Lacey stood to the side as Adi made a mess of her wardrobe. Not really a mess, but clothes were flying left and right, while Adi made occasional commentary like, ‘Nope’ or ‘Why the hell do you have this?’
As a smart choice, Lacey refrained from revealing that most of her clothes were stuff Thomas liked or bought for her. Really, she’d never had any reason or thought of impressing any man but him. As for dressing up for herself, it wasn’t something Lacey took great interest in.
Her fashion taste was limited to throwing on a simple outfit of jeans and tee, and carrying on with her day. But according to Adi, that wasn’t going to cut it anymore.
“Seriously.” Adi let out a fully-loaded sigh, shooting a glare at Lacey. “There’s nothing to wear.”
That could be said to be a half-truth. Sure, there were tons of clothes, but a lot of the fancy ones were bought by Thomas, and if she had to wear a dress bought by him to what was meant to be a party to forget him, then Lacey would rather stay at home.
“Should we just order one right now?” Maddy poked her head through the door, not fully inside the room. “Or I could lend Lacey one of mine,” she offered.
Adi looked like he couldn’t believe what he just heard. “Absolutely not! We’re not sending Lacey to a rebound party…”
“It’s not a rebound party.”
“... in one of your dresses, Mads. She has to wear her own clothes; that’s the rule.”
Grumbling something about what a silly rule that was, Maddy disappeared. Left alone again with Adi, Lacey watched him flop onto her bed. “Should we order something online?”
The disgruntled look on Adi’s face as he tapped through his phone made a smile cross Lacey’s face. Without thinking about it, Lacey threw her arms around him, hugging him tightly. “I love you so much.” In the few minutes Adi spent looking through her closet, Lacey was thoroughly entertained. She saw how much Adi was trying to make it good for her, and didn’t take that for granted.
“Well, duh,” was Adi’s response, but he leaned into her hug.
After pulling away, Lacey sat on the ground, legs folded and facing Adi. Maybe it was the need to feel ‘grounded’, but the floor had become the place she settled on. “This party…Do we really have to dress up all fancy? I understand you wanting me to be the belle of the party, but I would rather not wear a dress, okay? Having fun in casual clothes sounds like a lot of fun right now.”
The kinds of parties Adi went to differed a lot, so it was hard to tell what flew and what didn’t.
“Maybe the guy I’ll meet doesn’t like women in dresses.” Lacey said that as a joke, but Adi looked like he was seriously considering it.
“Hmm.” Adi gave it some thought, and reached a conclusion that Lacey was onto something. “Fine, but I still get to choose your clothes.” Seeing Adi eye her from head to toe, Lacey laughed. “Seriously, Lace. You’re a fashion criminal.”
“Have we decided on something?” Maddy was back.
At 10:55 p.m., the three of them tumbled out of Lacey’s house, and were on their way to the party in Lacey’s car, but with Adi driving. Lacey was in a crocheted dress that she ordered on a whim a few years back but had never worn. How Adi managed to find it in the depth of her closet, she wasn’t sure.
Twenty-seven minutes later—Due to uneasiness, Lacey kept count of the time passing—they arrived at the party location. It was more than Lacey was expecting.
Suddenly Lacey felt underdressed, regretting that she asked them to go casual. If only Adi mentioned the party was going to be at a freaking mansion, she would have worn something fancy. No, scratch that. If Lacey had known that party was being held at such a fancy mansion-esque house, she would never have come.
“You’re not getting cold shoulders, are you?” Adi’s voice came from close to her ears. “Trust me not to bring you to an uncomfortable place. Plus, if at any point, you’re no longer having fun, then, we’ll leave.”
“Right.” With that assurance, Maddy came from the side, and hooked her arm with Laceys’.
Inside was nothing like Lacey expected. Not the interior, which was exactly what you would expect a mansion to look like. But it was the guests that surprised Lacey. For some reason, what she expected to see was a pretentious group of people just lounging about with drinks in their hands, judging one another silently, but the reality couldn’t be more far off.
