•CHAPTER TWO•
Confronting the aftermath
I guess ‘bumping or getting into an accident with someone understanding’ should be a prayer on its own..
‘Cause..
I'd really been apologising for the past three minutes but this tall arrogant dude wasn't ready to let go..
“Does it look like I care? When you knew how weak your financial strength is, why didn't you drive like a normal person? You're getting me a new car and that's final else I will charge this case to court” he threatened and for some seconds i was in awe..
For Pete's sake, the worst thing that happened to his car is the damage of his full light bulb and now…. court?!!
What has it gotten to do with that?...
I sighed in frustration.
“I just told you I'm sorry, can we please talk about fixing this. I can't afford a new car and this is not a crime, anyone gets into an accident” .. I was really getting pissed but trying hard to remain calm.
“Well, disobeying the traffic rules is a crime” he retorted.
I scoffed.
“If you aren't contented with me paying for your car's repair, then I'm sorry, you'll have to suit yourself” I finally lost my polite skills and spoke rudely with a careless shrug..
I can't keep begging in vain right?..
He scoffed..
“Have a nice day..” I added and proceeded to leave but he grabbed me by the arm and stopped me.
“Where do you think you're going?” his eyes darkened.
I exhaled, swiftly taking a look around.
“You're causing a scene, let go. I can't purchase you a new car because of a minor accident” I tried snatching my arm from him but damn.. this dude was much stronger.
“Then pay with a service" he was a bit calm this time.
I raised a brow.
Service?..
“Do I look like a delivery girl or a car washer or a —”
“Concord hotels, 9pm tonight" he cut me off before letting go of me roughly.
For a second.. just a second, I was confused and when I realised what he meant, I gasped.
“Are you..” I wanted to cuss but immediately, I remembered my intention to sabotage my wedding and my eyes widened.
Wait..
“Fuck, I could use him!!”
Perfect!
“I really could!” I smiled.
Oh heavens, everything's been working out well!
I was lost in my world of thoughts that I didn't know when he got into his car and drove off until his retreating car made a loud sound..
My lips curved into a grin..
“Plan has a good hope! I satisfy you, you satisfy me too”
I walked back to my car, ignoring the stares from others.
“Men's heterosexuality can be an advantage sometimes..” I smiled.
I pressed my lips together as I settled behind the steering wheels.
“I'm about to lose my virginity” a saddening thought crept in..
I ignited the car's engine with a deep exhale..
“At least it's better than marrying an old man.” I rolled my eyes..
I was definitely not going home. I wasn't ready to meet my so-called parents and so, I drove down to the mechanic shop, intending to go to the amusement park after my car's repair.
I'll be needing some refreshing moments before tonight's pain-pleasured fuck.
Oh yeah!..
A camera!
“I need to get that!”
•
~THE NEXT MORNING~
Was it the period of longer days and shorter nights or my exhaustive slumber after that pain-tinged, pleasure-filled night with Mr. Arrogant?.. Either way, morning arrived sooner than expected.
Damn, my middle was as sore as.. fuck!
Last night was something I didn't want to think of. That dude was a beast in bed!..
But I did it..
I just had to endure and release moans to make it look like an intentional intimacy since it was secretly being recorded.
I stretched my hand while still booting slowly like an old computer, but Mr arrogant wasn't on the bed and there were no sounds of the running faucet either..
“He's gone" I mumbled sleepily, stretching on the bed with a yawn..
“I don't need you anymore, anyways.." I grinned.
“The camera!" That was the echo from a voice in my head that kicked me out of the bed immediately.
Without hesitation, I threw off the duvet and rushed to the wardrobe, reaching for the camera I'd secretly placed on its top last night when Mr. arrogant was using the bathroom..
“Hmmph..” I exhaled deeply in satisfaction, pressing some buttons on the device..
All thanks to the room's dim light that was on during the intimacy, the video was certainly going to be clear enough.
I sucked in a deep breath, ignoring the voice that reminded me of how shameless it was to give a stranger my virginity..
