Chapter 10: Echoes of Destruction

The rusted iron gates of the obsidian citadel loomed before them, a gaping maw in the desolate crimson landscape. Behind them, the monstrous creatures howled in frustration, their metallic claws scraping against the barren rock. Evie and Liam, hearts pounding in their chests, sprinted towards the gate, desperate for any semblance of refuge.

With a resounding clang, the gate swung open, revealing a dark, cavernous entrance. Without hesitation, they plunged into the cool, stale air that emanated from within. The heavy gate slammed shut behind them, momentarily cutting off the sounds of the pursuing horde.

Relief washed over Evie, momentary and fragile. They were inside the citadel, but the darkness within seemed just as oppressive as the crimson wasteland they had just escaped.
