•CHAPTER FOUR•
Unexpected encounter..
YEARS LATER..
Time flew faster than one's imagination and six years swung by as a blur..
It's been six years since I walked away from it all and began a new life void of any dictatorship. The best thing I could whip out of my past was to channel all the hurt and disappointment into work, and here I was with a skyrocketing secretarial duty.
“Mummy, it's my birthday!” Reid's scream over the phone made me cover my ears and chuckle.
Right..
I had a five year old son – the product of my nightstand with Mr. arrogant whom I'd never met since we got intimate..
I could vividly remember, confirming my pregnancy six years ago was like a nightmare..
‘I’m just trying to cope in a new country and now, a pregnancy?’
Those were the exact words I said to the doctor when he broke the news of my pregnancy…
“You can't cope with this job like this, you're heavily pregnant and your consistent sleep makes your work so unprofessional..” Those were the words that stopped me from being a librarian at the museum six months after my transfer and thankfully, I wasn't deported back to Russia..
Well..
My pleas did the job.
I smiled, as memories came in, flooding my head.
“I'm five years mum!” Reid screamed again and this time, a tear dropped from my eyes to my laptop which I was working on.
Sounds crazy but I'd literally worked all night in the office and slept only for a few hours. That's the price of being a secretary to the most cruel woman on earth..
“The child is just three weeks old. How can you drop him off with a nanny and go start work??!” my neighbor had scolded me with those words five years ago when I got the job..
And my response was nothing but “I can't take care of him if I don't work, it's painful too but I have no choice”..
Deep Sighs..
“Yes baby, five years ago, I was groaning in pain on the hospital bed, trying to bring you out of my narrow pelvis..” I smiled, wiping the threatening tears. The memories wouldn't stop coming..
“I love you so much Reid.." I admitted and heard him giggle from the other end.
“I love you too mum, please come home today. I miss you" he pleaded and I hummed softly.
“I'm sorry, I won't be able to. I'll be working with my colleagues and you know I can't drive late, so I'll lodge in the nearest hotel” I uttered and he groaned.
“Mum, but it's weekend.”
“I'm sorry baby." I replied, hoping my door won't burst in anytime soon to bring my devilish boss into view.
“You know what, tell your nanny to bring you over to my office this morning since I'm not so busy for now, so I'll take you for shopping" I proclaimed..
“Really?!" He screamed happily and I had to cover my ears again…
“It's wrong to scream during calls, Reid!" I chuckled
“That was out of excitement" he replied and i could really imagine him rolling his eyes.
“So baby, make your three birthday wishes..” I digressed after a few seconds and he cleared his throat funnily..
“Okay first and foremost, I want to celebrate my next birthday on a beach..” he spoke dreamingly and i laughed…
“Secondly, I want a baby sister next year..” he said and I pressed my lips together, certain about what his last wish was going to be.
“Lastly, I want to meet dad whom you said traveled.." he muttered the words I was expecting.
That was his usual anthem so I wasn't surprised.
“Dad would be back soon, Reid" I reassured even though I knew there was a low possibility of that happening.
Maybe it was my non-interest for Californian guys or just my determination to solely raise my son.. either way, I'd never bothered to make relationships a priority.
‘Maybe I'll try it out when I turn thirty’ I've always told myself.
Well well, next year will be my thirtieth year so it's almost time, right?
“You know you've been saying that since I was three” he reminded and I breathed.
“Believe mummy..” I tried reassuring again and coincidentally, my eyes landed on a small white envelope and with furrowed brows, I took it.
I really hadn't noticed it until now..
“I'll come around with nanny soon, bye, I want to have breakfast, I had my bath already..” Reid replied while I curiously opened the envelope with just one hand.
“Thanks so much Precious for always being there" I said to his nanny immediately her voice came back on..
“You're welcome ma'am" she replied and after a few seconds of the discussion, I ended the call, properly opening the envelope which I'd been struggling with..
My eyes widened on realizing it's a letter from my boss.
Apparently, she had dropped it on my desk yesterday afternoon before leaving because that was the last time I saw her..
“Why didn't I notice you, I'm so doomed!” I winced at the envelope like it could hear me.
I unfolded the paper immediately and my eyes caught words written in capital letters.
