I was totally confused when my best friend, Alexis, texted me and said that she saw my husband and I at a restaurant.
Because I was at home currently. On the sofa. In a robe with a mask on my face. And my husband, Victor, was supposed to be at work. At least, that was what he texted me a few hours ago.
Ding!
Alexis: I see you and Victor in the restaurant :P You two are just the sweetest couple!
Me: Um, you might wanna get your eyes checked, bestie. :P I'm at home right now!
I sat my phone down and laid back against the sofa while I let my face mask settle. But my phone kept buzzing anyway.
Ding! Ding!
Alexis: I know what Victor looks like! But if that woman turning the back on me isn't you… there might be some trouble!
Alexis: OMG!! Listen to this NOW!!
Ding!
It was an audio message. That made me sit up on the sofa immediately. I pressed play without hesitation.
"Oh, Victor, I know you still think of me.” The unknown woman's voice chimed in.
“I have always been thinking of you.” Victor's voice came through as clear as day.
"You're so kind, just as you always have been. It's like you're the only person who tries to understand me, and who really does."
"And you say I'm kind?" Victor laughed and it sounded so musical.
The woman giggled. "Because you are! Even though you used to always treat me like a child, it's because you were worried about me. I always felt so safe when I was around you back then—and even still now."
Her voice almost sounded… flirty… the way she said that, too.
“Madam,” another voice came through. It was perhaps the waiter. "If you don’t mind, may I ask how long have you two been married? You two have such good chemistry together!"
“Wow, so you think we're sweet?” The unknown woman sounded like she really enjoyed his question, “our relationship is as always.”
The audio cut out with her loud laugh, before I caught the response from Victor.
Hearing how he spoke to her... It made me feel conflicted.
Our marriage wasn't something that came out of love. We were introduced by his grandfather, and set to wed that same week.
While it was odd living under the same roof with a stranger who was meant to be my husband, it wasn't awful. We spent time getting to know each other and in time, I fell in love with my husband.
Victor had always been so thoughtful. He was a man of few words, but I could feel how much he cared through his actions.
But now...why Victor so...treasured her? Even his laugh was so carefree and happy that I had never heard before.
How long had they known each other? How come I've never heard of them before?
A sense of doubt made my skin crawl.
It took me years to build something intimate with Victor, and he'd never spoken to any other woman the way he was speaking to this one.
I had to know what was going on. Or at least get to the bottom of who this person was.
I clicked on Victor's number out of my Favorite Contact list, and he picked up after the fourth ring.
"Hey, Emelia. Is everything okay?” Victor greeted me in a rushed voice.
I took a deep breath and pretended nothing was wrong. “Hey. Yeah, I just wanted to know when you'd be home for dinner? Are you still at your office?”
“Yeah, I'm busy at a work meeting right now. Now's not a good time.” Victor stated.
Liar.
"I'm sorry." I kept my voice steady and even as I tried to find out more details. "You usually call me when you're going to be late at the office, and I thought you'd be home by now. Is everything okay? Why didn't you call?"
Instead of acknowledging anything I said, or even giving me some type of "call you later," he hung up on me.
Just like that. He hit the end button on his phone and completely ignored everything I had to say.
What the hell was that?!
