02. The Stranger She Saved

When Evelyn tried to open the car door, she managed to do so, but the man's condition looked terrible with blood all over his body.

Evelyn pulled the man out of the car, and just as he fell into her arms, the car slowly began to burn. Evelyn dragged the man away from the car, and a minute later, the car exploded, burning everything inside.

"Thank goodness I managed to pull him out," Evelyn muttered with relief. She checked the man in her arms and found that he was still alive, though the wound on his leg looked severe.

"Oh no, what should I do? He needs help, and I have to get him to a hospital."

Amidst Evelyn's panic, the stranger slowly opened his eyes. He found himself in the arms of an unknown woman wearing a wedding dress.

"Jullie?" the man suddenly called out, startling Evelyn. Who was Jullie? The man seemed to be mumbling incoherently.

"Sir, are you awake? You're injured, and I need to take you to the hospital." Evelyn tried to explain the man's condition, but before a minute had passed, he had fallen unconscious again.

"What should I do? He doesn't even have his phone with him." She had checked the man's pockets and jacket, but all Evelyn found was his wallet.

Evelyn laid the man's body down. She had no choice but to go and seek help from nearby residents. The area looked very quiet as it was quite far from the city, and there might not be many people living here. She ran for quite a while until Evelyn finally saw a car about to pass by. She quickly stood in the middle of the road and waved her hands.

"Help! Someone needs assistance!" Evelyn shouted. Fortunately, the old man in the car seemed to take pity on Evelyn and helped her. Evelyn explained about the earlier accident and the man's condition, and eventually, the old man agreed to take them to the hospital.

Indeed, the hospital was about an hour away. They had to return to the city center, where there were many people. Evelyn was a bit afraid her stepmother might find her, but she was more concerned about the stranger's safety.

After arriving at the hospital, the man received medical attention, and finally, Evelyn could rest and sit in the waiting room.

"What a tough day," Evelyn sighed. However, she was glad she could help someone today, even though she didn't know what she would do next—whether she would be caught by her stepmother or die.

Suddenly, Evelyn's mood changed. She felt very sad remembering that she had to leave everything behind. She wouldn't be able to continue her studies or return to her father's house. Her stepmother wouldn't let her live in peace, especially after Evelyn had run away from her wedding.

Everyone passing by stared at Evelyn, finding it strange that she was wearing a shabby, dirty, and wet wedding dress. However, Evelyn didn't care about their stares. She didn't care what they thought. She took out the wallet she had retrieved from the man's trouser pocket and looked at his identification card.

"Benedict Easton..." Evelyn murmured the man's name.

"Easton? Is he related to the Easton Group company?" She was familiar with the name of that famous company, a very well-known company in her country. But she didn't know who this Benedict was. Was he a member of the Easton family?

"Isn't the Easton family very famous?" Evelyn became curious.

"Is that Mr. Benedict's?" asked someone who was apparently standing beside Evelyn. Startled, Evelyn looked up and found a man in neat clothes who had arrived unnoticed.

"Hello, sorry to startle you." The man greeted Evelyn again. "Are you Mr. Benedict's guardian?" Evelyn asked, to which the man nodded.

"I'm Adam, Mr. Benedict's secretary. I heard you saved Mr. Benedict. I want to thank you very much," said Adam, which immediately made Evelyn stand up from her seat and hand over Benedict's wallet.

"I'm glad you're here..." Suddenly, Adam gave something to Evelyn, which immediately made her frown in confusion. "What's this?"

"Money. It's a reward for saving my boss. And please, don't let this news reach anyone else." After saying that, Adam quickly walked away, leaving Evelyn still confused with a check in her hand.

"But I don't need it." Despite saying that, Evelyn remembered that she was now alone and didn't know where to go. She looked at the check; maybe this money would be useful for her.

"No, I shouldn't help others for money." Evelyn shook her head. After thinking for a moment, she walked following where Adam had gone to look for him. She had to return this money before she left.

But after almost 5 minutes of walking around, she still couldn't find Adam. "Has he already left?" Evelyn wondered.

Until she passed by a hospital room, she could see inside the man she had helped earlier lying unconscious. His condition didn't look very good. Evelyn stood at the door, observing Benedict.

"It seems Mr. Benedict's condition is quite serious." A voice suddenly sounded, and it turned out that next to that room was a doctor's office. Evelyn peeked in and could see Adam there. Because the door was slightly open, Evelyn could also hear what they were discussing.

"It seems Mr. Benedict will be blind." The doctor's statement was heard again, and Evelyn was very shocked to hear it. For some reason, she felt very sorry and guilty, even though she didn't know Benedict at all.