‘TOMORROW IS MY SWEETHEART'S BIRTHDAY AND I'LL BE BRINGING HIM OVER, MAKE SURE MY OFFICE IS DECORATED AS EARLY AS EIGHT WITH A TWO-STEP CAKE FROM MR. BIGGS MALL’
I instantly felt like peeing on myself.
For Pete's sake, it was well past eight already!
“What's she going to do to me this time? Spill hot coffee on me, hit me, reduce my salary, tear my shirt like the last time? Or even sack me?.. I'm so doomed" I thought dreadfully, getting up from my seat immediately.
Without hesitation, I dialed the decoration company's number and as expected, the call got answered immediately..
“Marvel decorations on the line, how may we help you?” the usual female voice asked.
“I need you to be as fast as possible, it's very urgent. Come over to MC. Donald and co right now, an interior design is needed"I said, breathlessly..
My eyes caught the clock ticking and I felt like fainting.
I was in trouble!
Sarah Donalds, my boss, was the real definition of merciless and cruel and sometimes, I do wonder how the lover she talks about every time keeps up with her..
Five years of working as her secretary feels like being in hell for five years.
“Okay miss, we'll be there soon. What sort of design do you want to order? Housewarming, birthday? Bridal shower, wedding anniversary, promotion —”..
“Birthday!” I cut the voice off, sweating profusely despite being under the air conditioner and without waiting for her response, I ended the call.
I brushed my hair backwards with my fingers.
I'd thought I was going to please her this morning by completing all the work at night and having my bath quickly early this morning but with this mess?.. I doubt if she was even going to acknowledge my hard work.
“The cake!" I suddenly remembered and without hesitation, I picked up her debit card from my drawer, slipping it into my purse before heading towards the door.
“Let the decorators begin work in the boss's office when they arrive and assign two workers to supervise” I instructed the receptionist hurriedly before rushing out.
All thanks to my crazy drive, I was back in less than thirty minutes. I rushed back to the office with the cake, hoping boss hadn't arrived yet..
However..
Luck wasn't on my side this time. Just as I got to the floor where our offices were located, I heard Sarah's yells and a pacifying man's voice..
“You're finally ruined, Adele” my mind cried, as my legs slowly began moving on their own.
My cheeks were still stinging from yesterday's hit and I really wasn't ready for more hits..
“Don't tell me to calm down, she ruined the surprise!” I heard Sarah's yell as I handled my office door knob.
My office was positioned right in front of hers so one would have to go into it first before entering hers.
I exhaled.
“You should have told or dropped a letter earlier than yesterday so I'ld have added it to my plans, it's not my fault” I thought, slowly twisting the knob with my other hand.
Wasting time would only worsen issues.
But then, just as I walked in, my gaze landed on a tattoo which was boldly labeled at the back of a man's neck which was turned to me.
I raised a brow, recognising the mark immediately.
“The star-shaped tattoo?" I muttered, staring at the familiar tattoo which I kept struggling to pinpoint where I'd seen it from.
Why does the man's stature seem so familiar too?
“You incompetent thing!”
An unexpected yell jolted me out of my tracks and I turned to see Sarah, standing right infront of me with a deadly glare.
I didn't even notice her advancing towards me.
I caught a glimpse of the uniformed decorators in her office and before I knew it, a hit landed on me, making me stagger backwards and lose hold of the cake.
Damn..
“Babe, I don't like this” I heard her man say as I struggled to balance back on my feet..
“You're ruining my day this way..!” he complained and then our gazes finally snagged..
“Huh?!”
I instantly froze on seeing his face.
Wait..
No.. I mean.. yes..
Have I.. have I suddenly started seeing things?!
My eyes widened.
It can't be, right?..
'Mr arrogant. The father of my son!!
It can't be him, right?!!!
Oh my ..gawd!
He had changed a lot but I could still recognise him perfectly well.
But why was he staring at me blankly?..
“Mr.. Mr arrogant?!” my lips moved before I could stop it.
“I'm only putting her in her place!” Sarah replied to him, not hearing my mutter.
I batted my lashes again.. I can't be wrong, this is him!
I'd just met my son's father after six years and he's the lover she was always talking about!
“No, not this type of coincidence!” my mind screamed.
