Shock hijacked my nerves as I sat there in disbelief. Victor had never lied to me before, and now all of a sudden he was?
He'd never hung up on me like this before either! What was going on?
It was genuinely starting to worry me with how Victor was behaving. Was everything truly okay with him?
I stayed up all night as my mind ran rampant. I stressed cleaning our closet and organized every article of clothing to try and settle down, but it didn't work.
It wasn't until close to midnight that Victor finally came home.
"Hey, I'm surprised to see you're awake." Victor hung up his coat and came to sit next to me. "Is everything alright?"
"I should be asking you that question. What happened earlier tonight? I was trying to call you and ask you when you'd be home and you just hung up on me."
Victor took out his phone from his pocket and handed it to me. "I didn't realize that my phone was on low battery and it died."
I thought about holding the power button to see if he was lying, but I decided against it. Him giving me his phone was a sign of trust, and even though I had my doubts now, I didn't want to give into them.
"Well, that was rude of it to die on you." I laughed, trying to shake away the nervousness I felt. "I was trying to talk to you."
"I'm sorry, I hope I didn't worry you too much."
"No, not at all." I hesitated before adding, "But Alexis did text me earlier this evening. She said she thought she saw you at some restaurant with another woman."
"Oh? I didn’t notice her.” Victor paused for a second. “She could've said hi. Although, I was with a new colleague tonight and we were discussing work for the company."
I wanted to accept that as the truth, but it was really hard given the audio messages I heard.
Why was he keeping things from me now? What made the woman so important that he couldn't be upfront with me?
Victor tilted his head to the side. "Emelia? Are you okay? You don't seem well."
I had to snap my focus back to the present as I gave him a half-smile. "Yeah, I'm fine. I just cleaned our closet out before you got home, and forgot all about dinner."
Victor smiled. "Well, follow me downstairs then. I can make you something to eat."
I absentmindedly followed Victor to our kitchen and sat on the stool next to the island. My mind still wandered even as I watched him cook.
I wanted to press the matter further, but would I come off as jealous or possessive? Would I come off as crazy?
I just wanted him to tell me the truth. I wanted this to be water under the bridge.
I sighed. Pushing Victor wasn't going to make things better, so maybe I just had to trust that he was telling me the truth.
The rest of the late night went relatively well, and my feelings had eased up enough to let me get some sleep.
When morning came, I woke up to the sight of Victor's handsome features sleeping next to me. Sleep made his sharp features smooth; I couldn't get enough of his beautiful looks.
I traced his jaws lightly, and brushed a strand of hair away from his face.
He woke up to my gentle touch, and kissed me on the nose. "Good morning."
"Good morning," I smiled back.
"I hope you slept well; we have a busy day ahead of us."
"Is that so?"
"Mhm, grandpa Antonio invited us over for another dinner party. You know how much he loves inviting us to those."
Grandpa Antonio was the reason why Victor and I got married. He was also the only one in the family who was truly kind to me. I always loved spending time with him.
"I can't wait to see him." I smiled. "Let's hope work goes by quickly."
Before we knew it, the evening had already come and we were getting ready for grandpa Antonio's dinner party. My heart raced with excitement since it'd been a while since I'd seen him last.
As Victor drove down the relatively calm road, his phone went off.
I looked at the caller ID—Lily.
Who was that supposed to be? How come I'd never heard of this person before?
Victor picked it up.
He’d suddenly gotten quiet. I looked over at Victor, his face only got more grave and tense.
Then without warning, he hit the brakes hard and turned the car around in a complete 180. After that, he switched lanes and started speeding in the opposite direction.
The sudden turn made me think the car was going to flip over. I grabbed the handrail in shock. What was Victor doing?
"Victor, slow down!" I called out. "What's wrong? What happened?"
"We need to get to the hospital now." Victor tried to keep his voice even despite the slight tremble in them.
I noticed how his knuckles had gone white from gripping the steering wheel so hard, and how there was a sense of urgency about him.
