It seemed that Gloria, Tessa, Joanne, and Barbara also hadn't expected Dad to be so ruthless. Disbelief was written all across their faces before they passed away. I shot a look of surprise at Dad. He smiled and said, "Don't be scared. They deserved to die." That wasn't what I was worried about. Where did the gun come from?

Rafe POV For five days, I buried them. Not literally in the ground, but in my head? A dozen times. Maddox dead in some cursed tunnel because he thought rage was strategy. Jaxon talking his way into a blade. Calder bleeding quietly somewhere no one could find him. Evelynn dragged into darkness by the Hollow Mother herself. Every hour they stayed gone, I imagined a new ending. Then they rode into the yard like nothing had happened. Dust-covered. Bruised. Alive.

The instant the doors opened, all four turned their heads at once. You're really not dead?” Cormac stumbled two steps forward, shaking all over, reaching out a hand and not daring to touch her, as if afraid she were an illusion. “Alice… this can't be.”
