Raisel woke up early the next morning and grabbed her sword. It was the first her father made for her, they had used it for practice with him countless times. She grabbed some necessary supplies into a sling bag. She tied her ebony black hair into a ponytail. She put on a flannel top and leather pants and tucked her sword into its sheath on her waist.
She made a quick stop at her mother’s room, she was sound asleep. She stared at her, pain overwhelmed her. She wanted to call out to her and run to her and snuggle her. She couldn’t bear the thought of her mother in any kind of pain or distress. More than anything she couldn’t bear the thought that she was the cause of the pain. However something else called out to her, a stronger purpose, it was very potent. It clawed at her insides. It wanted to be found. It was like a beacon of light, that she needed to get to so bad and fast. There was more to her life than attending to the royal family’s needs or enduring the excesses of the overbearing prince Allerick, staying in the dimly lit shop polishing weapons or like her mother had suggested countless times, being married off to someone else, who wouldn't care much for her. With a much stronger purpose, she held on to the gem on her neck and twirled it around her fingers. She wiped the tears from her eyes and left her house. The place she had called home for twenty-one years. She took her Stallion, Fury. Her parents got him for her when he was only a pony, she had nurtured him into the big black horse that he was now. He was not a feminine horse. Her parents had made a fuss about her getting a mare since she was a woman but she had thrown a tantrum and they had finally given in to her. She smiled at the memory, they were amazed at how she had handled him.“Hey buddy”, she called out to him, “We are about to go on a long ass ride. An adventure of some sort, very important, however”He neighed and brought his muzzle to her face.“Oh no Fury!, You have to stay quiet”, she caressed him, “Or we will get caught”, she grabbed his saddle and strapped it on him and carefully led him out.She stayed in the shadows avoiding the guards situated at strategic places in the kingdom. She left the gates and soon she was at the outskirts of Avalon. She gave it one last long look and then straddled her horse and turned her back to Avalon. It was only temporary, however. She was doing this for Avalon, for her people. She rode off into the enveloping darkness of the woods. ***Raisel rode slowly through a lonely pathway. The night was eerily chilly and quiet. Fury began to make restless noises. She became alert and before she could speed off, some men appeared from out of the bush and beset her.“Oh she is a lady…”, he had a menacing look on his face.“What’s a lady doing riding that mighty beast?”, another asked baffled, "At wee hours..."“Does it even matter?”, another asked, “Can we just get it over and done with?Raisel studied their features, they were tardy and in grubby clothing, they were likely men who spent all their time in taverns on beer and women.“What does a woman like you have to give?”, the first man asked lewdly.“We are going to find out”, another man replied.Raisel stared at the men intently, one of the men lunged at her and roughly pulled her down from the horse, he took her unawares, she was sitting on her butt before she knew it. She had never been in a real fight with people who wanted to harm her so she was quite slow.He tried to get at her, but she got up abruptly and kicked him in the groin with her foot.He bawled out in pain and clutched his lower abdomen, “Okay…this one is a tough one. Beat her mercilessly”, he bellowed. She graciously unsheathed her sword swiftly just like her father had taught her all those years. She brandished it in front of her.“Can you use that girl?”, one of the men teased flashing his soiled crooked teeth.“You’ll wonder at the things I can use”, she retorted, “Try me…”She paused for a moment and in no more than a second, the fight began, the men were merciless and too skilful to be inebriated. However, she was as good as they came so she matched up to them. Her flips and dodges were effortless and swift. They beset her, one of the men from behind subtly attempted to strike her, but she bent down and with a swift move of her legs, she kicked him off the ground. She snatched his sword and in a clean move she trapped him by his shirt to the ground underneath him. She focused on the two men before her, they hit swords. She deflected a lot of their strikes, it was hard to keep up with her.