NARRATIVE
“Mia, I’m sorry I’m late.” On hearing the soothing, very familiar voice, Mia couldn’t help but look at his face again. “Clarion,” she sobbed. “How are you here?” Clarion smiled and squat before her. “I’m so sorry about your grandpa’s death. I’m sorry you had to go through this again.” He reached out his arms around her and pulled her to him. And once again, Mia found herself sobbing so uncontrollably, even more than ever before.FLASHBACK…Several minutes ago... In an exquisite Villa at the southern end of the city, in the early hours of the day, Melody hurried into the living room, a small bottle in her hand. "The fuck Lark!" She exclaims immediately she sighted him still curled up on the couch, lost once more in his dream land. "Will you get that ass off that couch instantly?! We've not seen or heard from Mia yet!" She hurries over and swats his back slightly. "Uh? Uhmm." Lark groaned in his sleep, slowly trying to open his eyes. "Gosh, babeee!" Melody frowns and helps him sit up the couch. "So who asked you to take so much beer within a few minutes!" She sighed, removing the lid of the hangover drink in her hand. "Here!" She stretched the small bottle to him and Lark immediately downed the content. "I'm sorry." He said immediately he was done as he wiped his mouth and stared apologetically at his girlfriend. "I must have stressed you a lot. No updates about Mia yet? Where's Lyric, Clarion and Marimba?" Lark asked as he glanced around the living room, still feeling a bit dazed and wobbly. "Hey blockhead, you're finally awake I see." Someone chuckled and Lark glanced sideways to find Lyric walking in the living room from the kitchen. "It's you Ric." Lark smiled. "For how long was I out?" He asked as he let Melody retrieve the now empty hangover drink bottle in his hand. Lyric walked over to them with his hands in his shorts pocket. "Not for long I guess. You have no idea how much stress you caused I and Mel when you fell asleep at the club." "Tell me about it." Melody sighed and walked past her identical twin, Lyric and into the kitchen. "What to do bro? Seems she's really upset." Lark stood up from the couch as he stared after Melody's retreating figure. "Upset?" Lyric shakes his head and smiled at Lark. "Of course she's upset but not because of you. She's worried about Mia's whereabout." "Oh right! Speaking of which, can't we check with her home? Probably she's there." Lark suggested yawningly. "I thought of that too but Clarion insisted on not doing so and causing her grandfather to worry. Him and Marimba went to check with people at the club but..." "They'd be here soon I guess." Lark said and before Lyric could say anything, the entrance door of the villa opened and a tall, broad shouldered blond-haired handsome young man with sea blue eyes, walked inside, looking so worried and exhausted. The friends hurried to him immediately they saw him. "Clarion." Lark said. "Were you able to find her?" He asked. The blond haired shook his head in the negative. "I couldn't find her. I've checked around with people at the club but no one seems to know what's up. Someone said she suddenly ran out after a call." He explained. "This is serious. We have to check with her family then." Lyric stated the obvious, now pushing his hands through his long, dark brown hair. "I agree." Lark said. "Where's Marimba?" He asked on noticing the absence of their eldest friend. "I left him at the club. He's still trying to trace her whereabouts." Clarion sighs. "If only her guards were with her." He added. "We should call Grandfather Mattio right? Clarion is best familiar with her family so I suggest he calls him. Or better still we could contact Butler Hale or Madame Xara." Lyric suggested. "You guys don't worry. I would..." Clarion was saying. "Hold on guys!" They all paused as they turned to stare at Melody as she hurried to them in a panicky state. "Mia is...Grandfather Mattio is..." Melody stuttered as she struggled between words in her panic. She pointed desperately towards the phone in her hand and Lyric on noticing his sister's panicky state, retrieved her phone from her and glanced through it. "Goodness!" He exclaims with widened eyes. "Chairman Mattio Stewart is dead!" Lyric announced to the shock of the others. For several seconds, the group of friends all stared with shock at Melody's phone, all unable to utter a word as they all tried to process the fact. The Helmsman of the Stewarts was familiar to them all as an energetic, kind and healthy elderly man. How and why did he suddenly die? He was Mia's only family. He was everything to Mia and they knew that too well. He meant more than the five of them could ever be to her. But now, he was suddenly dead and on the night when they invited her to hang out with them. How horrible she must feel. "Mia..." Melody gasps as tears rolled down her cheeks. "Poor Mia." She collapsed to the floor in tears. Lyric pushes his hands through his hair several times as guilt overwhelmed him. He shouldn't have insisted Mia come to the party with them. If only he had known. Lark sighs and knelt down beside Melody as he tries to console her. He was completely out of his dazed state now. "Mia I'm sorry. I'm so sorry." Clarion said as he instantly turned on his heels and ran out of the villa.