Gasps, heavy breaths, the sound of heels hitting the ground could be heard. Her gasps echoing through the empty spaces on the streets, the heavy footsteps behind, seemed unending and scary.
A lady in her late twenties, short spiky blonde hair, piercing blue eyes- Running for her dear Life. Regardless of how tough and confident she seemed, her life is on the line right now, for she has just messed with the wrong person. She turned, her heart racing as those who were after her were already catching up to her. However, she halted on her steps with full force when a black SUV car screeched in front of her. She held the bag of money close to her chest, her heart thumping really fast and knowing fully well that she was doomed. She took a step back when a man alighted from the car. His black tuxedo suit, dark shades and all... He looked domineering and dangerous. His men had all surrounded her by now, leaving her with no room to escape. She groaned and fell on her knees when her legs were kicked, she least expected that. "You little snail..." Came his hoarse voice as he squats to her level. The lady cringed inwardly with fear but still maintained a confident look. "How dare you steal from me?" She pushed the bag forward before him. "Here's your money. I did not touch a dime from it. It's true what they say, nothing can get passed you"... she snorted. " You have your money now, so just let me go! " She added, wanting to leave so badly. The man stood up, taking a step backwards while he lets out a really provoking laughter. As swiftly as possible, he pulled out a gun and aimed it at her, sending cold shivers down her spine. His fingers, reaching for the trigger. "Do you honestly think I'd spare a lowlife thief as you? Nobody messes with me and goes Scott free" " But you should spare me! I stole from you now you have it back, what's the big deal? " She challenged. His brows curved into a deep frown, hating the fact that he's being challenged. Of course he knew how scared she is, if not, why would she be sweating profusely on a cold night as this but she just wants to be smart. " Such a sneaky snail.. " He mumbled and squats to her level again. He grabbed her neck, his eyes blazing with fury while she gasped for breaths. "I have a job for you. You look smart and you probably will be fit for the Job, I need you to bring someone to me. Only until then will I decide if I'd Spare your life or not. That depends on how well you carry out this Job" At first, she didn't want to accept his offer but he was going to kill her just by strangling her to death. Plus, she's not ready to die anytime soon. " Fine... Fine.. I'll... I'll..do anything " She struggled to say. He let go of her neck, a sly smile forming on his lips while she coughed hard. " Take her to the car!" He ordered his men who pulled the lady off the floor, and towards a Red Toyota car while the man retreated into his black SUV. ___________________ Althea returned back to her cell, a feeling of emptiness washing over her. Her mind was blank at the moment and all she did was to think about Warden Zheng and why he's being so nice at her. Still, she was grateful to him and concludes within herself not to trust him yet. It felt really awkward for the prison's head Warden to act so nice to her. "Where are you coming from newbie?" The red haired lady asked, stepping on her way with hands on her waist. Althea sighed deeply. "It's none of your business!" "Of course it's our business newbie! As your fellow inmates, we care to know what's going on between you and that old Warden" "What are you talking about!?" "We see him giving you special treatments always. Like, getting you food while the rest of us settle for the junk food at the prison cafeteria. Tell me, why does he treat you differently? You're new here, yet you're the first to get special treatments from the head Warden." Althea didn't know what to say. She must really award her inmates an accolade for always poke nosing into someone else's affair. "There's what we call privacy and staying off my business! You should do that!!" She rolled her eyes and moved past the lady, but suddenly stumbled over and fell flat on the floor, getting her left hand bruised. It was obvious the red haired lady intentionally made her trip. "Or should we assume that you're trying to flirt with the head Warden?" The inmates said with a shrillness that grated on Althea's nerve. " What did you just say?" " You heard me loud and clear. Why else should you be treated differently if you aren't throwing yourself to the head Warden. Do you think doing that will get you out of prison so quick?" Althea scowled at the inmates who were now murmuring among themselves. She hated the fact that they had rumoured her to be a flirt. However, she still cannot fathom the reason why he's being nice to her. "Still, it's