Allerick stormed into Marcella’s house, Mart trying to keep up with him but failing at it, “Marcella?”, he called out repeatedly for a while. When he realized no one was inside, he waved his hand inviting the guards in.
“You know what to look for right?”“Yes sire”, they chorused.“Get to work then”, he waved them off. He stood with hands akimbo supervising the activity. After a short while the door was pushed open and Marcella’s head popped in, a shocked expression on her face.Allerick was sitting on a chair and going through Ryker's diary.“What in heaven’s name is going on here?”Allerick stood up and slowly walked up to her, “I have the king’s authorization”, he showed her a document with a seal.“The king would never do this to Ryker’s family, he would never breach our rights to privacy”, she retorted through clenched teeth and snatched the document from Allerick. He chuckled. She quickly scanned through the document, her eyes widened in realization, “This does not have King Aldrich's seal on it, this is not the royal…”“It is not the royal seal but it is the King’s seal”, Allerick retorted, “I sealed it myself”“With all due respect your highness, You are no king! What is our crime?”, Marcella questioned, “Why are we treated like common criminals?”He moved closer to her and leaned slightly and whispered in her ears, “It’s about the heart of magic”“How does that concern us?”, Marcella asked, no iota of emotion on her face to betray her true thoughts even though she was scared for her daughter.“You and I are well aware that Raisel has gone in search of it”, he said patiently. Two could play this game, he mused.“You cannot prove it!" she yelled. He walked away from her, “Enough of all this pretence Raisel would be in a lot of trouble if word reaches the king that she has gone in search of a trinket that has nothing to do with her”Marcella stilled.“She won’t only be in danger from the king my father or from the other kings that would feel threatened by her actions”, he paused and spun around quickly, his blue robe billowing around him.He gingerly fixed his crown on his head, “She will be in danger from Votigern, his cohorts and all other measly humans that are greedy for power, the power that the heart of magic possesses and offers…” he paused for effect, “Of course, how can we forget the dragons? Large mystical creatures, many times the size of an average human, they’ll tear her in pieces beyond recognition, you’ll lose…”“You would not say a word about my daughter again”, she said through clenched teeth, her heart heaving in her chest, “No one would know a word about where my daughter is, you’ll leave…”“If you have forgotten I am royalty and I still give the orders around here” his tone of voice was grave. "You can not threaten your King"“What is it you want?”He smiled. “I’ll be going on an expedition, in search of the heart of magic. I’ll bring your daughter to you safe and sound, trust me o…”“What’s in it for you?”“I want Raisel” his smile widened. ***“Welcome to Aramoor”, he said out loud. They both got down from Fury and scanned the area.Raisel turned to him, “This is where legendary dragons live?”Most of the buildings were derelict and the streets deserted, they walked further on foot, Fury walking behind them, “I mean I am disappointed. I expected something of much grandeur and class, something so exquisite…”“Raisel, this is not the kingdom of dragons. This is where they hide because of yo…of humans”, Dragomir interrupted her, “Dragons live in the kingdom of Islandia, it is believed its beauty is unmatched and second to none. Men could never describe it because its beauty left the beholder tongue-tied and in awe”She looked at him quizzically, “You know a lot about these creatures”“Pfft”, he shrugged it off nonchalantly, “Most of us just pay attention in history lessons”She hit him on the arm.“Oww!, You don’t have to be so violent every time”She ignored him, “We’ve been walking for a while now and we have not seen any human or any form of life for that matter”, she observed, "Where is everyone"“Hiding Raisel, hiding”They began to hear little shouts here and there, when they got closer they discovered the source of the noise was a small gathering of little frail-looking kids. Boys and girls, their bodies dirty but smile plastered on their faces. They kept on running around, Raisel and Dragomir just watched silently.Raisel looked up to see Dragomir, just like her, he was silently watching the children. However, his face held more emotions than hers did.His eyes were alit, and he had a wide smile on his face similar to that of the children, however, he seemed to be lost in his head. She studied his facial features she couldn’t help it, his eyes crinkled when he smiled. She observed his smile soften his face. His lips were just the right amount full for a man…He turned to notice her staring at him and his smile widened even more, “Raisel why…“Does it bring back memories”, she cut him off quickly, not ready to hear any of his snarky comments, not trusting herself to react properly, “You seemed lost there”He nodded, “Yes, Yes it does”He had that dreamy look on his face again, that made him even more…She mentally smacked herself in the head.