The cab dropped Amelia off in front of her residence in the Hamptons. The girl stepped out of the vehicle, concentrating on getting into the seaside property with her right foot. The wheeled suitcase was dragged to the door and soon she rang the bell that rang silently outside.
"Good morning." Said the housekeeper as soon as she opened the door to the residence.
" Good morning, Mr. Alderidge asked me to come." Amelia answered. The housekeeper just smiled and gave Amelia the way, leading her through the house to the living room." I will tell Mr. Alderidge, please wait here. " The housekeeper said, walking out of the room and leaving her there alone. She watched the place, approaching the main wall where some pictures were hanging. She was startled when she heard the metallic noise of a lighter, and noticed a man sitting facing the fireplace, as the smoke and smell of cigarettes gradually filled the room.
" Good morning. " Amelia spoke as she approached, but the man seemed to ignore her. Amelia tried again, walking towards the man sitting there." Good morning, sir. " She tried again to get his attention. " My name is Amelia Jones, I'm the new nurse. He continued to ignore her, enjoying his cigarette. The smell made Amelia slightly nauseous. She hated cigarettes. She took a deep breath, her fingers caressing the Greek eye hanging from her bracelet." I hope you like my work. It's the first time since I graduated that I've been hired, but I swear I'm great at what I do. " Amelia said, trying somehow to get his attention, even if uselessly. " My professors gave me great references and I graduated from the best medical school in South Carolina." And at what point will you tell the truth? " The man asked as he interrupted her, his penetrating voice so deep it made Amelia uncomfortable. He turned the wheelchair around, facing Amelia, bringing the cigarette to his lips.
Amelia was surprised by his question, staring into his blue eyes. He was a handsome man. His square jaw was covered by a thick blond beard, despite his elongated face. A blanket covered his legs and he wore a sweatshirt over his torso. His hair was equally short and blond, sticking up in all possible directions. As Amelia looked at him, she felt intimidated." I didn't lie. " Amelia replied, standing her ground. She wouldn't let herself be intimidated by that man, he didn't have that power like all the others did. Not that time.
" So you, a child, took the job as a nurse in this place away from everything just out of kindness? " He spoke as he sneered, taking a drag on his cigarette. " Or did you come after a rich invalid man for the purpose of an advantageous marriage? " he asked, his expression hard and shrewd.
Amelia's green eyes widened with shock; what he was saying was complete nonsense.
" You offend me! " She raised her voice, astonishment transforming her face." It's your presence here that offends me, girl. " The man replied, frowning and squeezing his eyes shut. " Clearly, there is another reason. " I took this job because I need it. Your bank account doesn't interest me. " Amelia replied, feeling her heartbeat quicken. " Now I understand why no one takes this job." You don't have the profile of a nurse that we usually hire, much more experienced than you. You're young, and this place at the end of the world is not the favorite kind of job for people of your age. " He replied, realizing that he had really offended the girl." Well, that's exactly why it's perfect. I'm not interested in anything more than the peace this place brings. " Amelia answered, taking a deep breath and closing her eyes to try to pull herself together." Look, I really need this job. I have no interest in your bank account or in you other than my own. Besides taking care of your health. " she said. The man was watching her, his piercing blue eyes analyzing not only Amelia's expression, but also her posture. She was hiding something and he could tell.
She was hiding something, but it was not what he was thinking. Amelia's mind was never as absurd as the one he was talking about. Marriage was definitely not in her plans, not even a blow from the chest. Even more so with a man as arrogant and rude as that, sitting in front of her. She just wanted a new life, new expectations beyond what had been created and molded for her all those years. But he was a man and rich, he would never understand what it would be like to be a woman and even more, to go through everything she went through in her twenty"three years. He preferred to judge her with all his prejudice, hurting his pride right away without even meeting her." Well, I am here. I want this job, and hardly anything you say is going to change my mind. " Amelia replied, slowly regaining her composure, even though her breathing and heartbeat were still rapid. " Although my future patient turned out to be a very difficult person.
