Marcella picked up one of Raisel's dresses and sniffed it before bursting into a fresh bout of uncontrollable tears. It had become her habit since she woke up that morning to find out Raisel wasn’t in bed, not only that, but she had also left Avalon. She couldn’t say she hadn’t seen it coming. Raisel had always been stubborn and done as she pleased.
This one time, however, Marcella had hoped she would listen and forget all about the heart of magic but once again she was wrong. It was all her husband Ryker talked about. He had wanted to find it so badly. Sometimes he would be out for days before he returned, empty-handed. At that time she had played it down as nothing. One faithful day he had given Raisel the ruby he wore on his neck and she too had grown curious overnight. They would both stay all night talking about the heart of magic like it was all that mattered. Afterwards, he went in search one more time and that was the last time she saw him alive. They had stayed months without hearing a word from him before news of his death reached them. Raisel had gone down that path now, probably lost somewhere in search of what was impossible to find. She wasn't so sure it even existed any more...There was a rapid knock on the door, interrupting her musings. She wiped at her eyes and rushed to the door to find a brown-haired man with distinct green eyes, one she wouldn’t have missed anywhere. One that was similar to her long-time friend Hannele's. It was the Prince of Avalon, Prince Allerick. She opened the door wider, “Your Highness”“Good day ma’am”“How can I help you? will you sit…”“No, do not bother. I’m here to see Raisel…”, he paused for a brief moment before adding, “On my grandmother’s request of course, she hasn’t dropped by the castle for a long while now”“Rai…Raisel…Raisel has gone”“What?, What do you mean by gone?”, Allerick asked alarmed.“She left Avalon” ***They had been riding for a long time at high speed when Dragomir was sure they were not followed, he slowed down.“There’s no sign of human life around. The roads are dangerous at night, we will camp here till morning and continue”She was too tired to protest or argue. She tied Fury to a tree and kissed him goodnight, “Sleep well, my boy”She spread the coat he had left with her when they first met.He noticed, “You still kept this?”“Huh?, I needed something to sleep on”, she said inaudibly. He smiled. He turned around to remove his shirt, “You can change into something comfortable. We will leave at first daylight. The woods are not safe. When you’re well rested in the morning we will talk. By the way, what’s your n…?”He heard a thud behind him and before he could stop himself he turned to see what had caused the sound. The sound was from her as she dropped to the floor. She was already fast asleep, her long black hair sprawled out underneath her. He smiled at the sight before him. ***Raisel woke up with a start, her back felt somewhat uncomfortable against the ground, but, she felt somewhat warm. She was draped in a large piece of clothing. Instinctively she sniffed it, she knew immediately it was Dragomir's. Her eyes adjusted to her surroundings slowly, she saw trees, she looked around, and there were more trees. She sat up uprightly. She turned beside her to see Dragomir deeply asleep. She roused him from his sleep.Raisel was surprised, she didn’t expect to see him when she woke. He could have left with her ruby, the book and even added a horse and supplies for his trouble. However he didn’t, there he was beside her unclad in the upper half of his body like it was the most normal thing…“Are you not cold?”, she blurted out before she could stop herself. It was not what she intended to say.He raised an eyebrow inquisitively, “What?”“I thought you would have left?”, she asked again, “With everything I have left…”“I’m no thief”, he stated. She nodded, “You have my gem…”He grinned at her, “You could have taken it while I slept and left with it”She shrugged.“Good”, he sat up, “Now we have established that we are both not thieves and not out to cheat the other. Let’s move on to much more pertinent issues”“And what is?”“Why is the gem so important to you?”, He questioned.“My father had given it to me before he left…”, she paused and said inaudibly, “Just before he died."“Oh”, he looked at it, “It is very special to you then..."“It is”“Why did you take the book on the heart of magic with you?, What do you need it for?”, he asked again. She stared back defiantly, “I could ask you the same.”“Well you seem like a trustworthy person, so I’ll tell you I need information about it, you know…”, he hesitated for a short while, “Everything there is to know about it”, he replied. She nodded, “My reason is the same as you. Your intentions are what?”