“It’s one of the good memories I have of home…”Suddenly there was an uproar, if the tiny high-pitched screams of the children could be likened to an uproar, they turned immediately to see the children scattered about running in different directions.A little boy was in the centre of it all unfazed, however on closer look his eyes held fear but more pronounced was his loneliness, his sadness. Dragomir felt it immediately, he understood him.“The little boy is on fire”, Raisel shrieked loudly, “We need to get to him”Dragomir pulled her to him slowly, “Take a deep breath Raisel and calm down. He is not on fire, he is just fine”“What do you mean?”, she asked puzzled.“He is fine”, he stated simply. They ran towards the boy, trying to dodge the kids, Dragomir helped pull them up, the children almost falling. When they got to the boy he was in tears, the fireball still floating in his hand, however, it was slightly dimmed.Raisel walked behind Dragomir, terrified of what she was seeing, of course, the boy was in tears but he didn't look like he was in any kind of physical pain. Just as Dragomir had said, the fire didn’t touch his hands, the fireball was levitating above his palm.Dragomir squatted just in front of him, “Do not cry”, he said simply, “It is okay, you’re okay”The boy stared at Dragomir and she could have sworn she saw a glint of hope in his eyes. The curly red-haired boy stared at his hand briefly and brought it down, the fire quenched completely. She rushed towards him and took him in her hands, she examined his palm where the fireball emanated from, there was no burnt or scarred skin, and his hands didn’t even feel hot. She looked closely at him, he stared back at her through long wet lashes, his green eyes were piercing, none like she had seen before. They stayed that way for a while, then he broke his gaze, “I d…did…didn’t mean to do…to do it”, he bowed his head, “I promise”Raisel was puzzled.Dragomir patted her lightly on the shoulder, “He thinks you are angry with him”“I would never”, she said, surprised by the mere thought of it, “ I’m just wondering how this happened, I mean he is only a child. How is this even possible?”“He is a dragon Raisel, he has dragon powers, and he can control the fire element,” he answered.“How…”“Give me some time alone with him Raisel”, Dragomir asked. She nodded vigorously and stepped back, Dragomir squatted and held his hands, they stayed quiet for a while. Raisel strained her ears to listen to their conversations but she couldn’t hear a thing. It was like no word was said between them, however, she could hear them chuckle and smile from time to time. They stayed that way for a while before Dragomir stood from the ground, “His name is Ivar, he is a dragon. He will take us to his mother”“How?”, her eyes widened in surprise, “I didn’t hear a thing, why couldn’t I hear a thing?”“Maybe you weren’t listening well enough?? Or I was whispering much more quietly”, he answered.“That doesn't make any sense..."He shrugged. ***They approached a little cottage, it was small and almost falling apart, it was in a deserted part of the city. A small lady was hanging clothes on a line, she turned towards them when she saw them approaching, “Ivar”She slowly walked towards them, her eyes darted towards the large horse behind her, she was terrified of him, “I hope he is not in any kind of trouble, I apologize on his behalf, you know how child…”“No he hasn’t caused any kind of trouble”, Dragomir answered, gently ruffling his curls, “We just want to have a word with you”She visibly stilled, “You say everything is alright?”, she wiped her hand across her sky-blue dress.Raisel nodded, “We just need to ask a few questions here and there, nothing really serious”, she stared at Ivar briefly and flashed him a wide heartfelt smile, “What a really special child you got here”She called Ivar to her, he hesitated for a while but then he turned to Dragomir and they seemed to have an unspoken understanding. He ran towards his mother. She smoothed his hair almost frantically, “Ivar my child”, she placed a soft kiss on his head, “Yes, he is”, she said in a whisper.Dragomir moved closer to her, “I know you are terrified to death, but trust me we mean no harm to you or your child, we just have a few questions to ask”She smiled sadly, "They always say that you know? that they mean no harm, right before they cause harm""Who are they?", Raisel asked.“I know nothing about anything, I moved here with my child a short while ago. I don’t know much about this town or about anything that...”