"But what about grandpa? Shouldn't we at least—"
"I'll call him once I know she's okay!"
The only person in this world, aside from me, that was important to Victor was his grandfather. To see him so wound up over this Lily woman was new and shocking.
She has to be really important to Victor for him to cancel dinner with grandpa…
It suddenly made me think of the unknown woman who had dinner with Victor last night. Was there a possibility that she and Lily were somehow connected?
When we arrived at the hospital, Victor rushed down the halls to Lily’s room. He hardly spared a knock and went inside, leaving me behind as the door slammed in my face.
Wow, he’s really worried about this Lily woman…
I took a deep breath and grasped the doorknob.
Mentally, I was preparing myself to see something far more grim given Victor’s erratic and alarmed behavior.
Instead, when I opened the door, what I saw was unexpected. She was looking fine.
The only thing out of place was her appearance, which was slightly disheveled as if she’d just woken up.
However, what stuck out to me the most was her long, wave brown hair; and the beauty mark she had at the corner of her mouth.
I completely understood why Alexis mistaken me and Lily in the restaurant.
Was it a coincidence she looked somewhat similar to me?
Before I could figure anything out, Lily finally reacted to us coming into her room.
Except, Lily’s eyes only widened at the sight of Victor. Her body shook as tears freely fell from her face. "Oh, Victor! I’m so glad you’re finally here! I knew you'd be here to protect me, just like you always did when we were younger. Always my little knight, right?"
I recognized her voice—it was the woman Victor had dinner with yesterday!
Emelia’s POVI stood in disbelief as Victor rushed to Lily's side. It had to have been her—his changed behavior for her matched his changed behavior for the woman from last night! Not only had he lied to me about who he was with the other night, but he completely canceled plans with his grandfather for her. What was really going on between them? Why couldn't he just tell me the truth from the start?"Lily! Is everything okay?" Victor asked, his voice laced with worry. "I got here just as soon as I could.""Everything's fine now that you're here." Lily's smile was fragile. “I was too scared, I thought I wouldn’t see you again…” her voice trembled.“I'm here with you now, and that's all that matters.” Victor held her hand tightly. “Are you alright? Are you sick? What happened?”“Hey, I'm not a kid anymore! You don't need to worry too much.” She turned into laughter."Of course I'm going to worry about you!" Victor smiled then. "I'm always going to worry when it comes to you. I swear, y
Emelia’s POV"What? I didn't do anything!" I basically yelled."Emelia! Lily's in the hospital, and you're throwing glass at her? What reason could you have to do that? Why would you try to hurt her?" Victor shouted back. His voice was cold towards me, as he held onto Lily's hand."So you're just going to believe her over your own wife?! Just like that? Like you actually think I'd do something so low as to hurt someone in the hospital?!" I fired back.Instead, Victor ignored my words and drew his attention to Lily and the broken glass. I watched as he carefully collected the pieces and threw them away."Are you hurt anywhere? Did the glass get you?" Victor asked softly, giving her hand a light squeeze."No, no. I'm okay now that you're here." Lily's smile was small. "Please don't leave me alone with her again..."Irritation crawled underneath my skin like a bug just by hearing Victor's change in tone as he spoke to Lily. I had to tune out their conversation because I genuinely thought
Emelia’s POVLily, Lily, Lily. Why was she everywhere I went?"Why is she being given my position, Trevor? Am I not doing enough?"Trevor sighed. "You know you're one of our best, Emelia. And I really am sorry, but Mr. Russo made it perfectly clear that this decision was his—you know I can't refute his word."I knew Victor’s words couldn't be swayed by anyone.Still, I could maybe accept someone else getting the promotion, but not Lily. Especially since she only got the position because of her connections, and not because she was qualified. It also didn't help that she and Victor had secrets between them I knew nothing about…"Are you alright? You look a little unwell." Trevor asked."I’m fine, I just need a moment." I responded. "Do you mind if I go back to my office?""Of course, I know it's a lot to take in." Trevor looked at me with concern. "But don't be too upset, okay? Stuff like this happens all the time. After all, she’s the CEO’s friend. It's normal for some people to have
