast on television, and having my whole career scrutinized. Not to mention Lily trying to attack me, her whole pregnancy scare, and now her engagement to Victor.Alexis stared at me for a few minutes as my words and heart finally decided to settle. Different emotions flashed through her eyes, as she tried to make sense of everything I'd dumped onto her. After a few tense minutes, she finally spoke up. Emelia's POVIt was another day of sitting idly by my window and staring at photos of potential properties in Italy; from seaside condos, to lovely villas in the countryside. Over the past few days, I hadn't gotten any closer to making a decision on Lady Ruby's offer. It was on my mind constantly. But I was still caught up in the sentimentality of this place, despite wanting so badly to start fresh. This was a dream offer—a once in a lifetime opportunity. Even though I knew it'd be a stupid decision to turn down something like this, there was something in my heart that was anchoring me to this place. This place that caused me so much pain…I sighed and closed my laptop. My mind was still a muddied mess, especially after my encounter with Victor from a few days ago.Which I hadn't stopped thinking about, unfortunately. For whatever reason, my sleeping consciousness seemed to mirror Victor's hopefulness. But there was one thing I was still caught up on."I wish it was as simple as letti

Victor's POV"I did it for your own good" My mother cried. "You weren't taking things seriously, so I had to put my foot down! You made a promise to take care of Lily through it all—how is this any different, huh?"To take my promise from all those years ago and to weaponize it against my autonomy and free-will almost sent me over the edge.I thought I was numb from all the frustrations and grief of the divorce and losing my child with Emelia… But damn if this betrayal from my mother didn't slice me open again and leave another wound for me to tend later. How could she do this to me? Were parents not supposed to look out in the best interest of their child? Could she not see how selfish she was in only considering Lily's feelings? As those thoughts came to my mind, it hit me then.Everything that was happening to me, I'd done to Emelia. All the betrayal and the hurt I was experiencing, she'd experienced at my hands. That revelation nearly broke me in two.How the hell could I have bee

We never agreed to this!It didn't matter how I felt for her in the past; if I wanted to marry her, I would've asked! As those thoughts materialized in my mind, a lightbulb in my head went off. Victor's POVFor the last three days, I'd banished myself from my home and lived within the confines of my office. It made me grateful that I took the contractor's consideration into renovating a small, bachelor's penthouse in the space above my office when he'd offered it.It seemed like he knew a thing or two about needing to escape one's house from time to time.Over the course of those few days of respite, I hadn't responded to a single message my mother or Lily sent me. A part of me knew it was unfair to treat them like this, but I truly couldn't bring myself to care.My mind and heart were caught up in a storm, and I couldn't see a way to save myself from the damage it was inflicting. There was no making a rational decision when there was only one thing—one person—I could think about. And she wanted nothing to do with me.To prevent myself and my mind from spiraling again, I decided to drown myself in as much work as I could.
