“I’m divorcing you, Lacey.”

Cloud 9. Since the day she said ‘I do’ to Thomas, Lacey Thalmes had been on cloud 9. And she never wanted to leave. Today made it six months since she got married, and to some people, that might not seem like much, but to Lacey, it signified a lot of things.

First, it was longer than her parents’ marriage, which had lasted four weeks. It had been an elopement that ended with her dad running off after finding out her mum was pregnant. Second, it gave Lacey a chance to bite back at all the people who called her crazy for getting married so young. She’d found out later that some of her classmates made a bet that the marriage wasn’t going to last up to a year. Lacey couldn’t wait to prove them wrong.

Crazy was jumping off a helicopter, trusting that a parachute was going to make you land safely on the ground; crazy was going swimming with sharks. As for love, that wasn’t crazy, but if it turned out that it was, Lacey was glad she had that gift.

“Sometimes it feels like someone’s going to pinch me awake from this dream,” Lacey whispered to herself as she wriggled her finger, her finger which wore her wedding ring, in front of the mirror.

For their six month anniversary, their plan was to keep things simple. It obviously hadn’t been Lacey’s plan. Left to her, she would throw a big party and invite all their friends, but Thomas had recently gotten the role of a male lead in a series directed by an acclaimed director and beside an A-list actress, and he came home tired often.

“Perfect dinner, check. Romantic, but personal dinner setting, check. Dessert, check. Second dessert.” Giggling to herself as she thought of the little surprise she had prepared for Thomas after dinner, Lacey took a picture of the setting, and sent it to Thomas with multiple heart emojis.

There was no response, but she wasn’t expecting one anyway. A quick glance at the time told her Thomas would be home in less than five minutes.

Five minutes later, the sound of the door keypad alerted Lacey to Thomas’s presence. She stood from the sofa, and walked to the door to welcome him.

“Welcome home, babe. Happy anniversary.” Not minding that he was sweaty, she kissed his cheek, then planted a full kiss on his lips. “I’ve been thinking of you all day.”

Waiting for Thomas to kiss her back like he always did, Lacey’s smile dropped when that didn’t happen. It was only then she took a proper look at her husband. His clothes were wrinkled like he’d been rolling around all day, but more importantly, he wasn’t smiling. There wasn’t even a hint of excitement in his eyes.

“Babe?” Lacey’s eyes went round with concern. Her hands went up in a soft touch on both sides of Thomas’ face. “Did something happen at work?”

Placing his hands on Lacey’s shoulder, Thomas stared into her eyes for three seconds, before completely moving away from her touch. “Hmm.” Coming out of the doorway, he was heading to their room, when he suddenly stopped.

“What is that?”

Thomas’ voice didn’t hold any emotion, but Lacey’s excitement was still at about seventy perfect. All she wanted was to see Thomas’ pleased face after hearing how much effort she put into the dinner. Running to close the gap, Lacey threw an arm around her husband’s waist.

“Do you like it? I made your favorites, including dinner.” After saying this, Lacey went on her tiptoes, so she could whisper this in Thomas’ ears, “If you’re good to me, I’ll be really good to you later.”

Thomas had always been affectionate and often told Lacey that her hugs after a long day always had a relieving effect on him, so it took Lacey by surprise when Thomas, for the second time that day, pushed her away from him. It was all the confirmation Lacey needed that something wasn’t right.

“Right?” The concern in her voice also showed on her face. “Talk to me.”

“It’s…” With a strange look that might have been annoyance, Thomas regarded Lacey quietly. “I’m tired, okay? I’m just going to go to bed. Sorry. I’ll make it up to you later.” A whisper of a kiss was placed on Lacey’s forehead before Thomas disappeared to the room.

For a minute after that, Lacey stood unmoving where she was. She was blinking furiously, willing the tears to go back, and her clogged throat to free up. The whirring of the air conditioner and the low sound coming from the television seemed to be mocking her.

“You could have at least eaten a little.”

Her excitement had disappeared at that point. With a sigh, Lacey opened up her social media account, the one she opened mainly to be a part of Thomas’ twenty thousand followers, and posted the picture she took earlier. Six months anniversary. I love you even more, babe.

The dinner lay on the table uneaten. Later, Lacey would pack up all the ones that could be refrigerated, but for now, she settled on lying on the ground. This was the first time Thomas had acted so cold to her. He was busy, Lacey understood that, but he could have at least hugged her back. Her sigh was heavy.

Lacey planned to discuss her feelings with Thomas, but when she woke up on the ground the next day, Thomas was long gone, only leaving behind a note. {I’ll be gone for a while. After filming ends, I’ll be back}

Thomas being an actor, this wasn’t a strange occurrence.