____Presently...MIA'S POV I couldn't help but feel a little at ease in Clarion's warm and comforting embrace. He's someone who understands and knows me more than I even know myself. We've been friends ever since we were kids. At the tender age of five when I had lost both of my parents in an accident, was when I met Clarion. His parents were close acquaintances with grandfather so they had come with him__their last son, to pay their condolences. Clarion had found me at this same spot eighteen years ago. And in his own ways, he had comforted me. I moved in with grandfather since that time and grandfather had enrolled me in the same school as Clarion. We attended the same schools ever since then and became best of friends. We even graduated from the same highschool and moved on to same university where we met our other friends; Lark, Lyric and his twin sister, Melody. We've known Marimba since junior high. And together, after University, we all bought a villa and lived together most times as a family. Amongst all my friends, Clarion holds the most special place in my heart. He's someone I've had a crush on for over seven years now but I don't think he knows. I've never mentioned it to him before and I don't think I would. We're good being friends as it is. Besides, what good would it bring confessing my feelings when grandfather already planned my future so well before his death? "Thank you Clarion." I sniffed as he pat my back gently. "Don't thank me, Mia. This is nothing. I apologize, I shouldn't have let you come with us to the club yesternight." He said apologetically. "It's not your fault. You shouldn't apologize or blame yourself over it." I said, patting his back reassuringly. It's not his fault but grandfather's. He never wanted me to find out about his illness. I should tell Clarion about Grandfather's will and Riley and Aunt Meredith's disrespect. No, I have to meet Aziz Garrett first. I have to believe he didn't mean what he said earlier. "The others are here, Mia. Would you come with me to bring them in or should I go bring them here?" Clarion suddenly asked as he released me, letting his hands rest on my shoulder blades. I wiped my eyes and nod at him. "You can bring them here." I said. I'm not sure I want to meet Riley or her mom or anyone else now. Not even Xara. At least she could have given me a hint but she didn't. She's such a faithful follower of my late grandfather's orders. I raised my gaze and my eyes caught a familiar pair of eyes staring sadly at me. The person bowed slightly on catching my gaze.
AZIZ'S POV After my conversation with Madame Clinton, I hurried towards the garden overlooking the lake which I learnt over time that it was Mia's favorite place to be in. I know how hard this news of her grandfather's death must have hit her. Mia's someone I've admired for a while now. I almost couldn't believe it when the late Chairman made me swear to him right on his sickbed, entrusting his precious granddaughter in my care. I was about entering the garden when my phone suddenly ring. I paused on my stride and glanced at the caller ID. It's a call from my mother, Mrs Jennie Garrett. Why's she suddenly calling me? I clearly told her not to bother me this morning. "Yes." "Aziz, don't tell me you're really getting engaged to that child! You should know better than that!" Her shrill voice yelled immediately the call connected. "Mother, that's for me to decide. It's my decision to decide with whom I'm gonna be spending the rest of my life with. You shouldn't medd
MIA'S POV I sat down by the lake again and carefully opened and retrieved the contents of the parcel. I was able to pull out about two handwritten letters grandfather had written down for me. I immediately picked up one and got busy reading through it carefully. The content made my eyes feel heavy and cloudy again and it wasn't even three seconds later and I already had tears rolling down my cheeks.Letter 1,To my dearest granddaughter, Mia. "By the time you're reading this, I your precious grandpa wouldn't be a person of this world anymore. I must say I'm proud of the woman you grew up to be. It's been my pleasure to watch you grow up from the little 5 year old to the strong, formidable grown up 23year old lady you're today. Mia sweetheart, your grandpa is super proud of you. I'm so sorry you have to live on without me now. I know it's not going to be easy for you to live in my absence with the rest of our relatives. But you must continue to stand firm and not show weak