“We do not have questions about this town, what we are concerned with is your origins”, Dragomir interjected. For a split second, her eyes widened in fear, it was like a doe caught in headlights, “My…my origin, there’s nothing to it at all. Gr...grew up in a small town, you know…very small town, not everyone knows”, she frantically wiped her hands on her dress in a desperate attempt to act unbothered, she was failing at it.“It is fine Mother”, her son whispered, he took her hand in his, “They are nice people, I know…”She nodded vigorously, “Yes, of course, Ivar”, she bent towards him and whispered in his ears, “Just go inside and wait for mummy. Mummy will be right back, in just a short while”, she ruffled his curls, “Mummy won’t be long, she just needs to talk briefly with these…nice people”He nodded and ran along but not before waving at Dragomir.“I told you all I know…”“Lady, we are not here to hurt you”, Raisel said soothingly. She smiled a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes, “Yes they all say that at some point too"Raisel tried to imagine what her life looked like. The constant running and living in fear. She wasn’t only looking out for herself but also her child. She couldn’t blame her.“I came from one war-ridden town, we fled for…”“Islandia??, War ridden?”, Dragomir asked in surprise. Her eyes widened but this time she didn’t bother with a cover-up, “Islandia?”“Yes, where you are from, where you lived as a dragon before the war…”She shook her head in fear, “Do not hurt me or my child, we have nothing to do with any of this that happened. He is only a child…”Dragomir’s heart shattered at her pain and fear, “I will never hurt you, how long have you lived as a dragon?, Do you have any idea where the heart of magic is, who took it?” he regretted it the moment the words left his mouth. He shouldn't have startled her like this but a part of him was impatient.“No!”, she screamed before running off in the opposite direction. They ran after her almost immediately.Raisel observed she was a very fast runner, It must have been from constantly running away all her life, Raisel thought. They got to a sharp bend and she suddenly disappeared. They began searching for her everywhere, this went on for a short while before Raisel heard a sound from a corner that was stacked with all kinds of junk. She signalled Dragomir and they tiptoed towards the noise.Almost immediately a large rock was thrown towards them, in a swift movement Dragomir pushed Raisel behind and the rock hit him square on the chest.“Dragomir!”, Raisel screamed in a loud voice. She continued throwing stones at them, and Raisel cowered behind him in fear. However he stood still, “Listen to me, madam!, I want to help you I promise, I would never want to hurt you. I genuinely want to help you…”“Dragomir, get down!”, Raisel continue screaming, “You’ll get hurt”She tried to pull him along with her but he didn’t budge, “Go over there, he pointed to behind the well in the yard.“I want to help your people, I want to help your kind…”These were the last words Raisel could hear in a while when she hid behind the well. She brought up her head to look at him, only to find out that the lady was out of her hiding place.Although she still looked terrified, she approached him slowly. She could only hear hushed whispers at first but soon they became slightly higher and she could make out some words, “…left!”“…painful…”They continued to exchange words, they were raising voices and Raisel wondered what they were arguing about. It was getting heated, after a while Dragomir moved behind the well and picked her up. She looked at his pain-stricken eyes, she couldn’t figure out if it was a result of the injuries he had sustained or the conversation he had just had with the woman. The lady touched his chest through his cloth delicately so as not to hurt him, “You’re hurt”He looked at her from underneath his lashes. You’re hurt because of me, she said in her head.Raisel couldn’t figure out what exactly Dragomir had told the lady but they were inside her little cottage and she had served them bread. Raisel slowly pulled off Dragomir’s shirt, she soaked a clean washcloth in water and wiped his wounds. She flinched any time she touched the bruises, however, he didn’t react. “I’m sorry for hurting you”, the lady apologized over and over again. “It is fine, I understand you were only protecting your son. You have been victimized for years now”, Dragomir replied to her for the umpteenth time. Raisel reached for his injury and applied an ointment to it. The ointment tended to burn a little, so she cringed when she rubbed it on… He took her hand in his, which caused her to look up at him, “I am fine Raisel it doesn’t hurt that much” She nodded in response. The lady set a bowl of water before them, “I am sorry I can not offer you anything tangible as to the former or recent location of the heart of magic”, she paused first and searched their face
