Old Home calling…

Anna's POV

I didn't feel good at all after I got Sally's call. Definitely, she would be calling because of Emily had gotten arrested earlier. I had been expecting her call and it actually came very late. I gazed at my phone as I tried to decide if I should pick the call or if I should not.

I gained Smith's attention and he stopped walking. He turned to me and looked at my phone which was where I had my main attention.

“Sally!” Smith exclaimed. “That must be your stepmother, right? You could have saved her contact with something more sweet, you know…”

“Sweeter than sugar!” I told him plainly. “I am sorry but the last thing I would do is to sugarcoat something that is not sweet. It's an obvious fact that my relationship with my stepmother is not good at all. In fact, I have no good relationship with my biological dad all because of her. She stepped into my dad's life and spoiled things for us!”

“I don't think so,” Smith replied. By now, the call had cut on its own. It was more than the specified time. “You were only few days old when your mother died. You will believe all you are told since you have no evidence to prove it otherwise. If they tell you that your mother committed suicide, you will believe even though she was murdered.”

I sighed.

Smith's words had power but he didn't realize this. I had to take a chill pill here because it was necessary. Sally was calling again and I was still undecided. I turned to Smith for help.

“Do you think it would be nice for me to pick her call?” I asked carefully.

“Did you do something wrong that makes you feel guilty?” Smith asked me. This would be the answer to the question I asked earlier.

“I did nothing wrong directly but she might be unhappy that I was present when Emily was being arrested. She might think I was the one who authorized the policemen to do that to her daughter…” I explained. Truly, I felt guilty even though I knew I should not have this thought.

“It wasn't your fault!” Smith said to me carefully. “You ain't the one who instigated Emily to invade the restaurant and point a gun at us. The gun was fully loaded with bullets and if she had tried to use the trigger push, both of us would be dead by now!”

“I thought you said she can only use a bullet in the restaurant. If she can use a bullet, how would it be both of us that would be dead?” I asked carefully. I was derailing from the real issue but I didn't mind. I knew it would be fine at the end.

“I was only bluffing!” Smith exclaimed. He took a deep breath and looked into my eyes. “But after taking a deeper thought on this, I think she would only be able to use one bullet! There are several reasons to back up my claim!”

“I want to hear…” I told him excitedly. I knew how good Smith was when it came to description and narration. He made fictional things look real.

“I will give my reasons but definitely, not here and not know…” Smith smiled at me and began to move. I didn't like this and I chased him.

“Again!” I shouted angrily.

“Let's have the discussion in the car!” Smith told me before he sprinted off. I tried to catch up with him but I couldn't get near enough. Smith was very athletic.

I was supposed to put my phone in my bag but I couldn't because Smith had it. I would not pick up Sally's call, at least for the meantime.

___________

Smith was going to be driving me in his car. From the interactions he had with the people that came to help us relocate, I knew they had been together for a long time. Smith wanted to introduce me to some people but I did like he had been doing to me for a while.

“Not here, not now!” I told him deliberately. “I will have the introductions with them when I wish and where I wish.”

Smith was surprised to hear me using his quote but he said nothing about this. I knew I touched him properly and this was all that I needed. Both of us rode in the front seat of Smith's car. I tried to imagine what our new house would look like.

“How long have you known Emily?” Smith asked as he drove the car. I knew our conversation would start from here.

“Since I could tell my left from my right,” I replied calmly. “It is strange but we only had a few months to separate our births. When I think about it carefully, it is not too strange. It should be normal.”

Smith turned left.

“Do you think your father cheated on your biological mother?” Smith asked slowly. He was very delicate with this and I could tell that he didn't want me to be hurt. I truly appreciated this gesture.

“That should be the only explanation to this!” I told him. “If he didn't cheat on my mother, how come Sally and my mother gave birth within near months? My rough analysis is that my father used to have Sally as his concubine and then, he got her pregnant with or without letting my mother know. When her mother died, he brought Sally in as there was no more disruptions!”

Smith shook his head.

“Your analysis makes sense and trust me, I am humbled. Before we derail, what do you know about Emily? From your experience with living together, does she look like someone who would kill a fellow human? Is she that vicious and cruel?”

I looked at Smith now. He looked so cool when driving but this didn't excuse the fact that his questions were too delicate for my liking. It was too tricky.

“I don't trust Emily…” I said carefully. These words of mine triggered an incident whic

h had remained hidden in my heart.

I had finally remembered.

I sat at the kitchen table, my fingers wrapped around a mug of steaming coffee. The aroma was a small comfort as I tried to settle into the new rhythm of married life. The past few months had been a whirlwind, and I was still finding my footing. The sound of the doorbell interrupted my thoughts. I frowned, not expecting any visitors. I rose from my chair and walked to the front door, my heart sinking as I saw who was standing on the other side. My father, Sam, looked older than I remembered, the lines on his face deeper and his shoulders slumped with a weariness that spoke of more than just physical exhaustion."Anna," Sam said, his voice soft and tinged with regret. "Can we talk?"I hesitated, my mind flashing back to the countless times he had let me down, the broken promises, the torture, and the pains he's inflicted on me... B
