The golf club seemed like the perfect place to clear my head, but for some reason, I couldn’t shake off the heavy feeling of guilt pressing down on my shoulders.

To make matters worse, Megan was by my side; her presence was like a constant reminder of what I did that night.

There was nothing to come clean about, but why was I feeling guilty? What I did with my life was nobody’s business.

The game with the mayor's son was just a mere distraction that failed to divert me. Megan cheered from the side, and I tried to ignore her. She canceled her plans to go to the race track all of a sudden to follow me to the club. I was already getting annoyed by her presence, although I refrained from telling her.

After the games, we sat at the clubhouse, the silence between us deafening.

Megan’s narrowed, piercing gaze demanded an explanation, and I knew I couldn’t avoid the conversation any longer.

“Charles, we need to talk,” Megan said, her eyes searching mine.