He mounted Fury and extended a hand to pull her up, when she was comfortable behind him, she asked the question that was bothering her, “What did you guys talk about, You and…” “Ariel, Ariel is her name” “Yes”, Raisel answered, “It was pretty intense and I caught the glances that passed between you two occasionally." They rode gently through the deserted streets., “You want the undiluted truth?”, he asked. “Affirmative!”, she answered, “We are partners remember?” “Well Ariel asked if we were a couple, can you believe that?”, he asked, a look of astonishment on his face, “I was appalled by the mere thought of it but she was serious. She said she saw how you kept on giving me subtle love glances…” Her forehead creased, “What?” “The time with the injuries, you were in pain because I was in pain…” “Dragomir”, Raisel called, “Keep quiet, don’t say a thing. You have no idea what you’re saying” “Chill miss, you don’t have to be all so defensive, like the mere thought of being with me
It was dusk when they got to Nevera. They surveyed the city from a safe distance. He turned to look at her, “This sure is a busy town, I don’t think dragons will come here to hide if they needed to stay out of the public eye” “Well if there are rumors there could be a hint of truth in it”, she answered, she observed the town. He nodded absentmindedly, he stared at her as her eyes lit up at the sight before her. There were a lot of people engaged with one thing or the other. Kids chased one another on the streets, they were giggling young girls talking to each other and subtly admiring the young boys down the road. “So where do we go from here?”, he reluctantly drew his eyes from her. She turned to him, “You are the one with the broad knowledge of kingdoms and towns…”, a hint of a smile on her lips. They stood quietly beside each other, the breeze billowed around them, sending papers flying around. One landed on the feet of Raisel, she picked it up and read through, “I think we mig
Allerick and his aide Mart stopped to rest for a while under the shade of a large tree. Unknown to him the ensemble his father sent after him where hiding behind the cover of the dense forest. “Mart quickly tend to Buck, we have to continue our journey soonest, we should approach the city before dusk”, he barked out orders. Mart stood up almost immediately, “Yes sire”, and began tending to the horse. Allerick placed his head against the large bark of the tree, now that he was out of Avalon with no host of soldiers and servants to tend to all his needs, save for a little peasant boy, he had no idea why he had put up with him for as long as he had, it didn’t make any more sense. The more he thought about it the more he thought his decision foolish, Raisel could be anywhere, any town, any kingdom. He would never be able to find her, especially if she didn’t want to be found. This was why he wanted to travel solo, so as not to attract unnecessary attention to him, so she wouldn’t know
“We are at Molvania my Lord”, Matt announced Allerick pulled the reins of the horse backwards causing it to halt, “I see…”, he surveyed the surrounding areas, “Does that little map make any indications of where a library might be?" “Yes Sire, you can not imagine all the minute details on this map, there are taverns, hills, mountains and even small inns”, Matt answered excitement clear in his voice. “Wow that’s very exceptional", Allerick smiled slyly, "It seems old Ryker even in his death is still a very generous man” Mart nodded without saying a word. He handed the map to Allerick, he surveyed it quietly for a while before handing it back. “This way”, he beckoned to Matt and began to head in the general direction of the city. They rode for a while before they got to the majestic tower that was the library. It was so visible, you couldn’t have missed it even if you wanted to. Allerick alighted his horse and smoothed his slacks. He hated this peasant clothing. He missed the cares
“Do we have to wear this”, Raisel asked clearly in distress, “Everything is clinging to my skin so tight, I might pass out any time soon” Dragomir turned to look at her, “I beg you please don’t, that will be defeating the whole not attract unnecessary attention to ourselves purpose” “Do I?” “Yes you do, this circus is for the high-class ladies and gents. I think they’ll appreciate it if you don’t show up in high boots and your sword by your side”, he answered, "That would be terrifying" “I’m going to trip over, this dress is just…” “I think you look perfect”, he blurted out before he could stop himself and he was right. She had on the ocean blue dress that just perfectly complimented her ocean blue eyes. Her long dark hair was not tied up in a ponytail, as usual, it was braided in two. He could have sworn he saw a red tint on her cheek but she looked away quickly. They got to the white and red striped tent and handed over their tickets to the man on the outside. He bent his han