Emelia's POVTime slowed to an agonizing crawl as I felt the muscles in my body freeze. I couldn't even think of anything smart to say. Victor had never mentioned anything in the company belonging to Lily, much less the entity as a whole! There was nothing about the company that implied their connection, which was what confused me even more.Lily noticed my shock and looked at me with a smug smile. "Actually, it's not of your concern. Simply put, Victor is just too good to me. I mean, I understand you're married and everything, but you don't understand him like I do. Or maybe he just doesn't value you that much?"You're not actually serious, are you?" I was almost unable to control my anger. Lily shook her head. "Don’t speak to me in that manner, I'm simply telling the truth. You've known him for all of what? 3 years? Why do you think you know Victor like I do?""Lily!" Victor reprimanded. "That’s enough.""But…" Lily's expression changed. She pouted her lip with tears welling at t
Emelia's POVThe love and warmth of our shared moment vanished like a water droplet against scorching pavement. Irritation crawled up my spine at the sight of her texts.Especially when she was still questioning what was supposed to be Victor's decision on the matter of the shares."Lily seems to still be concerned about my decision about giving you the company shares. But don't worry, I won't be going back on my word. She means well, though."Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! Then four more text messages came in."It seems like she has more to complain about." I answered flatly.Victor turned his phone so it would face me. "Look for yourself. None of it should be that important during work hours anyway."Lily: Emelia really isn’t up to the task. She’s only fit to be an employee. Don’t let marriage cloud your judgment :(Lily: How can I not worry about you? In the company, I not only have to look out for you, but also manage my own work. It's exhausting!Lily: All this paperwork is giving me a h
Emelia's POV"What do you mean I look like you?" I couldn't help but blurt out and ask. When I first saw Lily at the hospital, this entire time, I always thought that she looked like me. Now given how their relationship predated what I had with Victor, it didn't even cross my mind that it was the other way around—me looking like her.My stomach started to churn at the possibilities of her words and our looks. Was there a possibility that I was simply Lily's replacement?Still, I kept my face as natural as I could make it, and tried to hold the vomit that threatened to rise."I mean, look at us! " Lily placed her hands on her hips. "Same long, wavy brown hair—even our natural highlighting matches. Oh! And that beauty mark on the side of your face. There's definitely no copying that!" "You know, I couldn't help but notice the same thing when I first met you…" I agreed. "Isn't that a little bit weird, Victor?""Is it?" Victor tilted his head. "Brown hair seems a little common, no?""That
Emelia's POVWhat in the actual hell? What did Lily mean by that?I was completely blindsided. Even with these doubts, I didn't think the extent of their "friendship" ran like this. Victor had reassured me time and time again. So had he been lying this entire time?I could just barely hold back my tears, but I clasped my hand over my mouth so I could.I remained hidden in the shadows as I diverted all of my attention to their conversation.Despite not being the type to generally eavesdrop, I knew in this instance, I needed to. I needed to hear just exactly what was going on between them, even though I wasn't sure if I could take any more heartache for the night. But it was time I found out the extent of their relationship—the truth. Even though I knew it'd hurt me."Don't start, Lily. I'm not the one to blame here!" I heard Victor say."Why are you so afraid to face the truth?" Lily almost screamed. "The truth that your marriage was a mistake, just like mine!”"You don't get to talk
Emelia's POVFor a while, there was nothing but black surrounding me. If this was the afterlife, this was depressing. However, it seemed like the spirits had a different plan for me. Beep… Beep… Beep…I heard the steady beeping of a machine. I felt my consciousness being pulled by the reality of being alive. As I slowly opened my eyes, a sharp pain ran pierced my head and ran down the side of my body.It made me wince and groan slightly."Emmy, please…" A familiar, warm voice of a woman pleaded. "I need you to wake up. Please…"The fluorescent lights above were blinding, but I opened my eyes nonetheless. I looked around the immaculately clean beige, plain room I was in."W-where am I?" I managed to say, although my voice was hoarse."Emelia!" The woman's voice cheered. "You're finally awake! It's about time! I couldn't imagine life without you, bestie!"I shook my head slightly and looked up to a pair of smiling blue eyes and golden blonde hair. It was Alexis."Y-you're here." I smil