“Well, well, well.. at least, it's to get a better life and cancel a shameful marriage” I told myself, transferring the record to my phone..
“I guess it's high time I gave love a chance, I'm definitely not allowing dad to choose for me after I get out of this mess” I thought again, slowly walking to the bed.
Without further ado, I cropped out the most convincing part of the video and sent it to the business group with the caption ‘Last night was cool babe’ to make it seem like I'd mistakenly sent it there..
“Now, let's see how you can marry me when shame and embarrassment envelopes you!” I smirked, putting off the phone after sending it before proceeding to the bathroom for a clean up..
I couldn't walk well due to the pain between my legs and of course, I didn't hesitate in muttering curse words to Mr arrogant.
“Let's not meet again, insane driver”
Those were his words while pounding mercilessly into me last night..
“We are never going to meet, cruel arrogant jerk. We've both used each other to get different forms of satisfaction!” I rolled my eyes, getting under the shower after turning on the faucet.
The sex video didn't capture his face but mine since he was above me and I was the one facing the camera so he was safe.
He had smirked when I showed up last night, arrogantly demanding for three rounds like it's a piece of cake.
Normally, I'd have given him a dose of his medicine for making such demands but because it was something I desperately wanted, I just had to keep succumbing to his annoying wills.
Eish..
I was done cleaning up in less than twenty minutes and then, I headed out of the hotel with the sole intention of heading to the museum where I worked as a librarian.
“My plan would have yielded a result before I return" I thought, still leaving the phone off..
I drove off to work immediately..
Nothing could be more relieving than being eighty percent done with the nerve wracking process of sabotaging your wedding..
Absolutely nothing!
As usual, work was boring and hectic, having to respond with the usual ‘Yes, we have that available, check the shelves for it’ after a particular book was being demanded but I managed to get my butt glued to that seat until 5pm, my closing hour..
“Don't tell me to calm down, this is the Ely consortium in question! How the hell do we settle a billion debt within seven days because of her actions!!” Dad's yell at mum welcomed me home.
I took a deep breath, standing right in front of the door and expecting more of the dialogue.
My plan was successful, yes?..
“Finally!” I breathed victoriously, raising my hand to the door's knob. But hey, I felt quite scared to go in..
“The marriage has been ruined, she ruined it and now, Gerald is terribly mad at me. How dare she send it to the group! Do you know what that means, even for me?!”
Dad's voice was terribly loud, perhaps because our neighborhood was void of sounds..
“Calm down honey, what if she was set up or even raped?”
That was mum.
I scoffed, remaining in my position.
“Are you insane?” Dad snapped
“ Obviously, in the video she forwarded, she did that act willingly. The moans, the caption and everything doesn't relates with rape! She had a lover all this while and you never knew!” he yelled.
“Oh please.." I scoffed.
Damn the idea dads do have to blame their wives for their children's actions.
I didn't wait anymore, I punched the door's password into it and walked in, bumping into dad's murderous gaze..
“Hi dad" I greeted, spreading my arms for a hug.
I needed to pretend to be unaware first right?..
“If those hands touch me, I promise to cut them off!" He threatened and I furrowed my brows, feigning innocence.
“Dad?.. what's wrong?.. ”
“Mum?..”
Oh sweet, I was a good actor!
“What did you do Adeline?” mum asked disappointedly..
“What are you–”
“Where were you all night!” Dad interrupted my saying.
“I worked overnight because we —” I had no idea when dad hit me hard across the face, flying me to the couch.
Fuck!!
“Are you insane?! How dare you lie to me? You spent the night with your lover in a hotel and had the guts to send the video to the business group where hundreds of partners and investors are and now the wedding is cancelled. How do I pay my debts!!" He thundered.
The hit made me grow wild.
“Oh Adeline, it's time to put this man in his place!” a voice whispered.
“So what?!.." I yelled back, slowly getting up from the couch.
Dad raised his brows.
“Were you expecting me to embrace the discovery that I was marrying an old man and not his son?! Tell me! You deceivers!” It was literally my first time yelling at my parents.
