It felt like when you miss a step on the stairs and your stomach jumps before your feet catch up. I didn’t react right away. I just stood there. The idea didn’t land properly. It hovered. Thin. Wrong. Like a sentence that didn’t finish. For a second, I honestly thought he was joking. Not because it was funny. But because it made no sense. I waited for him to add something. A correction. A follow up. A smile that said got you. Nothing came. He just looked at me. That was when it started to feel unreal. Like a joke with no punchline.