With only about twenty people present, it was easy to tell by their interaction that they knew each other and liked each other.
It was the piano that held Lacey’s attention. Particularly, the man who was playing a soft rendition of the happy birthday song.
“Do you play?” The sudden deep voice by her left side gave Lacey a start. All the while, she thought Maddy was next to her, but upon further inspection, she found her best friend was already at the table arranged with food. Thankfully, Adi was still beside her.
With a laugh, Adi introduced the strange man, who had a roguish smile on his face. His distinctive features place him as Asian.
“Lacey, this is Ian Jung, the birthday boy. Don’t let that face deceive you. He turns thirty today.”
“Adi, come on, don’t scare her off like that,” Ian joked. “Nice to meet you, Lacey. Are you into crochet? My younger sister thinks everyone who likes crochet is cool. And I agree with her.” Ian directed a nod at her dress. “I hope you have a good time. Don’t fade into the background, alright?”And with that, Ian left to greet other guests.
“I’m going to say hi to a few friends. I saw you eyeing the piano earlier; go for it.” With a wink, Adi was gone.
It’d been a while since Lacey played, so the thought was tempting, but wouldn’t it be weird to walk up to a total stranger and ask them to move aside for her? Lacey thought so. Still, she moved closer to the front of the piano, where the man was still playing softly.Up till then, Lacey only had a view of his back. Noticing someone was watching him, the man raised his head, his stunning, piercing grey eyes meeting Lacey’s gaze. Now gifted with a view of this beautiful face, it was hard to look away. All the while, his fingers still gently strummed the keys of the piano.
TWO YEARS LATER.“If anyone has any reason why these two shouldn’t be joined together in matrimony, speak now or forever—”The priest hadn’t even finished reading his part when someone in the congregation cried out, “I do!” and a woman rushed forward. Her face was hidden behind a facemask, but what people could see of her dolled-up hair and the luxurious clothes she had on, this was no ordinary woman. She’d been patiently waiting for this moment ever since the wedding began, and now, it was time for the show. “They absolutely cannot get married!” The woman yelled, her voice filling the now-quiet hall. A pin drop could be heard in the silence. “Daphne, do you recognize me?”Unexpectedly, to the surprise of the wedding guests, the bride, who was called Daphne, suddenly burst into tears. Nodding ferociously, she replied, to the hearing of everyone, “I do, but I don’t know how you found me.”The woman grabbed Daphne’s hand as she faced the congregation of guests. “Everyone, the reason Da
“And how did you feel hearing those words?”Following Adi’s revelation, Lacey closed her eyes, transporting back to her third therapy session. The first two sessions had served as a sort of introduction, and trying to get comfortable with each other. The third time was when her therapist finally asked her about Thomas. “Betrayed. I guess you could also say I was bamboozled. It was like someone yanked the rug from under my feet, making me lose my footing.”Lacey’s therapist, Diane Cross, was a woman in her early fifties. She always had a smile and the right words, and asked the right questions. Diana had scribbled on her notepad, before meeting Lacey’s gaze again calmly. “Do you blame yourself for it?”“Yes.” Lacey’s response was without hesitation. “If I had been a little more spontaneous and less rigid, if I had been easier to approach, Thomas would have been more open about his real feelings.”Diana hummed softly, writing something down. “Tell me, Lacey, do you actually believe th
Shock was a gross understatement to what Jonathan felt as he watched the unexpected scene unfold right in front of him. Maybe it was really destiny that made him make a stop at the deli, or else how would he have found out that his younger brother’s girlfriend was two-timing him?“Could it be a different person? Someone that looks exactly like the picture Mum showed me? Someone that has an uncanny resemblance to the woman from the party?”Jonathan shook the thought out of his head. Of course it was her. He was willing to bet his most priceless property that it was. The hair was a different color and length than the one she had in the picture his mother took, but wigs existed for a reason. The woman, whose name he still didn’t know, and the man were now picking out a few things from what was displayed in the deli store. Jonathan’s earlier thought that they might be siblings was also put down quickly, seeing how the two people were joined at the hips and kept laughing at what the other