Emelia's POV"I'll call you back, bestie!" I said in a hushed and rushed tone.Alexis laughed and wiggled her eyebrows. "Yes you will!"I hung up and got up from my desk as Mason closed the distance and pulled me in for a hug. The shock of seeing him here made my limbs go numb that I couldn't even return his embrace. He then pulled away while his hands stayed at the sides of my arms. The way he looked at me was like he couldn't believe I was real.We stayed like that for a little bit; looking at each other in bewilderment at the other's physical existence, but also with happiness. Neither of us could believe we'd be standing right in front of each other so soon."It's really good to see you, Emelia." His soft voice finally broke the silence."Ditto." I smiled. "But what are you doing here? I thought you were busy back in Silver Springs?""I *was* busy." He smirked. "Everything's good now. Plus, I couldn't bear to be so close yet so far from you.""You're so dramatic!" I laughed."Belie
Emelia's POVThe Collective held its grand opening this morning. To see all of my hard work and dedication culminate into this amazing event and physical storefront was nothing short of a dream come true.My heart raced as I cut that red ribbon, signaling that the doors were open to the public. So many people poured in that even a line had to form outside to keep the place from overcrowding. Hearing everyone's praises and excitement fueled my happiness and sense of fulfillment.*I* worked towards this.*I* made this happen.*I* did it!After years of all the blood, sweat, and tears that I've shed in my fight for a better future, it was finally here. For once, I felt pride in myself.Kathleen's models were absolutely beautiful, and each of them wore my creations like works of art. Alexis's assistant, Mikayla, was working her magic with capturing photos and videos of everything to its littlest detail.I wore a wide smile on my face so often to the point that my cheeks were hurting. This
Lily's POVI didn't see Victor for the rest of the night. Maybe he left. Maybe he was in the guest room. Not that it mattered anyway.Because I was still alone in this bedroom of ours. I was isolated in our own marriage.I wish I knew where it all went wrong. When he stopped caring for me; when he stopped thinking of the world of me.What I really wanted to know was where all of this was coming from.It made my heart hurt to think about him questioning our relationship. Even more so now that he thought staying together for Violet's sake wasn't good enough.I gripped the blanket tighter around me as I allowed the tears to finally fall free.I couldn't afford to lose him... Especially because I needed his money to take care of my parents. And of course I loved him. I really did. Even with how he was treating me, I couldn't love anyone else but him.But what was I supposed to do?How was I supposed to make him see that I was the good and worthy wife he'd always wanted?I wondered if maybe
Lily's POV"Their service is bad; their management is horrible; and everything about the store isn't suited for anyone's business. Much less ours." I scoffed. "Truly, I don't see how they're supposed to compete with what you built!" The anger from earlier today that I tried to suppress and get rid of was beginning to come back. Heat simmered at the point below my chest, while tension coiled around my shoulders. Thinking about that sorry excuse for a business was such a waste of my time! But it made me happy that Victor cared enough to ask about my day. Now, I could plant the seeds of revenge in his mind. There was no way I was going to let them get away with disrespecting and humiliating me the way that they did! "What did they do to you?" Victor asked. I sighed pitifully. "All I wanted to do was to go and visit the store, and possibly browse their clothing. They blocked me from going in, and then told me that they weren't opening until tomorrow. I said, "Okay, I'll come back the
Victor's POVI sat in my car in the hotel's parking garage for God knows how long. Didn't start it, didn't want to. All I could try to do was try and make sense of the feelings that coursed through my mind.Confusion.Happiness.Anger.Regret.I could feel every single emotion all at once. It was like a hurricane was going through my mind, throwing everything everywhere, and leaving nothing but destruction and chaos in its wake.Yet, all I could do was sit here. And do nothing but stare straight ahead at the car that was parked in front of me. Hell, I couldn't even look away when the person got into it and looked at me like I had gone crazy. And maybe I had.For two years, I prayed to some God to bring Emelia home to me. I wanted nothing more than to bask in the glow and warmth of her presence. Never did I imagine that when I was told that a rival company was coming to Greenport, that the face behind it all was going to be her.My heart swelled with pride to see how far she'd come in h
Emelia's POVI used the opening to bolt to the other room as I slammed the door behind me. With trembling hands, I took a deep breath and held the phone against my ear."H-hey, I'm still here." I tried to reassure Mason in a barely even voice."You okay? You sound a little out of breath.""I'm fine, I promise. I'll call you back some other time, okay? There's just something I need to take care of.""Business?""You know it.""Always the busy bee, aren't you?" Mason chuckled. "Alright, we'll catch up again soon. Take care, Em.""You, too."Once I hung up the phone, I braced myself to face Victor once more. While my heart hammered on, I tried to wipe the sweat from my palms on my pajama pants.I just wanted this to be over with! When I came out of the room, Victor was still standing right where I left him.His eyes locked right onto me as his shoulders tensed. "So? Care to tell me who that was? He seemed really worried about you.""That's none of your business." I replied coldly."It's l