" So you're hiding something, girl. " He stared, his face hardening.Amelia took a deep breath, sadness clouding her features as she recalled some of her past and her personal wounds.
" My past and my motives are none of your business. " she replied. The door was opened again and the housekeeper entered the room accompanied by another man, equally blond and with features similar to the man in the wheelchair.
" Miss Jones, I'm Ethan Alderidge. " The man introduced himself, approaching Amelia and greeting her with a handshake. " I see you've already met my brother, Alexander. " Ethan hushed, and Amelia could see his nervous smile.
" Yes, I've had that pleasure. " She lied, smiling wanly at him as Alexander swiveled his chair toward the fireplace once more." I hope he was polite to you. " Ethan spoke up, but Amelia realized that those words were meant more for Alexander than for her, and she nodded. " Come, Miss Jones. We'll talk better in the office. " Ethan spoke up, and Amelia motioned to grab her bag, but the housekeeper beat her to it." I'll take it, don't worry. " The woman spoke and Amelia nodded, even more so when she noticed her compassionate smile.Amelia was about to leave the room when she heard Alexander move in his chair and light another cigarette.
" Whatever you are hiding, it can't be any worse than this pathetic life. " Amelia and Ethan listened to him speak.Amy took a deep breath, remembering all the shit that led her to that place, all the scars, and the man she abandoned in Charleston on her wedding day.Amelia followed Ethan silently into his office, entering just as he opened the door for her.Ethan indicated one of the armchairs for Amelia to sit in; she still felt tense from her first, bad impression of Alexander. As soon as she sat down, Amelia opened her mouth."I'm sorry, Mr. Alderidge. But I don't think I'm the best person for this job. " She spoke as she stared at him, but Ethan quickly held up his hand for her to hear him."I know my brother is a very difficult person, Amelia. "Ethan replied, he could see the exhaustion in her expression. "But before I give up, I want you to listen to me, okay?Amelia nodded." Alexander wasn't always like this. He was an active man, he raised the company by himself since our parents died. A year ago he was in a car accident with his late fiancée. Unfortunately Morgan was pregnant and she and the baby died in the accident. "Ethan began to tell." He was in a coma for three months and we even thought he wasn't coming back, but when he did, my
That same afternoon Amelia sent Benjamin an e-mail explaining what had happened. He immediately bought her another cell phone and had it delivered the next day.The next morning Amelia left her room and went to the beach. She needed to get rid of that cell phone, believing that even if it was broken, it could send some kind of signal. Luckily, the Alderidge residence had a pier that led down to the sea. Amelia enjoyed her walk on the beach, it was still too early for anyone there to be awake. Quickly, she went to the pier and threw her cell phone into the sea. Taking a deep breath, she believed she would be safe.Returning to the house, Amelia found one of the second floor windows open, having the strange sensation of being watched. Hurrying her steps, she returned to her room and changed her clothes and headed for Mr. Alderidge's room."Good morning. "Amelia greeted him, entering the room and walking to the window, but noticing that it was already open."You just woke up?" she quest
The loud, desperate knocking woke Amelia immediately. She rushed to the door to open it and found Mrs. Smith in tears, completely beside herself."Helen, for God's sake, what happened? "Amelia asked, not understanding why."It's Mr. Alderidge, he's unconscious on the bedroom floor! Immediately, Amelia grabbed her first aid bag and ran to Alexander's room. When she arrived, she found Mr. Smith trying to wake him up, but without success. Amelia quickly approached him, checking Alexander's weakened breathing and heartbeat."CALL AN AMBULANCE NOW! "Amelia shouted, setting Alexander's heavy body on the floor.Opening his eyes, she noticed his pupils dilated and unfocused while a white foam escaped from his mouth that was beginning to turn blue."Ron, look in the bathroom for something, where are his meds? Amelia asked, taking the stethoscope and checking his heartbeat one more time.Mr. Smith would go to the bathroom, but soon returned with the weak ones in hand, completely empty.Amelia