Jonathan didn’t respond to the woman’s suggestion to call Steven. If his brother found out he was being cheated on, it would break his heart. Especially since Steven already introduced her to their parents. “I don’t care how you do it, but break up with my brother. This little secret,” As Jonathan spoke, he alternated between pointing at the woman and the man, “will be taken to the grave.”He didn’t wait for an answer because he didn’t need one. With a final glare directed at the woman, Jonathan got into his car. She remembered him. The sigh of relief had already left Jonathan before he could catch himself. There was nothing to be relieved or happy about. The little information he had about this woman already told him she was nothing but trouble. It didn’t matter if she was his first kiss, it was better for her to stay far away from him. And Steven too. “You’re home.” Steven was in the kitchen when Jonathan got home. Hearing the sound of the keycode, his younger brother came out. “
“A kiss for you. Then a kiss for me.”Madeleine—Maddy—Meadows bent at the knees to kiss her four-year old daughter, Lea, then turned her cheek to give Lea a chance to kiss her back. This was their ritual every morning on the days Maddy had her daughter. The arrangement with Maddy’s parents meant she had her daughter for the weekend—Friday night to Monday morning. For the rest of the week, Maddy’s parents watched Lea. After she found out she was pregnant, Maddy was reluctant about keeping the baby, since she was certain that the possibility of her meeting the father again was practically zero, given that they met on a different continent, and also then, the thought of raising a child at 20 felt daunting and not something Maddy wanted. To this day, she was grateful to her parents for offering to take care of the child if she ended up keeping the pregnancy. Maddy didn’t know what she would do without her baby girl. “Have a beautiful day, my princess,” Maddy called out to her daughter
“Adi, this time, give me some free poses that scream natural. You want to sell that these clothes are classy and comfortable.” Snapping sounds filled the air as a photographer called out instructions to Adi. Even when a hairstylist ran forward to slightly fix Adi’s hair, the shutter of the camera didn’t let up. An eternity later, the shoot was over, allowing Adi to breathe a satisfied sigh. He’d been there since the early hours of the morning, and now, the sun had gone home. “Adi?”As he came out of the changing room, Adi found Grace crouching in a squat. He still had makeup on and the hair was untouched; the only thing that had changed was that he was now in his regular clothes. “Yeah?” Grace was Adi’s friend who was also a model, but for that day, she was Adi’s escort and moral support. “There’s an event happening this evening. A restaurant soft launch. You interested?”The shoot had taken most of the day, but Adi already expected that. It was for a luxury men clothing brand tha
“Great job, everyone. Let’s work even harder during the official launch.”After the last of his staff left, Liam stuck around to do a quick closing checklist. The lights, the sink, the restrooms, he checked to make sure everything was in order before leaving. After locking up, he scanned his environment, then took out his phone where he was at the entrance of his restaurant. Upon his request, the guests today had filled out a feedback form, so Liam took his time going through every single one of them, noting the areas they found good and those they found lacking. Back in Italy, owning a restaurant had been one of his dreams, but now that he’d made that dream a reality, Liam wasn’t exactly sure how to feel. With a degree from a renowned culinary school and his work experience at a couple world-class restaurants, Liam had sufficient expertise under his belt. Still, he felt something was lacking. A few of the guests had already made posts about his restaurant and tagged him. Liam drop
The blue envelope stared at Lacey from the table in her room. After returning home last night, she’d found it in her mailbox and left it untouched since then. Although Lacey was yet to open it, it was clear by the floral design of the envelope that this was an invitation of some sorts…Most likely a wedding invitation. Speaking of weddings, after the day Adi revealed to Lacey that he found out her ex-husband, Thomas, was engaged to the woman he left her for, Eliza, Lacey hadn’t spared it another thought. Until now.Seeing the envelope, Lacey could only wonder whether Thomas sent her an invitation. If that was the case, then he was crazy if he thought she was going to attend. Those few seconds thinking about Thomas filled Lacey with annoyance, causing her to remember what happened yesterday at the deli. Meeting Piano Man and him being one of her client’s brothers had definitely not been on her bingo card for the year. Also, he didn’t remember. Lacey had tried to see if there was any
