Chapter 9

Author: Aurora Wells
My previously calm demeanor shattered instantly, leaving me in a foul mood.

I stubbornly refused to say a word.

Julian’s patience frayed further, and he reached out to grab me.

“Don’t touch me!” I shouted, my voice echoing across the waiting area and drawing the attention of every patient and nurse nearby.

Countless eyes turned toward us, eager to witness the drama unfolding.

Julian’s expression darkened even more. He stepped closer, lowering his voice to a menacing growl. “Come with me. Whatever it is, we’ll talk about it at home.”

I took a step back, raising my voice again. “No!”

His gaze turned icy, his tone sharpened. “Evelyn, have you grown bold? Do you want me to just leave you here and stop caring altogether?”

His voice, now raised, carried a heavy, unmistakable threat.

Turning my head away, I said coldly, “That would suit me just fine. I don’t need you to care.”

Julian reached out again, but his hand froze mid-air as his eyes landed on the bandage slung acro

Julian and Chloe froze, their expressions stunned. Julian was the first to react. “What are you doing?” Chloe looked equally baffled. I casually waved the photo I’d just taken. “Evidence. Proof of your infidelity, Mr. Moore. Feel free to continue flaunting your affection in front of me, but don’t blame me if I record it all and use it against you.” Realizing the impropriety of his actions, Julian hastily pulled his hand away from Chloe’s. Chloe’s face flushed with embarrassment as she stammered, “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean anything by it. I was just trying to calm Julian down. It wasn’t intentional.” Her voice quivered, and her teary-eyed expression was as pitiful as ever, clearly designed to draw sympathy. Feeling disgusted, I turned away. That performance was truly nauseating. And, as expected, Julian fell for it. He immediately placed a steadying hand on Chloe’s shoulder and turned to me, bristling with anger. “Evelyn, apologize!” I let out a cold laugh. “And what

Just as I was about to hail a cab, a sleek black car slowly pulled up in front of me. “Eve?” The car window rolled down smoothly. I looked up, still feeling lightheaded. In that instant, a familiar, refined face came into view. I froze. “Mr. Wynn?” Miles stepped out of the car and opened the passenger door, gently helping me inside. It took me a moment to gather my thoughts. “Mr. Wynn, why are you still here?” He started the engine, his tone calm and measured. “I figured you might still be at the hospital, so I circled the area. And here you are.” Reaching for a napkin, he handed it to me with a casual ease. “Were you sick just now?” I accepted it, dabbing at my mouth, and replied quietly, “Yes, a little dizzy. It’s probably a lingering effect of the concussion.” His brows knit slightly, the look in his eyes behind the glasses turning sharp and serious. That was when I realized my back was damp with cold sweat. As he drove, his voice was calm but comforting. “It

I mumbled an awkward thank you, avoiding his gaze. Miles rested his hand lightly on the steering wheel. His pale wrist, adorned with an Audemars Piguet watch, looked like a piece of art—refined, understated, and undoubtedly expensive. Suddenly, he glanced over at me. Flustered, I quickly averted my eyes, caught staring, and lowered my head. “Um... Woo… No, I mean… Miles, where am I going now?” Confusion clouded my voice. “I forgot where Dolly lives.” Miles sighed softly. “Have you really forgotten everything?” I nodded sheepishly. “The doctor said I’ve got intermittent amnesia. They’re not sure when—or if—I’ll remember everything.” He frowned, concern etched into his features. “That serious? Does Julian know?” I laughed bitterly and shook my head. “He doesn’t believe me. He thinks I’m lying.” Miles seemed visibly annoyed by my response, his gaze lingering on me longer than I expected. After a moment, he shifted gears. “Do you have WhatsApp?” Caught off guard, I blin

Miles had already stepped out of the car. Standing just outside, he gave me a soft smile. “Eve, we’re here.”I climbed out and froze, stunned by the view before me. This place was remote yet breathtaking. We were perched on a hillside, overlooking a vast expanse of deep blue coastline. The setting sun spilled brilliant streaks of color across the horizon, painting the sky and sea in hues of gold and crimson. Behind us, a lush forest of vibrant green stretched endlessly, framing the scenery like a dream. Nestled within the trees was a vintage estate, its architecture timeless and elegant. Ordinarily, such an isolated house might have exuded an eerie vibe, but this one didn’t. Instead, it brimmed with life, its stone walls draped in blooming roses—lush, extravagant, and impossibly beautiful. Clusters of red, blush pink, soft yellow, and creamy white roses climbed in vibrant waves, creating what seemed like an ocean of blossoms. I gasped, excitement bubbling up as I recogniz