non of your damn business!" She growled. "You...." The red haired lady was going to say but was interrupted by the wardens hitting the bars of the cell and calling on all inmates of each cell to step out. Althea got up from the floor and moved out of the cell, together with other inmates. She couldn't help but wonder what the commotion is all about. She has always thought that the life of a prisoner she has seen on TV series were always a show and non of those happens in real life. But, she was wrong. The crazy inmates, the dramas from the wardens, is driving her nuts. With her hands at the back of her head, she couldn't wait for whatever this is all about to be over. All she wants right now is to get some rest. "Do you all think that this is a prison house that you can play games and try to escape uh?" Said one of the warden, looking angry. "Last night, an inmate tried to escape but before we could get her, she maneuvered her way back in. How lucky that inmate was to keep her identity hidden. However, she wasn't that smart not to leave a single clue behind" Side talks erupted from the inmates. That wasn't the least of concern to Althea. She snorted inwardly. "Do you all know the repercussions for an inmate to try to escape? This is a prison house where you're being punished for the crimes you have all committed. Trying to escape is also considered a crime and any inmate caught in that act, shall be dealt with" "Now, whoever has this bracelet should step out right this instant or shall be faced with double of the punishment if hesitant" The Warden ordered. Althea sighed, feeling great urge to get some sleep. She looked up at the wardens, her eyes settling on the bracelets which looked familiar Her eyes moved to her wrists, then back to the bracelet. A gasped left her lips while her eyes grew wide in shock. Chapter 9 She could recognize it just anywhere.. That bracelet, it's hers. Oscar had gifted it to her, it's the only thing of Oscar's she has here... How could she have lost it? Why didn't she notice? She could vividly recall taking it off out of anger after listening to Oscar's press conference. How then did it get to the warden? And what does it have to do with the inmate that tried to escape? These and many more questions flooded her mind. "You have ten seconds to step out... " The wardens began to count down and with each count he took, her heart kept beating. However, she stepped out before she could stop herself. "Excuse me Warden, the bracelet is mine!." The Warden sharp gaze were fixed on her. " So you are that inmate who tried to escape?" " No, I assure you, there seem to be a mix up somewhere. The bracelet is mine but I have no idea how it ended up with you. I didn't try to escape, I promise " She said in her defense. She hasn't been this confused in her entire life? How did this all turn towards her. "Save your explanation for the custodial officer...." He faced the other wardens. "Take her" The Wardens moved to her and grabbed her, pushing her forward like a lowlife slave. Althea still had no idea what was happening, but she thought it was best not to argue with the wardens so as not to complicate things. She turned slightly, staring back at her inmates only to see them smiling at each other. She had a gut feeling that this really wasn't a coincidence of any sort. Else, why would her bracelet be found at such a place. She balled her fists, while gritting her teeth hard. _________________ Althea sat, her hands handcuffed and on the desk before her. Her shoulders downcast and her head lowered. Tears brimmed from the corner of her eyes as she tried to think about what wrong she must have done to her inmates. Why are they all after her life? Isn't she already ruined as it is? Why should they make her suffer more? She's so sure that they orchestrated everything just to make her the prey. If it isn't the red haired crazy lady, it could be any of her minions. The Wardens paid no attention even as she tried to make them know that they have the wrong person. What they're keen about is the bracelet belonging to her. She didn't know how long she has been seated but her back hurts a lot. but she wondered what they're going to do to her. She lifted her head up when the sound of footsteps approaching caught her attention. "So you had the nerve to want to escape uh? Do you think you're so special?" The custodial officer said, walking towards her. "No please. You have to believe me, I have no idea what is going on! I promise, I didn't try to escape" She said in her defense. "Then..." The officer hit the desk loudly, making her flinch back in fear. "How do you explain the bracelet that's yours? Do you think you can play us for a fool? who was trying to help you escape? I'm certain you weren't alone, who are your companions?" "I promise, I'm being framed by