"Miss Morgan, over here."
"Ma'am, can we have your attention?"
The reporters waiting outside the court swarmed over with their cameras to the elegant lady as she and her legal team walked out of the courtroom.
It wasn't new to have people surround her like that. As the youngest female billionaire in America, she was used to reporters crowding around her.
Their questions came in from all directions, running from her personal life to her conquests in the business world and requests for interviews.
Most times, she'd let her secretary handle the media.
With her busy schedules, she barely had time to face them. Add to that, some of their questions toed the line and if anything, she hated anyone trying to pry into her personal life.
Everyone knew how nosy the media could get. Those annoying reporters would stop at nothing to get what they wanted and the heavens knew her patience was thin.
"Never make the mistake of losing your cool before the media. They will attack you from all sides. If you fall into their trap and react in the way they want you to, they'll utilize it as a weapon against you. It's your reputation that goes down the drain."
"Besides, people love a good scandal. The media can create scandals even from the smallest words. One wrong move, and you're the villain in their story."
She never forgot the teachings of her former tutor, Blake Jarrett. The old man taught her most of the things she knew about business. Because of him, she was able to manipulate her way through the business world.
"Ma'am," her assistant leaned in, "do we address them or set up a press conference?" Then she looked around, saying again, "Tim isn't here."
Veronica raised her hand, silencing her. She stopped walking, her companions stopped too, and in half a second, the reporters were crowded around her again.
"Miss Morgan, is it true that the court has ruled in your favor?"
"Miss Morgan, will you now take over Sterling Industries?"
"Miss Morgan, speculations are going around that you bribed the jury."
Veronica lowered her head, smiling to herself at the last question she heard. Everyone was silent when she looked up. Her voice was sonorous with underlying sultry notes when she addressed them.
"Everyone has been aware of the ongoing feuds between my company and Sterling Industries. I do not want to go into details; some of them are confidential, but you should know that no one who attempts to doublecross me gets away with it.
"As for the hearing, the court ruled in my favor because I presented enough evidence against the defense. You should know that I do not start a case unless my victory is guaranteed. But if the defense has a problem, they can take the case to the court of appeals."
"Miss Morgan," a reporter called out, "they say you took this case to court because things went rough between you and Greg Sterling. Is that true?"
Veronica recognized the reporter speaking. She was one of the lackeys Greg's family paid to speak in their favor during times like this.
Alternatively, her job was smudging dirt on the opposing camp.
It wasn't hard figuring out the trap that she set with her deceptive question. Smooth laughter rolled off Veronica's tongue at how shallow her game plan was.
"Sad, isn't it?" She asked the reporter, "How do some of you associate important affairs with baseless rumors? But just to clear the air, Gregory Sterling and I have nothing going on. This matter has nothing to do with our relationships. It's purely business."
"Miss Morgan," another one called, "now that you've won the case, what do you plan on doing to Sterling Industries?"
Determination set in her as she replied to the question. Her plans were set.
"Well, the court has ruled that Sterling Industries must make restitution to me. I plan on taking ownership of White Bay Resort." And no, she didn't care if her plans should have been confidential.
"Is that your vendetta against the Sterlings? Are you so vicious, Miss Morgan?" It was the same reporter. She marked her down, Zhenny Hernandez. The woman was getting on her nerves.
"No," she smiled sweetly at her. "I'm not so evil. But in this case, restitution has to be made for my losses. Like I said before, it's not revenge. Business is business."
There was nothing the Sterling family could do to her now that she had proven their attempts to steal from her company.
For their fraud, she would make them pay a big price. White Bay Resort was the first among the high-priced possessions she planned on taking from them.
Before any more questions could come in, she concluded the short interview.
"Excuse me, folks but I have business to attend to. My secretary will reach out to you if there are any new developments."
They started to protest but she was already walking away with her bodyguards warding off anyone who tried to come close to her.
"Ma'am, congratulations on your win." It came from her attorney, Lewis Colenhan.
"No, I have you and the other lawyers to thank for that." Indeed, if it wasn't for her strong legal team and the cooperativeness of the witnesses, she doubted she would have won.
"And permit me to commend how you handled the media," he added.
Veronica smiled. Keeping a cool demeanor while addressing people was a talent she mastered from childhood.
Despite the turmoil inside her, she could keep up a calm and unreadable face. It was one of the skills that rendered her opponents unable to predict her next moves.
"So, now that we will acquire their resort, what else do you want from the Sterlings?" He asked. The vehicle began moving and she looked outside, letting her attention waver on the beauty of New York.