“Purely good”, he stated simply. "So are we doing this together?”, he questioned, “You could use my help”“Really?, Or you could use mine. I was pretty fine on my own”, she answered packing up her things.“I technically just saved your life. If it weren’t for me you’d probably be dead”Raisel scrunched her nose, he had a point. She set up Fury for a ride.“That reminds me what’s your name again?” ***“Your Majesty, King Nickolas, someone demands an audience with you”And who will that be”, he questioned perplexed. One frail man walked in, utterly terrified, his eyes darted from one corner of the throne room to another. This couldn’t possibly be the man who wanted to see him. Everyone feared him, no one who he hadn’t exclusively invited would demand his audience ever. Not this frightened man.His guards drew out their swords and brandished them in front of them. He told them off, the frail man approached the throne, “Your majesty, someone seeks an audience with you”“Who are you?”“I’m Cillin, my master demands an audience with you”“And who might your master be?”, he growled.“It is…”“Lord Votigern”, a loud voice resounded in the room.King Nickolas stilled in his seat, he waved his guards away.Votigern got to Cillin and smacked him to the floor, “Get away you flimsy scoundrel!”, He smirked evilly, “Nickolas I’m here to see you, do I still need to wait…”“No of course not”, King Nickolas answered quickly.Votigern smiled widely, “Good, I believe we have an understanding on these matters. I’ll hate for things to go differently... from what we planned. I’m sure you know that wouldn’t bode well for you”“What is it you want?”“The heart of magic...”King Nickolas stared wide-eyed, “I do not have it”“Definitely!, I do know that. You couldn’t possibly have it. Have you not heard, however?”, Votigern asked puzzled when Nickolas stared back at him clueless, he cursed under his breath, "My worth has lessened that I have to resort to spreading gossip like a peasant. What do you even do as kings? If you are not abreast with your environment, how do you even rule your people!”“Votigern…”“It’s Lord Votigern to you!”, he retorted. He pushed his face further into Nikolas's, “You cannot begin to fathom all the pleasures and power that awaits you if you side with me”Votigern poked Nikolas on the forehead, “Your small head cannot envision it. This can only be made possible if I can lay my hands on the heart of magic again”“I do know that”, Nikolas stated, “I want it, I want all the power that comes with it, but how can I help it if it is missing? I mean you had it for that short ti…”“I did, its energy was so strong”, Votigern interrupted him, “It radiated all around it, so overwhelming. Nothing like you have seen before. I need to get my hands on it!”“How can I help?”“Word has it that two people a lady and a man stole the only written book on the heart of magic. Couldn’t have been a mere coincidence. They left with it! They’ll currently be searching for it…”“In Molvania?, How did it happen?”“Do you doubt me?”, Votigern growled aloud and clenched the robe of King Nikolas.“No of course not”,“Good!”“I want them found and brought to me”, Votigern smirked maniacally, “They’ll be needing one or two lessons on the consequences of going after something that doesn’t belong to you!”“You know it still surprises me that we are going together on this trip or adventure or search or whatever this is”, Dragomir said, he unsheathed his sword and swiftly cut down a branch in their path. Raisel turned to look at him, “Beats me too” “I’ve never really understood your desire to go in search of the heart of magic, it’s been lost for years now. Even the most skilled warriors have returned fruitless. What makes you think you can find it” Raisel rolled her eyes, “I could ask you the same question." Dragomir raised his hands. “Oh come on! Let’s communicate, if we are going to work together we need to talk about everything.” Raisel thought about it for a while. “Honestly I do not know, I’ve always felt drawn to it after my father returned from his search...", she paused, "I guess it was because he was drawn to it, it was all he talked about, after his death, I felt this pull to also go in search for it..." she looked at him. "I know it doesn't make sense..."“I see”, Dragomi
