“Charles?” I looked over Jenny’s father’s shoulder at Charles. “What are you doing here?”

“Surprised, right?” Jenny’s father, Mr. Johnson, chuckled. “So were we when we first learned that Charles became a last-minute friend of Jenny. They met a day before her death.”

My heart sank at the revelation. Charles and Jenny, friends? It was like discovering a hidden chapter in Jenny’s life I never knew existed. We told each other everything, so why didn’t she tell me about meeting a billionaire the day before?

Charles shifted uncomfortably, avoiding eye contact. “I, uh, just wanted to pay my respects. I heard today is Jenny’s birthday, and I thought that was the least I could do.”

“Oh, Megan, you have no idea how much of a support system Charles has been to us during this period of our mourning,” Mr. Johnson continued. “Both financially and psychologically, Charles has been more than helpful. You know, he even paid for therapy for my wife and me?”
