"You had to say that didn't you?" he asked standing up and proceeding to pace around the floor.

"You asked and I answered," she said and began to eat her burger.

"You are my assistant and I agree that you do such a great job, it might be practically impossible for me to find someone who would do such a good job" he said and her heart skipped.

It sounded so much like a compliment but also she felt like she was facing a disciplinary committee and was about to be punished for something she did.

"If you were not such a good assistant, I would have relieved you of your job," he said and her eyes widened.

"Are you thinking of firing me?" she asked leaping to her feet and standing in his path so he could not wander around again.

"Yeah," he said and then ran his hand through his hair. He breathed out and closed his eyes. "No," he said again and then dropped his hand to his side. "I don't know okay," he said and she raised her eyebrow.
