Chapter 10

Penulis: Vege Pancake
Half an hour later, Anne showed up at the inpatient department in her ink-soiled clothes. Ignoring the curious glances of the doctors and nurses, she headed straight to the VIP ward on the 8th floor.

She pushed open the door to Sophia's ward and saw her on the hospital bed. Sophia was bursting out in laughter as she watched something on her phone.

Anne strode over.

Sophia instinctively turned to look at her, the smile still on her lips. "Anne, you—"

Anne threw the bottle of ink at her without a word.

The next moment, Zachery, who was sitting beside the bed, leaned forward to shield Sophia. The bottle of ink smashed against his back, dyeing his white shirt black.

"Oh, my!" Sophia gasped in shock.

Zachery turned around in anger. "What the hell are you doing? You—"

He then noticed the ink stains on Anne. Taken aback, he asked, "What happened to you?"

Anne's chest was heaving as she breathed deeply. She felt stuffy in her chest, her nose stinging and her eyes wet with unshed tears. She had always been mild-tempered and rarely got this angry.

"Security! Get over here, security!" The sound came from Sophia's phone. She had been laughing at a video of Anne being doused in ink by her fans.

Zachery saw the video on her phone. He frowned and said, "Some fans are indeed irrational, but it's not like Sophia asked them to do this. Can't you be more rational?"

Anne couldn't believe he was calling her irrational now.

"That video was clearly edited to be misleading. Don't tell me this wasn't orchestrated by her team! Also, why didn't she clear up the rumors about me seducing you? I was attacked by her fans, but why is she getting off scot-free?" she yelled, losing her temper.

"I've told you—you're not a celebrity. So, what if people are cursing you online? It won't affect you anyway," Zachery said with a frown.

Anne said, "Why should I take the heat for her?"

"Because I said so! Just take it on her behalf!" he replied.

"Zachery!" she yelled. Her breath was caught in her throat, yet tears started falling. "So my biggest mistake was getting involved with you in the first place!"

Zachery was stunned seeing her cry. He then kicked away the chair behind him irritably. "A mistake? That's right. It truly was a mistake!"

Anne was crying out of anger rather than sadness. She took a deep breath before turning to Sophia.

"I hope you clear things up as soon as possible and restore my reputation. If you refuse to, I'll do it on my own. And if it ends up stirring something bigger and causing a public outcry, it won't be my problem then." She then turned around and left.

"Anne!" Sophia called out for her in a hurry. "I'll apologize on behalf of my fans. So, can you please just let this slide?"

"You think everything can be settled with just a few words from you?" Anne chuckled coldly. "I'm not your kiss-ass who's easy to placate!"

Zachery ran after her as she walked out. "Who the fuck are you calling a kiss-ass?"

"I'm talking about you!" Anne replied.

"Anne, you—"

Anne stopped in her tracks abruptly and turned to face Zachery. "Do you know who you are to me now?"

He sneered and asked, "What am I?"

"You're Sophia's fiancé," she replied.

Zachery's smile froze. He assumed she would be cursing him and calling him a bastard with the way she was currently seething in anger. Yet, all she did was calmly tell him that he was no longer related to her and was only Sophia's fiancé in her eyes.

"What about it?" he asked.

Anne took a step back, gesturing the space between them. "So, stop ordering me around and tell me what to do. Let's keep things polite and distant from now on."

As if worried she wasn't clear enough, she took a few steps backward.

Zachery's gaze darkened as he watched her slowly back away from him until they were standing at a stranger's distance.

Sophia personally posted a statement in the afternoon.

Her post read, "Regarding what happened today, I sincerely apologize to Dr. Stafford on behalf of my fans. I understand how my fans felt, but please don't come for my aid—I can handle my own matters.

"To Dr. Stafford, I offer my heartfelt apology and hope that my apology satisfies you. I do not wish to bring up the past again. My fiancé and I had always been in love, and that's what truly matters. Please look forward to our wedding announcement. Love, Sophia."

Mindy started cursing after reading through the statement.

"What kind of clarification is this? She's painting herself as the victim, seemingly sincere. Yet in reality she was just trying to show how kind she was despite feeling aggrieved and that her fiancé and her were madly in love and won't be affected by any mistresses!"