Mum looked so shocked and guilty but dad's expression didn't soften a bit.
I guess it's time to gather those savings in my offshore account and start my life because I'll definitely be getting disowned tonight.
I must!
I can't live with people like this else seeing them will keep reopening my scar.
“You think I'll watch you ruin my life, huh?! That old thing has no son and you lied to me. You shattered my dreams!” I yelled again..
“Adele.." mum whispered
“Sending the video was intentional, yes it was. I will definitely not marry someone who's lifespan has almost completely exhausted!" i confidently said to dad's face.
Breathlessness..
Dad remained silent but the hard expression persisted.
“The wedding is cancelled, it's time to pay the debts you owed to invest in some fraudulent activities that never worked out for you” I asserted, fighting back my tears.
“Do you think it's my joy to lose my virginity too, just like that!” I gulped.
And then, I raised my forefinger to his face..
“And before you disown me, I'll willingly strip your name off mine and leave your house tonight..” I proclaimed fiercely, letting our gaze lock for more seconds before heading to my room to get my bags..
I was definitely not spending any more night in here..
I was the victim here, how dare he hit me still?!
“Adele!” mum rushed after me..
But I wasn't ready to stop or listen to her.
I never planned this but some things just can't be controlled.
It's time to start my life..
.. after all, I was a 23-year old adult.
•CHAPTER THREE•Fiercely determined.. For the first time since morning, I turned on my phone, falling heavily on my bed to release my tears as I got to my room.Everything had happened so fast..So damn fast.Losing my marriage and virginity within twenty four hours was something I wouldn't have believed if I was told a day before..But then, it's all for good right?..“Adeline, you can't do this..” Mum walked in and i sighed.“I don't want to disrespect you mum, please leave” I muttered from where I was laid while the phone began beeping repeatedly.Annoying notifications…. Well I expected them anyway.“You are not leaving this house, are you?” her voice portrayed both fear and worry.I scoffed, sitting up. “Are you seriously asking me that?” I demanded bluntly.“Adele, your brother isn't in town and you know it. How do you expect us to be fine without having any of our children around? Consider my feelings please” mum pleaded. She couldn't dare scold me for what I did ’cause
•CHAPTER FOUR•Unexpected encounter..YEARS LATER.. Time flew faster than one's imagination and six years swung by as a blur..It's been six years since I walked away from it all and began a new life void of any dictatorship. The best thing I could whip out of my past was to channel all the hurt and disappointment into work, and here I was with a skyrocketing secretarial duty.“Mummy, it's my birthday!” Reid's scream over the phone made me cover my ears and chuckle.Right.. I had a five year old son – the product of my nightstand with Mr. arrogant whom I'd never met since we got intimate.. I could vividly remember, confirming my pregnancy six years ago was like a nightmare..‘I’m just trying to cope in a new country and now, a pregnancy?’ Those were the exact words I said to the doctor when he broke the news of my pregnancy… “You can't cope with this job like this, you're heavily pregnant and your consistent sleep makes your work so unprofessional..” Those were the words tha
5…Two-edged sword's stab “And what gives you the impression that only your dad has the same eye and hair colour as you, in this world!”That, with a cold voice and then a stern look was literally how Sarah reacted to my son's statement. At that same moment, the decoration workers inside her office rushed out immediately, leaving the office.Who can stand the wild Sarah Donalds?..She glared dangerously at Reid, making the little boy grab a handful of my cloth while trying to hold me tight in fright. My heart was still racing hard and my head was aching badly due to Mr. Arrogant sudden denial but …!How was I even supposed to affirm Reid's words of being his son when all I'm saying seems so strange to Mr arrogant?..When I have no evidence to back up all I knew about that night..?And in fact, Sarah's glares and cruel reactions?..Damn!.“You'll have to give him time” I told myself, feeling myself shivering slightly like I'd caught a cold flu.“No, Sarah, you don't talk to a little