A month went by, then two, and there was still no news from Thomas. If it weren’t for the regular updates on his social media and the occasional lives, Lacey would have assumed something had happened to him. It was even worse to only have access to her husband through social media, but Lacey couldn’t tell anyone.

It was two and a half months after Thomas left home that Lacey found out that the series he had been filming had finally been released. It was through her phone blowing up with messages from friends and old classmates, but still, there was absolute silence from the person Lacey wanted to hear from the most. A quick check of his social media showed a crazy increase in the number of his followers.

When Lacey finally heard from Thomas, it wasn’t what she expected to hear at all.

“I’m divorcing you, Lacey.”

Thomas’s words were flat. If one was asked to point out the difference between his tone and that of a weatherman reading out the difference, they would find it hard to do so.

Lacey doesn’t say anything. In a situation such as the one she found herself in, what was the right way to react? Was there even one? For one’s husband to be away from his wife without any personal news, only to find out he’s planning to divorce you…What was the reaction here? With her phone still to her ear, Lacey started to count down the seconds as they passed. Maybe if she didn’t say anything, Thomas would reveal that it was all a joke, and he was on his way home. Maybe. “Lacey? Lacey?! Did you hear me? I filed for divorce last week, but it was delayed because the papers weren’t ready. Be sure to sign it and send it back as soon as possible.”Up until then, Lacey had listened quietly. Her silly wish for it to all be a joke didn’t look like it was going to come true. “Why?” Resignation filled Lacey. Even though she wanted to scream at Thomas and order him to come home that moment, all that left Lacey’s lips was that one word question. “Why are you doing this, Thomas?”Out of the

What a sick joke. Now was the time for Thomas to jump out from behind the curtains, yelling ‘surprise!’ Lacey’s laughter had subsided. Not because she felt calm, but because she knew if she continued, she would end up crying. And Lacey only cried when she was sad. At that moment she was devastated, but she wasn’t sad. She couldn’t be sad. Manipulate… crazy… safety… left… divorce. Thomas’ words from the press conference were stuck in Lacey’s head in fragments. “Thomas got a divorce because I’m a cheater and a manipulator.” Lacey repeated those words over and over, thinking that if she did that, they would actually become real. Or maybe she was a cheater and just didn’t realize it. A manipulator too. Or else, why would Thomas say she was those things?Where Lacey was on the floor, she put her head to the ground. There was nothing to do. If she called her friends, they would only try to comfort her. Maybe some of them were laughing at her situation. Scrolling through social media was o

“Call us if you need anything.”After one last group hug, Lacey’s friends got up and left. Sangah lingered by the door for a few seconds, even after Adi and Maddy were gone. “None of this is your fault.”Those parting words did nothing to soothe Lacey’s heartache, but she forced on a smile for her friend’s sake. With all of them gone, Lacey pulled herself up from the ground and went into hers and Thomas’ room. Well, it was just her room now. It was already 3 in the afternoon, but Lacey hadn’t had her bath yet. From when Thomas called her, up until this point, about five hours had gone by. Moving on autopilot, Lacey didn’t put in a lot of effort as she took a quick bath, nor did she pay any mind to the clothes she wore. The thought of carrying on as if her life hadn’t just been disrupted made her want to puke. It was at 3:48 that the doorbell rang. Lacey knew the specific time because she had been scrolling through her gallery, looking at pictures of her and Thomas. The sound made h

“Lace. Lace.”Lacey woke up to someone shaking her. Her eyes seemed to have been shut close. A crick in her neck caused her to groan as she opened her eyes with some effort. There was also a hint of headache.Maddy was on her knees next to her. When did she arrive? “Was going to let you sleep, but that position looks uncomfortable. Did you have a good sleep?”“Hmm.” Lacey could say it was a good sleep because she didn’t dream of anything. Looking towards the open curtains, the sky outside had darkened. “When did you get here? How long was I asleep for?” She asked, sitting upright. To the left then to the right, Lacey twisted her neck to try to shake out the crick. Maddy tapped on her phone once before answering. “Just after 9 p.m. I got here twenty minutes ago. What time did you sleep?”Although she didn’t specifically have a time for when she fell asleep, Lacey knew that Thomas and Eliza left around 4, and her manager called a few minutes later. It wouldn’t have taken her long to en

Lacey stood to the side as Adi made a mess of her wardrobe. Not really a mess, but clothes were flying left and right, while Adi made occasional commentary like, ‘Nope’ or ‘Why the hell do you have this?’As a smart choice, Lacey refrained from revealing that most of her clothes were stuff Thomas liked or bought for her. Really, she’d never had any reason or thought of impressing any man but him. As for dressing up for herself, it wasn’t something Lacey took great interest in. Her fashion taste was limited to throwing on a simple outfit of jeans and tee, and carrying on with her day. But according to Adi, that wasn’t going to cut it anymore. “Seriously.” Adi let out a fully-loaded sigh, shooting a glare at Lacey. “There’s nothing to wear.”That could be said to be a half-truth. Sure, there were tons of clothes, but a lot of the fancy ones were bought by Thomas, and if she had to wear a dress bought by him to what was meant to be a party to forget him, then Lacey would rather stay at