She was beyond upset, wanting nothing but to destroy the phone that carried Sophia's clarification.

"Look. She even attached a photo." Mindy opened the photo and showed it to Anne.

In the photo, Sophia sat cross-legged on the hospital bed, with an IV needle in her hand. She wore a tired smile as she rested her chin on her hands. Sunlight streamed in through the window, casting a soft glow on her.

But that wasn't the focus of the photo—it was the patches of ink stains on her clothes and blanket.

As expected, the backlash had begun in the comments section under the photo.

"You deserved being doused in ink, bitch! I would've doused you in manure if I were that fan! Such a cheap woman you are!"

"You failed to seduce her fiancé, so you threatened to get money out of them. Yet, you're still so shameless even after getting the money. I can't believe someone as shameless as you actually existed!"

"Our dear Sophia is beautiful and kind. She didn't even hold it against you, yet a bitch like you still pushed your luck and doused her in ink. Us fans won't allow you to bully Sophia like this!"

"Remember, karma's always waiting for you! You'd better watch your step at night, lest you step onto a pile of shit!"

Anne wasn't reacting much, yet Mindy was beyond upset. "This is so infuriating!"

Anne felt surprisingly calm seeing the so-called clarification, the photo, and the vile comments. She had expected this—Sophia was never going to restore her reputation this easily.

Her phone buzzed at that moment.

It was a text from Harvey.

"Someone cursed at me today, so I cursed him back. He felt indignant and cursed me back again, so I punched him. He thought he could do anything he wanted, thinking that this was his turf, but I could make him submit as long as my punches were solid."

Anne was baffled, wondering what he was talking about. However, it almost felt like he was talking about her incident.

She replied, "Did you really get into a fight?"

Harvey replied, "Just speaking from experience. But honestly, most people dared not pick a fight with me. I've done time."

Anne's text read, "What?"

His reply came, "No one dared to mess with me anymore after I got out."

Mindy came back from work and saw that Anne was still staring blankly at her phone. "How about we just forget about it? There's a whole team of people behind Sophia. You can't win against them."

Anne shook her head and opened up her photo album on her phone. She found a photo and logged into her social media account before uploading it.

The caption under Anne's post read, "Zachery and I broke up at the beginning of this month. There's no need to explain why, but that doesn't change the fact that we shared eight wonderful years together."Anne's post quickly made it to the trending topics. Although it was ranked low, the view count was skyrocketing.Mindy furiously replied to comments while clicking her tongue in amusement. "It turns out that you and Mr. Judd were actually dating, huh?"Anne rolled her eyes. "Why? Did you think it was otherwise?"Mindy replied, "I really thought you were his debt collector back then."Anne leaned in closer with a smile. She watched as Mindy typed furiously, replying to one comment after another, yet they were quickly drowned by malicious comments."Her fans are doing comment control," Mindy said.Anne asked, "What does that mean?""You wouldn't know since you don't follow fandom drama. Basically, it means they control the narrative—whatever they say goes, whether it's true or n

The video was recorded a few days before Sophia's birthday. Zachery had asked Anne the best proposal spot in Windleton, and she thought he was about to propose to her.She loved the rooftop café in Stardust Grand Hotel, which often hosted various parties and celebrations.Anne made a point to stop by after work to record a video for Zachery. She happened to bump into Sophia having coffee with her friends. As such, Sophia ended up in the shot.Sophia taunted, "I've just heard you asking the manager if they can host a proposal party here. Is Zachery proposing to you or otherwise? How about we make a bet? My birthday is in a few days. Let's see if Zachery is going to propose to you or me."Anne found her provocation funny. It was impossible for Zachery to be proposing to another woman when he had already asked her—his girlfriend—about the venue. It would be too far a ridiculous insult if that were the case. She ignored Sophia and continued to record the distant scenery. With the star