"Ma'am," her assistant presented her phone. Someone was calling her.
The male voice that boomed through with curses as soon as she picked up the call made her narrow her eyes.
"Veronica, you lying bitch. How dare you accuse my family of fraud?"
"And how dare you spread rumors about me and you?" She fired back.
"It's true, isn't it?" Greg retorted.
Veronica chuckled, pinching her nose bridge. "Don't make me laugh, Greg."
"Oh, you'll be laughing if you don't withdraw your statements. Call a press conference, tell them you lied against my family, and redress."
Proud and pompous, the heir of the Sterlings thought he could threaten her.
"I won't. Take this as a dare, but I won't stop till I make all of you pay. You called me a bitch, I'll show you a bitch," she snarled into the phone.
Greg fumed. "Veronica," he called in a warning tone, "you'll regret this."
"I'll regret a lot of things," she maintained her calm disposition. "But don't let it bother you."
Then she cut off the call. Originally, she planned on taking a few properties from the Sterlings but now that their heir had threatened her, she would take everything.
"Youk now, Lewis..." She trailed off, resting on the window pane.
"Taking forty percent shares from Sterling Industries gives me certain privileges, doesn't it?"
Ethan's phone began to ring aloud. He opened his eyes from a short sleep. “Who is calling?” He thought in his head. He checked it and he saw it was an unknown number.“It could be my investigator!” He thought in his head and immediately, he picked up the call.“Hello!” He said, expecting the recipient to start speaking.“Hello, Mr Ethan. I have all the evidence that Mr Morgan was the person that killed his wife!” He said to him.Ethan was excited, because that was good news. “Where should I meet you to get the evidence?” He asked him.He sighed. “Sir! Meet me at Grace broadcasting station,” he said to him.Ethan was taken aback by his words. “Why that place?” He asked him.“I do not have much time to explain things. There is a change of plan and to make Mr Morgan pay that is the only way we can do it. He is too connected to be reported to the police,” he said to him.“Okay! I understand you.”He ended the call right away.Ethan sat down in dismay. He was in thoughts as to what to do
“Damn!” Trish expressed his in-depth stress.“Sir! Won't you mind going home now?” He asked him.Trish took a look at him. “You are right. I was wondering if I could finish with this, but I am very much exhausted. I need to get going,” he said to him.“That would be better for your well-being,” he said.Trish widened his eyes. He left his company in the evening and he entered the car. Driving through the arduous distance, he got home. He stepped down from his car and walked to his apartment. He checked his pocket to bring out his keys but he couldn't find it.“Where is my key? Did I forget it at work?” He started panicking. While he was in the middle of this, he heard a loud cough from behind him. He shook even to his feet. He wasn't expecting such an intrusion and that was what scared him, because the person was so close to him.He turned to see who it was. Glancing at his face down his body, he didn't recognize him.“Who are you by the way? And why did you barge on me like that?”
Morgan opened his eyes after a very long sleep. He looked sideways, he saw the light had brightened the surface. He raised his head and grinded his teeth.“Now is the time to take my daughter down! Just like I killed her mother. I need to shut her light and put her out of the game before she becomes my total headache,” he thought in his head.Morgan hadn't in his life feared before until now. A lot had happened. He felt he was being monitored by someone, but he didn't know until it turned out they were his past foes and enemies.Morgan's phone started ringing out. “Hello! Who is this?” Morgan strained out. He was expecting someone he had commissioned to a task.“You have 3 more days, Morgan. If not, things wouldn't go easy with you,” the caller threatened him.Morgan's illegal cartel was in danger. His deals had been affected greatly and it had caused sloppy growth for his company. This didn't affect only his company but it affects everything that had to do with him.Morgan stepped do
“My father's name is….” She called his full name, with the address of his house and the places he visits often. She unlocked her phone and showed him his picture. “This is how he looks. Let me send it to your phone,” she said to him.“Okay!” He brought out his phone and collected it from her.Back to Ethan. “For this job, I will pay you a million dollars. But now, I will give half payment when you are done, I will pay you the rest. Do we have an understanding?” He asked him.“Yes, sir!” He replied at once. “If you are going to call, Message or hold a physical meeting… for calls and messages, use a private unknown number so it can't be traced easily. For private meetings, come in disguise so you won't be followed,” Ethan explained all his rules to him.“Consider it done, sir!” He said to him.“Good! your account number, please,” he said to him.Without further ado, he told him his account number and boom, Ethan had the money transferred at once.“I have transferred the money,” he said
