Chapter 10: on the Ride

The knock reverberated through the cramped apartment, each thud like a countdown to disaster. My throat tightened as I stared at the door, my fingers curling into trembling fists. Alex. Why now? Why here?

“Mum,” Reid’s small voice pulled me back. He rubbed his sleepy eyes, looking from me to Precious, who had gone as pale as a sheet.

“It’s nothing, sweetheart,” I lied, forcing a smile. “Go back to sleep.”

The knocking grew more insistent, and I motioned for Precious to take Reid into the bathroom. She nodded silently, scooping him up and shutting the door behind her. My heart pounded as I took a step toward the door, my bare feet feeling like lead weights.

I hesitated, my hand hovering over the doorknob. Every instinct screamed at me to run, to hide. But there was no running from this.

When I finally opened the door, Alex stood there, his face shadowed by the dim hallway light. His eyes, sharp and unrelenting, locked onto mine.

“Adeline,” he said,

Chapter 11: Lines Crossed I slammed the car door shut, my hands trembling as I clutched the steering wheel. Reid sat quietly beside me, his small fingers playing with the hem of his shirt. Precious, unusually silent, shifted uncomfortably in the backseat. None of us had spoken since we left the company house. The weight of the eviction hung over us like a heavy storm cloud, suffocating and relentless. "Where are we going, Mum?" Reid finally broke the silence, his voice timid. "Somewhere safe," I replied curtly, my mind racing. Somewhere safe? Where was safe? The hotel I'd booked earlier came to mind, but even that felt temporary, like a Band-Aid over a deep wound. Reid didn't ask any more questions, but I could feel his gaze on me. It was the kind of look that asked questions words couldn’t express. How do you explain to a five-year-old that his world was crumbling because of choices he didn’t make? We reached the hotel a few minutes later, and I parked the car, letting out

He was quiet, too quiet, and the tension between us hung in the air like a suffocating cloud.“Are you sure we’re safe here?” I asked finally, breaking the silence. His head turned slightly, but he didn’t look at me. “Safe is relative, Adeline. For now, yes. But they’ll keep looking.”I clenched my fists, the frustration bubbling to the surface. “You keep saying ‘they,’ but you won’t tell me who ‘they’ are. How am I supposed to protect Reid if I don’t even know what we’re up against?”Alex sighed and leaned back, his eyes catching the faint moonlight. “It’s not that simple. My chest tightened as I watched Alex’s face harden, his jaw clenched in a way that screamed trouble. “Stay here,” he whispered, gripping the gun tightly. “Are you insane?” I hissed, grabbing his arm before he could move. “You can’t just walk out there.” His gaze softened for a moment, but his resolve didn’t waver. “I won’t let them get to Reid.” My throat tightened at his words. “And what if they get to *you*?” He didn’t answer. Instead, he moved toward the door, his steps quiet and calculated. I stood frozen, my heart pounding so loudly I was sure it would wake Reid. Precious appeared in the doorway, her face pale. “What’s going on?” she whispered, her eyes darting between Alex and me. “Stay with Reid,” I said quickly, my voice trembling. “Don’t let him wake up.” She nodded, but fear lingered in her eyes as she disappeared back into the bedroom. Precious sat by his bed, her posture tense as though bracing for a storm. And then there was Alex—pacing, silent, his jaw set in a way that made me uneasy. “We can’t stay here any longer,” I said finally, breaking the silence. My voice was firm, though every part of me felt like it could shatter at any moment. Alex paused mid-step, turning to look at me. “And go where? They already know we’re here.” “Exactly,” I snapped. “Which means this place is a trap now. We need to leave before they close in.” He ran a hand through his hair, frustration evident. “It’s not that simple, Adeline. They’re watching every road out of here. If we move without a plan, we’ll lead them straight to Reid.” Hearing my son’s name sent a fresh wave of anxiety coursing through me. I clenched my fists, trying to keep my voice steady. “Then come

