Emelia’s POV

Alexis: Um, bestie! Why's Victor at a restaurant with another woman?

I had to reread the text several times to make sure I had read things correctly. Surely she had to be mistaken, right?

Victor wasn't the type to casually dine with just anyone, much less a random woman.

Ding! Another text came through.

Alexis sent a photo this time, and there was no mistaking Victor's slicked back blonde hair. A massive chandelier hung above him, so I knew the place had to be expensive.

But who was the woman that was with him? In the photo, her back was towards the camera, so there was no seeing her facial features at all. The only thing I could see was that she had long, wavy brown hair—reminiscent of my own.

And why did he look so… at ease? Tender? It was almost as if he was admiring her.

The Victor I knew was always serious and indifferent towards other people. It made him appear cold-hearted to others, even though that wasn't truly the case.

Still, it was so odd seeing him act this way. I almost didn't recognize him.

Ding! It was another text, although this time, it was an audio message. I immediately hit play.

"Oh, Victor," the unknown woman's voice chimed in. "This place is truly extravagant. You didn't need to take me here!"

"Nonsense. It's the least I can do for you." Victor's voice was soft.

Least I can do for you? What's that supposed to mean?

"You're so kind, just as you always have been. It's like you're the only person who tries to understand me, and who really does."

"And you say I'm kind?" Victor laughed and it sounded so musical.

I'd never heard Victor's laugh sound like that—it sounded so carefree and full of happiness.

The woman giggled. "Because you are! Even though you used to always treat me like a child, it's because you were worried about me. I always felt so safe when I was around you back then—and  even still now."

How long have they known each other? Who is this woman? Is she an old friend of his?

"And how are we finding everything?" Another voice came through. I thought it was perhaps the waiter.

"Good, thank you for checking in on us." Victor replied.

"Of course, of course! And if you don’t mind, may I ask how long have you two been married? You two are absolutely sweet to each other!"

“Aww, you really think we're that sweet enough to seem married?” The unknown woman sounded like she really enjoyed his question. “I suppose our relationship can come off that way!”

The audio cut out with the unknown woman laughing loudly before I caught any type of response from Victor.

I called Alexis immediately, but she wouldn't answer her phone. My mind began to wander as I tried to connect the pieces of this new puzzle.

Our marriage wasn't something that came out of love. We were introduced by his grandfather, and set to wed that same week.

While it was odd living under the same roof with a stranger who was meant to be my husband, it wasn't awful. We spent time getting to know each other and in time, I fell in love with my husband.

Victor had always been so thoughtful. He was a man of few words, but I could feel how much he cared through his actions.

And so seeing the photo and hearing how he spoke to her... It made me feel conflicted. A sense of doubt made my skin crawl.

My phone rang at that moment and pulled me out of my thoughts. It was Alexis, so I picked it up.

"Hey! I'm so sorry I wasn't able to record any more of their convo. My boyfriend called, so I didn't get to hear any more of it..."

"It's okay, you did a lot for me with just that photo and that small audio clip." I sighed. "What should I do though?"

There were a few beats of silence before Alexis responded again. "Maybe just call him to make sure everything's okay? I didn't mean to worry you too much, but... It's just weird. Do you think they're just friends?"

I didn't want to immediately assume the worst, so I took a few deep breaths before answering. "I'm sure they are. Maybe just a new work colleague or business partner."

"Were we listening to the same voice message?" Alexis asked in disbelief.

"Yeah… I just… I don't want to immediately jump to conclusions, okay? Maybe it is something harmless. Victor's loyal and honest. He's never given me a reason to doubt him, so I won't right now."

"Well… I'm a call or text message away if you need anything, bestie." Alexis didn't seem to buy my reasoning, but was supportive of me anyway.

"Thank you, I appreciate it."

I hung up the phone and sighed.

It took me years to build something intimate with Victor, and he'd never spoken to any other woman the way he was speaking to this one.

I had to know what was going on. Or at least get to the bottom of who this person was.

I clicked on Victor's number out of my Favorite Contact list, and he picked up after the fourth ring.

"Hey, Emelia. Is everything okay?” Victor greeted me in a rushed voice.