His question left me at a loss for words, the explanation I had prepared lodged uncomfortably in my throat. I finally mumbled, "But my reputation isn’t good. Staying here might bring trouble to you." I avoided his gaze, staring fixedly at my toes, the weight of his silent scrutiny pressing down on me. After a long pause, a soft sigh escaped him. “Don’t overthink it. Come inside. I’ll make sure you’re settled.” He turned and walked ahead. I hesitated for a moment before trailing after him. ... The house was quiet, the staff moving about with practiced efficiency. There was an inexplicable sense of comfort here. Unlike Julian’s cold, lifeless villa, this place brimmed with traces of lived-in warmth. The slightly peeling wooden bookshelves, the western-style fireplace with its edges scorched from use, and the well-worn but impeccably maintained leather sofa all spoke of a home steeped in history and care. I sat on the sofa, awkwardly waiting as Miles went upstairs to cha

Sitting on the edge of the bed, I felt as though I were trapped in a surreal dream. The room wasn’t excessively opulent, yet it radiated an extraordinary sense of warmth and comfort. A housekeeper placed a neatly folded set of clothes beside me, smiling politely. “Miss Evelyn, these are pajamas Mr. Wynn selected for you. If they don’t fit, please let us know.”I glanced at the soft pink sleepwear and quickly nodded. “Please thank Mr. Wynn for me.”The housekeeper showed me how to use the bedside phone and the bathroom controls before leaving the room. Just as I began to settle in, my phone buzzed. It was Dolly. “Why did it take you so long to answer? I was terrified something happened! Did Julian hurt you? And how’s your arm?” she demanded, her voice rising with worry. I quickly recounted my trip to the hospital. On the other end, Dolly went silent for a moment, then burst out, “Wait! Dr. Reed? That Michael Reed? The legendary orthopedic doctor?! And who’s the ridiculously handso

When I brought up my brother, I felt a pang of sadness. "He's incredible. My brother has always been the pride of the White family."Dolly rudely interrupted me. "And what about Julian? Do you think he's impressive?"The mere mention of Julian made me uncomfortable. "Can we not talk about him?"Dolly softened her tone. "Fine, let's stick to your brother. Your brother is considered a rising star in Riverdale's business world, a prominent figure. Julian is barely catching up, but neither of them holds a candle to Miles!"I frowned. "That's a bit much. My brother is remarkable; he's no less capable than Miles."Dolly let out a scoff. "I never said your brother isn't great. But the White family doesn't have the deep foundations the Wynn family does. Look it up if you don't believe me."I fell silent. I was well aware of the White family's standing; it was indeed much smaller compared to the Wynns.Dolly snorted again. "Forget it. You're just a lovesick fool obsessed with Julian, blind to a

My head began to throb, a relentless buzzing sound filling my ears. The dizziness hit me again, and I struggled to explain, "I’m not a homewrecker... I’m not...""Not?" Kira’s voice shot up a notch. "You openly pursued Julian in your sophomore year! If that’s not being a homewrecker, then what is? Let me tell you, you ruined the relationship between Julian and Chloe. You’re the reason they broke up!""No, it’s not like that... It’s not... Dolly told me it wasn’t..." It couldn’t be true. I wasn’t a homewrecker. Dolly told me that Julian and Chloe had already broken up when I found out and began pursuing him. I wasn’t the other woman—it wasn’t possible. But how could I explain this to Kira? I had lost my memory; I didn’t even know what had happened back then. My body started trembling uncontrollably, cold sweat breaking out all over me. Regret washed over me. I shouldn’t have come to the Wynn estate. I should have stayed at the hospital earlier today. Getting admitted would’ve at

As they walked away, their figures looked somewhat pathetic.Edmund shook his head. “Sigh, he really can’t afford to lose.”Robert let out a sigh. “That woman of Julian’s is too restless.”Miles turned to the two elders and said, “Mr. Moore is actually quite capable, but when it comes to relationships, he seems to lack some judgment.”Edmund chuckled. “If he can’t even see through something this simple, how can anyone expect him to handle something bigger?”Robert nodded. “I used to think Julian was bold and ambitious, but now it seems he still lacks some depth.”The two men exchanged a look and shook their heads at the same time.Something stirred in me, and I turned to look at Miles. His expression remained neutral. He was still speaking in Julian’s defense, but…After what had just happened, Julian’s long-standing reputation in the business world was bound to take a hit.Who was the smartest person here?Suddenly, I felt like Miles was more of a silent hunter, quietly waiting for h

Julian let out a cold snort. "You were always jealous of her—spreading rumors, threatening her. You’ve done plenty of terrible things. This is just another one of your usual tricks."I was completely numb to his accusations by now.Turning to the attendants, I said calmly, "Go check the security footage. That should clear everything up."At those words, Julian’s expression shifted slightly, and Chloe’s face paled with obvious guilt.Immediately, she threw herself into Julian’s arms. "Julian, just let it go, okay? It’s just a small cut. Maybe Miss White didn’t mean to do it. She probably just slipped and accidentally hurt me."She turned to me, her voice soft and pitiful. "Right, Miss White?"I remained expressionless. "That’s not for me to say. After all, Mr. Moore already decided I was guilty before seeing any proof."Chloe quickly latched onto Julian again. "Julian, there are so many important people here tonight. My injury isn’t worth making a big deal over. Really, it was my own