“What the hell!?”, one of the men asked in wonder. She was very swift, not giving any of the men time to make a hit. Then in an unprecedented move, she had lost concentration and the man she had trapped to the ground had set himself free and made a clean slash at the rope holding the gem on her neck. One quickly grabbed it and dangled it a few yards away from her, “This would be worth a lot of money, won’t it love?”“No!, Give it back”, she yelled.“No!”, they ran off into the woods, she ran after them but they were faster. She ran back to get Fury and rode after them but they had disappeared into the woods and she had lost their trails. She sighed in frustration, tears welled up in her eyes. She had lost something more valuable to her in a bid to look for another. And as she stood there without the gem around her neck, she realized how stupid it was to go in search of the Heart of Magic on her own.Suddenly she couldn’t figure out why she had gone in search of it and whether it was important even. ***She had been walking on foot for two nights, it was a lonely road until she suddenly got to a house that was lit, when she approached it she realized it was a tavern. She needed the rest and she knew Fury would too. She tied him to a tree outside and walked in. As soon as she did, the place quieted down. The occupants were not used to receiving female visitors especially not one with a sword by her side. She strode in ignoring the glares she was getting, she needed something to drink. Soon they all got back to what they were doing. She got to the bartender and sat on one of the high stools.“What do you want?”, he asked in a croaked voice. He was a large man, he looked to be in his fifties, and he had a white shag of hair and a beards.“What do you recommend?”, she asked.“I don’t...know”, he hesitated a little bit, “You’re a lady, we have a lot of strong…”“Just get me a glass of milk”, she said, “No make that two, one for me and one for Fury'“What?”“Oh Fury is with me…”, she stared into his bewildered eyes, “Oh no!. Of course you don’t think I have imaginary friends, nobody does that anymore...”, she smiled sheepishly, “Maybe I used to as a child but no not anymore”, she smiled again.A man in a cloak a few stools from her chuckled.Raisel turned to look at him only noticing his presence, “Something funny mister?”She turned to the bartender, “I’m sorry for all of that. Fury is my horse and he is outside tied to a tree, he will take a glass of milk too, the only thing is I think it will be much better if it’s brought to him in a bowl…you know what I mean right?”The bartender stared at her, not saying anything.Raisel stared at him wondering why he wasn’t replying, “She reached into her leather pouch, “Of course, I have money to pay”She reached inside and brought out a silver coin, “How much do they even cost?”“We don’t sell milk here miss. This is a tavern, not a daycare”, the bartender replied.Raisel’s eyes widened, “oh!...I get”, she blushed in embarrassment, “But why not though?”“Miss I can’t answer that”“That's surprising and highly discriminatory. Everyone’s choices should be accommodated…”“Yea whatever”, the bartender tossed the towel in his hand and walked away. The man beside her broke into a laugh. It was a beautiful sound, almost too…“Okay Mister the joke is over”, she said, she was cranky. She had lost her gem and had no idea why she left Avalon and she couldn’t go back out of shame. She would never hear the end of it from her mother. She watched him as he reached for his glass in front of him, he wore a large black cloak that covered his head and prevented her from seeing his face as he leaned closer, Raisel saw a red-coloured stone, shaped like a heart. Just like hers, exactly like the one her father had given her. She gasped.“Miss are you alright?”, the bartender asked.“Yes…yes…of course I am”, she smoothed her hair, “I’m just perfect”.The bartender studied her, “You look perfect to me”, and then he walked off.Raisel was bubbling with excitement, she had found her gem. Fate was in her favour after all, what were the chances that she would sit beside the thief who had taken her gem? She wanted to reach for him immediately and beat him to a pulp, but she didn’t want to gather unnecessary attention. She didn’t know what to expect from the crowd. She decided to wait it out until he left and then corner him and give him a well-deserved beating. He drank the last bit from his glass and signalled the bartender, “Here”, he dropped some coins and from the wide grin on the bartender's face, Raisel could deduce he had left a large tip. Showoff, she snorted. She got up before he did and quickly untied Fury and waited in the still darkness. The man in the cloak was walking towards her direction, then she pulled out the sword and pointed at his heart. In the darkness, she could make out only the outlines of his face.