Anne shot up from her seat and hurriedly grabbed her phone. She was hoping to fix the situation, but Harvey had already replied to her. "Okay."He only replied with a single word, and she stared at it for the longest time.Anne was pissed off by Zachery's comment on the "gift"—as if his getting married was a big deal, and no one would ever marry her. She even told him about how she was getting married to someone else, but he mocked her for being delusional. She slapped her forehead, trying to think of a way to fix this situation. At that moment, Harvey's reply came, "I told my family about the wedding date. They said it's a great day."Anne was rendered speechless. "The date might not be that great, after all," she replied with trembling hands.Harvey replied, "Why not?"Anne gritted her teeth and decided to be frank. "That's because my ex-boyfriend is also getting married on that day."His reply read, "If that's the case, let's have a grand wedding to annoy your ex-boyfriend

"Hello, Dr. Stafford. I'm Avery Sycamore, Sophia's manager. You can call me Ave," Avery Sycamore said. She was dressed in a pale blue suit, with neat short hair and frameless glasses. She looked every part of a professional career woman.Avery made her way from the hospital bed to Anne and extended her hand. Anne had both her hands in her coat, ignoring Avery's extended hand.Avery shook her head and laughed. "You must be in your 20s, right, Dr. Stafford? You're still so young. That's why you acted on impulse without thinking things through."Anne raised an eyebrow and asked, "What exactly should I be thinking through?""For example, you could've consulted us before you posted that photo. We might've considered buying it—one or two million dollars wouldn't have been a problem. By the way, how much do you make a month, Dr. Stafford?" Avery asked."I never knew a photo could sell for that much." Anne clicked her tongue regretfully.Avery replied, "Actually, it's still not too late

Sophia cried, "I know you hate me because Zachery wanted to marry me instead of you. I'm sorry… I'm really sorry! Please just go online to explain about that photo so that the haters won't cause a scandal about me! "I really can't take it! I'm worried I might harm myself again!"Anne's temper flared instantly. She yelled, "So, just because you're afraid of getting a scandal and ruining your career, you'll cause a scandal to ruin mine instead?"Why should I? You're the one who did something wrong. So, you should bear the consequences. I did nothing, so why must I take the blame for you?""Do you want me to get on my knees to beg?" Sophia was about to get onto her knees then, but Zachery helped her up.She continued, "Please plead with Anne on my behalf, Zachery! Isn't she angry that I took you away from her? I'll allow her to still be with you after we get married. I'll turn a blind eye and pretend I know nothing!"Anne erupted in anger upon hearing her words. She stepped forward

After Anne typed the words, she paused for a moment, staring at them before hitting delete.Harvey wasn't in show business—no matter how capable he was, there was no way he could compete with the kind of money the Judds had backing them."Zachery probably just couldn't stand seeing Sophia's team treat me like that. And it just happened he had these photos ready, so he posted them," Anne said, unfazed.Mindy shook her head. "It probably isn't that simple."Once Zachery made his statement, Sophia's team sprang into action. They started with an apology to Anne, followed by removing the intimate photos of Sophia and Sean. By afternoon, Sophia was out of the hospital.By the time Anne got off work at the hospital, the fans who'd been waiting with banners were gone. Her life had finally returned to normal. After getting off the subway, Anne picked up a bouquet of flowers, holding them close like she was cradling all the quiet beauty in the world. She snapped a picture and posted it on

"Tell your aunt not to send this junk to my house again! We're done with the mess and the stench!" Carol snapped.Anne's gaze fell to the sausages and bacon scattered on the ground. Doreen had spent a whole year making this for her. Anne looked up, meeting Carol's stare, her eyes flashing with anger."There's nothing gross or stinky about cured sausages and bacon. But some people's hearts sure are," she shot back.Carol jabbed a finger at her. "Did you just insult me? Don't even think for a second you'll stay in Windleton if you mess with me or the Judds. I'll make sure you're booted out of Windbrook Hospital and out of this town, no question!"With that, she spun on her heel and stormed inside, shouting at Agatha to close the gate."This is the most exclusive neighborhood in Oceanwind Villas! Not just anyone gets to live here. She used to live off Zachery's money, but now, she can go back to where she came from and live like she belongs!" Carol's voice drifted out.Anne wasn't