He says he had a legal agreement with him before his death.”I scoffed. “That’s impossible. My father would never do business with a man like him.”Lily smirked from her seat, swirling the wine in her glass as if enjoying the chaos. “Well, sweetheart, the law doesn’t care what your father would or wouldn’t do. It only cares about the paperwork. And if Blake has something solid, you might lose everything.”I shot her a glare before focusing back on the papers. The name alone sent a cold wave through me, but I squared my shoulders. I wouldn’t show fear. Not now. Not ever. “Answer it,” I said. Lucien hesitated for a second before putting the call on speaker. “Blake.” A slow chuckle came from the other end. “Lucien. It’s been a while.” My stomach twisted at the sound of his voice. Smooth, confident—just as I remembered. “What do you want?” Lucien’s tone was sharp. Blake sighed dramatically. “Straight to business. No ‘how have you been?’ No pleasantries?” “You filed a lawsuit against the company,” I cut in. “We don’t have time for games.” Blake went silent for a beat. Then, his voice turned cold. “Oh, but I do. And I’m just getting started.” I exchanged a glance with Lucien. Whatever Blake was up to, it wasn’t just about money. This

The words on the page felt like a slap to my face—a cruel reminder that secrets never stayed buried forever. Lucien reached for the letter, his fingers brushing against mine. "Lila, who sent this?" His voice was steady, but his eyes burned with urgency. I swallowed hard, my throat dry. "There’s no name, no return address. Just…this." I handed it over, my hands still shaking. Lucien's sharp gaze scanned the words, and I saw the moment he tensed, his jaw tightening. "They know about Reid." His voice was laced with fury. "They know everything." A chill ran through me. My fingers curled into fists at my sides as I forced myself to breathe. "What do they want?" Lucien lifted the paper slightly. "A meeting. Tonight. Midnight. They’re giving us an address." I exhaled shakily. "This could be a trap." "It could be," he admitted, his eyes flickering with dark intensity. "Bu

I didn't know what exactly to think, I just kept mute, I don't know what exactly to upon, but deep down I know I needed to act as fast as I could Silence filled the air, thick with tension. Caleb exhaled sharply. “Well, that’s not ominous at all.” Lucien didn’t speak. His jaw was clenched so tight I thought it might snap. I stepped closer, my pulse pounding. “Lucien, what does he mean?” His gaze flicked to me, then back to the phone. “Wallace doesn’t leave messages unless he wants us to hear them. He’s taunting me.” I crossed my arms. “Or warning you.” Lucien’s expression darkened. “No. Wallace doesn’t warn people. If he says we’re running out of time, it means he has something planned.” A chill ran down my spine. Caleb shifted, cracking his knuckles. “So, wh

Chapter 71: The TrapThe morning sun barely peeked through the blinds when I woke up to an empty bed. I reached out, but Lucien was gone. Panic shot through me until I heard voices from downstairs. Throwing on a robe, I hurried down, stopping at the living room entrance. Lucien stood near the window, speaking into his phone. Caleb and Luca sat on the couch, deep in discussion. “No,” Lucien said firmly. “We move first.” He turned, spotting me. His eyes softened for a second before his expression hardened again. “Yeah, I’ll handle it,” he muttered before hanging up. I crossed my arms. “What’s going on?” Lucien sighed, rubbing his jaw. “Wallace is making his move.” My stomach clenched. “How soon?” Luca leaned forward. “Tonight.” Caleb nodded. “His men are moving shipments. If we hit them first, we cripple his operation.” Lucien’s gaze locked onto mine. “I need you to stay here.” I frowned. “Lucien—” “No arguments, Lila,” he said firmly. “It’s too dangerous.”

I pulled back just enough to look at him. “I’m not leaving you.” “Lila.” His voice was firm, but there was something else in his eyes—something raw. “Please.” I hesitated. The last time I’d let him handle things alone, it had almost gone terribly wrong. But this time, the police were coming. This time, Morgan wasn’t walking away. I gave him a sharp nod and turned toward the car. But just as I took a step, a gunshot rang out. Lucien tackled me before I could even register what was happening. We hit the ground hard. My breath whooshed out, and my ears rang. Caleb shouted. Someone screamed. Lucien cursed. “Stay down.” I barely had time to process the words before he was on his feet, gun raised.