“So, how was your date?”Steven had a huge grin on his face all through the day, so much that when school was over and he passed by the front of her desk, Maddy had to ask. Almost like he’d been waiting to ask, Steven immediately plopped onto the spare chair at Maddy’s table. “It was my first time officially being on a date, but we clicked so easily.”“Hmm.” Maddy cocked her head to the side with an amused smile. “Does that mean you’ve been on unofficial dates before?”As Steven’s laughter subsided, he noticed Maddy wasn’t her usual self. She was smiling, but there was a blank look in her eyes. So he asked, “Do you have something on your mind?” Turning her head towards her friend, Maddy groaned a bit before responding. “I think I have a date, but unlike you, I’m not too excited for it.”Today was the day she was meeting Liam Tirro, but without Lea. After much deliberation on the matter, Maddy decided not to introduce her daughter to her father just yet. There were a couple reasons,
Lacey quickly took in the presence of the three people standing at her door. She had been about to go into her room when she heard the sound of her keycode and went to check who it was. Since the only people who knew the code to her apartment were her mother and friends, she wasn’t all that surprised to find Sangah there. Except, there were two other people at the door. One face was unfamiliar, while the other person was a face Lacey seen earlier that day. Actually, he was the person she had wanted to reach out to the most. “Sangah, you’re back from South Korea?” “We flew in tonight. Holly and I were going to crash here. I thought you would still be at your Mum’s place.”Holly. Lacey’s eyes fell again on the beautiful woman whose arm was connected with Sangah’s elbow and smiled. Lacey took in her outfit of a flashy black dress and couldn’t help but wonder if she flew on the plane like that. “Holly?”“Holly.” Sangah turned a smile at the woman beside her. “Holly is my girlfriend. Ho
“Let’s meet. Where are you? Office? I’ll drop–”“Adam, you seem to have a lot of free time lately,” Jonathan interrupted the other man with a sharp tone. Recently, Jonathan had had more contact with the other man than he would have liked, and he didn’t want to see the other’s face for a while. Which was why he added, “Tell me what it is you’re calling about.”Given that he was calling so soon after Lacey’s post went up, Jonathan had an easy guess as to what Adam Rashidi wanted. A playful, buoyant laugh came over the phone right before Adam responded. “It’s always business with you, isn’t that right, Jonathan? Well, you must already have an idea why I called you…” This was followed by a small pause before Adam continued, “Lacey Thalmes, send her to me.”Resisting the urge to hang up the phone, Jonathan opened his mouth to speak but Adam beat him to it. “Your company seems to be doing a bad job at protecting their artists. Give her to me and I promise to make her more famous than JT En
The moment Lacey pressed the upload button and sent out her post into the world, she turned off her phone as a flurry of emotions hit her hard, the predominant ones being, of course, excitement and fear. She’d already given her friend group a heads-up of what she was about to do so they wouldn’t be too surprised if they came across her post. They were her friends so they would be on her side, but if what Jamie said was true, then the post was going to reach a lot more people. People who only knew her because of Thomas, people who didn’t know the real her, people who would be quick to write off her words as lies, and maybe also people who would believe her and be on her side. The enormity of the situation made Lacey want to shovel herself under the blankets, and stay in the room until it all blew over. Not on Jamie’s watch though. When Lacey was about to retreat back into the room, the other woman stopped her. She was the mastermind behind Lacey taking the decision to fight against