“Hey miss, what's wrong, you've been staring at me. Is anything on my face?" he finally spoke. I wasn't insane, I could still recognise that voice!.
“You. don't. know. me?” I asked slowly with my breaths getting ragged.
“What's going on here?” Sarah demanded with a voice that was a bit calm.
“It's the insane driver..” I reminded
That was the name he called me that day right?
“Have we met before?” His words made me freeze.
“What!”
At that very moment, I literally forgot about Sarah..
There was no way my son's father wouldn't recognise me! …it can't happen!
“Can someone say something!” Sarah demanded and once again, I ignored her. She didn't matter at that moment.
“Who goes by that name?” Mr. Arrogant asked, sounding and looking completely confused.
My eyes widened more broadly..
“You.. you can't remember me?”
The door instantly burst open, disrupting the moment and Reid rushed in.
“Mum!”...
“Adeline!!!" Sarah growled.
The shock in me couldn't allow me to hug my son nor scold his nanny for bringing him into my office.
I was just stiff..
He raised his head a second later and then landed his gaze on Mr arrogant..
“Dad, is that you?”
His question made me jolt out of my emotions immediately.
“Eh?..” Mr. arrogant voiced
“Reid!”i tried to caution
“Are you the daddy whom mum said travelled? You and mum planned that you'll come surprise me on my birthday right?.. that's why she told me I'll be seeing you soon this morning right?..” Reid asked all at once.
I grabbed him immediately while Sarah's expression remained a confusing one.
“Let's go–”
I attempted to push him out of his office but that was short-lived when he spoke.
“You once told me dad and I have the same eye and hair colour. I am not mistaken..”
My gaze expanded more..
5…Two-edged sword's stab “And what gives you the impression that only your dad has the same eye and hair colour as you, in this world!”That, with a cold voice and then a stern look was literally how Sarah reacted to my son's statement. At that same moment, the decoration workers inside her office rushed out immediately, leaving the office.Who can stand the wild Sarah Donalds?..She glared dangerously at Reid, making the little boy grab a handful of my cloth while trying to hold me tight in fright. My heart was still racing hard and my head was aching badly due to Mr. Arrogant sudden denial but …!How was I even supposed to affirm Reid's words of being his son when all I'm saying seems so strange to Mr arrogant?..When I have no evidence to back up all I knew about that night..?And in fact, Sarah's glares and cruel reactions?..Damn!.“You'll have to give him time” I told myself, feeling myself shivering slightly like I'd caught a cold flu.“No, Sarah, you don't talk to a little
On suspension Getting sacked has been all I'd been avoiding since I began working with Sarah. Even during the days I was so indisposed, my work had always been a priority simply because I believed it was one of the highest paying jobs in town and the only way I could give my son the best life I dreamed of..But now?..Fired?..Sarah had never uttered those words to me. She was either going to say ‘Do you want to get fired' or ‘Have you found yourself a new job already?..’But today was different and I knew she wasn't joking.I didn't hesitate falling on my knees.. Where was I supposed to go from here?..Getting fired literally means losing my official car and house. Oh damn, I wasn't ready to be homeless, not even in a thousand years to come.I'd used the incomes I got in the last few years to cater for myself and my son, as well as covering the costs of renewing my stay in this country since my stay was no longer tied to my employment at the museum so I had little savings to depen
7..Mum, are we in trouble?.. After so many attempts to convince Reid, he finally agreed to go shopping and enjoy the rest of his birth-day hours..Nanny Precious did most of the job while I sat in a corner, sipping a cup of drink for a very long while with my mind reeling with different thoughts. The worst thing was that I had no one to talk to nor get some advisory words from. I hadn't communicated with my family since I left also, so I was just alone.“I'm so tired” Reid yawned, hugging me from behind as I drove home.“We're almost home, okay?” I spoke to pretend like I wasn't deep in thoughts.“If dad was here, he'll do the driving while I sleep on your lap” he muttered, yawning again.I sighed, tightening my grip around the steering wheel.Reid talks about his father was getting too much these days and it was bothersome, especially now that his father was about to have his own family without any memory of us..“Even if he won't accept me, at least, he should accept Reid" I'd m