my inmates. I swear, I have nothing to do with this" There was a stunned silence and all that could be heard where that of the officer, tapping the desk with his finger. " You have committed a grave offence by trying to escape prison. All evidences points to you. All you have to do now is mention those who were part of your plan except you're willing to serve the punishment for all" Althea shook her head negatively. " I have said this before and I'll say it again officer, I am not the culprit. Plus, how my bracelet ended up there, is still a mystery to me" " Very well then.. Since you have refused to open up, be ready to accept whatever comes your way.." He turned to the Wardens. " Take her to the confinement room. She is to be locked up in there for five days with no food or water. Let her experience what hell really is like in prison " He gave his order and walked away. The confinement room was not the least of what Althea had expected. Her jail cell was better. It was dark and terrifying. There was a small window at the top corner that emits just a little light into the room. She looked back to the closed door, she could hear their footsteps retreating. Hot tears circulated in her eyes as she looked around the dark room, barely seeing a thing. She hated being in the dark. The only source of light was from the small window. How can she survive being in here without food or water for five good days. She moved slowly to a corner, curling herself up and bursting into tears. No one is on her side. Whether she tries to defend herself, no one believes her? Why won't the wardens carry out proper investigations? Why should they assume just because they found her bracelet? The police who are meant to protect the rights of individuals and even criminals as well have become so unfair in their dealings. But then, she's always the one getting punished for other's mistakes! She hated herself for being so gullible and stupid towards Love. This was not the perfect Romeo and Juliet love story where they died for each other's sake. This was reality and Love sucks!! _________________ Five days came by in a flash and Althea barely noticed. She has lost track of time. She couldn't believe the wardens actually left her in here without coming to check if she's dead or not. She could feel it, the heaviness in her head as well as the emptiness in her tommy. Her throat feels dry and she feels drained of energy. Her body aches from sleeping on the cold floor and she could barely breath as she felt suffocated. She strained her eyes open, forcing herself up as she couldn't handle it anymore. As she stood up, her legs felt jelly... Balls of sweats forming on her forehead. Her lips were dry as well, so much for someone who hasn't even had a drop of water in days. Althea knew that she would not recognize her own reflection if she were to look in the mirror. She must have become so thin and ugly. Getting to the door, she banged on the metal door before her. She needs to get out of here as soon as possible. She needs a lot of air. "Please, get me out of here. Someone, get me out..." Unable to maintain her stance, she lost balance and fell to the ground, her hands still banging on the door weakly. "please... Someone!! " She mumbled before collapsing to the ground completely. Her head heavy and her sense of hearing diminishing. If this is how death feels like, then she's at the verge of dying. Hot tears rolled down her eyes as everywhere suddenly went blank. She could recognize it just anywhere.. Althea jerked up when a cup of iced water was poured on her, bringing her back to consciousness.Perhaps, it could have been better if she had just died than to be woken up to a life filled with more misery. She looked at the Wardens whom she have come to despise so much. They are also part of this torment she's experiencing by being so unjust."Althea..." She looked towards the direction of the voice, It was Warden Zheng."Please leave us.." He said to the other wardens who hesitated before leaving. When he was sure they were gone, he moved closer to Althea, squats to her level and places a comforting hand on her shoulder."I'm sorry this had to happen. I wasn't on duty that night, I would have done something to prevent this. You must have been so scared, weren't you?" Althea casts her gaze on him. She could see sincerity and concerns in his eyes. She nodded her head, responding to his question. "I.. I promise, I didn't try to escape" She forced herself to say."Oh dear! I believe