Allerick had the description of the lady who had taken the book alongside the man. He was convinced beyond reasonable doubt that it was Raisel. He didn’t know whose company she was in and it hurt him to even think about it. He had imagined her in the past sitting beside him on the throne of Avalon, he had merely toyed with the idea in his head. Now that he thought deeply about it, he didn’t want that any more. She wasn’t worthy of it, not in the slightest. She was a criminal and he wanted nothing to do with her whatsoever. After this realization, you’d have thought he would have just gone back to Avalon and get on with his life but no, he wasn’t going to do that. He still wanted to find her, he still wanted her. He wanted her in many forbidden ways to want a woman and of course, the facts that he had set out to find some magical stone. He would be considered a coward if he returned sooner than was expected. He needed to prove himself to Avalon that he was a worthy king and not a cow
They were going over the plan again for the second time. “You are certain the king has a real-life elder dragon?”, Dragomir asked still in disbelief. “Yes, he does, locked in a cage and chained. A private pet…”, Esmeray answered, “He has an obsession for dragons and loves to have them by his side as a show of his strength”. “Pathetic”, Dragomir spat. Raisel appeared to be thinking, "That would explain this kingdom's unnecessary obsession over these creatures" Esmeray nodded in agreement. “And this dragon has not escaped why?”, Raisel questioned. “The King uses strong magic to suppress the power and strength of this dragon and to keep it in dragon form for a long time, your energy wears off with time”, Esmeray explained with a nonchalant shrug, "Or so they say...He is unable to escape or fight back the attacks, he is just sitting duck...”, she stared at Dragomir briefly gauging his reaction, "To be used for the king's indulgence." Dragomir frowned, “That makes sense. The dragon

They drank a lot of rum and chatted about everything and nothing. It was far into midnight and the bar was beginning to empty out. Coal didn’t have much customers to attend to, so he was able to engage them. Coal took one long sip, “It was always about the ladies when he came here” “No definitely not”, Dragomir argued. “Of course Dragomir” Raisel took a short sip and scrunched her nose in disgust at the awful taste, “Who was it, tell me?”, she bobbed up and down in her seat like an excited school girl. “First it was Esmeray…” “Oh”, she interrupted, her face fell. “Then Raisel…” “Oh shut up Coal!" Raisel was smiling now, “Really?” Dragomir looked at her, “Why do you care so much?” She stared back at him, she couldn’t conjure up any bef
Raisel tossed on her bed, and then she heard it again. She got up with a start, it was still slightly dark but a horse was neighing outside. She brushed it off and went back to sleep but she heard it again but this time it was much closer to her window. It was the early hours of the morning but if a horse was outside her window she had to check it out. She grudgingly got out of bed, it was a chilly night so she slipped on a robe and walked towards her window, she peeped outside but there was no one around or even a horse around. She thought of going outside to check but she did not want to use the door for fear of waking her mother up. Since she got back her mother had insisted on spending the night in her room cuddled up with her for fear of her running off again like the last time. It had taken her a lot to convince her mother that she and found the stone and had no plans of running away without her knowledge. Her words were not enough still until she had threatened that she might
As Raisel rode through the all too familiar streets, it hit her again, how could she forget? This was home, the home where she lived with her parents. Where she had made her first mistakes as a child, gotten her first scolding and grown into the strong woman that she was today. It was not the beautiful scenery that got to her, no this time it wasn’t perfection that Islandia was, the clouds were not excessively blue and did not look like soft foams that you wanted to reach out to and take a piece from, there were not much beautiful flowers and trees as the streets in Avalon assumed a more business-like front. Carriages and horses packed here and there, men were smartly dressed and attended to their different businesses. There were no dragons in all the wonderful colours you can imagine, in the most beautiful patterns, Avalon was dull and bereft of loud colours of any kind. Heavens forbid that you wear bright yellow or neon green, the fountain in the middle of the street did not have w
