Chapter 7

Author: Aurora Wells
Dolly finally believed me.

She looked at me with concern etched into her face. "Eve, you… never mind. It’s good that you’ve woken up. You’ve suffered too much for Julian these past seven years."

I fell silent.

Unrequited love represented one of the most profound and cruel forms of emotional pain.

That pain unbalanced me, and the imbalance drove me to madness. The once-proud Evelyn White had never known failure, except for that catastrophic defeat at eighteen.

I didn’t know what the version of me from eighteen to twenty-five had gone through, but it didn’t take much imagination to guess it hadn’t been good.

I slowly said, "Dolly, help me. I want to return to the White family."

Dolly sighed and shook her head. "That won’t be easy… You haven’t contacted them in five years."

She hesitated, and I caught the flash of pity in her eyes.

I lowered my gaze, my chest aching with a dull, sour heaviness.

This body was grieving.

And why wouldn’t it be? That was my family—my closest family.

My eyes reddened as I whispered, "Dolly, please help me. I want to reach out to my brother first. He always loved me the most..."

Dolly’s expression shifted, darkening slightly. "Eve, it’s not that I don’t want to help you, but… your brother won’t see you."

Before I could respond, a shrill, mocking voice cut through the café.

“Well, if it isn’t Mrs. Moore. What brings you to this shabby little place for coffee?”

The biting tone made me frown.

Dolly was quicker to react, jumping to her feet. "Rossie Dean, I’m warning you, don’t start something!"

The voice belonged to a stylish woman in a floral dress with fiery red hair. Her makeup was immaculate, and she carried several shopping bags in her left hand. Beside her stood two equally trendy young women, their faces mirroring Rossie’s look of disdain as they eyed me up and down.

I stood and gently tugged on Dolly’s arm. "I don’t know her. Let’s just go."

Before Dolly could respond, Rossie cut her off with a mocking sneer.

“Oh, don’t recognize me, huh? Evelyn, you really have a short memory! We go way back, you and I.”

I frowned. “Miss Dean, I’m afraid I don’t know you.”

Rossie let out a cold laugh and turned to her companions. “Did you hear that? She claims she doesn’t know me.”

The woman in a pale yellow dress chimed in, her tone dripping with malice. “Well, who cares? A desperate woman like her, groveling at Julian’s feet, isn’t worth knowing anyway.”

The trio burst into mean-spirited laughter, their eyes full of ridicule.

I kept my expression neutral and tugged on Dolly’s sleeve. “Let’s go. They’re not worth it.”

But Dolly had reached her boiling point.

She exploded, her voice sharp as she fired back.

“Who are you calling desperate? No one’s as shameless as you, Rossie Dean! You knew Julian was married and still threw yourself at him. And you, Lilian Frost, your family's been buttering Julian up at every turn, desperate for those Moore Group deals. The lot of you have no dignity!”

Dolly’s verbal takedown left the three women stunned into silence.

Rossie was the first to recover. She lunged forward, hands reaching for Dolly’s hair.

But Dolly wasn’t one to back down—her fighting spirit was legendary, and I’d witnessed it firsthand growing up.

Without hesitation, she grabbed the unfinished cup of coffee from the table and splashed it directly onto Rossie.

Rossie screamed, clutching her face as coffee dripped down her designer dress.

Furious, Lilian grabbed a shopping bag and swung it at Dolly.

Dolly didn’t notice, but I did. Instinctively, I stepped forward, blocking the bag with my arm. A sharp pain shot through me as it struck.

Dolly’s temper flared even hotter. “You lowlife trio dared to hit Eve? Are you all tired of living?”

“Stop this at once!” a commanding voice rang out.

Before I could react, a hand grabbed my arm and wrenched it back with brutal force.

There was a sickening crack, and pain exploded through me, forcing me to the ground. I crouched there, clutching my arm as the agony overwhelmed me.

My head buzzed, the pain dulling my senses as I vaguely heard Dolly’s furious voice. “Julian, are you out of your mind? Why are you grabbing Eve like that?”

A jolt of shock hit me—why was Julian here?

I tried to stand, but the dizziness overwhelmed me, and I collapsed toward the ground.

Before I could hit the floor, someone caught me, their grip firm yet gentle.

I barely had a chance to register what was happening when a deep, soothing voice said, “Stop it. She’s hurt.”

...

When I came to, the glare of the overhead fluorescent light was blinding.

“You’re awake?” Julian’s voice came from beside me.