When Alexander finally went back to sleep, Amelia took the opportunity to do the same. During the early hours of the morning she heard a movement in the room, imagining it to be one of the nurses. As soon as dawn came, Amelia felt a hand grab her arm and shake her awake. As she opened her eyes, she realized that it was Ethan."Amelia, good morning. Can you walk me outside?" he asked in a calm, low voice and Amelia quickly nodded in agreement, getting up.As soon as they were out of the room, she realized that Ben was also there and immediately hugged him."How is he?" Ethan asked, he could see the tiredness on his face."He's resting, but he's fine. I was able to get him to throw up most of the meds and when we arrived, he had a wash. " Amelia informed, turning her attention back to Benjamin." But why are you here?" She questioned curiously."Ben was with me. We were having dinner when Mrs. Smith called and we took the car here." Ethan answered for him and Benjamin just nodded. As so
After eating breakfast, Amelia returned to her room and waited for the doctor's visit. She couldn't even look at Alexander in bed without those messages coming back to her.She felt betrayed by him. He had no right to send someone to investigate her life. Not when she had just saved his.Alexander moved around the bed, looking for Amelia who was sitting near the window. He smiled at the sight of her, but she didn't reciprocate when she realized he was awake."Good morning, Jones. " He spoke and Amelia approached, handing him a glass of water with a straw. It didn't take him long to realize that something was wrong, that she was angry. He could see the look in her eyes, even if her expressions tried to hide it."What's wrong? Why are you like this?" he asked innocently.Amelia turned away and walked over to the table, reaching for Alexander's cell phone and dropping it in his lap."You sent someone to investigate me. " She replied and when he tried to retort, she cut him off. "There's
" Good morning!!!" Amelia said as soon as she entered Alexander's room that morning, perky and smiling. She was carrying a breakfast tray and didn't wear her usual nursing pajamas, opting instead for brown booties and a floral dress that left a soft cleavage on her small breasts."Why the excitement? " Alexander asked as he stretched, already showered and wearing a sweatshirt." Because we're going for a walk. " She answered, going to his closet. "I don't know about you, but I'm a little tired of these walls. She returned with a button-down shirt and jeans, as well as a pair of white sneakers."Okay, no more sweatshirts." Amelia said, putting the pieces on the bed. " I like these walls. " Alexander replied as he took a sip of coffee." They'll be in the same place when we get back. " She replied, taking the glass of juice from him as she sat down facing him."What are you up to, Jones?" He narrowed his blue eyes in suspicion.'Nothing, Mr. Alderidge. We're just going for a walk and
Amelia arrived at the office five minutes later. He noticed as soon as he entered, Alexander a little tense as he was accompanied by the analyst."So? How did it go?" Amelia asked the analyst, then rested her hand on Alexander's shoulder."It was good for the first day. " Dr. Campbell replied as she smiled."It was interesting. " It was Alexander's turn to speak.Amelia watched the two of them, already imagining that she would not be able to get more out of them than that, not least because it was a secret consultation."Well, Mr. Alderidge, can we schedule the next appointment for next week?" Doctor Campbell asked and Alex agreed with a nod.Amelia and Alexander got into the car and started it. She turned the car radio back on while Alexander watched the path they were following, which was the complete opposite of the house. Suspicious, he noticed Amelia's mischievous little smile as she tapped her fingers on the steering wheel." We're not going home. " he commented."We're not. " A
"Have you known each other long enough?" Amelia asked as she walked Alex through the park. She was still carrying the stuffed penguin in her arms." Yes, he was Megan's friend. " Alex replied without much prompting. She realized that his expression was closed and irritated." Ah... " she let slip. " And you don't like each other very much it seems.... " Amelia commented, slowly investigating." Shall we change the subject? I'm hungry and would love a sausage with plenty of mustard. " He said, heading over to the sausage stand.Amelia agreed, but was not convinced and would get into that later. She followed Alexander and reached into her purse for her wallet afterwards."Two sausages and two soft drinks. " She asked the attendant, smiling at her." Aren't you going to let me pay? " Alex asked, crossing his arms." In theory, you're paying. I'm using your money. " Amelia commented as she winked at him." So if I'm paying, I want a beer. " He replied, looking at the attendant."You can'