“If we are in search of something that is missing, no one knows what it looks like, where it was found. It’s origin…”, Dragomir trailed off, “What is the first step we have to take?” “There has to be someone that knows something, someone still alive you know?”, Raisel asked. “Not just anyone. A wise person who knows something that is not written in the book” Her eyes widened. “Yesss" Dragomir smiled, “Of course, lucky for us we are in Mercia. The wisest man to ever live happens to live in this quiet city” “That’s great to know”, Raisel smiled, “When do we go to meet him?” “Immediately. He is a very busy person. We can’t stay in this city any longer, we can be caught out any time soon”, Dragomir answered. Soon they set out. Dragomir glanced at her, “You’re not going to faint now are you?” She glared at him, “The corset is just fine” “Good” They walked into the large cottage and were offered seats to wait out. The lady attendant came back with two cups and a jug containing tea
Raisel watched as his chest heaved as he deeply slept. One of his hands was behind his head. His hair was overgrown and a few locks were drooping just over his eyes. She carefully pushed it backwards. It fell forward, she moved it again. This continued for a while. He stirred in his sleep but he did not wake up. She loved watching him sleep but they had a long journey ahead of them and they needed to leave immediately. She pushed him slightly then shouted into his ears, “How do we find a dragon?” He got up abruptly with a start, “What? What do you mean?” She rested her chin on her arm and peered closely at him, for some reason she didn’t understand he seemed pretty haunted, “There’s a lot of questions that need to be asked. Where do we find a dragon?, How do we know it’s a dragon? What if they don’t even want to be found at all?” He sat up and relaxed, “Someone seems to be very excited this morning” She smiled at him and played with the trinket on her neck, it was her heart-shaped
“Trent you'll gather a few soldiers and get ready to leave at first daylight”, Aldrich barked out orders, he walked the length of the large castle, his hands behind his back. His red robe trailed behind him. He stopped at one of the large castle windows and looked out, he didn’t want to be a part of any of this as much as possible he wanted to steer clear but Nikolas was right, if the heart of magic fell into the wrong hands it would be trouble for everyone. He studied his reflection in the mirror, his greying hair and saggy eyes were just a few of the indications that he had not slept in a while. He turned around, “I need you to find the heart of magic and bring it back to me before anyone gets to it” “That’s impossible my king”, Trent replied a look of incredulity on his face, “It has been missing for…” “Blah blah blah and all the unnecessary bullshit”, King Aldrich interrupted, he walked close to Trent and stopped just short of an inch from him, “I gave an order that I believe i
Allerick stormed into Marcella’s house, Mart trying to keep up with him but failing at it, “Marcella?”, he called out repeatedly for a while. When he realized no one was inside, he waved his hand inviting the guards in. “You know what to look for right?” “Yes sire”, they chorused. “Get to work then”, he waved them off. He stood with hands akimbo supervising the activity. After a short while the door was pushed open and Marcella’s head popped in, a shocked expression on her face. Allerick was sitting on a chair and going through Ryker's diary. “What in heaven’s name is going on here?” Allerick stood up and slowly walked up to her, “I have the king’s authorization”, he showed her a document with a seal. “The king would never do this to Ryker’s family, he would never breach our rights to privacy”, she retorted through clenched teeth and snatched the document from Allerick. He chuckled. She quickly scanned through the document, her eyes widened in realization, “This does not have
Raisel couldn’t figure out what exactly Dragomir had told the lady but they were inside her little cottage and she had served them bread. Raisel slowly pulled off Dragomir’s shirt, she soaked a clean washcloth in water and wiped his wounds. She flinched any time she touched the bruises, however, he didn’t react. “I’m sorry for hurting you”, the lady apologized over and over again. “It is fine, I understand you were only protecting your son. You have been victimized for years now”, Dragomir replied to her for the umpteenth time. Raisel reached for his injury and applied an ointment to it. The ointment tended to burn a little, so she cringed when she rubbed it on… He took her hand in his, which caused her to look up at him, “I am fine Raisel it doesn’t hurt that much” She nodded in response. The lady set a bowl of water before them, “I am sorry I can not offer you anything tangible as to the former or recent location of the heart of magic”, she paused first and searched their face
