As a new day rolled in, Veronica found herself staring into nothingness.
Last night, she barely slept. Her ochlophobia and traumas always resulted in insomnia.
In the past, her episodes were not so severe. They began as recurring nightmares of her childhood that haunted her every night.
Over time, those nightmares manifested into hallucinations that warped her reality whenever she was in dark places, resulting in very nasty cases of ochlophobia and PTSD.
Seeking help from therapists was never an option. With a tight schedule and her stubborn ego, she refused to see one.
Besides, opening up about her past with a psychotic father who physically, mentally, and sexually abused her, was not something she wanted to do. She did not want the pain that came with recounting a dark childhood.
Subtly, Veronica found ways to deal with her problems. Melatonin and soporifics from the pharmacy worked like a charm. When she wasn't sleeping, her work kept her busy.
Her current concern, however, was what happened last night. It was the first time she was having an episode even though she wasn't in a dark place.
The simple rule that used to limit such episodes; avoid basements and dark rooms, no longer served its purpose as a precaution.
'You can't control it,' she looked down at her palms. Her biggest fear was that one day, she'd have an attack like last night's in public. If that happened, a wicked scandal would emerge.
Imagine the headlines; Billionaire Business Mogul, Veronica Morgan, Confirmed Psychopath.
Her rivals and enemies would thrive on that topic, finally forming a weapon to use against her. They'd fan its flames until it consumed her.
And judging by the number of enemies she had, she wouldn't last long if news about her mental health went out.
On a wider scale, scandals only brought negative impacts on businesses. Hers would suffer so much loss.
Tsk.
Groggily, she dragged herself to the shower. The cold water sprayed on her skin, leaving a cooling sensation, quite dulling the events of last night.
After dressing up, she went downstairs.
"Good morning, ma'am," her workers cheerfully greeted.
Grunting a reply, she headed for the kitchen.
"Black coffee," she said to her nanny.
"Veronica, you don't look so good," the nanny, an elderly woman they called Nanny Lorene, noted with worry.
"It's nothing, nanny," she assured. "I just had a rough night."
"Rough enough to get 2 cups of coffee?" Nanny Lorene asked as Veronica poured two cups of black coffee into a bigger cup. It was alarming.
"I have a meeting with the heads of departments today. They're presenting the reports for the first quarter of the year," half-hearted, she muttered. "I don't want to doze off."
"I see," Nanny Lorene nodded. "And yes, get some ice packs for the swellings on ur balls. You have dark circles."
"Thank you."
Her assistant was waiting for her by the company's main entrance.
"Ma'am," she scurried after her, "the heads of departments are waiting upstairs."
"Let them wait. I'm the boss here. It's their job to wait for me," she retorted. Her mood was sour and she did not care for anyone right now.
Evie took her bag and handed a cup of coffee to her. They got into the elevator, heading to the thirteenth floor where the conference room was located.
The HODs of the various departments were waiting for her when she came in.
"Good morning, ma'am," everyone stood up. They sat back down after she took her seat at the head of the table.
"Good morning everyone. Let's get down to business."
The meeting commenced. Each HOD brought their department's reports, giving an account of all their achievements for the first quarter.
The last report came from the tech department. On the projector screen, he displayed their current rank on the international stock market.
"Ma'am, compared with the last two quarters, we have received a five percent increase rate in the price of our shares,"
"That's good," she said. The others hummed. An increase in the price of shares meant more value to the company involved. Value yielded gain.
"However ma'am, there is a little problem."
Of course, wasn't this so perfect? She frowned.
The man clicked on his laptop. On the screen, another company's ranking appeared.
"Their sales are higher than ours by two percent," he reported. "I have been monitoring them for a while now. Their stock exchange rate has risen by three percent, following the boost in sales."
He continued with the report, listing other variables. Veronica's eyes narrowed at the report. The presence of this company threatened her own technology and development company.
For three years straight, they had led the other companies in a very competitive market, leaving a wide gap between them. How did one company displace them?
"What company is that?" She wanted to know which company was good enough to engage her in a competition.
"Reynolds Enterprises, ma'am."
It was her first time hearing that name. "Reynolds?"
"Yes ma'am. They were formerly based in Europe but recently, they began trading in America."
"Interesting," she mumbled. "Do you have more information on them?"
"No, ma'am. But we'll research them and I'll get back to you."
Veronica nodded in agreement. With all the reports presented, the meeting had come to an end. They rose and left, leaving Veronica with her assistant in the large room.
"Ma'am?" Evie gathered the documents.
"Evie,"
"An invite came in for you this morning," Evie said.
"Invite?" She wondered aloud. "What for?"
"It's the annual Trivia Met Gala." As Evie said it, she remembered.
The Trivia Met Gala was a fundraiser gala organized every year to raise funds for children in Asia and Africa. Each year they sent her a card and she attended.
"... Do we hire fro
m Pastel?" Evie was saying something that she didn't catch.
"Do whatever you want," she waved a nonchalant hand. "Just make sure I end up getting all the spotlight."