hey crossed the Plaza's great hall as everyone stared at them. Amelia felt her cheeks flush immediately and held Alexander's arm tightly. "Amelia, you're digging your nails in.... " he muttered in a pained tone. She loosened her grip, turning her eyes to Alex."Sorry. Everyone's watching. " she commented, feeling his hand rest on her back, just above her hip."It's all right. Don't worry. " He replied, kissing her hair."I'm sorry. I was supposed to be calming you down, not the other way around. " She said, then met Alex's gaze with sympathy."Don't worry," he whispered in her ear. "They're watching because I'm walking next to the most beautiful woman in this room.Amelia smiled, shaking her head negatively. She walked beside him, terribly annoyed by the people staring at them. She wished she could tell them to look somewhere else.In the distance, Ethan and Benjamin walked towards them, the former visibly shocked and moved as he hugged his older brother."Alex, for God's sake. " he
Amelia still couldn't believe that Alex was actually walking. Inside the car, she caught herself looking at him a few times. She trailed her fingers up his thigh until she reached his hand and held it, entwining her fingers in his lovingly."Is everything all right?" Alex asked, feeling a certain pressure from her grip on his fingers."Yeah, I just... I can't believe you're walking, Alex. " she replied, her green eyes fixed on his blue ones.Amelia brought her free hand to the man's cheek, caressing it."And I can't believe you've kept it from me for so long either. " she complained, looking at him slightly hurt."We all have secrets, don't we?" Alex replied, feeling Amelia loosen her grip on his fingers and then release his hand."Yes, we do. " She replied, turning her attention to the car window, watching the city lights. When the car pulled up in front of the Plaza, where the ball was to be held, Amelia felt particularly insecure at the sight of all those photographers at the gate,
Sabine left Amelia at the triplex, leaving Alexander's card on a table in the entrance hall. She then said goodbye and left the place.Amélia walked through the apartment, going to the mirror near the stairs that led to the second floor. The dress she was wearing was a very light shade of pink, all silk with a structured bodice and a subtle V-neckline, which gave volume to her small breasts. It followed a structure down to her waist and the skirt was completely loose, with a long slit. Her hair was shorter, just above her shoulders, as she had always wanted and Barth had always forbidden. Her make-up highlighted her big green eyes and her pink lips took on a soft red hue.She looked as stunning as she had ever looked.Distracted, Amelia rested her hand on her stomach, stroking it gently."Amelia? Oh my God! "Helena's voice snapped her out of her brief trance as she entered the room. "You look spectacular!Amelia smiled, walking elegantly in a pair of heeled sandals while showing off
As soon as dawn broke, Amelia got ready and went downstairs to the first floor. She took advantage of the cool morning to go to Central Park. It was the first time she had been to the park since moving to New York and then to the Hamptons. After stopping at a coffee shop and buying a chocolate Frappuccino, she went to the lawn and sat down, enjoying the sunny morning.Amelia took the opportunity to read a little, but was soon distracted when her attention was stolen by a mother and her baby. A beautiful little boy with blond hair and rosy cheeks was running awkwardly with his chubby legs across the lawn. He laughed as he ran towards his mother, being hugged as she kissed his cheeks.Without realizing it, Amelia rested her hand on her own belly as she touched it. She could feel it getting a little bigger, wondering if in a while it would be her there, playing with her baby. Amelia felt more and more certain about her pregnancy. But she didn't know if she could go on lying to Alexande