### Chapter 8 Adeline didn’t hesitate; she grabbed Reid’s hand, her fingers trembling but firm. “We’re leaving,” she said, her voice barely audible over the lump rising in her throat. Reid stared up at her, eyes wide, his cheeks streaked with tears. “Where are we going, Mum?” “Somewhere safe.” Her words were more of a promise to herself than to him. She refused to let despair take over, even as Precious clung tightly to Reid’s other hand, whispering soothing words in his ear. They walked past the men, Adeline keeping her gaze forward, pretending their piercing stares didn’t burn into her back. She felt naked without the car keys in her hand, without the home waiting for her just a few steps away. But this wasn’t the time to crumble. “Where will we sleep?” Reid’s question hung in the cold evening air as they rounded the corner, the building now out of sight. Adeline stopped. For a moment, her carefully crafted strength faltered, and the weight of their situation pressed h
Chapter 9 In-between the web I didn’t want to open the door. My hands trembled as I stared at it, the weight of my breathing filling the room. Alex being here didn’t make sense. He was supposed to be living his perfect life, far away from us. So why now? Precious stood behind me, clutching Reid, who had woken up, his small arms wrapped tightly around her neck. “Mum, who’s there?” he whispered, his voice barely audible but sharp enough to pierce my heart. I didn’t answer. My mind raced with possibilities, none of them good. If Alex was here, it wasn’t a coincidence. He had no idea where we were. At least, he shouldn’t have. Another knock, harder this time, echoed through the room. “Adeline, I know you’re in there.” His voice made my chest tighten. How long had it been since I’d heard it? Too long, yet not long enough. I swallowed the lump in my throat and gestured for Precious to stay back. “Mum—” “It’s fine,” I cut Reid off, though it was a lie. Nothing about this was
Chapter 10: on the RideThe knock reverberated through the cramped apartment, each thud like a countdown to disaster. My throat tightened as I stared at the door, my fingers curling into trembling fists. Alex. Why now? Why here? “Mum,” Reid’s small voice pulled me back. He rubbed his sleepy eyes, looking from me to Precious, who had gone as pale as a sheet. “It’s nothing, sweetheart,” I lied, forcing a smile. “Go back to sleep.” The knocking grew more insistent, and I motioned for Precious to take Reid into the bathroom. She nodded silently, scooping him up and shutting the door behind her. My heart pounded as I took a step toward the door, my bare feet feeling like lead weights. I hesitated, my hand hovering over the doorknob. Every instinct screamed at me to run, to hide. But there was no running from this. When I finally opened the door, Alex stood there, his face shadowed by the dim hallway light. His eyes, sharp and unrelenting, locked onto mine. “Adeline,” he said,
Chapter 11: Lines Crossed I slammed the car door shut, my hands trembling as I clutched the steering wheel. Reid sat quietly beside me, his small fingers playing with the hem of his shirt. Precious, unusually silent, shifted uncomfortably in the backseat. None of us had spoken since we left the company house. The weight of the eviction hung over us like a heavy storm cloud, suffocating and relentless. "Where are we going, Mum?" Reid finally broke the silence, his voice timid. "Somewhere safe," I replied curtly, my mind racing. Somewhere safe? Where was safe? The hotel I'd booked earlier came to mind, but even that felt temporary, like a Band-Aid over a deep wound. Reid didn't ask any more questions, but I could feel his gaze on me. It was the kind of look that asked questions words couldn’t express. How do you explain to a five-year-old that his world was crumbling because of choices he didn’t make? We reached the hotel a few minutes later, and I parked the car, letting out
Chapter 12: **The Walls Closing InThe night air felt heavy, like a storm waiting to break. I sat on the edge of the old couch, staring at the front door, my thoughts a tangled mess. Reid’s soft breathing from the bedroom was the only sound in the house, but even that couldn’t calm my racing heart.Alex was sitting by the window, his silhouette barely visible in the dim light. He was quiet, too quiet, and the tension between us hung in the air like a suffocating cloud.“Are you sure we’re safe here?” I asked finally, breaking the silence. His head turned slightly, but he didn’t look at me. “Safe is relative, Adeline. For now, yes. But they’ll keep looking.”I clenched my fists, the frustration bubbling to the surface. “You keep saying ‘they,’ but you won’t tell me who ‘they’ are. How am I supposed to protect Reid if I don’t even know what we’re up against?”Alex sighed and leaned back, his eyes catching the faint moonlight. “It’s not that simple. If you knew, it would only put you in