“I thought you were just crazy, now we have to add a thief to the list. Those are terrible attributes for a lady”, he said in a deep masculine voice, none like Raisel had heard before. It was surreal, almost heavenly…“Wait what!, Thief? How dare…”, in her confused state he unsheathed his sword and pointed it at her too, “I think it’s going to be a fair fight now…”Raisel raised her hand in surrender, “Okay…easy there. There’s no need for a fight or any blood spilling…”He chuckled at that.“I just need to take my gem. The one you stole from me!”“Okay what gem are you talking about?”, he questioned, genuinely confused.“You don’t have to act all so oblivious. The heart-shaped one you are currently wearing on your neck!”, She replied. He stared at her for a while, “You are serious?”“Well…I don’t know…YES!!”, she shouted the last bit.“Oh okay. Take it easy”, he said in a calming tone of voice, “I didn’t take this from you”“Yes exactly, you didn’t take it from me”, she poked him in the chest with her index finger continuously, “You stole it from me, you are the real thief here!”“Okay aww!”, he grabbed her hand to stop her fingers from poking him, “You don’t have delicate lady fingers and that hurt”.They stayed in that position for a while before she pulled her hand from his grasp, “Okay I might be slowly losing my mind but I can’t believe I’m negotiating with a thief…”“Don’t use that word with me”, he stated with a note of finality.“But it was okay when you used it with me…”He shrugged nonchalantly.“Mister I have a very long journey ahead of me and this gem means a whole lot to me. My father gave it to me and I can’t afford to lose it. Would you please give it back without…”“I didn’t take it from you and it also means so much to me…”, he paused, “…after I got it yesterday”“On my way to this town, some good-for-nothing scallywags cornered me and attacked me and made away with it”, she explained, “They were shabby, utterly disgusting, smelly and…”He cleared his throat, “Do I in any way fit into that description?”, he asked, his tone showing he was hurt.“Ye…”, she looked him over. She took a few steps towards him and studied his facial features. She placed her nose at the crook of his neck and inhaled…“Okay this is incredibly uncomfortable”, he muttered under his breath.“No”, she said in a small voice, “Not exactly, no…”“Okay”, he bypassed her and began to move towards the woods. She ran after him, “Okay but I can swear it’s mine.”“I got it from some fin…okay not exactly fine gentlemen. They were indeed good for nothing scallywags, obnoxious ones at that…”“You get my point now don’t you?”“I’m sorry love I can’t give it back to you. I got it for a lot of money…”“I could give you the money back”, she reached inside her pouch and brought out a couple of silvers.“I got it for more…for a bag of gold”“No!”“Yes! They are worth that much, now if you'll let me, I must be on my way”She pulled out her sword and placed it on his shoulder, “I’ll fight you for it”“I do not fight women”, he answered.“I’m not just any woman”, she replied sternly.“That was pretty obvious from the start"“Damn you!”, she swung her sword at him. However he didn’t try to attack her, he only deflected her strikes, “I would advise that you stop”“I would advise that you give me my gem!”The fight lasted for only a few minutes, and then he pulled his large cloak and covered her face with it. He pushed her away slightly and when she finally uncovered her face, he was gone.“What the hell?”Raisel could not find any inn that had space for her and her horse for a few coins. So she slept in an old farmer's stable with Fury and a couple of other horses. She slowly opened her eyes to see Fury and the other horses peering down at her, she fluttered her eyes for a while before she looked down at her hand to see she was snuggling the stranger's cloak, she threw it away quickly. Fury neighed loudly. “Don’t judge me, Fury…”. She got up and washed off from a pail of water. She thanked the owner and gave him a few coins before she left. He thanked her and asked her to stop by when next she wanted. She travelled through the city on fury, Molvania was the kingdom that had the largest library and if she needed any clues as to what she was looking for then she needed to visit the library. She got down from her horse and tied him to a post, she patted him on the side, “Do take care Fury, I’ll only be a while”, she hugged him for a long while. She got inside and moved to the attenda