Struggling to sit up, I winced as pain shot through my left arm. It felt limp and useless, throbbing with every movement.

Julian sat nearby, his sharp features set in a dark scowl as he watched me intently.

He noticed my slow, careful movements and let out a faint smirk, his lips curving slightly. “Finally awake. I thought you’d keep faking it a while longer.”

I froze for a second, then shot him a cold glare. “You’re right. I should’ve stayed unconscious longer—might’ve been able to milk some compensation out of it.”

Julian was visibly stunned, clearly not expecting my response.

The disgust in his eyes deepened as he leaned forward, his tone impatient. “Evelyn, go apologize. They’re threatening to call the police on you.”

I scoffed, the corners of my mouth curling into a bitter smile. “And why exactly should I apologize? I didn’t hit anyone. Besides, they’re the ones who started it.”

I might have lost my memory, but I hadn’t lost my wits.

Even if I didn’t remember Rossie, Dolly’s reaction made it abundantly clear those three women weren’t innocent victims.

"Besides, Rossie was the one who started it with her provocations, and Dolly only fought back. Rossie was the first to lose control and resort to violence. So why should I apologize?"

Clutching my injured shoulder, my expression was icy and unapproachable.

The pain in my shoulder was unbearable—it was probably dislocated—and yet my so-called “husband” stood before me, demanding I apologize to the instigator?

How absurd.

A hollow laugh escaped my lips.

Julian’s face darkened at my reaction, his anger flaring. He stood abruptly and grabbed my arm.

“Evelyn, enough! I’ve had it with you! Get back home right now and stop embarrassing me out here!”

The searing pain from his grip on my injured arm tore a scream from my throat.

Still half-convinced I was faking it, Julian scowled. “Go ahead, keep pretending. You’re perfectly fine. We’re leaving!”

The excruciating pain coursing through me made my scalp tingle as though it would explode.

At that moment, I wanted nothing more than to drag this despicable man down with me.

Anyone would go mad from the pain of being yanked by a dislocated arm.

“Let her go! Can’t you see she’s hurt?”

A figure strode forward quickly, grasping Julian’s wrist with a firm, unyielding grip.

Caught off guard, Julian released me instinctively under the pressure of the stranger’s hold.

Freed from his grasp, the pain overwhelmed me, and I broke down into uncontrollable sobs.

It was only then that Julian noticed something was wrong—my arm hung at an odd, unnatural angle.

The man who intervened steadied me gently, his voice calm and soothing. “Don’t worry, I’ll take you to the hospital.”

Clinging to him as if he were my lifeline, I gripped his arm tightly, desperate for relief.

A refined and gentle face appeared in front of me.

Between sobs that left me gasping for air, I cried, “My… my arm is broken! My arm is broken! I need my brother! I want my brother!”

Days of bottled-up emotions burst free under the stranger’s kindness, overwhelming me like a dam breaking.

Without thinking, I buried myself in his arms, just as I had done as a child when I ran to my brother, Nicholas White, after being wronged.

“Brother, I want my brother. Someone is bullying me! They’re all bullying me! Every single one of them—they’re shameless and cruel!”

Julian stood frozen, his expression unreadable.

Even the stranger seemed momentarily stunned by my emotional outburst.

I let out a wailing cry, louder and more unrestrained than ever.

I missed my parents. I missed the brother who had always protected me, the one who would stand by me no matter what trouble I caused.

No matter how bad things got, he would always fight for me, shielding me from anyone who dared to hurt me.

But now, I felt utterly broken.

Because I had lost them.

In the cursed void of these seven years, I had somehow lost the people I loved most in this world.

An hour later, I found myself in the orthopedic emergency room at Riverdale University Hospital. A kind-looking elderly doctor with snow-white hair carefully examined my arm. He nodded toward the refined man standing beside him. “It’s a dislocated shoulder.” The man responded with a calm hum. “Dr. Reed, your expertise in orthopedic realignment is renowned. Could you help her out?” Michael Reed gave him a meaningful glance, chuckling. “You rascal, always using my goodwill to score favors.” Turning his attention to me, the doctor gently rotated my arm and asked, “Young lady, did this troublemaker hurt you?” I shot a quick glance at the man before shaking my head vigorously. “No, no! It’s not like that. I… I don’t even know him.” Michael chuckled knowingly. “Don’t know him? Then why was this troublemaker so worried about you?” Heat rose to my cheeks as I recalled how I had clung to the man’s suit jacket earlier, bawling my eyes out like a child. Feeling embarrassed, I droppe