"Anne, the hospital can't just fire you like that without a reason!" Mindy fumed. "Don't just let them get away with it. Stand up for yourself! Take it to the public if you have to!"Anne pulled out a big bag of snacks from her bottom drawer and handed it to Mindy. They'd make do with these when they were too busy to eat anything heavy. Anne didn't usually eat them—they were mostly for Mindy."Anne, don't just brush this off! They're doing this because they think you're an easy target!" Mindy was practically boiling.Anne shook her head and smiled. "They gave me a decent severance package. I looked it over before I signed.""Anne!"Anne shrugged. "I was planning to quit anyway. The Judds own Windbrook Hospital, and if I really want to get away from Zachery, I need to leave it all behind."Mindy's anger finally started to die down."So, what's next?" she asked."I'm taking some time off. Then, I'll find another job," Anna replied.Mindy gave her a skeptical look. "You? Taking t

Meeting anyone from that family would always give Anne an immediate headache. Even though Carol had asked her to wait, she still shut the gate to her yard, making her stance clear.Carol cleared her throat. "I know about you and my son."Anne frowned. "What about me and your son?""That you two have rekindled an old flame. Sophia told me.""You guys are crazy!"Just as Anne turned around to leave, Carol called out behind her, "Anne, you're married to Harvey now. You should let go of your feelings for Zachery. Even if you can't help yourself, you must control it! Zachery can be impulsive at times, but you can't afford to be."We're talking about Harvey here—if he finds out about you two, he won't let you off. The Judd family might be powerful, but even we can't afford to cross the Parker family. For the sake of both our families, you two need to keep your distance."Anne was baffled, completely at a loss of how she should react to this. They truly were one family—their logic was

Hearing that, Harvey still looked skeptical."I remember very clearly—you don't like cilantro. Every time we eat out, if the restaurant adds it, you always ask me to pick it out for you."Anne was stunned but managed to maintain a calm expression. "You must be confusing me with someone else."Harvey furrowed his brows and started thinking hard. "Could it be that it's Lilian who doesn't like cilantro? Like last time, I mixed it up—she likes taro cheesecake, and I thought it was you.""Well, Lilian and I do have pretty different tastes." Anne chuckled. She reached over, took a taco from his hands, and took a bite from the top where the cilantro was. "The seasoning is spot on. It's really good."Harvey shrugged. "I must've remembered it wrong.""Good thing it's Lilian. If it was another woman, I'd be mad," Anne teased with a playful huff.Harvey raised a brow. "You can doubt my memory, but don't ever doubt my loyalty. That's an insult to my character."Anne laughed. "That serious

When Harvey got the news, he showed up not long after.Anne threw herself into his arms, fighting back tears. "I want to go home."Harvey kissed her forehead gently. "I'll have them transferred to another hospital. They won't bother you again.""I just want to go home," she insisted."Anne…""Hubby, let's go home." She looked up at him with pleading eyes.Harvey gazed at her, both helpless and doting. "Alright. Let me talk to the doctor."While he went to speak with the doctor, Anne pulled herself together and went downstairs to check on Jenny. When she entered the room, she saw Jenny packing her things."Jenny, are you being discharged already?" she asked.Jenny stiffened slightly before turning around with an exaggerated smile. "I'm fine. There's no need to stay hospitalized. Besides, I can't stand the smell of disinfectants here.""Are you sure you're okay?" Anne asked, concerned."Of course! I have a new audition lined up.""Maybe you should rest a bit longer," Anne sug

"She ate the food I made! That was my first time cooking, and I made it especially for you!" Sophia shouted, pounding her chest. Her eyes were filled with grievance."How could you let her eat it? How could you trample on my feelings like this?"Zachery paced the hospital room, his frustration boiling over. "Fine! I admit it—I'm still in love with her! I regret marrying you!""Zachery, you bastard!""I'm a bastard? What about you? Sneaking around with Sean behind my back? You're worse than me!""I don't care! You can't treat me like this! You promised you'd only love me and be nice to me! You swore that even if there were other women around, none of them would matter to you, only me! I'm the only one you love!" Sophia sobbed uncontrollably."I… I just didn't know my true feelings back then. I didn't realize it until later, but by then, I had already married you. I've been miserable ever since. Yeah, maybe it's my punishment, but I never actually wronged you—you're the one who wro

