Chapter 1: Present

A year after…

Bella's POV

I'm still not ready to be a Senior High student but I have no choice.

"Maaga s'yang umalis kanina," she answered without even looking at my direction.

After the incident a year ago, Nana recovered from her wounds. Though it limited her from doing certain tasks, she was still able to do some of the household chores. My mother advised her to rest more but she refused it.

"Heto, kunin mo. Pinabibigay ng mommy mo." She handed me a one thousand peso bill.

Indistinct chatters echoed around the hallway. Students formed in groups, excitedly talking and greeting each other after months of summer vacation.

Patuloy lamang ako sa paglalakad. Unlike them, I have no friend to greet or to discuss how my summer vacation  was so I did not bother stalling around.

Its branches were widely spread at its top forming an almost perfect circular shape. Its enomous trunk was a proof of its old age, and its leaves slowly dances with the soothing air.

At its roots, five benches were placed neatly in a circular pattern. I took a seat on one of them while I silently read my book under the shade of the old acasia tree.

"Busy much."

I turned around and to my surprise I saw Vee . Her short hair bounced as she joined me on my seat.

Vee was the only person closest to a friend that I have. She was my sister's best friend and after the incident, we began to occasionally talk with each other.

There was a minute of silence before one of us decided to break it.

"So...how are things going?" she asked out of the blue.

"It has been great," tipid kong sagot.

"You know…you suck at lying," natatawang saad niya.

Muling namayani ang nakakabinging katahimikan.

"You know...Stephanie's the very first person here in the campus who made me feel not alone. I would really be honored if I'll return that favor to her sister." I can see her sweet smile from my peripheral view.

"No, you don't have to. She wouldn't have done that to you if she expected something in return."

"Yes, I know but I think if I would return the favor it will lessen your burden."

"No, but I'm glad you think that way."

"Good morning, class. Take your seat," bati ng isang lalaking matangkad at moreno. Despite being in his 30's, Sir Tyrron is still physically fit and good looking, making him look a lot younger than his actual age. A few traces of wrinkles were visible on some parts of his face but they were barely visible.

I saw a group of girls giggling at the sight of our teacher. I can't blame them. Sir Tyrron is one of those people who can easily grab your attention.

Sir Tyrron proceeded with his lessons not minding the seductive stares of few of my classmates, while I just remained silent, lazily waiting for the time to pass by.

Ngunit may napansin ako.

THE morning and afternoon classes passed like any other. A long ringing sound of a bell marked the end of all our classes for today.

I still wasn't able to see Vee the whole day. It was odd because ever since, she has been an academically consistent student and cutting classes is the least thing that I would expect from her.

"Bye, loser!" I was shocked when a bentley car passed by on my left side. Before I knew it, a splashed of water splattered on my green skirt. It wasn't hard to assume that it came from a puddle of water where the bentley's tire just ran over.

Katrina and her friends, who were on the car, drove away laughing at my situation. Katrina also didn't missed the opportunity to raise her middle finger on me before they were finally gone from my sight.

I curled my fist.

I decided to just shrugged my frustration and anger. There wasn't much that I could do.

The beef between me and Katrina traced back when her boyfriend dumped her to court me. I didn't want anything with her perverted ex-boyfriend but she kept insisting that I seduced him so I could get into his pants. Just a thought of it, makes me gag.

"No, wait. What happened to you? You look—stressed." Her clothes were wrinkled and some strands of her hair were sticking out of her head. She seemed like someone who just woken up from a long sleep or joined on some long-distanced running marathon. She looks very different from how she looks just this morning.

"No, it's nothing. I was just running, hoping that I won't get caught by the rain. Getting soaked in the rain is the least thing that I would want." She smiled from ear to ear.

I wanted to ask her where she'd been or why I didn't see her in class the whole day, but I figured that it was none of my business. I don't want her to think that I was too nosy.

Her odd behavior was new to me but I just shrugged it off.

"Opo, marami. Ang saya nga po nila kasama kahit isang araw pa lamang kaming nagkakilala," I lied while forcing a smile.

Bakit may putik?"

"Soon…I will finally get the answer, Ate. "