Ethan exhaled. He walked up to his clothings and wore them. Just then, Veronica's phone started ringing.“Baby! Your phone is ringing,” he alerted Veronica.“Help me bring it,” Veronica gave a loud shout from within.Ethan picked up the phone. He didn't look at his face. He went to the bathroom and gave it to her. But he stylishly swayed his eyes not to see her body.“Thank you!” Veronica said after she collected the phone from him. Checking the person calling, she discovered it was the man they had called early yesterday.“Baby! It is the same man that wasn't picking yesternight,” she informed him.“Huh! Let me pick It then,” he said and immediately collected the phone from her. He picked the call.“Hello!” He said with a loud voice.“Hello, this is Baldwin, a private investigator,” he replied.“Yes, Mr Baldwin. This is Ethan. I exhausted my call card over there. Can we see this morning?” He asked.Mr Baldwin halted. He thought about it for a while. He looked through all his schedule
The both of them walked into the hotel. “Good evening?” Ethan said to the reception.“Good evening. How can we help you?” The receptionist asked him.Ethan exhaled and swallowed the saliva in his mouth. “I want a room,” he said to her.“Oh. Okay. A room! What type of room? Or just any room would do?” She asked so she could know their specifications.“Not any room! We need a classic room at least in the average with a minimum night pay,” he explained to her.The reception checked the room available quickly. “Okay, the only average room available is room 40 and it's going for just three hundred dollars per night,” she said to him.Ethan looked at Veronica. It was a nice price. They realized they could actually stay there for days.“Okay! I will be staying here. Can I have my room key already?” he asked her.“Okay! When you are checking out tomorrow, will you pay?” She asked him.Ethan looked at her and he wondered if something urgent happened that required them running, so, he made the
Ethan got there, “I was asked to make payment of three hundred dollars here, this is my card,” he extended it to them.“Okay!” One of them collected it. He deducted the money at once. When he was at the door, he collected the receipt from him.Ethan walked up to him, he slammed the receipt on his hand. “That is your receipt. Start my work, please,” he said to her.“Okay!” The man folded the receipt into his pocket. He started repainting the car.Ethan went directly to Veronica. He exhaled. “I know you are angry, Ethan! Calm your nerves, it's not worth it to be angry here,” she said to him.Ethan sighed. “The man is actually a ridiculous one. Telling us to pay when he hadn't even touched the car. I promise to bash him if he doesn't paint the car well,” he said to her.Veronica glanced at her. “It's better you stop getting angry unnecessarily, my dear. Look at how he is doing it. I bet he can't make a single mistake,” she said to him.Ethan was taken aback by her words. “Whose side are
Ethan noticed a slight panic in her voice. “Don't panic, baby! We'll be fine!” He said to her.Veronica glanced at him. “I am not panicking. I am just wondering if you have a solution to this problem?” She asked him.Ethan glared at her but he quickly faced the road. “Anyways! Do you have a solution, cause I don't,” he said to her.Veronica licked her teeth. “Okay! The solution to this is to drive to a location we are not going to!” She said to him.Ethan sighed. He was left unsatisfied. That wasn't the solution he was looking out for. “I don't think changing location or route would be the best thing to do,” he said to her.Veronica was surprised. “Why did you say that? This car is practically following us!” She alarmed. Her voice was filled with an air of distrust.Ethan sighed. “I know you don't trust me, but you will have to do this. I know the best thing to do here. This is the best opportunity for us to get evidence against Morgan. Why don't you bring out your phone and take pic
“Are you expecting someone?” Veronica asked him, considering his facial expression.“Huh!” “No, I am not expecting anyone,” he said to her.Veronica exhaled. “Let me check the door!” She stood on her feet and walked forward.Ethan was at watch. He wanted to see the outcome.“Who is there?” Veronica asked immediately as she reached for the door.“It's the room service, mam!” She said to her.Veronica was quite surprised. “No one called the room service. Why are they here?” She has it in mind that there would be an ulterior motive to it all.“We did not call the room service. Why are you here then?” She asked her.“I brought your food. You are in a classic hotel. You don't need to order, we know what to do,” she said aloud.“Wow!” That word came out of her lips involuntarily. She was taken aback by that statement of hers. She opened the door immediately.“Good morning, mam!” She greeted her.Veronica glanced at her. Right in front of her was a young, adorable lady. She held a long tray
