Althea tried to be better. It's been a week since Oscar's press conference and she tried to live by the terrible revelation from Oscar.
All she wants to do is accept her fate, after all, she brought this upon herself. She was still sulking and no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't help the grudge and hate cooking up within her. She would never have believed it if she was told that Oscar would betray her in such manner! But it's all good. Nothing can be done! Absolutely nothing. "I do hope he's happy wherever, he is.... " She mumbled painfully. For the past one week, she has refused to go to the prison cafeteria and eat. How can she eat when her heart is heavy and she's hurting deeply. But isn't she only tormenting herself by refusing to eat? While he's out there living a good life and eating healthily. " I must really be stupid " She said to herself again and rose from her bed, wiping the lone tears on her cheeks. "Althea Grace Miller?" She looked up when she heard her name - It was Warden Zheng. He gestured for her to step out of the cell and she did. The look on her face expressionless as she stared at him. Why is he calling her? What does he want? She thought within. "Follow me!" He said and began to move ahead, with hands folded to his back. She contemplated going with him or not. What has she done this time? Is he going to punish her? Noticing she wasn't coming, Warden Zheng halted and turned, passing her a stern look. The kind of look that tells her not to disobey. Swallowing hard, she followed him. ____________ Warden Zheng led her to the back of the prison house and Althea was mindful of each steps she took. She couldn't bring herself to trust anyone, not anymore. Not Oscar, not her inmates, not even the wardens or anyone at all. The last bit of trust in her has been shattered. "Sit..!!" Her thoughts were interrupted. She found Warden Zheng already seated on a bench and he tapped on the space beside him, signalling her to sit. Althea sat. "I heard you haven't been eating, is that true?" Althea looked at him, wondering what his business in her not eating is? Why should he care? Why would he call her out just to ask her this? "I haven't been that well..!" She responded. "No! I take it as you're emotionally stressed out and exhausted" She looked at him but did not say a word. With a sigh, Warden Zheng pulled out a food flask and stretched it to Althea. "Here, have it and eat. Just because of some reasons best known to you, or probably because you're locked up in here, shouldn't be a reason you should try to starve yourself to death" "I wasn't going to starve myself to death. I was headed to the cafeteria when you came" "Eat up!" She looked at the food flask, then back at Warden Zheng. She shook her head negatively and politely turned it down. Why is he being nice to her? Why would he get her food? These and so many other questions kept ringing in her head. "I know you're starving as it is, so just take it and eat. Feel free and be rest assured that it's not poisoned" He said. Althea swallowed, her tommy rumbling loudly as if to remind her how hungry she is. She slowly took the food flask from him and pulled it open. The enticing aroma from it filled her nostrils and her mouth watered from the sight of it. As much as she tried to refuse it, she really wanted to have a taste. It was nothing compared to the foods being served at the prison cafeteria, it was way better and different. She took a large spoonful from it and she craved for more. Hastily, she began to eat, savoring the taste. It feels like forever since she last tasted something as delicious and nutritious as this. Warden Zheng shook his head and chuckled slightly. He took out a bottle of water and passed it to her. "Slow down or you might choke" Althea was done eating in no time and she felt full. "Thank you!" She said to him while he only nodded his head in response. She had no idea what to do next, if she was to leave or remain seated because of the awkward silence that befell them both. Still, she couldn't help the nagging feeling within her. "Why are you being nice to me? Why did you take me to the prison clinic? Why did you bring me food? Why?" She couldn't help but ask before she could stop herself. She stared at the man keenly, watching as he simply laughed at her question. "Well, I would say I don't know either!..." Replied Warden Zheng. "I'd say there's something about you that piqued my interest. Don't ask what , because I don't have the answer to that!" Althea was silent... Still finding it hard to believe the old man's words. "You once asked if I really attempted to murder Katie Rolland!" She spoke up after sometime, inhaling