Marcella picked up one of Raisel's dresses and sniffed it before bursting into a fresh bout of uncontrollable tears. It had become her habit since she woke up that morning to find out Raisel wasn’t in bed, not only that, but she had also left Avalon. She couldn’t say she hadn’t seen it coming. Raisel had always been stubborn and done as she pleased. This one time, however, Marcella had hoped she would listen and forget all about the heart of magic but once again she was wrong. It was all her husband Ryker talked about. He had wanted to find it so badly. Sometimes he would be out for days before he returned, empty-handed. At that time she had played it down as nothing. One faithful day he had given Raisel the ruby he wore on his neck and she too had grown curious overnight. They would both stay all night talking about the heart of magic like it was all that mattered. Afterwards, he went in search one more time and that was the last time she saw him alive. They had stayed months withou
“You know it still surprises me that we are going together on this trip or adventure or search or whatever this is”, Dragomir said, he unsheathed his sword and swiftly cut down a branch in their path. Raisel turned to look at him, “Beats me too” “I’ve never really understood your desire to go in search of the heart of magic, it’s been lost for years now. Even the most skilled warriors have returned fruitless. What makes you think you can find it” Raisel rolled her eyes, “I could ask you the same question." Dragomir raised his hands. “Oh come on! Let’s communicate, if we are going to work together we need to talk about everything.” Raisel thought about it for a while. “Honestly I do not know, I’ve always felt drawn to it after my father returned from his search...", she paused, "I guess it was because he was drawn to it, it was all he talked about, after his death, I felt this pull to also go in search for it..." she looked at him. "I know it doesn't make sense..."“I see”, Dragomi
“If we are in search of something that is missing, no one knows what it looks like, where it was found. It’s origin…”, Dragomir trailed off, “What is the first step we have to take?” “There has to be someone that knows something, someone still alive you know?”, Raisel asked. “Not just anyone. A wise person who knows something that is not written in the book” Her eyes widened. “Yesss" Dragomir smiled, “Of course, lucky for us we are in Mercia. The wisest man to ever live happens to live in this quiet city” “That’s great to know”, Raisel smiled, “When do we go to meet him?” “Immediately. He is a very busy person. We can’t stay in this city any longer, we can be caught out any time soon”, Dragomir answered. Soon they set out. Dragomir glanced at her, “You’re not going to faint now are you?” She glared at him, “The corset is just fine” “Good” They walked into the large cottage and were offered seats to wait out. The lady attendant came back with two cups and a jug containing tea
Raisel watched as his chest heaved as he deeply slept. One of his hands was behind his head. His hair was overgrown and a few locks were drooping just over his eyes. She carefully pushed it backwards. It fell forward, she moved it again. This continued for a while. He stirred in his sleep but he did not wake up. She loved watching him sleep but they had a long journey ahead of them and they needed to leave immediately. She pushed him slightly then shouted into his ears, “How do we find a dragon?” He got up abruptly with a start, “What? What do you mean?” She rested her chin on her arm and peered closely at him, for some reason she didn’t understand he seemed pretty haunted, “There’s a lot of questions that need to be asked. Where do we find a dragon?, How do we know it’s a dragon? What if they don’t even want to be found at all?” He sat up and relaxed, “Someone seems to be very excited this morning” She smiled at him and played with the trinket on her neck, it was her heart-shaped
“Trent you'll gather a few soldiers and get ready to leave at first daylight”, Aldrich barked out orders, he walked the length of the large castle, his hands behind his back. His red robe trailed behind him. He stopped at one of the large castle windows and looked out, he didn’t want to be a part of any of this as much as possible he wanted to steer clear but Nikolas was right, if the heart of magic fell into the wrong hands it would be trouble for everyone. He studied his reflection in the mirror, his greying hair and saggy eyes were just a few of the indications that he had not slept in a while. He turned around, “I need you to find the heart of magic and bring it back to me before anyone gets to it” “That’s impossible my king”, Trent replied a look of incredulity on his face, “It has been missing for…” “Blah blah blah and all the unnecessary bullshit”, King Aldrich interrupted, he walked close to Trent and stopped just short of an inch from him, “I gave an order that I believe i
