Chapter 13: Breaking Point

The house was silent, save for the distant hum of the idling car. My chest tightened as I watched Alex’s face harden, his jaw clenched in a way that screamed trouble.

“Stay here,” he whispered, gripping the gun tightly.

“Are you insane?” I hissed, grabbing his arm before he could move. “You can’t just walk out there.”

His gaze softened for a moment, but his resolve didn’t waver. “I won’t let them get to Reid.”

My throat tightened at his words. “And what if they get to *you*?”

He didn’t answer. Instead, he moved toward the door, his steps quiet and calculated. I stood frozen, my heart pounding so loudly I was sure it would wake Reid. Precious appeared in the doorway, her face pale.

“What’s going on?” she whispered, her eyes darting between Alex and me.

“Stay with Reid,” I said quickly, my voice trembling. “Don’t let him wake up.”

She nodded, but fear lingered in her eyes as she disappeared back into the bedroom.

Alex motioned for me to stay

Precious sat by his bed, her posture tense as though bracing for a storm. And then there was Alex—pacing, silent, his jaw set in a way that made me uneasy. “We can’t stay here any longer,” I said finally, breaking the silence. My voice was firm, though every part of me felt like it could shatter at any moment. Alex paused mid-step, turning to look at me. “And go where? They already know we’re here.” “Exactly,” I snapped. “Which means this place is a trap now. We need to leave before they close in.” He ran a hand through his hair, frustration evident. “It’s not that simple, Adeline. They’re watching every road out of here. If we move without a plan, we’ll lead them straight to Reid.” Hearing my son’s name sent a fresh wave of anxiety coursing through me. I clenched my fists, trying to keep my voice steady. “Then come

The engine sound outside grew louder, closer, until it stopped. My breath hitched. “They’re here,” Alex muttered, his back pressed to the wall. Reid stirred on the couch, rubbing his eyes. “Mum? What’s going on?” I crawled to him, forcing a smile I didn’t feel. “It’s okay, sweetie. Go back to sleep.” “But—” “Now, Reid,” I whispered, brushing his hair back. He looked at me, confused, but lay down again. I signaled to Precious, who nodded and pulled Reid close, her arms protectively wrapped around him. Alex crouched low, his gun clutched in his hand. “Adeline,” he said without looking at me. “If anything happens, you take Reid and run.” “I’m not leaving you,” I hissed back, my voice trembling. “You don’t have a choice.” The weight of his words crushed me, but before I could

Reid clung to my side, his little hand squeezing mine so tightly it almost hurt. Precious was behind us, holding the flashlight steady, though her hands trembled. Alex had been gone for too long. “How much longer, Mum?” Reid’s voice was barely above a whisper, his tone laced with fear. I crouched down to meet his eyes. “Not much longer, baby. Stay close to me, okay?” He nodded, his lips quivering, but he didn’t say another word. Precious took a step forward, her flashlight beam sweeping the narrow hallway. “We can’t stay here,” she said, her voice breaking the silence. “If they’re out there, waiting for us, we need to move before Alex comes back.” I shook my head, standing up. “No. Alex said to wait here until he checked the perimeter.” “Adeline,” she hissed, her voice sharp now. “It’s been over an hour. Reid was asleep in the next room, blissfully unaware of the storm brewing around him.“Adeline, you need to listen to me,” Alex started, his voice low but urgent. His pacing stopped abruptly, and his piercing gaze locked onto mine. “They’ve escalated. My palms were slick with sweat as I clutched the edge of the bed, staring at the spot where he had stood only moments before. The air inside felt too thick to breathe. Precious sat in the corner with Reid, her arms wrapped protectively around him. I didn’t have an answer for her, because I wasn't expecting any of the actions. My throat felt dry, and my legs were restless as I paced the cramped space of the cabin. Alex was supposed to check the perimeter and come back immediately. That was hours ago. The clock ticked past midnight. Each passing second felt like the tightening of a noose. Chapter 21:A Truth Too Heavy to BearI should have known better than to believe we were safe. The first warning came as a crackling sound on the cabin's lone radio, static laced with unintelligible murmurs. I glanced at Alex, who sat at the table sharpening a knife, his movements slow and deliberate. He froze when the sound broke through the room, his eyes meeting mine in an instant of shared panic. "What’s that?" I asked, my voice trembling as I held Reid closer. He was sketching something with the crayons Alex had brought him, oblivious to the tension. Alex set the knife down and moved to the radio, his fingers adjusting the dial. "It’s nothing. Probably interference." But it didn’t feel like nothing. The static had a strange rhythm, almost like a message trying to claw its way through. My stomach churned. I had learned to trust my instincts, and right now, they screamed at me that something was wrong. "We need to leave," I said abruptly, standing. Alex looked at me as if