deeply. "You don't have to answer that of you don't want to..." Warden Zheng said but Althea shook her head. "No, let me talk. My heart is heavy and only voicing out my pain would help ease that pain I feel inside" " You think so?" Tears welled up in her eyes as she nodded, then Warden Zheng gave her a curt nod and urged her to go ahead and speak up. " What difference does it make if I attempted to murder Katie Rolland or not. I'm stuck in this hell hole called prison. I blame myself for believing him so blindly and trusting his words. I should have known better and be smarter to know what he was up to. Like a piece of trash, I was used..." She paused and sniffed, then turned to Warden Zheng whose eyes were fixed on her. " If I was your daughter, what could you have possibly done to me for trusting the words of the man who claims to love me?" " I probably would pull your ears so hard and spank your head for being such a fool" Althea chuckled. " Right! I was a fool" She mumbled. " Listen dear, I have no idea why you had to say those words, but listen closely... Everyone in this prison house is a criminal but there are few who were cheated and robbed off their freedom, still they had to endure every misfortune because one way or the other, they had a role to play in everything. Therefore, I urge you not to push yourself too hard, but blame those who had wronged you deeply, okay?" He placed his hands on her shoulder, patting her gently.Gasps, heavy breaths, the sound of heels hitting the ground could be heard. Her gasps echoing through the empty spaces on the streets, the heavy footsteps behind, seemed unending and scary. A lady in her late twenties, short spiky blonde hair, piercing blue eyes- Running for her dear Life. Regardless of how tough and confident she seemed, her life is on the line right now, for she has just messed with the wrong person. She turned, her heart racing as those who were after her were already catching up to her. However, she halted on her steps with full force when a black SUV car screeched in front of her. She held the bag of money close to her chest, her heart thumping really fast and knowing fully well that she was doomed. She took a step back when a man alighted from the car. His black tuxedo suit, dark shades and all... He looked domineering and dangerous. His men had all surrounded her by now, leaving her with no room to escape. She groaned and fell on her knees when her legs were
She could recognize it just anywhere.. That bracelet, it's hers. Oscar had gifted it to her, it's the only thing of Oscar's she has here... How could she have lost it? Why didn't she notice? She could vividly recall taking it off out of anger after listening to Oscar's press conference. How then did it get to the warden? And what does it have to do with the inmate that tried to escape? These and many more questions flooded her mind. "You have ten seconds to step out... " The wardens began to count down and with each count he took, her heart kept beating. However, she stepped out before she could stop herself."Excuse me Warden, the bracelet is mine!." The Warden sharp gaze were fixed on her." So you are that inmate who tried to escape?"" No, I assure you, there seem to be a mix up somewhere. The bracelet is mine but I have no idea how it ended up with you. I didn't try to escape, I promise " She said in her defense. She hasn't been this confused in her entire life? How did th
Althea jerked up when a cup of iced water was poured on her, bringing her back to consciousness.Perhaps, it could have been better if she had just died than to be woken up to a life filled with more misery. She looked at the Wardens whom she have come to despise so much. They are also part of this torment she's experiencing by being so unjust."Althea..." She looked towards the direction of the voice, It was Warden Zheng."Please leave us.." He said to the other wardens who hesitated before leaving. When he was sure they were gone, he moved closer to Althea, squats to her level and places a comforting hand on her shoulder."I'm sorry this had to happen. I wasn't on duty that night, I would have done something to prevent this. You must have been so scared, weren't you?" Althea casts her gaze on him. She could see sincerity and concerns in his eyes. She nodded her head, responding to his question. "I.. I promise, I didn't try to escape" She forced herself to say."Oh dear! I believe