Allerick stormed into Marcella’s house, Mart trying to keep up with him but failing at it, “Marcella?”, he called out repeatedly for a while. When he realized no one was inside, he waved his hand inviting the guards in. “You know what to look for right?” “Yes sire”, they chorused. “Get to work then”, he waved them off. He stood with hands akimbo supervising the activity. After a short while the door was pushed open and Marcella’s head popped in, a shocked expression on her face. Allerick was sitting on a chair and going through Ryker's diary. “What in heaven’s name is going on here?” Allerick stood up and slowly walked up to her, “I have the king’s authorization”, he showed her a document with a seal. “The king would never do this to Ryker’s family, he would never breach our rights to privacy”, she retorted through clenched teeth and snatched the document from Allerick. He chuckled. She quickly scanned through the document, her eyes widened in realization, “This does not have
Raisel couldn’t figure out what exactly Dragomir had told the lady but they were inside her little cottage and she had served them bread. Raisel slowly pulled off Dragomir’s shirt, she soaked a clean washcloth in water and wiped his wounds. She flinched any time she touched the bruises, however, he didn’t react. “I’m sorry for hurting you”, the lady apologized over and over again. “It is fine, I understand you were only protecting your son. You have been victimized for years now”, Dragomir replied to her for the umpteenth time. Raisel reached for his injury and applied an ointment to it. The ointment tended to burn a little, so she cringed when she rubbed it on… He took her hand in his, which caused her to look up at him, “I am fine Raisel it doesn’t hurt that much” She nodded in response. The lady set a bowl of water before them, “I am sorry I can not offer you anything tangible as to the former or recent location of the heart of magic”, she paused first and searched their face

They drank a lot of rum and chatted about everything and nothing. It was far into midnight and the bar was beginning to empty out. Coal didn’t have much customers to attend to, so he was able to engage them. Coal took one long sip, “It was always about the ladies when he came here” “No definitely not”, Dragomir argued. “Of course Dragomir” Raisel took a short sip and scrunched her nose in disgust at the awful taste, “Who was it, tell me?”, she bobbed up and down in her seat like an excited school girl. “First it was Esmeray…” “Oh”, she interrupted, her face fell. “Then Raisel…” “Oh shut up Coal!" Raisel was smiling now, “Really?” Dragomir looked at her, “Why do you care so much?” She stared back at him, she couldn’t conjure up any bef
Raisel tossed on her bed, and then she heard it again. She got up with a start, it was still slightly dark but a horse was neighing outside. She brushed it off and went back to sleep but she heard it again but this time it was much closer to her window. It was the early hours of the morning but if a horse was outside her window she had to check it out. She grudgingly got out of bed, it was a chilly night so she slipped on a robe and walked towards her window, she peeped outside but there was no one around or even a horse around. She thought of going outside to check but she did not want to use the door for fear of waking her mother up. Since she got back her mother had insisted on spending the night in her room cuddled up with her for fear of her running off again like the last time. It had taken her a lot to convince her mother that she and found the stone and had no plans of running away without her knowledge. Her words were not enough still until she had threatened that she might
As Raisel rode through the all too familiar streets, it hit her again, how could she forget? This was home, the home where she lived with her parents. Where she had made her first mistakes as a child, gotten her first scolding and grown into the strong woman that she was today. It was not the beautiful scenery that got to her, no this time it wasn’t perfection that Islandia was, the clouds were not excessively blue and did not look like soft foams that you wanted to reach out to and take a piece from, there were not much beautiful flowers and trees as the streets in Avalon assumed a more business-like front. Carriages and horses packed here and there, men were smartly dressed and attended to their different businesses. There were no dragons in all the wonderful colours you can imagine, in the most beautiful patterns, Avalon was dull and bereft of loud colours of any kind. Heavens forbid that you wear bright yellow or neon green, the fountain in the middle of the street did not have w