He mounted Fury and extended a hand to pull her up, when she was comfortable behind him, she asked the question that was bothering her, “What did you guys talk about, You and…” “Ariel, Ariel is her name” “Yes”, Raisel answered, “It was pretty intense and I caught the glances that passed between you two occasionally." They rode gently through the deserted streets., “You want the undiluted truth?”, he asked. “Affirmative!”, she answered, “We are partners remember?” “Well Ariel asked if we were a couple, can you believe that?”, he asked, a look of astonishment on his face, “I was appalled by the mere thought of it but she was serious. She said she saw how you kept on giving me subtle love glances…” Her forehead creased, “What?” “The time with the injuries, you were in pain because I was in pain…” “Dragomir”, Raisel called, “Keep quiet, don’t say a thing. You have no idea what you’re saying” “Chill miss, you don’t have to be all so defensive, like the mere thought of being with me
It was dusk when they got to Nevera. They surveyed the city from a safe distance. He turned to look at her, “This sure is a busy town, I don’t think dragons will come here to hide if they needed to stay out of the public eye” “Well if there are rumors there could be a hint of truth in it”, she answered, she observed the town. He nodded absentmindedly, he stared at her as her eyes lit up at the sight before her. There were a lot of people engaged with one thing or the other. Kids chased one another on the streets, they were giggling young girls talking to each other and subtly admiring the young boys down the road. “So where do we go from here?”, he reluctantly drew his eyes from her. She turned to him, “You are the one with the broad knowledge of kingdoms and towns…”, a hint of a smile on her lips. They stood quietly beside each other, the breeze billowed around them, sending papers flying around. One landed on the feet of Raisel, she picked it up and read through, “I think we mig

They drank a lot of rum and chatted about everything and nothing. It was far into midnight and the bar was beginning to empty out. Coal didn’t have much customers to attend to, so he was able to engage them. Coal took one long sip, “It was always about the ladies when he came here” “No definitely not”, Dragomir argued. “Of course Dragomir” Raisel took a short sip and scrunched her nose in disgust at the awful taste, “Who was it, tell me?”, she bobbed up and down in her seat like an excited school girl. “First it was Esmeray…” “Oh”, she interrupted, her face fell. “Then Raisel…” “Oh shut up Coal!" Raisel was smiling now, “Really?” Dragomir looked at her, “Why do you care so much?” She stared back at him, she couldn’t conjure up any bef
Raisel tossed on her bed, and then she heard it again. She got up with a start, it was still slightly dark but a horse was neighing outside. She brushed it off and went back to sleep but she heard it again but this time it was much closer to her window. It was the early hours of the morning but if a horse was outside her window she had to check it out. She grudgingly got out of bed, it was a chilly night so she slipped on a robe and walked towards her window, she peeped outside but there was no one around or even a horse around. She thought of going outside to check but she did not want to use the door for fear of waking her mother up. Since she got back her mother had insisted on spending the night in her room cuddled up with her for fear of her running off again like the last time. It had taken her a lot to convince her mother that she and found the stone and had no plans of running away without her knowledge. Her words were not enough still until she had threatened that she might
As Raisel rode through the all too familiar streets, it hit her again, how could she forget? This was home, the home where she lived with her parents. Where she had made her first mistakes as a child, gotten her first scolding and grown into the strong woman that she was today. It was not the beautiful scenery that got to her, no this time it wasn’t perfection that Islandia was, the clouds were not excessively blue and did not look like soft foams that you wanted to reach out to and take a piece from, there were not much beautiful flowers and trees as the streets in Avalon assumed a more business-like front. Carriages and horses packed here and there, men were smartly dressed and attended to their different businesses. There were no dragons in all the wonderful colours you can imagine, in the most beautiful patterns, Avalon was dull and bereft of loud colours of any kind. Heavens forbid that you wear bright yellow or neon green, the fountain in the middle of the street did not have w