Chapter 75: Unfinished BusinessLucien’s grip on the lawsuit papers tightened, his jaw clenched so hard I thought he might snap the paper in half. The name on the document burned into my mind—Blake. A ghost from my past, a man I had buried with my pain, was now clawing his way back into my life.I took a step closer, my heartbeat like a drum in my ears. “What exactly is he suing for?”Lucien exhaled sharply, handing me the document. “He’s claiming rights to your father’s estate. He says he had a legal agreement with him before his death.”I scoffed. “That’s impossible. My father would never do business with a man like him.”Lily smirked from her seat, swirling the wine in her glass as if enjoying the chaos. “Well, sweetheart, the law doesn’t care what your father would or wouldn’t do. It only cares about the paperwork. And if Blake has something solid, you might lose everything.”I shot her a glare before focusing back on the papers. My hands trembled slightly as I skimmed through the
Chapter 74: The Return of a Ghost** I barely had time to process the shock before Lucien’s phone rang. His jaw clenched as he glanced at the screen, then at me. “It’s him,” he said. Blake. The name alone sent a cold wave through me, but I squared my shoulders. I wouldn’t show fear. Not now. Not ever. “Answer it,” I said. Lucien hesitated for a second before putting the call on speaker. “Blake.” A slow chuckle came from the other end. “Lucien. It’s been a while.” My stomach twisted at the sound of his voice. Smooth, confident—just as I remembered. “What do you want?” Lucien’s tone was sharp. Blake sighed dramatically. “Straight to business. No ‘how have you been?’ No pleasantries?” “You filed a lawsuit against the company,” I cut in. “We don’t have time for games.” Blake went silent for a beat. Then, his voice turned cold. “Oh, but I do. And I’m just getting started.” I exchanged a glance with Lucien. Whatever Blake was up to, it wasn’t just about money. This
Chapter 72: A Mid Night Meeting I stared at the letter in my trembling hands, my heartbeat thundering in my ears. The words on the page felt like a slap to my face—a cruel reminder that secrets never stayed buried forever. Lucien reached for the letter, his fingers brushing against mine. "Lila, who sent this?" His voice was steady, but his eyes burned with urgency. I swallowed hard, my throat dry. "There’s no name, no return address. Just…this." I handed it over, my hands still shaking. Lucien's sharp gaze scanned the words, and I saw the moment he tensed, his jaw tightening. "They know about Reid." His voice was laced with fury. "They know everything." A chill ran through me. My fingers curled into fists at my sides as I forced myself to breathe. "What do they want?" Lucien lifted the paper slightly. "A meeting. Tonight. Midnight. They’re giving us an address." I exhaled shakily. "This could be a trap." "It could be," he admitted, his eyes flickering with dark intensity. "Bu
Chapter 72: Running Out of Time** Lucien’s grip tightened around the phone as Wallace’s voice echoed through the empty estate. **“You’re running out of time, Hunter.”** The message ended with a sharp beep. I didn't know what exactly to think, I just kept mute, I don't know what exactly to upon, but deep down I know I needed to act as fast as I could Silence filled the air, thick with tension. Caleb exhaled sharply. “Well, that’s not ominous at all.” Lucien didn’t speak. His jaw was clenched so tight I thought it might snap. I stepped closer, my pulse pounding. “Lucien, what does he mean?” His gaze flicked to me, then back to the phone. “Wallace doesn’t leave messages unless he wants us to hear them. He’s taunting me.” I crossed my arms. “Or warning you.” Lucien’s expression darkened. “No. Wallace doesn’t warn people. If he says we’re running out of time, it means he has something planned.” A chill ran down my spine. Caleb shifted, cracking his knuckles. “So, wh
Chapter 71: The TrapThe morning sun barely peeked through the blinds when I woke up to an empty bed. I reached out, but Lucien was gone. Panic shot through me until I heard voices from downstairs. Throwing on a robe, I hurried down, stopping at the living room entrance. Lucien stood near the window, speaking into his phone. Caleb and Luca sat on the couch, deep in discussion. “No,” Lucien said firmly. “We move first.” He turned, spotting me. His eyes softened for a second before his expression hardened again. “Yeah, I’ll handle it,” he muttered before hanging up. I crossed my arms. “What’s going on?” Lucien sighed, rubbing his jaw. “Wallace is making his move.” My stomach clenched. “How soon?” Luca leaned forward. “Tonight.” Caleb nodded. “His men are moving shipments. If we hit them first, we cripple his operation.” Lucien’s gaze locked onto mine. “I need you to stay here.” I frowned. “Lucien—” “No arguments, Lila,” he said firmly. “It’s too dangerous.”