I took a deep breath and pretended nothing was wrong. “Hey. Yeah, I just wanted to know when you'd be home for dinner? Are you still at your office?”

“Yeah, I'm busy at a work meeting right now. Now's not a good time.” Victor stated.

It definitely wasn't the answer I wanted to hear since it was a flat out lie.

"I'm sorry." I kept my voice steady and even as I tried to find out more details. "You usually call me when you're going to be late at the office, and I thought you'd be home by now. Is everything okay? Why didn't you call?"

Instead of acknowledging anything I said, or even giving me some type of "call you later," he hung up on me.

Just like that. He hit the end button on his phone and completely ignored everything I had to say.

What the hell was that?!

What was going on?It was genuinely starting to worry me with how Victor was behaving. Was everything truly okay with him? Was this person actually just a friend?I stayed up all night as my mind ran rampant. I stressed cleaning our closet and organized every article of clothing to try and settle down, but it didn't work. It wasn't until close to midnight that Victor finally came home."Hey, I'm surprised to see you're awake." Victor hung up his coat and came to sit next to me. "Is everything alright?""I should be asking you that question. What happened earlier tonight? I was trying to call you and ask you when you'd be home and you just hung up on me."Victor took out his phone from his pocket and handed it to me. Emelia’s POVI stood in disbelief as Victor rushed to Lily's side. It had to have been her—his changed behavior for her matched his changed behavior for the woman from last night! Not only had he lied to me about who he was with the other night, but he completely canceled plans with his grandfather for her. What was really going on between them? Why couldn't he just tell me the truth from the start? As I got a closer look at Lily, I found that what surprised me the most was the way she looked. Her hair was the same shade of brown as mine; same long, and wavy length; and even the natural highlights were identical. There was also a distinct beauty mark at the corner of her mouth—same as my own.Surely this was a coincidence, right?"Lily! Is everything okay?" Victor asked, his voice laced with worry. "I got here just as soon as I could.""Everything's fine now that you're here." Lily's smile was fragile. “I was too scared, I thought I wouldn’t see you again…” her voice trembled.“I'm h

Emelia’s POV"Who lies about something like that?! You know I didn't do that at all!" I basically yelled."Emelia! Lily's in the hospital, and you're throwing glass at her? What reason could you have to do that? Why would you try to hurt her?" Victor shouted back. His voice was cold towards me, as he held onto Lily's hand."So you're just going to believe her over your own wife?! Just like that? Like you actually think I'd do something so low as to hurt someone in the hospital?!" I fired back.Instead, Victor ignored my words and drew his attention to Lily and the broken glass. I watched as he carefully collected the pieces and threw them away."Are you hurt anywhere? Did the glass get you?" Victor asked softly, giving her hand a light squeeze."No, no. I'm okay now that you're here." Lily's smile was small. "Please don't leave me alone with her again..."Irritation crawled underneath my skin like a bug just by hearing Victor's change in tone as he spoke to Lily. I had to tune out the

Even in my place of work I couldn't escape that name.Lily, Lily, Lily. Why was she everywhere I went?"Why is she being given my position, Trevor? Am I not doing enough?"Trevor sighed. "You know you're one of our best, Emelia. And I really am sorry, but Mr. Russo made it perfectly clear that this decision was his—you know I can't refute his word."I knew Victor’s words couldn't be swayed by anyone.Still, I could maybe accept someone else getting the promotion, but not Lily. Especially since she only got the position because of her connections, and not because she was qualified. It also didn't help that she and Victor had secrets between them I knew nothing about…"Are you alright? You look a little unwell." Trevor asked."I’m fine, I just need a moment." I responded. "Do you mind if I go back to my office?""Of course, I know it's a lot to take in." Emelia's POVTime slowed to an agonizing crawl as I felt the muscles in my body freeze. I couldn't even think of anything smart to say. Victor had never mentioned anything in the company belonging to Lily, much less the entity as a whole! There was nothing about the company that implied their connection, which was what confused me even more.Lily noticed my shock and looked at me with a smug smile. "Actually, it's not of your concern. Simply put, Victor is just too good to me. I mean, I understand you're married and everything, but you don't understand him like I do. Or maybe he just doesn't value you that much?"You're not actually serious, are you?" I was almost unable to control my anger. Lily shook her head. "Don’t speak to me in that manner, I'm simply telling the truth. You've known him for all of what? 3 years? Why do you think you know Victor like I do?""Lily!" Victor reprimanded. "That’s enough.""But…" Lily's expression changed. She pouted her lip with tears welling at