On suspension Getting sacked has been all I'd been avoiding since I began working with Sarah. Even during the days I was so indisposed, my work had always been a priority simply because I believed it was one of the highest paying jobs in town and the only way I could give my son the best life I dreamed of..But now?..Fired?..Sarah had never uttered those words to me. She was either going to say ‘Do you want to get fired' or ‘Have you found yourself a new job already?..’But today was different and I knew she wasn't joking.I didn't hesitate falling on my knees.. Where was I supposed to go from here?..Getting fired literally means losing my official car and house. Oh damn, I wasn't ready to be homeless, not even in a thousand years to come.I'd used the incomes I got in the last few years to cater for myself and my son, as well as covering the costs of renewing my stay in this country since my stay was no longer tied to my employment at the museum so I had little savings to depen
7..Mum, are we in trouble?.. After so many attempts to convince Reid, he finally agreed to go shopping and enjoy the rest of his birth-day hours..Nanny Precious did most of the job while I sat in a corner, sipping a cup of drink for a very long while with my mind reeling with different thoughts. The worst thing was that I had no one to talk to nor get some advisory words from. I hadn't communicated with my family since I left also, so I was just alone.“I'm so tired” Reid yawned, hugging me from behind as I drove home.“We're almost home, okay?” I spoke to pretend like I wasn't deep in thoughts.“If dad was here, he'll do the driving while I sleep on your lap” he muttered, yawning again.I sighed, tightening my grip around the steering wheel.Reid talks about his father was getting too much these days and it was bothersome, especially now that his father was about to have his own family without any memory of us..“Even if he won't accept me, at least, he should accept Reid" I'd m
### Chapter 8 Adeline didn’t hesitate; she grabbed Reid’s hand, her fingers trembling but firm. “We’re leaving,” she said, her voice barely audible over the lump rising in her throat. Reid stared up at her, eyes wide, his cheeks streaked with tears. “Where are we going, Mum?” “Somewhere safe.” Her words were more of a promise to herself than to him. She refused to let despair take over, even as Precious clung tightly to Reid’s other hand, whispering soothing words in his ear. They walked past the men, Adeline keeping her gaze forward, pretending their piercing stares didn’t burn into her back. She felt naked without the car keys in her hand, without the home waiting for her just a few steps away. But this wasn’t the time to crumble. “Where will we sleep?” Reid’s question hung in the cold evening air as they rounded the corner, the building now out of sight. Adeline stopped. For a moment, her carefully crafted strength faltered, and the weight of their situation pressed h
Chapter 9 In-between the web I didn’t want to open the door. My hands trembled as I stared at it, the weight of my breathing filling the room. Alex being here didn’t make sense. He was supposed to be living his perfect life, far away from us. So why now? Precious stood behind me, clutching Reid, who had woken up, his small arms wrapped tightly around her neck. “Mum, who’s there?” he whispered, his voice barely audible but sharp enough to pierce my heart. I didn’t answer. My mind raced with possibilities, none of them good. If Alex was here, it wasn’t a coincidence. He had no idea where we were. At least, he shouldn’t have. Another knock, harder this time, echoed through the room. “Adeline, I know you’re in there.” His voice made my chest tighten. How long had it been since I’d heard it? Too long, yet not long enough. I swallowed the lump in my throat and gestured for Precious to stay back. “Mum—” “It’s fine,” I cut Reid off, though it was a lie. Nothing about this was
Chapter 10: on the RideThe knock reverberated through the cramped apartment, each thud like a countdown to disaster. My throat tightened as I stared at the door, my fingers curling into trembling fists. Alex. Why now? Why here? “Mum,” Reid’s small voice pulled me back. He rubbed his sleepy eyes, looking from me to Precious, who had gone as pale as a sheet. “It’s nothing, sweetheart,” I lied, forcing a smile. “Go back to sleep.” The knocking grew more insistent, and I motioned for Precious to take Reid into the bathroom. She nodded silently, scooping him up and shutting the door behind her. My heart pounded as I took a step toward the door, my bare feet feeling like lead weights. I hesitated, my hand hovering over the doorknob. Every instinct screamed at me to run, to hide. But there was no running from this. When I finally opened the door, Alex stood there, his face shadowed by the dim hallway light. His eyes, sharp and unrelenting, locked onto mine. “Adeline,” he said,