What was the point? Things were over between them."Thanks, but please don't do things like this anymore. It makes me feel annoyed," Anne said in a calm but firm tone.Zachery's face darkened like storm clouds, clearly feeling unappreciated."How's your injury?"Anne let out a deep breath. "It's nothing serious. You don't need to concern yourself with it.""Isn't Harvey supposed to be so amazing? Yet you still got hurt. Hah! The truth is, he doesn't really care about you. If he had, he would've protected you better.""Zachery Judd!" Anne tried not to lose her temper, but he was pushing her buttons. "Who exactly are you to criticize my husband?"Zachery glared at her. "I care about you!""Go care about your own wife. Stop worrying about someone else's wife, alright?""Anne!" Zachery looked like he was punched in the gut. "How can you be so cold to me? You… You used to love me so much!"Anne was beyond exasperated. How much clearer could she be? And yet, Zachery acted like he d

Anne furrowed her brows and got up to check the door. By the time she stepped into the hallway, all she could see was the back of a man in hospital scrubs, hurrying away in a flustered manner. She pressed her lips together. Even with just a glimpse of his back, she could recognize the man.It was Zachery.Anne ended up sleeping until nightfall. When she woke up, she noticed light spilling from the bathroom and the sound of water running. Knowing Harvey was here, she stayed in bed quietly, waiting for him. After a while, he finally emerged.Seeing she was awake, he walked over with a smile and leaned down to kiss her."Your hair's still dripping!" Anne quickly dodged.Harvey pulled her into his arms and kissed her firmly before pulling out food containers from the thermal bag. "Eat first. I'll go dry my hair."There was some oatmeal, steamed veggies, and two dinner rolls. She only needed one bite to know it was his cooking."I didn't have much time today, so I whipped up someth

Julius nodded. "I've handed the bar over to Caesar for now. I'll be at the hospital with her these next few days.""She's really scared," Anne said softly."I know.""Jul, she…""I know."Julius couldn't hold it together anymore. He wiped away a tear, then turned and slammed his fist into the wall. "I hate how useless I am. If I'd been able to help her pay off that debt earlier, none of this would've happened."Anne patted him on the shoulder. He was just Jenny's ex-boyfriend. He wasn't obligated to do any of this."Don't think like that. This isn't your fault. But as her friend, she'll need us to help her through this dark time."When Anne returned to her hospital room, Liam and Lilian were already there."You didn't tell Harvey's parents, right?" Anne asked them."Nope. Uncle Harvey specifically told us not to," Liam replied.Hearing this, Anne breathed a sigh of relief. She didn't want to worry the elders or make them overthink things."Anne." Lilian walked over and hugg

At the hospital, the doctor treated Anne's wound.Harvey insisted on holding her the whole time, saying if it hurt, she should lean into his arms.Anne felt a little embarrassed. As a doctor herself, she'd always thought patients like this were a bit too dramatic. But now? Okay, fine—she kind of wanted to stay in his arms, too, so she could be pampered and comforted.Still, she gently pushed him away. This was Windbrook Hospital, and the doctor treating her was someone she knew. She couldn't embarrass herself like this in front of a colleague.Harvey stood sulking against the doorframe, watching her pitifully. Her injury turned out to be more serious than expected—she needed to be admitted. This time, she was placed in a VIP suite. Harvey wanted to book the entire floor, but she stopped him just in time."I have to handle a few things. I'll come back tonight to stay with you," Harvey said, then kissed the tip of her nose. After the chaos from last night, Anne could barely kee

Anne frantically backed away, heart pounding in terror. No one knew she was here, so no one would come to save her."God, please don't let this happen," she prayed in her mind. She could no longer stay calm as despair consumed her."No, please. "Come on. Don't miss the show.""What the hell? Why does he get to go first?""Relax. You're second.""Fine. I'll be third.""I'll go last, then. Happy now?"Anne realized she couldn't escape. Rather than be violated, she'd rather end it herself. Gritting her teeth, she flung herself toward the wall. With a sickening thud, her head hit hard, and warm blood instantly blurred her vision. The men shouted in surprise."Damn, this woman's got guts!""Hah, the boss said even if it's a corpse, we still need to get it o