"Gosh! I feel fresh.." Lynx said, twirling hair sideways. " I honestly cannot remember the last time I felt this relieved and clean "" Well, we won't get to do this again until six months later... "Lynx sighed. " It's what we have to pass through as prisoners. Althea was quiet, her mind racing with thoughts of what Lynx had said."Let me ask you something Lynx" She turned to Lynx. "Tell me Lynx and I want you to be honest, if you had not been caught by the police, what would you be doing by now?" Lynx placed her hand underneath her jaw, thinking hard. "Let's just say I'd be super rich by now. Having mansions built all round the states. I'd probably be a multimillionaire, don't you think?"" That actually sounds weird! Why would you live off someone else's livelihood? " Althea asked. " Just kidding... " Lynx teased, nudging her arms playfully. "Well, to answer your question rightly, I guess I'd be better off with a well paying Job. I really am not a fraudster you know, but cir
Althea felt belly sweet when the Warden forcefully dragged out the inmates. She stuck out her tongue at the chubby woman who had spoken Ill of her. She's not the type to get back at others, but this was worth it. They shouldn't mess with her just because of her crimes. They're equals regardless."Hey! Why the hell did you do that? " Lynx asked, slapping her arm."They were using hard drugs. Besides you know it's against the law of this precinct right? " "Still, it's none of your business Althea. You shouldn't have had them reported. They have been doing this for ages, and no inmates have dared to report them." Lynx scolded." They got on my nerves. I would have let them off the hook if they had quietly put the cigarettes off but they made fun of my past and I got sick of it. Well, I'm not the one to just see what's wrong and let it slide" Althea said with an eye roll." Well, this is prison... You don't react to certain things. Besides, rights and laws do not work here. They are cert
"Althea!.. Althea!!" Lynx tapped on Althea gently, trying to wake her up. She was awoken by the sound of Althea murmuring in her sleep like she was having a nightmare. Balls of sweats formed on Althea's forehead. Her brows creasing into a frown and her eyes shutting tightly. Lynx tapped her again, her voice raising as she called Althea's name again. Althea jerked up upon hearing her name. Her eyes frantically searching everywhere but as it settled on Lynx, she calmed down a bit. "What happened?" She asked. Lynx crossed her arms underneath her bóöbs, raising her brows. "I should be asking you what happened to you? You kept mumbling in your sleep. Where you having a nightmare or something?" Althea let out a weary sigh, her hand rising to massage the tension in her forehead. She had a nightmare. A really terrifying one at that. It was a dream about Oscar and Katie Roland getting married on the day she was to get released and then, she rushed over to the church to try to stop th
It was visiting hours but Althea sat curled up on her bunk bed. She closed her eyes, lots of thoughts going through her head. She reminisced over the moment she and Katie were at loggerheads and that was over a year ago. _______________Althea used to work at the reception in an hotel when a lady showed up looking elegant as ever. Her bags, shoes and glasses all looked really expensive. She stood in front of the reception and took off her glasses while her mouth rumbled as she chewed her bubble gum noisily."Welcome to Kings Hotel ma'am.." Althea said, smiling widely."Are you Althea Grace Miller?" Althea felt perplexed that the stranger knows her name. However, she remained calm and answered."Yes ma'am, is there a problem?" "Not at all, but I want to have a word with you outside. Let's talk!" Katie turned and walked away, acting all bossy.Althea hesitated, wondering why some Lady she doesn't know wouldn't want to have a word with her. But, she felt it might be work related and
What do you want?" Althea asked, her eyes racing through the inmates. The chubby lady took a step forward and Althea unconsciously took a step back. She could not understand why they would suddenly show up and to top it all, there was no one else in the restroom. She had a strange feeling about this but she stood firm. Lynx was right. They're going to get back at her. It wasn't a new thing to her tho because that's what prisoners do. They never let things slide. "If you aren't going to respond to my question, then move aside, I need to get back to my Ward. She made to pass again, but the chubby lady pushed her backwards, making her fall flat on her butt.Althea groaned slightly. Here comes the bullying she thought she'd avoid at all cost. But still, she did not regret having them reported. They needed to learn their lesson. The chubby lady crouched down before her, grabbing her hair and yanking them backwards. This was always their thing. As though her hair was a gold medal, why