NARRATIVE “Here you are!” Melody sighed immediately she sighted Mia curled up at a corner of the dark attic. She took several steps close to the sobbing girl and squatted before her. “Mia,” she began. Mia looked up with tears soaked face and reddened eyes. “Mel, I can’t get married to Aziz. I really don’t want to.” She sobbed. Melody sighed once again. “It’s okay. I understand.” She pulled Mia into her embrace and patted her gently. “We’ll find a way through this Mia. I’d support you… as always.” Melody patted her once more. “For a start, let me take you to your room.”__ Moments after Melody had successfully coaxed Mia to calm down in her room, a knock came on her bedroom door and Melody stood up to answer it. On opening the door and finding Clarion there, she smiled warmly at him and let him inside. She gave Mia an understanding nod before she exited the room, giving them privacy as she closed the door after her. “Clarion I…” Mia stood up from the bed on seeing him
MIA'S POV The door of my room opened and an anxious Melody stepped in. "So, have you decided yet?" She asked knowingly, walking closer to sit with me on my bed. I let my mind wander briefly before I gave her an affirming nod. It's been five days since grandfather's death and earlier today, we had laid him to rest peacefully in a private section of his villa (as he'd requested). During the past few days, I had thought long and hard over his letters and after several painful contemplation, I decided I couldn't get married to Aziz Garrett no matter the reason. "You're sure about this, right?" Melody asked skeptically again. "You're sure you wouldn't regret this decision?" I turned to her, smiling warmly over her concerns. "Don't worry Mel, I've thought about this for long. You know me to some extent," I nodded knowingly at her and she sighed. "Alright then. You should get ready. I would inform the others immediately." She said and I smiled. "Thank you Melod
NARRATIVE "What?! Are you certain about this, Beverly?" Riley asked with widened eyes. She was too shocked and excited at the same time over her maid's sudden information. "I'm certain Ms. I wouldn't dare lie to you." Beverly affirmed, a fawning grin widely spread over her cheeks. "I confirmed it with my eyes. I saw her friend, Melody, take her luggage out of her room and I ran here to inform you as soon as I could." She added gleefully. 'Really? Mia's leaving? If Beverly's right, then I wouldn't have to be worried anymore. I don't have to feel down-casted over her engagement to Aziz. I wouldn't be troubled by her presence anymore.' Riley thought to herself as a smirk appeared over her face. 'Wait, but why's she leaving?' She wondered. 'Anyway, that's not my business. I should inform mother right away.' Riley nodded to herself as she immediately stood up from her bed. She'd go see her mother in the living room where she was busy, entertaining their guests. "This is t
MIA'S POV Seeing the surprise in Aziz's eyes, I couldn't help but smile. I glance around at everyone and my eyes met Xara's. She looked so relieved and surprised at the same time. I smiled secretly at her.Turned out I couldn't leave again. Even when I was already at the airport.FLASHBACK It was silent in the car as Clarion drove us to the airport. Occasionally, he'd glance at me but wouldn't say a word afterward. Seems like he was giving me privacy to go over my decisions for the final time before we arrive at our destination. I wipe the remnant tears from my eyes as several thoughts go through my mind. 'Am I making the best choice right now? Wouldn't I regret this in the future? But I can't get married to Aziz when I'm in love with my best friend, Clarion. But it's only a maximum of three years. Isn't that a little sacrifice to save my parents' inheritance and Grandfather's company? Besides,' I glance sideways at Clarion. 'I'm not sure about his feelings. I could be on l
Running in the rain with all the strength she could muster, Mia Stewart had tears rolling down her cheeks in torrents. The rain splashing and wiping against her face succeeded in washing the tears away but it did nothing to stop the continuous flow. Her long blonde hair was wet and dripping chill drops of rain water, while sticking against her scalp and her party mini denim skirt was torn because of how fast she ran amidst the traffic but it didn't matter. Nothing else mattered to her now __ not even the expensive diamond rings she always adorn on her fingers. Mia wasn't the least concerned at this point if she's lost a few of them in her panic. Arriving at the huge exquisite gate of her grandfather's villa, she stopped abruptly as a sudden rush of regret overwhelmed her. If only she hadn't listened to cousin Riley's silly suggestion of going to party with her friends at the popular 'Waves Club' in South Lake Union. If only she had stayed back with grandfather like Xara had

Turning to face Riley, tears instantly pooled in Mia's eyes. How was she to explain what she couldn't understand herself? "Tell me it's a lie. That this is some kinda joke!