Ethan's phone began to ring aloud. He opened his eyes from a short sleep. “Who is calling?” He thought in his head. He checked it and he saw it was an unknown number.“It could be my investigator!” He thought in his head and immediately, he picked up the call.“Hello!” He said, expecting the recipient to start speaking.“Hello, Mr Ethan. I have all the evidence that Mr Morgan was the person that killed his wife!” He said to him.Ethan was excited, because that was good news. “Where should I meet you to get the evidence?” He asked him.He sighed. “Sir! Meet me at Grace broadcasting station,” he said to him.Ethan was taken aback by his words. “Why that place?” He asked him.“I do not have much time to explain things. There is a change of plan and to make Mr Morgan pay that is the only way we can do it. He is too connected to be reported to the police,” he said to him.“Okay! I understand you.”He ended the call right away.Ethan sat down in dismay. He was in thoughts as to what to do
“Damn!” Trish expressed his in-depth stress.“Sir! Won't you mind going home now?” He asked him.Trish took a look at him. “You are right. I was wondering if I could finish with this, but I am very much exhausted. I need to get going,” he said to him.“That would be better for your well-being,” he said.Trish widened his eyes. He left his company in the evening and he entered the car. Driving through the arduous distance, he got home. He stepped down from his car and walked to his apartment. He checked his pocket to bring out his keys but he couldn't find it.“Where is my key? Did I forget it at work?” He started panicking. While he was in the middle of this, he heard a loud cough from behind him. He shook even to his feet. He wasn't expecting such an intrusion and that was what scared him, because the person was so close to him.He turned to see who it was. Glancing at his face down his body, he didn't recognize him.“Who are you by the way? And why did you barge on me like that?”
Morgan opened his eyes after a very long sleep. He looked sideways, he saw the light had brightened the surface. He raised his head and grinded his teeth.“Now is the time to take my daughter down! Just like I killed her mother. I need to shut her light and put her out of the game before she becomes my total headache,” he thought in his head.Morgan hadn't in his life feared before until now. A lot had happened. He felt he was being monitored by someone, but he didn't know until it turned out they were his past foes and enemies.Morgan's phone started ringing out. “Hello! Who is this?” Morgan strained out. He was expecting someone he had commissioned to a task.“You have 3 more days, Morgan. If not, things wouldn't go easy with you,” the caller threatened him.Morgan's illegal cartel was in danger. His deals had been affected greatly and it had caused sloppy growth for his company. This didn't affect only his company but it affects everything that had to do with him.Morgan stepped do
“My father's name is….” She called his full name, with the address of his house and the places he visits often. She unlocked her phone and showed him his picture. “This is how he looks. Let me send it to your phone,” she said to him.“Okay!” He brought out his phone and collected it from her.Back to Ethan. “For this job, I will pay you a million dollars. But now, I will give half payment when you are done, I will pay you the rest. Do we have an understanding?” He asked him.“Yes, sir!” He replied at once. “If you are going to call, Message or hold a physical meeting… for calls and messages, use a private unknown number so it can't be traced easily. For private meetings, come in disguise so you won't be followed,” Ethan explained all his rules to him.“Consider it done, sir!” He said to him.“Good! your account number, please,” he said to him.Without further ado, he told him his account number and boom, Ethan had the money transferred at once.“I have transferred the money,” he said
Ethan exhaled. He walked up to his clothings and wore them. Just then, Veronica's phone started ringing.“Baby! Your phone is ringing,” he alerted Veronica.“Help me bring it,” Veronica gave a loud shout from within.Ethan picked up the phone. He didn't look at his face. He went to the bathroom and gave it to her. But he stylishly swayed his eyes not to see her body.“Thank you!” Veronica said after she collected the phone from him. Checking the person calling, she discovered it was the man they had called early yesterday.“Baby! It is the same man that wasn't picking yesternight,” she informed him.“Huh! Let me pick It then,” he said and immediately collected the phone from her. He picked the call.“Hello!” He said with a loud voice.“Hello, this is Baldwin, a private investigator,” he replied.“Yes, Mr Baldwin. This is Ethan. I exhausted my call card over there. Can we see this morning?” He asked.Mr Baldwin halted. He thought about it for a while. He looked through all his schedule
The both of them walked into the hotel. “Good evening?” Ethan said to the reception.“Good evening. How can we help you?” The receptionist asked him.Ethan exhaled and swallowed the saliva in his mouth. “I want a room,” he said to her.“Oh. Okay. A room! What type of room? Or just any room would do?” She asked so she could know their specifications.“Not any room! We need a classic room at least in the average with a minimum night pay,” he explained to her.The reception checked the room available quickly. “Okay, the only average room available is room 40 and it's going for just three hundred dollars per night,” she said to him.Ethan looked at Veronica. It was a nice price. They realized they could actually stay there for days.“Okay! I will be staying here. Can I have my room key already?” he asked her.“Okay! When you are checking out tomorrow, will you pay?” She asked him.Ethan looked at her and he wondered if something urgent happened that required them running, so, he made the