At an Island in Italy, stood a beautiful and magnificent resort. The nice cool hair and the view, gave a wonderful atmosphere. Standing at the rooftop, with a glass of while in his left hand and a stick of cigarettes in his right hand, was a man.Dark long hair, piercing brown eyes which was enigmatic and emitted a dark aura.He puffed a large smoke from his cigarette, enjoying the fact that it circulated through his veins. Just then, one of his trusted guards named Lucas, walked up to him. "Sir?..." "What is it Lucas?" He spoke in his hoarse voice, sipping from his glass of wine." It's time for the call..." Lucas reminded. His brows curved into a light frown as he tore his gaze away from the landscape and glanced at Lucas briefly."Make the call..." Lucas immediately pulled out a cellphone and placed a call to an unknown number as instructed. It rang to a stop and he tried again the second time and it was responded to almost immediately, her faint voice audible from the other e
Feeling the sensation of someone caressing her cheeks, Althea jerked up with full force, snapping her eyes open and join seeing Phoenix, her eyes widened and she moved back in fear.Phoenix on the other hand was startled by her reaction. This was new as she would always feel relaxed around him and even snuggle closer to his touch.Althea swallowed, knowing fully well that her sudden reaction might raise suspicions from Phoenix. She moved closer but not too close and thought it was better to say something."Phoenix.... You're home? I wasn't expecting you back so soon!" " Yes, I decided to come back early and surprise you, but I guess I ended up getting surprised instead"Althea chuckled nervously but trying so hard not to make her emotions known." I'm sorry, I got scared for no reason. I thought it was a thief or something but now that I know it's you, I feel relieved.." She said.Phoenix stared at her briefly, he could help but think that she's acting kinda weird. Or maybe he's just
Phoenix just rounded up his business meeting with some top government officials in California who are willing to partner with him in order to have some of his drugs and firearms shipped into the country. And as soon as he got into his hotel room, he has a quick bath and stepped out, then changed into something casual and began to operate on his laptop. A knock came through his door and he ushered whoever that is in. It was Nova Snow. She walked in, looking like she got something to report. "Sir, something huge just happened!!" Phoenix looked at him, his left brows raised up as curiosity filled him. "And?..." "Oscar Williams is hosting a press conference right now and he's announcing the death of Katie Roland.." Phoenix was taken aback as well as surprised by the sudden info. "What?" "It's true boss... You can have a look..." She gave him his phone. He took it and began to watch Oscar's live conference, listening attentively. Right there stood Oscar looking pitiable and talk
As Althea walked behind him, she felt pretty nervous. She kept rubbing her palms together and thinking of what to say to him.He stopped walking when he got to the poolside, then turned to face her and tucked his hands into his pant pocket."Yes, you wanted to speak with me privately!" He spoke up first."Yes, Uhm..." Althea swallowed, her head blank of what she's going to say.Why won't she be nervous when she has actually thought of him as the first person ever. No doubt, she's really ashamed of herself. She looked at him but quickly averted her gaze "Well, I just want to apologize for everything. I know I shouldn't have hated you but you really can't blame me.... You left me in there with no word and you even sent your lawyer with some money. I felt bittered and thought you actually used me and that's why I teamed up with Phoenix when I had the chance.I felt he was the only ray of light amidst all darkness. But I'm really sorry. If I had the slightest clue that is were only trying
Althea walked in with Mayra to see the full team. Katie Roland was there too and she smiled upon seeing her. Althea returned the smile back. Oscar sat on the sofa, with his left leg crossed over the other. They were all silent as if waiting for her to say something. It felt awkward because never ever did she think of joining forces with the man she once hated. But it's all good, it's better safe than being sorry. "Uhm... I know this must come as a shock for everyone that I'm here, but I know the truth now. I overheard Phoenix talking with his gang members and he plans on killing me once this is over..." "That rascal..." Oscar groaned underneath his breath, folding his hands into a tight fist. Althea continued anyways. "You must all consider me as selfish or stupid, but we must do everything possible to bring Phoenix down as soon as possible..." "Tell us everything you found out Althea!!" Oscar demanded. "He plans on doing something to you when he returns and he said that woul