Chapter 44:The Thin Line Between Fear and ResolveThe silence of the house wasn’t comforting anymore. It was suffocating. Every creak of the floorboards, every hum of the fridge sounded like a warning, a reminder that peace was a luxury we couldn’t afford. Reid’s laughter from earlier that day still echoed in my ears, but now it felt distant, almost like a cruel memory of something I might lose. I stared at him as he slept, his tiny hand clutching the edge of his blanket. He looked so peaceful, so unaware of the storm that was circling us. I couldn’t sleep. My body refused to rest. Instead, I sat in the dim light of the living room, my legs folded under me on the couch, eyes fixed on the door. I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was coming. Alex was somewhere in the shadows, pacing like a restless predator. His movements were silent, but I could feel him. I hated that his presence both unsettled me and brought me a sliver of comfort. “You should get some rest,” he said
Chapter 43:The Last Step Before the Fall“Reid, get behind me!” I snapped, yanking him toward the wall as Alex stepped forward, gun in hand. The room felt too small, the walls closing in as heavy footsteps echoed outside. Alex’s eyes darted between me and the door, calculating every possible move, while Precious clutched the arm of the couch, frozen in place. “Stay quiet,” Alex whispered, his voice calm but laced with urgency. I could barely breathe. My pulse hammered in my ears, and every second felt like an eternity. Reid clung to my leg, his tiny fingers digging into my jeans. I swallowed hard, forcing myself to look calm—for him. The knock came. Three sharp raps that sent my heart plunging into my stomach. Alex didn’t move. His grip on the gun tightened, his finger hovering near the trigger. I could see the sweat dripping down his temple, though his expression remained unreadable. “Open up,” a voice called from the other side. It was deep, firm, and entirely unfamilia
Chapter 42: The Price of Trust The rain pelted against the window, each droplet a small hammer tapping at my nerves. The storm outside mirrored the chaos inside the house. Alex was pacing again, his brow furrowed, his lips pressed into a thin line. I sat at the edge of the couch, my hands clasped tightly in my lap, trying to suppress the tremor in my fingers. Precious was in the next room with Reid, keeping him occupied with one of his puzzles. It was the only thing that seemed to calm him these days. “How much longer do you think we have?” I asked finally, breaking the heavy silence. Alex stopped mid-step and turned to me, his eyes dark and unreadable. “Not long. They’re closing in.” A chill ran down my spine. His words confirmed what I’d been feeling for days—that the walls were closing in on us, that no matter how far we ran, we couldn’t outrun the past. “What do they want, Alex?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. “Why can’t they just leave us alone?” He hesit
Chapter 41: The Unseen War I wasn’t prepared for the silence that greeted me. It wasn’t the comforting stillness that usually meant safety—it was oppressive, like the air was holding its breath. Every step I took felt like walking on glass, the tension threatening to shatter at any moment. Alex stood near the window, his body taut like a coiled spring. He didn’t turn when I entered the room, but his sharp whisper cut through the quiet. “They’re here.” My stomach twisted. “Are you sure?” He pointed outside, where faint shadows flickered against the glow of a distant streetlamp. They were subtle—too subtle for someone who wasn’t looking. But Alex had always been good at spotting the invisible threats. “What do we do?” I asked, my voice trembling despite my best efforts. “Stay calm.” He finally turned to face me, his expression unreadable. “Get Reid and Precious into the basement. Now.” Basement. My heart sank. Reid hated small, confined spaces. I’d barely convinced him t