My previously calm demeanor shattered instantly, leaving me in a foul mood. I stubbornly refused to say a word. Julian’s patience frayed further, and he reached out to grab me. “Don’t touch me!” I shouted, my voice echoing across the waiting area and drawing the attention of every patient and nurse nearby. Countless eyes turned toward us, eager to witness the drama unfolding. Julian’s expression darkened even more. He stepped closer, lowering his voice to a menacing growl. “Come with me. Whatever it is, we’ll talk about it at home.” I took a step back, raising my voice again. “No!” His gaze turned icy, his tone sharpened. “Evelyn, have you grown bold? Do you want me to just leave you here and stop caring altogether?” His voice, now raised, carried a heavy, unmistakable threat. Turning my head away, I said coldly, “That would suit me just fine. I don’t need you to care.” Julian reached out again, but his hand froze mid-air as his eyes landed on the bandage slung acro

Julian and Chloe froze, their expressions stunned. Julian was the first to react. “What are you doing?” Chloe looked equally baffled. I casually waved the photo I’d just taken. “Evidence. Proof of your infidelity, Mr. Moore. Feel free to continue flaunting your affection in front of me, but don’t blame me if I record it all and use it against you.” Realizing the impropriety of his actions, Julian hastily pulled his hand away from Chloe’s. Chloe’s face flushed with embarrassment as she stammered, “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean anything by it. I was just trying to calm Julian down. It wasn’t intentional.” Her voice quivered, and her teary-eyed expression was as pitiful as ever, clearly designed to draw sympathy. Feeling disgusted, I turned away. That performance was truly nauseating. And, as expected, Julian fell for it. He immediately placed a steadying hand on Chloe’s shoulder and turned to me, bristling with anger. “Evelyn, apologize!” I let out a cold laugh. “And what

Just as I was about to hail a cab, a sleek black car slowly pulled up in front of me. “Eve?” The car window rolled down smoothly. I looked up, still feeling lightheaded. In that instant, a familiar, refined face came into view. I froze. “Mr. Wynn?” Miles stepped out of the car and opened the passenger door, gently helping me inside. It took me a moment to gather my thoughts. “Mr. Wynn, why are you still here?” He started the engine, his tone calm and measured. “I figured you might still be at the hospital, so I circled the area. And here you are.” Reaching for a napkin, he handed it to me with a casual ease. “Were you sick just now?” I accepted it, dabbing at my mouth, and replied quietly, “Yes, a little dizzy. It’s probably a lingering effect of the concussion.” His brows knit slightly, the look in his eyes behind the glasses turning sharp and serious. That was when I realized my back was damp with cold sweat. As he drove, his voice was calm but comforting. “It

I mumbled an awkward thank you, avoiding his gaze. Miles rested his hand lightly on the steering wheel. His pale wrist, adorned with an Audemars Piguet watch, looked like a piece of art—refined, understated, and undoubtedly expensive. Suddenly, he glanced over at me. Flustered, I quickly averted my eyes, caught staring, and lowered my head. “Um... Woo… No, I mean… Miles, where am I going now?” Confusion clouded my voice. “I forgot where Dolly lives.” Miles sighed softly. “Have you really forgotten everything?” I nodded sheepishly. “The doctor said I’ve got intermittent amnesia. They’re not sure when—or if—I’ll remember everything.” He frowned, concern etched into his features. “That serious? Does Julian know?” I laughed bitterly and shook my head. “He doesn’t believe me. He thinks I’m lying.” Miles seemed visibly annoyed by my response, his gaze lingering on me longer than I expected. After a moment, he shifted gears. “Do you have WhatsApp?” Caught off guard, I blin

Miles had already stepped out of the car. Standing just outside, he gave me a soft smile. “Eve, we’re here.”I climbed out and froze, stunned by the view before me. This place was remote yet breathtaking. We were perched on a hillside, overlooking a vast expanse of deep blue coastline. The setting sun spilled brilliant streaks of color across the horizon, painting the sky and sea in hues of gold and crimson. Behind us, a lush forest of vibrant green stretched endlessly, framing the scenery like a dream. Nestled within the trees was a vintage estate, its architecture timeless and elegant. Ordinarily, such an isolated house might have exuded an eerie vibe, but this one didn’t. Instead, it brimmed with life, its stone walls draped in blooming roses—lush, extravagant, and impossibly beautiful. Clusters of red, blush pink, soft yellow, and creamy white roses climbed in vibrant waves, creating what seemed like an ocean of blossoms. I gasped, excitement bubbling up as I recogniz