Votigern had been travelling for days unending, his only lead to the heart of magic had blown up in his face. So he and his men had taken a well-needed rest. He had a huge party that left him dead drunk throughout the day. He slowly opened his eyes, he had a banging headache. He slowly walked towards the door and opened it, a guard was stationed outside, “Send my food in…with a woman of course” He nodded, “Yes sire” He slumped on the bed, and not long after there was a short knock on the door, “Come on in” “Good morning Lord Votigern”, a lady's voice greeted him. He merely grumbled his greetings. She set the tray of food on the table and walked up to him, “What do you want my Lord?” He thought about it for a while, then he turned to look at her, his eyes unashamedly travelling through the full length of her body. By his standards, she was a beautiful woman. Long brown hair, a petite face and a curvy body accentuated by the tight-fitting dress she wore and extremely tight corsets
They rode for hours unending, stopping at intervals for a short break. It was almost sunset when they arrived at the heart of the earth, the original location of Islandia where the portal once opened. They stopped their horses and got down from them. Raisel reached for the box, it was slightly heavy, she handed it to Dragomir, “I believe this belongs to you” He hesitated, “Raisel…” She shook her head, “No Dragomir, this is not debatable. This rightfully belongs to dragons, this belongs to you…”, she smiled, “And what will I do with this after all?”, she asked, “It will only put a target on my back, I do not know where or how to keep it safe…” He nodded, “Thank you Raisel, thank you so very much. I could not have done this without you” Her eyes glistened with tears, “We make quite a good team”, she smiled through the tears. And more, he said to himself. She reached for his face and cupped it, “It is time Dragomir, you did it, it is time. Time for you to do what you have promised
Allerick rode into Avalon, the royal guards beside him. As soon as he entered the royal courtyard word spread around that he was back. He walked head-on to the throne room, he ignored the greetings on the way like he had not seen them. He was in an awful mood and the reason was clear. He got to the large doors, and the courtier stationed outside quickly acknowledged him, “Your Highness” Allerick did not bother with a reply, he stood still, his hands to his back. After a while, he turned to the man, “Can I see my father Stefan? Or do I have to force the doors open myself?” Stefan bowed immediately, “My apologies your Highness”, he opened the doors, “Prince Allerick, son of King Aldrich, heir to the throne of Avalon is entering the thro… Allerick walked in before he finished. Trent and the other men trailed behind him. His father and grandmother sat around a large table, there were two people with them, and he recognized them as ministers. Aldrich saw him first, his eyes lit up when
They slowly rode into the deserted streets of Deleria. They stayed quiet for a moment observing the area. Save for the constant chirping of birds and crowing of roosters it was eerily quiet. There was no sign of human existence. “You know I was thinking”, Raisel said. “Tell me…” “The phrases, the clues we gathered…”, she trailed off, her mind preoccupied, “The clues were talking about Deleria, this is the kingdom that has lost its glory…” “….but will rise again”, Dragomir finished. They rode through the streets but there was still no sign of life. Save for the items outside the beatdown houses that humans used. “Do you think our choice of clothing has chased them inside?” He thought about it only for a while, “Yes they live in fear. Two people in leather and swords are bound to terrify them…” She nodded, “I never really thought about how or where we are to find the stone..” “If it is in Deleria we will find it. It will be hard to conceal it...”, he stated, “I have been thinkin
Raisel ran towards Dragomir’s tent, in her hands were a lot of papers. They were guards stationed outside, when they saw her they greeted her and gave way for her. When she entered the chambers, as soon as she saw him, a small smile crept on her lips. It was the cutest sight ever. He was still dressed in his royal regalia that he wore earlier, his crown had tipped slightly but it was still on his head. He laid halfway on the bed, his one leg was on the bed while the other was on the floor. He was snoring slightly, and a half-eaten apple was in his hand. She walked closer to him, her eyes lit up in admiration for this man, now she knew why he had not come to see her earlier. He was exhausted. She took the apple from his hand and set it aside. She laid the books and papers she came with on the bed. She removed his crown carefully and laid it aside. She gently roused him, “Dragomir, I need you to wake up. I have something to tell you” He mumbled some incoherent words but he did not w