Chapter 70: The Next MoveLucien didn’t let go of me. Even as the police sirens grew louder, as Caleb barked orders into his phone, and as Morgan lay groaning on the ground, Lucien’s arms stayed wrapped around me like a shield. “I need you to get in the car,” he murmured. I pulled back just enough to look at him. “I’m not leaving you.” “Lila.” His voice was firm, but there was something else in his eyes—something raw. “Please.” I hesitated. The last time I’d let him handle things alone, it had almost gone terribly wrong. But this time, the police were coming. This time, Morgan wasn’t walking away. I gave him a sharp nod and turned toward the car. But just as I took a step, a gunshot rang out. Lucien tackled me before I could even register what was happening. We hit the ground hard. My breath whooshed out, and my ears rang. Caleb shouted. Someone screamed. Lucien cursed. “Stay down.” I barely had time to process the words before he was on his feet, gun raised.
Chapter 69: This wasn't overLucien was silent on the drive home. His hands gripped the wheel tightly, his jaw clenched. The air between us felt heavy, charged with unspoken words. I kept stealing glances at him, hoping he’d say something—**anything**—but he didn’t. When we pulled into the driveway, he shut off the engine and exhaled slowly. “I should’ve told you what I was doing,” he finally said. I nodded. “Yeah, you should have.” His eyes met mine. “But you shouldn’t have followed me, Lila.” I crossed my arms. “What was I supposed to do? Sit at home while you put yourself in danger?” Lucien sighed, rubbing a hand over his face. “This isn’t just about me.” “I know,” I said. “That’s why we need to work together.” He hesitated. “I don’t know how to do that.” I reached for his hand. “Then let’s figure it out.” For a moment, he just stared at me, his expression unreadable. Then, finally, he nodded. **It wasn’t a promise. But it was a step forward.** ---Insid
Chapter 67: The Pushing away Lucien didn't let go. Even as the city pulsed beyond the glass windows of his office, he held me tightly, as if afraid I'd vanish. His body was tense, his grip firm—but beneath it, I felt something deeper. **Fear. Guilt. Uncertainty.** “I can’t lose you, Lila,” he murmured, his breath warm against my skin. I pulled back slightly, enough to look into his eyes. “Then stop pushing me away.” A muscle in his jaw twitched. “I don’t want you caught in my darkness.” I cupped his face, my thumbs brushing against the stubble on his cheeks. “Lucien, I don’t care about the darkness. I care about you.” His throat bobbed as he swallowed. “I don’t know how to stop feeling like this.” “Then let me help you,” I whispered. For a moment, he just stared at me, like he was searching for something—some proof that I wasn’t making empty promises. Then, finally, he nodded. “Okay.” It wasn’t much. But it was **a start.** ---That night, Lucien didn’t go b
Chapter 67: The Cost of VictoryLucien didn’t speak as we walked out of the warehouse. His steps were heavy, his jaw clenched so tightly I could see the muscles twitching. Caleb stayed close, his eyes scanning our surroundings as if expecting another attack. Police officers moved around us, securing the area, but none of it made me feel safe. **Not yet.** Luca stood by one of the police vehicles, his arms crossed. When he saw me, his expression softened, but only slightly. “You okay?” I nodded. “Thanks to you guys.” His gaze shifted to Lucien. “You look like hell.” what, what do you mean?, I asked myself, I didn't want to show off any form of anger, so I had take slow and calm, me don't want anything or form, that anything is escalating so let's keep on a lowLucien barely reacted. His knuckles were still raw, blood drying on his skin. His face was bruised, but that wasn’t what worried me. **It was the emptiness in his eyes.** Luca sighed, shaking his head. “Wallace is