Phoenix's men at the psychiatric hospital were all vigilant but Oscar and his team kept their cool. Good thing the uniform worn by the foreign doctors was something that covered their faces as well so there was nothing to worry about. They were shown the Ward The senator's wife was in as as they made their way in, Oscar was taken aback by the condition she was in. Senator James Grayson was someone that he respected a lot. Way back when he was still a teenager, Senator James used to work as a Gardener and also attended the same Collete with him. He was more like an older brother to Oscar and their relationship was still that way until he died a year ago. At first Oscar thought that his wife indeed killed him but after everything Rachel told him, the least he could do for the senator was to get his wife out of the cruel hands of Phoenix and his Men. He has always had doubts regarding Senator James death, because he loved his wife too much and she also loves him so much making the c
Althea didn't sleep a wink throughout the night as she laid wide awake with fear that she might get killed anytime soon. She doesn't feel safe around here anymore! Her life is in danger just because of the foolish mistake she made trusting Phoenix.Lynx had told her not to trust people easily but she was blinded and thought of Lynx as someone who doesn't want anything good for her.She turned to Nova and thought Nova was the most supportive.Little did she know that she was slowly walking into the devil's cage. Maybe she wasn't even depressed at all, it could be just a made up story.Thinking about everything she had done with Phoenix filled her with lots of regrets. She thought she had finally met a good Man... The kisses they shared and the romantic moments, it all disgusts her now.How did she end up loving such a despicable man? How, for goodness sake!!!She finds it hard to believe she actually did sleep with a man who's out to kill her real soon. She got off the bed and raced t
That night, Althea laid wide awake on her bed. Sleep was far away from her while her gaze were fixed directly at the wall clock. She kept following the the rhythm of the clock ticking, counting every second that passes. To her, it seemed like it's moving too slow, increasing her anxiety. With each passing second, she keeps getting nervous. Some point, she questions herself what she's about to do? But yet again, she feels the need to do something since this whole thing is basically about her. She's the center to the games either of them is playing and she needs to get to the bottom of this before it gets too late. As soon as the clock stricked 12, her heart did a huge leap. She rubbed her sweaty palm together as Rachel's words resounded in her head.A door by the stairs, opens at midnight and that's when Phoenix holds a brief meeting with his gang members. She lifted herself off the bed and wore her flip-flops. She moved to her door, reached out for the door knob but suddenly flinc
"Good morning Boss!" Mayra greeted as Oscar descended down the stairs. He nodded at her and walked towards the dining where his meal was already served."C'mon, have breakfast with me" He said to her. She refused at first but when he insisted, she joined him."It's Saturday Mayra and I told you to take today off. Why are you here so early?" He asked scooping some quantity of Rice. "I find off days boring boss. I'm used to carrying out orders and I'm here just in case you need anything!" She said. " You work so hard Mayra, Once all this is over, I'd repay you for your hardwork so far, that's a promise "" I appreciate your generosity Boss!"" No, it's not generosity, it's the right thing to do. As a woman, you need time for yourself. Don't worry Mayra, I'd surely repay you handsomely once thus is all over!"She nodded." By the way, we'll commence plans on how to take Senator James wife from the psychiatric hospital. We can't help her if she's in there..."" Got it Boss. I'll discuss
"Boss, Ma'am Althea is back !!!" A maid rushed to Phoenix's room and announced.Phoenix stepped out in a rush, heading downstairs. He didn't stop until he stood right beside her. He grabbed her, his eyes searching all over her."Where have you been Althea? I was so worried sick!!!" He said.Althea looked at him, the look in his eyes which evidently betrayed his words. Was he really worried sick about her or he's just making things up. She couldn't help but have doubts after everything she was told." Althea?" He called, pulling her back to reality."I'm.. I'm sorry for the inconvenience phoenix. I know you must have been worried but I knew you wouldn't let me even if I asked. That's why going with Nanny Patal was the only best option. I wanted to visit my home. There was something precious that I had to take...." "And what is that?" He asked, his gaze was riveted on her like he was trying to seek the truth from her himself. As a matter of fact, Althea was more than confused. What is