I answered flatly.Victor turned his phone so it would face me. "Look for yourself. None of it should be that important during work hours anyway."Lily: Emelia really isn’t up to the task. Emelia's POV"What do you mean I look like you?" I couldn't help but blurt out and ask. When I first saw Lily at the hospital, this entire time, I always thought that she looked like me. Now given how their relationship predated what I had with Victor, it didn't even cross my mind that it was the other way around—me looking like her.My stomach started to churn at the possibilities of her words and our looks. Was there a possibility that I was simply Lily's replacement?Still, I kept my face as natural as I could make it, and tried to hold the vomit that threatened to rise."I mean, look at us! "Oh, no need to act too humble.""That's not it!" I playfully hit her. "It's just… I don't know. I've never thought about that before. It's one thing to work for another company, but owning one? That requires a little more elbow grease."Honestly, starting my own company hadn't been something that I gave much thought to. Mostly because I was too busy making sure my family and I had food on our table and a roof over our heads… After having been on survival mode for so long, even after I'd married Victor, it didn't occur to me that that was even a possibility.Plus, the thought of being a CEO of anything made me a little wary and uncomfortable. It was a lot of pressure to deal with the inner-workings of making sure a company stayed afloat.I wasn't even sure if I could handle it.Almost as if Alexis had read my mind, she re

"I know you're pregnant, so don't act like you're not!"I hated having my business pried into, especially by Lily of all people. If anyone was going to know about the intimate, important details of my life, it was going to be people that I trusted. People I knew who wouldn't betray my secret or faith in them.Which Victor definitely didn't fall into that category… At least, not anymore.I shook away the thoughts and met Lily's gaze head on. "Even if I was pregnant, you definitely wouldn't be the one I'd tell. It's none of your damn business and it never will be.""So you ARE pregnant?" She took a bold step towards me."Back up if you know what's good for you!" I barked. "What are you asking me? What are you trying to say?"The last fragile flicker of hope I had left in me was extinguished at that moment.FUCK!Why?! Why couldn't he admit his feelings for me? Did they not exist after all this time? Had I truly not held any part of his heart? Had I not made my home in it after all these years? The tightness in my chest grew and suddenly it was getting harder for me to breathe. "Get out…" My voice was strained as I struggled to hold onto my composure."Em… I—" Victor hesitated. His eyes flickered to me and then away while he tried to search for something to say."Get. OUT!" Emelia's POVThe air around us grew cold, as the expression on Victor's face froze. I watched his eyes dart from me to the divorce papers, like he hadn't fully comprehended what I asked of him. Maybe he didn't think I was speaking English."You can't be serious right, Em?" Victor finally broke the tense silence. "Please, let's talk about this and be reasonable. I understand why you're upset, but I've realized the truth now. Doesn't that count for something?"I crossed my arms and narrowed my eyes at him. "Like that's supposed to undo everything you've done?""I'm not trying to undo anything, Em. I admit to my mistakes. I lied to you about my relationship with Lily, and I prioritized her over you." Victor unraveled my crossed arms and took my hand in his. "It made me doubt you when I shouldn't have."I took my hand back from him. It was like he was regretting bringing up the truth at all.I knew what happened then—she found his weakness. She was weaponizing his guilt over her health, and had it dangled above his head like a knife. In her mind, she thought that the truth didn't matter because she knew he was duty-bound to all the promises he made to her in their past. And honestly, I figured that was what was going to be the case.Despite how many times he'd said "sorry" to me, all of his energy would go into prioritizing Lily anyway. He'd only vehemently come to my defense once after my accident, but even then, he folded against Lily's and Bernadette's constant pressuring. If anything, I was even more confused. Something had to have happened to their relationship."You want to know why I'm angry with you?" Victor asked Lily. He seemed unmoved by her dramatics today. "Tell me, Lily—what happened to you while I was on my trip at Blasdell with Emelia?""I fell down the stairs and broke my leg! You know that.