Every creak of the floorboards, every hum of the fridge sounded like a warning, a reminder that peace was a luxury we couldn’t afford. Reid’s laughter from earlier that day still echoed in my ears, but now it felt distant, almost like a cruel memory of something I might lose. I stared at him as he slept, his tiny hand clutching the edge of his blanket. He looked so peaceful, so unaware of the storm that was circling us. I couldn’t sleep. My body refused to rest. Instead, I sat in the dim light of the living room, my legs folded under me on the couch, eyes fixed on the door. I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was coming. Alex was somewhere in the shadows, pacing like a restless predator. His movements were silent, but I could feel him. I hated that his presence both unsettled me and brought me a sliver of comfort. “You should get some rest,” he said

Alex’s eyes darted between me and the door, calculating every possible move, while Precious clutched the arm of the couch, frozen in place. “Stay quiet,” Alex whispered, his voice calm but laced with urgency. I could barely breathe. My pulse hammered in my ears, and every second felt like an eternity. Reid clung to my leg, his tiny fingers digging into my jeans. I swallowed hard, forcing myself to look calm—for him. The knock came. Three sharp raps that sent my heart plunging into my stomach. Alex didn’t move. His grip on the gun tightened, his finger hovering near the trigger. I could see the sweat dripping down his temple, though his expression remained unreadable. “Open up,” a voice called from the other side. It was deep, firm, and entirely unfamilia

Chapter 42: The Price of Trust The rain pelted against the window, each droplet a small hammer tapping at my nerves. The storm outside mirrored the chaos inside the house. Alex was pacing again, his brow furrowed, his lips pressed into a thin line. I sat at the edge of the couch, my hands clasped tightly in my lap, trying to suppress the tremor in my fingers. Precious was in the next room with Reid, keeping him occupied with one of his puzzles. It was the only thing that seemed to calm him these days. “How much longer do you think we have?” I asked finally, breaking the heavy silence. Alex stopped mid-step and turned to me, his eyes dark and unreadable. “Not long. They’re closing in.” A chill ran down my spine. His words confirmed what I’d been feeling for days—that the walls were closing in on us, that no matter how far we ran, we couldn’t outrun the past. “What do they want, Alex?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. “Why can’t they just leave us alone?” He hesit

Chapter 41: The Unseen War I wasn’t prepared for the silence that greeted me. It wasn’t the comforting stillness that usually meant safety—it was oppressive, like the air was holding its breath. He didn’t turn when I entered the room, but his sharp whisper cut through the quiet. “They’re here.” My stomach twisted. “Are you sure?” He pointed outside, where faint shadows flickered against the glow of a distant streetlamp. They were subtle—too subtle for someone who wasn’t looking. But Alex had always been good at spotting the invisible threats. “What do we do?” I asked, my voice trembling despite my best efforts. “Stay calm.” He finally turned to face me, his expression unreadable. “Get Reid and Precious into the basement. Now.” Basement. My heart sank. Reid hated small, confined spaces. I’d barely convinced him t

Chapter 39: Shattered IllusionsI barely registered the cold metal of the handcuffs biting into my wrists as they locked me into the chair. My thoughts spiraled, every nerve in my body screaming to fight, to run, but I forced myself to stay calm. If I panicked now, I’d lose everything. Across from me, the room was empty except for a single table and the shadowed figure leaning against it. His face was cloaked in darkness, but I didn’t need to see him to feel the weight of his presence. “You’ve been busy, Ms. Peace,” he said finally, his voice low and smooth, like a predator toying with its prey. I glared at him, refusing to respond. He wanted a reaction, but I wouldn’t give him that satisfaction. He stepped forward, the light catching the sharp angles of his face. I recognized him instantly—Cole. He was one of *them*. Alex’s warnings about people like him echoed in my mind. “What do you want?” I spat, my voice steadier than I felt. Cole smirked. “It’s not about what I want