The lounge was elegantly arranged, offering floral arrangement stations, live acoustic performances, and even a mahjong area, clearly designed for high-profile female guests.Familiar with these types of settings, I quietly selected a floral arrangement station and began assembling a bouquet, focusing on the delicate balance of colors and textures. Before long, Chloe sauntered over gracefully. Her cheeks were flushed, likely from the alcohol she had consumed during dinner.I glanced at her briefly but continued with my arrangement. She sat beside me, watching with a half-smile, studying me for a long moment.I finally asked, "Do you need something?"Chloe let out a soft laugh. "Miss White, I admit, I underestimated you."Snipping the stem of a flower, I replied indifferently, "Miss Clarke, if you have something to say, just say it."She exhaled and leaned in slightly. "One hundred million. I’ll convince Julian to give it to you. In exchange, you sign the divorce agreement amicably."I

Oh, so Julian thought I was bullying Chloe again. But then why hadn’t he been willing to publicly claim her just moments ago?Maybe my head still wasn’t fully right—because no matter how I looked at it, I couldn’t understand what went on in these men’s minds. After failing to get a reaction from me, Chloe immediately turned her attention to Miles. Her voice remained soft and delicate, the kind that would stir pity in any normal man. That was Chloe’s talent—shameless persistence and the ability to play the victim at any given moment.I heard her say, "Mr. Wynn, I’ve admired you for a long time. I never expected you to be even more handsome and charismatic in person than the rumors suggest."Miles responded with a simple, indifferent "Mm."Not discouraged, Chloe continued, "Mr. Wynn, you’ve accomplished so much at such a young age. I truly envy Miss White… She always seems to have a way of finding men like you."I nearly choked on my tea.Barely restraining my disgust, I lowered my eyes.

Everyone was speechless. The room fell into a brief silence. Julian's expression darkened even further, while Chloe's wasn't much better. I tugged lightly at Miles' sleeve. He glanced at me with a smile. "Now that I've said my piece, shall we take our seats?" With that, he led me to the table. Julian and Chloe remained standing, frozen in place. He came here expecting one thing but ended up completely humiliated instead. From the way his jaw clenched, I could tell he was debating whether to turn around and leave. But nearly everyone at this table was a heavyweight in the city’s business world. If he left now, it would undoubtedly damage his reputation. In the end, he forced himself to take a seat, his face as dark as ever, with Chloe following beside him. I caught the look she gave me—complicated, layered with jealousy, resentment, and deep-seated bitterness. Lowering my gaze, I chose to ignore the two of them entirely. I still didn’t fully understand why Miles

"The injustice she suffered in the past was my fault. From now on, she is my girlfriend, and one day, she will be Mrs. Wynn."A tremor ran through my entire body, and my eyes burned with unshed tears.I fought to hold them back, but my vision still blurred with moisture.I couldn’t see the expressions of those around me, nor did I want to look at Julian’s darkened face. All I knew was that Miles was standing up for me.He was reclaiming my name and defending me in front of everyone. He was using his status, his very name, to erase the disgrace of my past.He was pulling me out of the mud.Julian looked as though he wanted to lash out, but Chloe tugged at his arm before he could speak. With a soft, honeyed voice, she smiled. "Congratulations, Mr. Wynn! And to you as well, Miss White!"There was a barely perceptible flicker of jealousy and envy behind her delicate expression. She turned to Julian, who stood there fuming, and said sweetly, "Julian, look at Mr. Wynn, he’s so bold in pursui

I rose from the bench and walked toward Miles. My palms were damp, my heart clenched with tension, but in this setting, I knew one thing for certain—I could not lose my composure. If I faltered, it wouldn’t just be my own dignity at stake; it would reflect poorly on Miles as well. The moment Julian entered, Miles acknowledged him with a casual lift of his wine glass, a faint, unreadable smile playing on his lips. Then, he turned to me and called softly, "Eve, come here." Julian’s expression instantly darkened. His disbelief was plain as he turned his sharp gaze on me. But by then, I had already reached Miles' side. Without hesitation, Miles had me take his arm, his expression calm yet filled with amusement as he glanced at Julian, who was clearly reeling. He spoke in an easy, reassuring tone. "Eve, don’t worry." I forced down the unease in my chest and instinctively nodded. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t shaken. But deep down, I trusted Miles. I knew he was

Inside a spacious and elegantly decorated private dining room, I immediately recognized a few familiar faces. I had seen these people on TV before! My mind short-circuited again, struggling to process the moment. Fortunately, I still remembered Miles’ instructions. Forcing an awkward smile, I clung tightly to his arm. The people at the table turned toward us, all smiling with interest. Someone teased, "Well, well, this is the first time I’ve ever seen young Miles bring a date. Come here, let me take a look at you properly." The man speaking, Edmund Stanton, was dressed in a sharp, well-tailored three-piece suit, clearly custom-made. Miles led me forward with effortless composure and greeted him respectfully. "Good evening, Mr. Stanton. This is my girlfriend, Evelyn White." For a moment, the entire room fell into complete silence. Even the server pouring tea paused, glancing over in shock. As for me, I had gone completely stiff, unsure of where to put my hands or fee