Emelia's POVI stared at the caller ID in disbelief. How did he always manage to do this? It was like Victor possessed a sixth sense when it came to my every movement. Why couldn't he just leave me alone? I ignored his call and placed my phone on Do Not Disturb before shoving it into my bag. I wasn't going to let him ruin the day I was trying to salvage. Yet, his insistence on wanting to speak with me was an omen of what was to come.Victor had eyes everywhere in the city—unfortunately, it came with the territory of being one of the region's most affluent and resourceful CEOs. Which, for me, meant that it was going to be a matter of sooner rather than later when he'd hear news of my move for Italy. It made me sick to think about what his reaction would be. His actions and persistence over the last few weeks had given off nothing more than sheer desperation. Why was he so anxious about having some kind of relationship with me now? He had a kid on the way and an engagement to the wom
Emelia's POV"Mason, I need you to say something, or I'm going to throw up." I admitted after another few minutes of us sitting in an awkward, and tense silence.Mason went through the motions of opening his mouth and closing it again rapidly. It was like he was trying to get his thoughts together, but couldn't. Pink highlighted his cheeks like he was just as embarrassed as me.After a few more moments of agonizing—at least to me—silence, he finally spoke. "That's actually great news, Emelia. I'm happy for you, really." Then he smiled. He smiled.I released a sigh of relief. The weight of anticipation lifted, and the nausea of waiting for his answer finally subsided."Don't ever leave me in suspense like that!" I managed to laugh; half in bewilderment, half in humor to release the rest of the tension I'd been holding onto. "But, I'm glad you're happy for me, really. I honestly was so scared to tell you…"Mason raised an eyebrow. "What? Really?""Yeah, I mean, you nailed it with the who
Emelia's POVIt was noon by the time I woke up the next day; indicative of the much harsher rays of midday sunlight that lit up every inch of my room. I groaned in retaliation. At that moment, it was like I was a vampire. I hated the sun.Even though I thought some sleep would've refreshed my mind, it just felt like I carried everything over from yesterday. The heaviness of my conversation with Alexis never left my chest or my shoulders. I couldn't even find the mask I wanted to wear to hide my emotions.Today was going to be a hard day.I crawled out of bed and couldn't even find it in myself to actually get dressed for the day. At the bare minimum, I was able to comb out my hair and brush my teeth. As I made my way downstairs and into the kitchen, I stood in front of the refrigerator door until it started to beep from being opened for too long. I stared at the ingredients, unsure as to what I wanted—not just from the food, but also from everything that was going on.It made me think
Emelia's POV"Italy?" Alexis stared at me blankly for a few seconds. Then, the interrogation started. "Wait, wait—you're going overseas? When? Soon? Tomorrow? Because of what's happening with Victor? Why did she invite you to Italy?"I spent the next hour explaining everything that happened. It was then that I realized that I never even told her about what happened with the whole plagiarism scandal. The conversation was heavy and charged. I had to relive the embarrassment of the whole paparazzi ganging up on me, being put on blast on television, and having my whole career scrutinized. Not to mention Lily trying to attack me, her whole pregnancy scare, and now her engagement to Victor.Alexis stared at me for a few minutes as my words and heart finally decided to settle. Different emotions flashed through her eyes, as she tried to make sense of everything I'd dumped onto her. After a few tense minutes, she finally spoke up. "So, all of this is to say that you're the one leaving this tim