Chapter 40: The Price of Silence I slammed the door behind me, my heart racing. Reid’s panicked cries echoed in my ears as I pressed my back against the wall, trying to steady my breathing. “Where is Alex?” I whispered under my breath, scanning the room. The safehouse had never felt smaller, its walls closing in on me. Every creak, every shadow felt like a threat. “Mum?” Reid’s voice wavered from the corner of the room. His little hands clutched Precious’s sleeve as she crouched beside him, trying to keep him calm. I forced a smile, though my chest felt like it was caving in. “It’s okay, sweetheart,” I said, my voice trembling. “I’m here.” He didn’t look convinced. “Adeline, we can’t stay here,” Precious muttered, her voice barely audible. I nodded. She was right. The safehouse wasn’t safe anymore, not with Alex gone and no plan in place. But where could we go? Every option felt like a trap waiting to spring. “Pack your things,” I said, keeping my voice steady for Re
Chapter 39: Shattered IllusionsI barely registered the cold metal of the handcuffs biting into my wrists as they locked me into the chair. My thoughts spiraled, every nerve in my body screaming to fight, to run, but I forced myself to stay calm. If I panicked now, I’d lose everything. Across from me, the room was empty except for a single table and the shadowed figure leaning against it. His face was cloaked in darkness, but I didn’t need to see him to feel the weight of his presence. “You’ve been busy, Ms. Peace,” he said finally, his voice low and smooth, like a predator toying with its prey. I glared at him, refusing to respond. He wanted a reaction, but I wouldn’t give him that satisfaction. He stepped forward, the light catching the sharp angles of his face. I recognized him instantly—Cole. He was one of *them*. Alex’s warnings about people like him echoed in my mind. “What do you want?” I spat, my voice steadier than I felt. Cole smirked. “It’s not about what I want
Chapter 38: The Unbelievable I didn’t realize how quiet the room had grown until the sound of my own breathing filled the space. Alex stood across from me, his expression unreadable, his arms crossed like he was bracing for whatever storm I was about to unleash.“Tell me you’re joking,” I said, my voice low, trembling with disbelief. “I wish I was.” His words came out cold and firm, but there was a flicker of regret in his eyes that he couldn’t quite hide. The letter in my hand felt heavier than it had any right to. A single page, yet it held the kind of information that could destroy lives. “You were working with them this whole time?” My voice cracked as I forced the question out. “I had no choice.” “You *had no choice*?” I repeated, my anger surging now. “You always have a choice, Alex. But you made yours, didn’t you? You chose them over us.” He didn’t answer, his silence speaking louder than words ever could. Precious peeked into the room, her face pale. “Is everyt
Chapter 37: Beneath the SurfaceThe silence in the room was deafening. I could hear my heart pounding in my chest as I paced back and forth, the weight of the situation pressing down on me like a vice. Precious sat in the corner, her hands clasped tightly together, her face pale. Reid was unusually quiet, sitting cross-legged on the floor, his eyes darting between me and the door. “Alex, this is madness,” I finally said, my voice breaking the heavy stillness. “We can’t just wait here. We have to do something.” Alex stood near the window, his eyes scanning the dark street below. His shoulders were tense, his jaw clenched. He hadn’t said much since the call came in—just enough to tell me that things were worse than we thought. “We don’t have a choice,” he said, his voice low and measured. “If we move now, we’ll play right into their hands.” “And staying here makes us sitting ducks,” I shot back. “You’re asking me to gamble with Reid’s life. I won’t do that.” Alex turned to fa
Chapter 36: The Edge of LoyaltyThe headlights blinded me for a second, freezing me in place like prey caught in a predator’s trap. I held Reid tighter, his little arms clinging to my neck as if sensing the danger ahead. Precious stopped beside me, her breath shallow and frantic. And there she was—Sarah. Standing beside the sleek black car, her arms crossed and her expression unreadable. "Adeline," she called out, her voice carrying across the distance like a dagger. "Get in the car." I didn’t move. Every instinct screamed at me to run, but my legs refused to obey. “What do you want from us?” I shouted back, my voice trembling despite my best efforts. Sarah took a step closer, her heels clicking against the pavement. “I want to save you from yourself. You think you can outrun this? You think they’ll stop coming for you?” “Stay back!” I yelled, shifting Reid to my other arm. Sarah stopped, her gaze softening. “Adeline, you’re making this harder than it needs to be. Come