Jonathan’s car was idling at a distance not so far away from Lacey’s mother’s house. Lacey told him to leave, but he didn’t want this to be how things ended between them. He really was going to do everything he could to fix it. But how? After he sat in his car thinking for a while, his ringtone filled the car. It was Riley calling. Unexpectedly, when he answered, Riley immediately started speaking. Her words were jumbled into each other and Jonathan couldn’t make them out. “Slow down, Riley. What happened?”“Are you with Lacey Thalmes right now? What silly ideas did you put in her head, Jonathan? Huh?” Riley’s words came out hard and fast. She was ticked off. This made Jonathan pay closer attention. “Tell Lacey that she can come back to JT if she takes down the post right now!”At first, Jonathan had been confused, but he heard clearly now Riley’s last statement. “Wait a minute. Did you fire Lacey already? What the hell, Riley? Why are you doing things without my permission?” There
“Are you willing to fight?”It wasn’t the first time since meeting the woman that Lacey was left stunned, but this topped all those other moments. Jamie’s words made her heart beat faster. As part of it was from trepidation, but another part of it was the excitement that things could actually turn around. Jamie was right. If she let it go again this time, what was the assurance of a next time not happening? Would she have to spend the rest of her life looking back to make sure Thomas wasn’t catching up with her, ready to ruin her life one more time? In these past two years, he’d never been far from her though even after he was out of her life. Oh, is Thomas going to decide today to lie about me again? She had never fully stopped worrying about that. So, after a few moments of contemplation, Lacey came to a decision. Wearing a determined expression, she said, “I am going to fight. Thomas broke me once and almost ruined my life. I don’t want to let him do that again. But…” That was w
“Lacey, are you okay in there?” A knock on the door made Lacey look up from her phone. “What’s going on? Why is the door locked?”It was tempting to ignore her mother, but after the fainting scare earlier, she didn’t want to find her mother in another dangerous situation, so Lacey placed her phone on the bed and got to her feet. Unlocking the bolt, she opened the door. “Lacey, what’s wrong?”“Nothing, Mum. Just something came up at work. Don’t worry about it.”Lana Thalmes’ expression grew even more worried. “It’s something serious, isn’t it? Earlier, before Jonathan left, I heard you shout. Did he do something to you?”Lacey’s head swayed side to side. She wasn’t in the mood to answer her mother’s questions, what with her world and entire life being overturned for the second time in two years, and by the same person. Two years wasn’t a lot of time to most people, but in that span, Lacey had gone through a divorce, turned her life around and gotten a job, only to find herself back in
“Calm down, Adi. I can’t hear you,” Lacey said into the phone. She’d been having a chill time with Jonathan after he drove her and her mother home. They had been talking about random things, and somehow, it wasn’t weird that Jonathan was in her mother’s house. But then her phone rang, and it was Adi saying a lot of words she didn’t understand. “Lace, I asked where you were? Are you at JT Entertainment?”This time, she clearly heard him. With furrowed brows, Lacey responded, “No. Why? Do you need me to do something for you?”“No. No.” Adi’s voice sounded frantic. “It’s not that. It’s just…” As he hesitated, Lacey raised her gaze to see what Jonathan was up to on the other side of the room. Surprisingly, she found a grave expression on his face as he stared right at her. When he saw her looking his way, his features seemed to crumple in apology. Before Lacey could get confused about what was going on, she heard Adi’s voice through the phone. “What did Thomas do to you at the company?
It was a good thing Jonathan composed himself enough to ask Jamie if Lacey had been hurt. So when she told him it wasn’t Lacey who was rushed to the hospital, he didn’t hold back his breath of relief. Not that he was relieved about Lacey’s mother being hospitalized or anything. “Thank you, Jamie. I’ll be there as soon as I can.” As Jonathan hung up and put his phone away, his eyes fell on Riley who was still staring at him with that irritated expression, except now, her sneer was more pronounced. Jamie said she was leaving the hospital meaning Lacey would be by herself. For that reason, Jonathan wanted to get there as soon as he could. There was no time to find out what brought about Riley’s irritation with him. “Something came up, Riley. I have to leave now. I’ll talk to you later.”Jonathan was worried. “Will she want to see me? Am I overstepping by going there when she didn’t ask for me?” Those were the type of questions that filled his mind as he drove to the hospital. When La