Emelia's POVIt was another day of sitting idly by my window and staring at photos of potential properties in Italy; from seaside condos, to lovely villas in the countryside. Over the past few days, I hadn't gotten any closer to making a decision on Lady Ruby's offer. It was on my mind constantly. But I was still caught up in the sentimentality of this place, despite wanting so badly to start fresh. This was a dream offer—a once in a lifetime opportunity. Even though I knew it'd be a stupid decision to turn down something like this, there was something in my heart that was anchoring me to this place. This place that caused me so much pain…I sighed and closed my laptop. My mind was still a muddied mess, especially after my encounter with Victor from a few days ago.Which I hadn't stopped thinking about, unfortunately. For whatever reason, my sleeping consciousness seemed to mirror Victor's hopefulness. But there was one thing I was still caught up on."I wish it was as simple as letti
Victor's POV"I did it for your own good" My mother cried. "You weren't taking things seriously, so I had to put my foot down! You made a promise to take care of Lily through it all—how is this any different, huh?"To take my promise from all those years ago and to weaponize it against my autonomy and free-will almost sent me over the edge.I thought I was numb from all the frustrations and grief of the divorce and losing my child with Emelia… But damn if this betrayal from my mother didn't slice me open again and leave another wound for me to tend later. How could she do this to me? Were parents not supposed to look out in the best interest of their child? Could she not see how selfish she was in only considering Lily's feelings? As those thoughts came to my mind, it hit me then.Everything that was happening to me, I'd done to Emelia. All the betrayal and the hurt I was experiencing, she'd experienced at my hands. That revelation nearly broke me in two.How the hell could I have bee
Victor's POVLily started the rumor. She was the one that LIED to the world about me being her fiancé.She betrayed me.Why? Why was she doing this? We never agreed to this!It didn't matter how I felt for her in the past; if I wanted to marry her, I would've asked! As those thoughts materialized in my mind, a lightbulb in my head went off. It was like I'd reached a realization of something that should've been so obvious.Lily wasn't the woman I wanted to marry. As much as I cared for her, and would do anything for her, she wasn't the one who I made my promises to.The thought of promising my life to someone else… Something about it made my heart ache, like someone was squeezing it with all their might. What was this feeling? Why was it so overwhelming?I shook the thoughts away, knowing that if I dwelled too long, I would've suffocated under its weight."Victor!" Rosalie's voice finally cut through the deep fog that was still clouding my mind."I'm sorry, I'm sorry…" I took a sharp in
Victor's POV"What the hell is this?!" My voice boomed within the workspace. The speculating whispers and chitter chatter halted, and everything and everyone froze. "Is this some kind of joke?!"My gaze burned into the eyes of those who dared to meet mine. No one had an answer; many of them looked away under the weight of my fury. They were all quiet, and perhaps they truly had no idea what this was supposed to be. But I didn't care. I wasn't looking to spare anyone with how much of a horrible mood I'd been in for the past few days—hell, more like a little over a month at this point. My heart was torn to pieces with the loss of my child and the divorce.I didn't want to remarry!I didn't want to claim a child I had no recollection of even conceiving! No one was taking my thoughts and feelings into consideration, which pissed me off even more! I'm considered one of the wealthiest CEOs in this region. So why in the hell was I being coerced into doing things I didn't want to do?No one i
Victor's POVFor the last three days, I'd banished myself from my home and lived within the confines of my office. It made me grateful that I took the contractor's consideration into renovating a small, bachelor's penthouse in the space above my office when he'd offered it.It seemed like he knew a thing or two about needing to escape one's house from time to time.Over the course of those few days of respite, I hadn't responded to a single message my mother or Lily sent me. A part of me knew it was unfair to treat them like this, but I truly couldn't bring myself to care.My mind and heart were caught up in a storm, and I couldn't see a way to save myself from the damage it was inflicting. There was no making a rational decision when there was only one thing—one person—I could think about. And she wanted nothing to do with me.To prevent myself and my mind from spiraling again, I decided to drown myself in as much work as I could. Especially since there were still matters of the plagi