Votigern had been travelling for days unending, his only lead to the heart of magic had blown up in his face. So he and his men had taken a well-needed rest. He had a huge party that left him dead drunk throughout the day. He slowly opened his eyes, he had a banging headache. He slowly walked towards the door and opened it, a guard was stationed outside, “Send my food in…with a woman of course” He nodded, “Yes sire” He slumped on the bed, and not long after there was a short knock on the door, “Come on in” “Good morning Lord Votigern”, a lady's voice greeted him. He merely grumbled his greetings. She set the tray of food on the table and walked up to him, “What do you want my Lord?” He thought about it for a while, then he turned to look at her, his eyes unashamedly travelling through the full length of her body. By his standards, she was a beautiful woman. Long brown hair, a petite face and a curvy body accentuated by the tight-fitting dress she wore and extremely tight corsets
They rode for hours unending, stopping at intervals for a short break. It was almost sunset when they arrived at the heart of the earth, the original location of Islandia where the portal once opened. They stopped their horses and got down from them. Raisel reached for the box, it was slightly heavy, she handed it to Dragomir, “I believe this belongs to you” He hesitated, “Raisel…” She shook her head, “No Dragomir, this is not debatable. This rightfully belongs to dragons, this belongs to you…”, she smiled, “And what will I do with this after all?”, she asked, “It will only put a target on my back, I do not know where or how to keep it safe…” He nodded, “Thank you Raisel, thank you so very much. I could not have done this without you” Her eyes glistened with tears, “We make quite a good team”, she smiled through the tears. And more, he said to himself. She reached for his face and cupped it, “It is time Dragomir, you did it, it is time. Time for you to do what you have promised
Allerick rode into Avalon, the royal guards beside him. As soon as he entered the royal courtyard word spread around that he was back. He walked head-on to the throne room, he ignored the greetings on the way like he had not seen them. He was in an awful mood and the reason was clear. He got to the large doors, and the courtier stationed outside quickly acknowledged him, “Your Highness” Allerick did not bother with a reply, he stood still, his hands to his back. After a while, he turned to the man, “Can I see my father Stefan? Or do I have to force the doors open myself?” Stefan bowed immediately, “My apologies your Highness”, he opened the doors, “Prince Allerick, son of King Aldrich, heir to the throne of Avalon is entering the thro… Allerick walked in before he finished. Trent and the other men trailed behind him. His father and grandmother sat around a large table, there were two people with them, and he recognized them as ministers. Aldrich saw him first, his eyes lit up when
They slowly rode into the deserted streets of Deleria. They stayed quiet for a moment observing the area. Save for the constant chirping of birds and crowing of roosters it was eerily quiet. There was no sign of human existence. “You know I was thinking”, Raisel said. “Tell me…” “The phrases, the clues we gathered…”, she trailed off, her mind preoccupied, “The clues were talking about Deleria, this is the kingdom that has lost its glory…” “….but will rise again”, Dragomir finished. They rode through the streets but there was still no sign of life. Save for the items outside the beatdown houses that humans used. “Do you think our choice of clothing has chased them inside?” He thought about it only for a while, “Yes they live in fear. Two people in leather and swords are bound to terrify them…” She nodded, “I never really thought about how or where we are to find the stone..” “If it is in Deleria we will find it. It will be hard to conceal it...”, he stated, “I have been thinkin
Raisel ran towards Dragomir’s tent, in her hands were a lot of papers. They were guards stationed outside, when they saw her they greeted her and gave way for her. When she entered the chambers, as soon as she saw him, a small smile crept on her lips. It was the cutest sight ever. He was still dressed in his royal regalia that he wore earlier, his crown had tipped slightly but it was still on his head. He laid halfway on the bed, his one leg was on the bed while the other was on the floor. He was snoring slightly, and a half-eaten apple was in his hand. She walked closer to him, her eyes lit up in admiration for this man, now she knew why he had not come to see her earlier. He was exhausted. She took the apple from his hand and set it aside. She laid the books and papers she came with on the bed. She removed his crown carefully and laid it aside. She gently roused him, “Dragomir, I need you to wake up. I have something to tell you” He mumbled some incoherent words but he did not w