His question left me at a loss for words, the explanation I had prepared lodged uncomfortably in my throat. I finally mumbled, "But my reputation isn’t good. Staying here might bring trouble to you." I avoided his gaze, staring fixedly at my toes, the weight of his silent scrutiny pressing down on me. After a long pause, a soft sigh escaped him. “Don’t overthink it. Come inside. I’ll make sure you’re settled.” He turned and walked ahead. I hesitated for a moment before trailing after him. ... The house was quiet, the staff moving about with practiced efficiency. There was an inexplicable sense of comfort here. Unlike Julian’s cold, lifeless villa, this place brimmed with traces of lived-in warmth. The slightly peeling wooden bookshelves, the western-style fireplace with its edges scorched from use, and the well-worn but impeccably maintained leather sofa all spoke of a home steeped in history and care. I sat on the sofa, awkwardly waiting as Miles went upstairs to cha

Sitting on the edge of the bed, I felt as though I were trapped in a surreal dream. The room wasn’t excessively opulent, yet it radiated an extraordinary sense of warmth and comfort. A housekeeper placed a neatly folded set of clothes beside me, smiling politely. “Miss Evelyn, these are pajamas Mr. Wynn selected for you. If they don’t fit, please let us know.”I glanced at the soft pink sleepwear and quickly nodded. “Please thank Mr. Wynn for me.”The housekeeper showed me how to use the bedside phone and the bathroom controls before leaving the room. Just as I began to settle in, my phone buzzed. It was Dolly. “Why did it take you so long to answer? I was terrified something happened! Did Julian hurt you? And how’s your arm?” she demanded, her voice rising with worry. I quickly recounted my trip to the hospital. On the other end, Dolly went silent for a moment, then burst out, “Wait! Dr. Reed? That Michael Reed? The legendary orthopedic doctor?! And who’s the ridiculously handso

The hostess paused for a second, then quickly adjusted with a smile. "Of course, Miss White. Miss Jones, please follow me. “Yes, I’m stupid! But what else can I do?” I said helplessly.Dolly went quiet for a moment on the other end of the line. “Forget it. That Pierse isn’t too bad. I’ll help this time. But Evelyn, don’t get involved with the Moore family again.”I nodded eagerly. “I know. I won’t touch anything else.”After getting my promise, Dolly asked, “By the way, tomorrow’s the second brand show for Elmwood. They contacted me asking for your number. They said they couldn’t reach you.”“What brand show?” I asked.Dolly smacked her head on the other end. “Ah, I forgot you lost your memory. You used to sponsor this niche brand. Now they’re doing better and better, and you’ve been their show sponsor every year. I remember you paid the sponsorship fees annually.”I had no memory of that, but Dolly sounded quite certain.A thought struck me. “Did I sponsor them under Moore Group’s name?”Dolly thought for a moment. “Probably. Back then you wanted to build some name recognition for Julian, so you sponsored

He cleared his throat. "But Miss White, are you sure you want to help Pierse? He’s still under eighteen, and custody and guardianship legally belong to the Moore family. This kind of thing rarely ends well for the person trying to help."I gave an awkward smile. "I know. My plan is to pick a school, then have him go back and talk it over with his family. “He’s in a rebellious phase right now. I really can’t just leave him to fend for himself. If I do, he’s going to spiral."The more I spoke, the heavier my heart felt.Ian looked at me with a complicated expression. "You really are a kind person, Miss White. If Julian failed to keep you, that’s entirely his loss."I managed a tight smile.Skipping the small talk, we quickly settled on a school thanks to Ian’s help.It was an international school that was established for twenty years. It had an excellent reputation, and after graduation, students could transition smoothly into overseas programs with direct guidance for studying abroad.

With things spiraling the way they had, both of us were a little dazed.Once Pierse snapped out of it, he grinned and grabbed my hand. "Eve, from now on, I’m sticking with you."Sticking with me?I let out a helpless smile. "You’re not even eighteen. Your mom and brother are still around. It’s really not my place to take care of you."Pierse waved it off like it meant nothing. "They don’t care about me anyway. Whether I live or die, it’s all the same to them. So, I might as well stay with you."He seemed to have found a new sense of purpose, full of enthusiasm. "Eve, I can work. I’ll find a job and earn my own money. You don’t need to give me anything."I sighed. "Don’t talk nonsense. Just remember, you’re still a minor. Your mom or your brother can come take you away anytime."He didn’t seem the least bit concerned.Seeing that I couldn’t reason with him, I decided to take him for a meal first.A teenage boy really had big appetite.I brought Pierse to a restaurant and watched him dev