Votigern had been travelling for days unending, his only lead to the heart of magic had blown up in his face. So he and his men had taken a well-needed rest. He had a huge party that left him dead drunk throughout the day. He slowly opened his eyes, he had a banging headache. He slowly walked towards the door and opened it, a guard was stationed outside, “Send my food in…with a woman of course” He nodded, “Yes sire” He slumped on the bed, and not long after there was a short knock on the door, “Come on in” “Good morning Lord Votigern”, a lady's voice greeted him. He merely grumbled his greetings. She set the tray of food on the table and walked up to him, “What do you want my Lord?” He thought about it for a while, then he turned to look at her, his eyes unashamedly travelling through the full length of her body. By his standards, she was a beautiful woman. Long brown hair, a petite face and a curvy body accentuated by the tight-fitting dress she wore and extremely tight corsets
They rode for hours unending, stopping at intervals for a short break. It was almost sunset when they arrived at the heart of the earth, the original location of Islandia where the portal once opened. They stopped their horses and got down from them. Raisel reached for the box, it was slightly heavy, she handed it to Dragomir, “I believe this belongs to you” He hesitated, “Raisel…” She shook her head, “No Dragomir, this is not debatable. This rightfully belongs to dragons, this belongs to you…”, she smiled, “And what will I do with this after all?”, she asked, “It will only put a target on my back, I do not know where or how to keep it safe…” He nodded, “Thank you Raisel, thank you so very much. I could not have done this without you” Her eyes glistened with tears, “We make quite a good team”, she smiled through the tears. And more, he said to himself. She reached for his face and cupped it, “It is time Dragomir, you did it, it is time. Time for you to do what you have promised
Allerick rode into Avalon, the royal guards beside him. As soon as he entered the royal courtyard word spread around that he was back. He walked head-on to the throne room, he ignored the greetings on the way like he had not seen them. He was in an awful mood and the reason was clear. He got to the large doors, and the courtier stationed outside quickly acknowledged him, “Your Highness” Allerick did not bother with a reply, he stood still, his hands to his back. After a while, he turned to the man, “Can I see my father Stefan? Or do I have to force the doors open myself?” Stefan bowed immediately, “My apologies your Highness”, he opened the doors, “Prince Allerick, son of King Aldrich, heir to the throne of Avalon is entering the thro… Allerick walked in before he finished. Trent and the other men trailed behind him. His father and grandmother sat around a large table, there were two people with them, and he recognized them as ministers. Aldrich saw him first, his eyes lit up when
They slowly rode into the deserted streets of Deleria. They stayed quiet for a moment observing the area. Save for the constant chirping of birds and crowing of roosters it was eerily quiet. There was no sign of human existence. “You know I was thinking”, Raisel said. “Tell me…” “The phrases, the clues we gathered…”, she trailed off, her mind preoccupied, “The clues were talking about Deleria, this is the kingdom that has lost its glory…” “….but will rise again”, Dragomir finished. They rode through the streets but there was still no sign of life. Save for the items outside the beatdown houses that humans used. “Do you think our choice of clothing has chased them inside?” He thought about it only for a while, “Yes they live in fear. Two people in leather and swords are bound to terrify them…” She nodded, “I never really thought about how or where we are to find the stone..” “If it is in Deleria we will find it. It will be hard to conceal it...”, he stated, “I have been thinkin
Raisel ran towards Dragomir’s tent, in her hands were a lot of papers. They were guards stationed outside, when they saw her they greeted her and gave way for her. When she entered the chambers, as soon as she saw him, a small smile crept on her lips. It was the cutest sight ever. He was still dressed in his royal regalia that he wore earlier, his crown had tipped slightly but it was still on his head. He laid halfway on the bed, his one leg was on the bed while the other was on the floor. He was snoring slightly, and a half-eaten apple was in his hand. She walked closer to him, her eyes lit up in admiration for this man, now she knew why he had not come to see her earlier. He was exhausted. She took the apple from his hand and set it aside. She laid the books and papers she came with on the bed. She removed his crown carefully and laid it aside. She gently roused him, “Dragomir, I need you to wake up. I have something to tell you” He mumbled some incoherent words but he did not w