TWO YEARS LATER.“If anyone has any reason why these two shouldn’t be joined together in matrimony, speak now or forever—”The priest hadn’t even finished reading his part when someone in the congregation cried out, “I do!” and a woman rushed forward. Her face was hidden behind a facemask, but what people could see of her dolled-up hair and the luxurious clothes she had on, this was no ordinary woman. She’d been patiently waiting for this moment ever since the wedding began, and now, it was time for the show. “They absolutely cannot get married!” The woman yelled, her voice filling the now-quiet hall. A pin drop could be heard in the silence. “Daphne, do you recognize me?”Unexpectedly, to the surprise of the wedding guests, the bride, who was called Daphne, suddenly burst into tears. Nodding ferociously, she replied, to the hearing of everyone, “I do, but I don’t know how you found me.”The woman grabbed Daphne’s hand as she faced the congregation of guests. “Everyone, the reason Da

“And how did you feel hearing those words?”Following Adi’s revelation, Lacey closed her eyes, transporting back to her third therapy session. The first two sessions had served as a sort of introduction, and trying to get comfortable with each other. The third time was when her therapist finally asked her about Thomas. “Betrayed. I guess you could also say I was bamboozled. It was like someone yanked the rug from under my feet, making me lose my footing.”Lacey’s therapist, Diane Cross, was a woman in her early fifties. She always had a smile and the right words, and asked the right questions. Diana had scribbled on her notepad, before meeting Lacey’s gaze again calmly. “Do you blame yourself for it?”“Yes.” Lacey’s response was without hesitation. “If I had been a little more spontaneous and less rigid, if I had been easier to approach, Thomas would have been more open about his real feelings.”Diana hummed softly, writing something down. “Tell me, Lacey, do you actually believe th

Shock was a gross understatement to what Jonathan felt as he watched the unexpected scene unfold right in front of him. Maybe it was really destiny that made him make a stop at the deli, or else how would he have found out that his younger brother’s girlfriend was two-timing him?“Could it be a different person? Someone that looks exactly like the picture Mum showed me? Someone that has an uncanny resemblance to the woman from the party?”Jonathan shook the thought out of his head. Of course it was her. He was willing to bet his most priceless property that it was. The hair was a different color and length than the one she had in the picture his mother took, but wigs existed for a reason. The woman, whose name he still didn’t know, and the man were now picking out a few things from what was displayed in the deli store. Jonathan’s earlier thought that they might be siblings was also put down quickly, seeing how the two people were joined at the hips and kept laughing at what the other

The next day, when Maddy got to the school, Maria’s signed consent form was sitting at her desk. It was at the same time it clicked that she had forgotten to call Maria’s guardian back the day before. So as not to forget, Maddy made a reminder on her phone. Maddy’s classes that day turned out to be not as active as she would have liked them to be, and for the most part, it was her fault. Her thoughts were preoccupied with seeing that man again. Maddy blamed herself for the confidence that she would never see him again. Coward. Sure, she was a coward. A coward who was going to protect her daughter, a coward who doesn’t want another party to come into their lives and disrupt it. He’s not just another party. He’s Lea’s father. “Miss Meadows?”Like her eyes just cleared up, Maddy saw two students standing in front of her. Their faces were full of worry. “Are you okay, Miss Meadows? The blue envelope stared at Lacey from the table in her room. After returning home last night, she’d found it in her mailbox and left it untouched since then. Although Lacey was yet to open it, it was clear by the floral design of the envelope that this was an invitation of some sorts…Most likely a wedding invitation. Speaking of weddings, after the day Adi revealed to Lacey that he found out her ex-husband, Thomas, was engaged to the woman he left her for, Eliza, Lacey hadn’t spared it another thought. Until now.Seeing the envelope, Lacey could only wonder whether Thomas sent her an invitation. If that was the case, then he was crazy if he thought she was going to attend. Those few seconds thinking about Thomas filled Lacey with annoyance, causing her to remember what happened yesterday at the deli. Meeting Piano Man and him being one of her client’s brothers had definitely not been on her bingo card for the year. Also, he didn’t remember. Lacey had tried to see if there was any

Even when a hairstylist ran forward to slightly fix Adi’s hair, the shutter of the camera didn’t let up. An eternity later, the shoot was over, allowing Adi to breathe a satisfied sigh. He’d been there since the early hours of the morning, and now, the sun had gone home. “Adi?”As he came out of the changing room, Adi found Grace crouching in a squat.