I pretended not to care. "He was just a kid who didn’t know any better. Now that he understands, I don’t mind treating him like my brother again."Julian looked moved. He took a step forward. "Eve, you’ve changed. You’re more understanding now, more mature."I took a step back in disgust. "Mr. Moore, if you have something to say, say it. Don’t come any closer."The light in Julian’s eyes dimmed slightly at my words. "Eve, I just wanted to explain what happened with Chloe and the baby...""Stop!" I covered my ears. "I don’t want to hear it."I glared at him, unable to hold back anymore. "Mr. Moore, don’t assume I’m so generous that I’ll accept any kind of garbage or that I care to hear about your filthy mess in detail, alright?"I’ve told you so many times. I don’t love you anymore. You mean nothing to me now. I want a divorce! I don’t want to know anything about you and Chloe!"Julian looked stunned by my outburst. He stared at me strangely. "Eve, you really don’t love me anymore? If y

I stared at the teacher, shocked. "He already has a strike on his record? Since when?" The teacher glanced at Julian. "You didn’t know? That’s strange. Your family should’ve been notified. His mother came in last time…" Julian’s expression darkened. "No. My mother doesn’t know. It must’ve been..." Realization hit me like a slap. Pierse must’ve paid someone else to show up and pose as his guardian to cover for him. That little troublemaker. I didn’t care that Julian was standing right there.I turned to the teacher. "Let me talk to him again. In the meantime, could you please speak with the student’s parents? Let them know we’re willing to cover all the medical expenses and any other losses." Before the teacher could answer, Julian suddenly cut in, frowning. "Who said you get to make that decision for him?" I froze, taken aback. After a beat, I bit back my frustration. "Are you saying I’m overstepping, Mr. Moore?" Julian stared at me. "You’re his sister-in-law. It’s n

After a long while, Pierse finally stopped crying. I quickly grabbed a tissue to wipe his face, then cleaned up his wounds.I disinfected them, reapplied the ointment, and pressed on fresh band-aids.Once he calmed down, he looked a little embarrassed. "Eve, what should I do about all this?" I thought for a moment. "There’s really no option besides apologizing and paying for the damages.”He turned his head away. "I’m not apologizing." I stayed calm, just like I always did with him. "Alright. Then I’ll apologize for you. Hopefully the other party is understanding. If not, we might have to involve your mom and your brother. And if that happens, I won’t be able to protect you." His brows drew together. "I don’t want them to know." I sighed. "Then our only option is to talk to your teacher and ask for leniency. I’ll do my best." I stood to go find the teacher. Behind me, Pierse asked in a low voice, "Does it really have to be an apology?" I nodded. "It might help cool thin

I walked over to the corner of the office and found the first aid kit. Then I sat down beside Pierse and quietly began disinfecting the cuts on his face before placing a few band-aids over the worst of them. He didn’t flinch or fight me off.He just sat there and let me patch him up. Seeing that he was still simmering with anger, I poured him a glass of water. "Here. Drink this," I said gently. "And tell me what happened." It took a while before he finally spoke. It turned out that he and the other kid he fought with had never been on good terms. Pierse was good-looking, constantly skipping class to play basketball, and had that kind of bad-boy energy that made half the girls in school swoon. The other boy had a crush on a popular girl from another class, only to find out, after a lot of effort, that she actually liked Pierse. And so, that was how the fight broke out.I sighed. "So, you got into a fight over a girl you don’t even like, just because her admirer couldn’t h

To be honest, I wasn’t surprised Pierse had gotten into a fight. What did surprise me was that, at his age, neither his mother, Abby, nor Julian seemed to be doing anything about it. There wasn’t time to dwell on that. I arrived at the school and was quickly escorted by security to the disciplinary office. As soon as the door opened, I saw him. Pierse sat in the back of the room, his face bruised and dark with frustration. "Pierse?" I called softly. He looked up, shocked to see me, and stood up abruptly. "Eve? What are you doing here?" Then immediately groaned, "I forgot to turn off my phone." I rushed over and examined his injuries. There were two gashes on his cheek, and the corner of his mouth was badly swollen and bruised. Feeling my heart aching, I pulled out a tissue to dab at the dried blood. "What happened? Your face is a mess." Pierse winced and pulled away. "I’m really fine. You shouldn’t have come. Go home, I’m okay." Before I could say more, his home