"Gosh! I feel fresh.." Lynx said, twirling hair sideways. " I honestly cannot remember the last time I felt this relieved and clean "" Well, we won't get to do this again until six months later... "Lynx sighed. " It's what we have to pass through as prisoners. Althea was quiet, her mind racing with thoughts of what Lynx had said."Let me ask you something Lynx" She turned to Lynx. "Tell me Lynx and I want you to be honest, if you had not been caught by the police, what would you be doing by now?" Lynx placed her hand underneath her jaw, thinking hard. "Let's just say I'd be super rich by now. Having mansions built all round the states. I'd probably be a multimillionaire, don't you think?"" That actually sounds weird! Why would you live off someone else's livelihood? " Althea asked. " Just kidding... " Lynx teased, nudging her arms playfully. "Well, to answer your question rightly, I guess I'd be better off with a well paying Job. I really am not a fraudster you know, but cir
Althea felt belly sweet when the Warden forcefully dragged out the inmates. She stuck out her tongue at the chubby woman who had spoken Ill of her. She's not the type to get back at others, but this was worth it. They shouldn't mess with her just because of her crimes. They're equals regardless."Hey! Why the hell did you do that? " Lynx asked, slapping her arm."They were using hard drugs. Besides you know it's against the law of this precinct right? " "Still, it's none of your business Althea. You shouldn't have had them reported. They have been doing this for ages, and no inmates have dared to report them." Lynx scolded." They got on my nerves. I would have let them off the hook if they had quietly put the cigarettes off but they made fun of my past and I got sick of it. Well, I'm not the one to just see what's wrong and let it slide" Althea said with an eye roll." Well, this is prison... You don't react to certain things. Besides, rights and laws do not work here. They are cert
"Althea!.. Althea!!" Lynx tapped on Althea gently, trying to wake her up. She was awoken by the sound of Althea murmuring in her sleep like she was having a nightmare. Balls of sweats formed on Althea's forehead. Her brows creasing into a frown and her eyes shutting tightly. Lynx tapped her again, her voice raising as she called Althea's name again. Althea jerked up upon hearing her name. Her eyes frantically searching everywhere but as it settled on Lynx, she calmed down a bit. "What happened?" She asked. Lynx crossed her arms underneath her bóöbs, raising her brows. "I should be asking you what happened to you? You kept mumbling in your sleep. Where you having a nightmare or something?" Althea let out a weary sigh, her hand rising to massage the tension in her forehead. She had a nightmare. A really terrifying one at that. It was a dream about Oscar and Katie Roland getting married on the day she was to get released and then, she rushed over to the church to try to stop th
It was visiting hours but Althea sat curled up on her bunk bed. She closed her eyes, lots of thoughts going through her head. She reminisced over the moment she and Katie were at loggerheads and that was over a year ago. _______________Althea used to work at the reception in an hotel when a lady showed up looking elegant as ever. Her bags, shoes and glasses all looked really expensive. She stood in front of the reception and took off her glasses while her mouth rumbled as she chewed her bubble gum noisily."Welcome to Kings Hotel ma'am.." Althea said, smiling widely."Are you Althea Grace Miller?" Althea felt perplexed that the stranger knows her name. However, she remained calm and answered."Yes ma'am, is there a problem?" "Not at all, but I want to have a word with you outside. Let's talk!" Katie turned and walked away, acting all bossy.Althea hesitated, wondering why some Lady she doesn't know wouldn't want to have a word with her. But, she felt it might be work related and
What do you want?" Althea asked, her eyes racing through the inmates. The chubby lady took a step forward and Althea unconsciously took a step back. She could not understand why they would suddenly show up and to top it all, there was no one else in the restroom. She had a strange feeling about this but she stood firm. Lynx was right. They're going to get back at her. It wasn't a new thing to her tho because that's what prisoners do. They never let things slide. "If you aren't going to respond to my question, then move aside, I need to get back to my Ward. She made to pass again, but the chubby lady pushed her backwards, making her fall flat on her butt.Althea groaned slightly. Here comes the bullying she thought she'd avoid at all cost. But still, she did not regret having them reported. They needed to learn their lesson. The chubby lady crouched down before her, grabbing her hair and yanking them backwards. This was always their thing. As though her hair was a gold medal, why