Ethan fetched a champagne from the cellar so they could toast, calling Mr. and Mrs. Smith to toast with them. Lunch was ordered from the nearby Plaza Hotel restaurant and everyone gathered in the living room. Mrs. Smith returned from the kitchen with the glasses and distributed them among everyone present while Ethan began serving them. When it was Amelia's turn to be served, she didn't even have time to answer when Helena, Alexander and Benjamin spoke in unison a no, leaving not only Amelia startled but also Mr. Smith."I don't drink, Mr. Alderidge. " She replied completely ungraciously, not understanding why Alexander had said no as well."You are officially my sister-in-law, so call me Ethan. " He said as he smiled, turning his attention back to Helena. "Lena, can you get some juice for Amelia to toast with us?" he said.Helena smiled, reaching for Amelia's glass and heading into the kitchen. Mrs. Smith returned a few minutes later with a glass filled with orange juice. They to
Amelia gazed at the decor of the entrance hall in delight. It was all white walls with wooden furniture. A central staircase led to the upper floors and the windows went from floor to ceiling, showing the entire Central Park. Amelia walked around the place completely amazed. It was the most beautiful house she had ever entered."What do you think?" Alexander asked, noticing his wife's sparkling eyes."It's wonderful, Alex. " She replied, walking over to him." Come, I want to show you another place. " He spoke, guiding the wheelchair down the first corridor and stopping in front of a mahogany double door. " Open it. " he asked.Amelia stared at him uncomprehendingly, but obeyed.Opening the door, Amelia's jaw dropped at the sight of the residence's library. With shelves and shelves of books that were lost, as well as a fireplace and comfortable armchairs with a view of Central Park. She entered in wonder, like a child in a toy store. "What do you think?" he asked, crossing his arms
Alexander was in his room when Amelia returned from "lunch" with her older brother. He had spent much of the afternoon thinking about all the information Helena had given him. How could someone as young as her go through so much terror over the years? More than ever, he wanted to protect her from the world. And more than ever, he loved her. She was an exceptional woman, so full of courage despite everything, and she still carried that burden. The baby of the man she hated. But if Amelia was willing to raise and love that child, he would do the same. He would protect not only her, but also their future child."May I come in? " Amelia asked as she knocked on the door, bringing Alex out of his thoughts."Yes, Amy. Come in. " He replied, turning his attention back to the door.He looked at Amelia, trying to notice some sign of her pregnancy, but to no avail. However, he couldn't deny that Amelia was looking brighter, prettier. More than usual."How was lunch?" he asked, resigning himse
Alexander looked at Helena completely in shock, feeling his face immediately heat up with frustration and fury."No... It's not possible. " He said as a thousand things went through his mind."She tricked me! She lied to me!" He shouted furiously, picking up the glass that was on the countertop and throwing it at the wall.Helena shielded herself in fear of him." Alexander!!! " She warned him, she never called him by his name." Helena, she got close to me, she made me fall in love with her to deceive me!!! " He shouted. " He shouted. " Just like Megan tried!" You are being unfair! " She retorted. " Amelia is not like Megan, she never was. " She claimed. " Amelia didn't know she was pregnant, for God's sake!" How can you say that? We know nothing about her! About her life, she always hid it!" He shouted completely upset."Because she had her reasons! You have no idea what this girl went through to get to this house, and I will not allow you to jump to conclusions. " She said, raisi
As the weeks went by, Amelia was assisted more by Helena, who helped her with everything possible during the pregnancy, but still kept it a secret from Alexander. Alexander, for his part, was getting more and more involved with the company's work that was coming in little by little. It was a long process that his therapist had proposed, but it was remarkable how he was gradually regaining part of his life. When he wasn't in the office working and Amelia was keeping him company, he was with Adam behind closed doors and always left dripping with sweat, but apparently satisfied.Amelia's belly was beginning to show the first signs. She was tall and thin, it wouldn't be hard to tell soon that she was pregnant and that worried him a lot.Soon she would no longer be able to hide her pregnancy from Alexander and she needed to prepare for the day when she would tell him everything. That morning, Amelia went to the office where Alex was already working. Unlike her nursing pajamas, this time
