The day after my best friend, Sarah Blunt married Patrick, the second son of the Brosnan family, I too became a bride and wed Matthew, his older brother. She married a swimming champion, and I, the rock-climbing coach. We thought we had our futures all figured out. Then, something happened that summer. The four of us planned a getaway but Matthew and Patrick’s baby sister, Megan joined us and our peaceful trip became a crowded affair.  While rock climbing, disaster struck—the rope snapped, and all five of us plummeted into the river below. The brothers rushed frantically to save Megan, leaving Sarah and me at the mercy of the river’s current, battered and tossed like driftwood. By the time the rescue team pulled us from the water, we were bruised, scraped, and utterly spent. In the hospital, Megan and I received devastating news that would change everything.  “You’ve been pregnant for 40 days, Ma’am. How could you put yourself in such a risky situation? Your baby survived, but your friend lost hers.” Shaken, I called Matthew to tell him about the pregnancy. His anger cut through the line. “You’re angry that I went to Megs first and now you’re trying to fool me with a fake pregnancy? She’s my sister—it’s my duty to protect her!” Sarah faced her own storm. Patrick practically scoffed at her grief. “Miscarriage? Do you expect me to believe that? The doctors said you only had a 30% chance of conceiving. I can’t stand women who create drama out of nothing.” Both calls ended abruptly, leaving us stunned as we stared at each other in the sterile light of the hospital room. In that shared silence, we made our decision—we would leave these men behind and start anew, launching a business together. But when the brothers received our divorce papers, they showed up at my door in the middle of a storm, kneeling in the pouring rain, crying through the night for a second chance.

While working with the search and rescue team to save people trapped in an earthquake, an aftershock suddenly struck. Without hesitation, I pushed a hospital intern, Serena, out of the way. However, the force of the movement sent me to the ground, where a steel rod pierced my back, leaving me unable to move. When the aftershock ended, my husband, Derrick, came down with the others. Yet, instead of coming to me, he rushed to cradle Serena, who only had a few scrapes. Then he turned to glare at me. “What are you still sitting there for? Are you dead? Serena’s hurt, and you can’t even help her up?!” I was in so much pain I could barely speak, only able to force out a faint sound. “Honey, I… I’ve got a steel rod in my back… Please… help me.” Serena suddenly burst into tears in fear. “Mr. Nelson, I was so scared. Just now, Ms. Jones pushed me forward. If I hadn’t shifted direction, that huge rock would’ve crushed me!” Derrick, furious, shouted at me. “Gwen! You’re a doctor! What about your ethics? Your humanity?” Tears streamed down my face as I shook my head. “I didn’t. Please, just save me. I really can’t move…” One of the medical team members who came down with him checked my condition and looked worried. “Director Nelson, the steel rod seems to have pierced her spine. If we don’t treat her now, there’s a risk of paraplegia!” However, Derrick yanked him aside. “Save her? Let her walk herself! Gwen, we’re saving lives right now. If you want to act, I’ll put on a show with you when we get home! “Serena’s injured. Since there’s only one stretcher, we’re taking her up. You can walk up on your own.” His cold, departing back left me in utter despair.

Setelah kekasih masa kecil tunanganku tahu aku memiliki penyakit jantung bawaan, dia dengan sengaja mencampurkan minuman energi konsentrasi tinggi ke dalam sampanyeku. Setelah aku meminumnya, detak jantungku tiba-tiba meningkat, rasa sakit di jantung menerpaku. Aku dengan panik merobek satu-satunya obat darurat yang aku bawa, namun air untuk aku minum obat telah diganti dengan air lemon berkonsentrasi tinggi. Setelah aku meminumnya, seketika wajahku menjadi pucat pasi, akhirnya tidak tahan dan terjatuh ke lantai. “Air lemon mengandung Vitamin C, lebih membantu mengatasi mabuk dan menjaga kesehatan.” Charlotte tertawa terbahak-bahak, dia menyilangkan tangannya sambil menatap ke arah tunanganku, bos Geng Rock Roller. “Ethan, akting tunanganmu yang seorang aktris ini benar-benar hebat.” “Selama bertahun-tahun aku menjadi dokter, tidak pernah lihat orang yang minum sedikit sampanye dan air lemon, malah bisa merasa tidak enak badan seperti ini.” Aku menggigit bibirku hingga hampir berdarah, menahan air mata yang muncul di mataku karena kesakitan dan menggenggam celana Ethan yang ada di depanku. “Sayang, cepat panggil ambulans, aku sudah tidak tahan!” Sedikit keraguan terlihat di mata Ethan, namun dengan cepat terhentikan oleh para tamu di sekitar. “Sudahlah, jangan akting lagi, mana ada orang yang mati karena minum sedikit sampanye dan air lemon.” “Ya benar, kamu hanya iri dengan Charlotte yang naik jabatan, tidak ingin bersulang untuknya, kan?” Seketika Ethan kembali ke ekspresi dinginnya, dia melangkah maju, langsung melepaskan tanganku yang menggenggam celananya. “Charlotte itu dokter, ada dia di sini, kamu tidak akan kenapa-napa di pesta.” Aku pun tidak memohon padanya lagi, langsung mengirim pesan darurat kepada ayahku.
