Main Theme

The main theme of this book focuses on the character Setsuna Mudo, a troubled teenager who is in love with his own sister. For him it was all a problem. All this started because one of the angels who loved God rebelled against him, simply because he didn't like the way some angels did their job. In all of this they are involved with demons from the underworld and a "crazy" angel called Angel Santuary. So Setsuna and her friends get caught up in the war between Heaven and Hell, with their connections to each other going deeper than they could ever have dreamed.

Characters

Setsuna Mudo

He is a high school student and the typical handsome but troubled boy who gets into fights because of his bad temper and is constantly rescued by his best friend and senpai Kira, one of the people who understand him best (and who we will later learn is a sword and also the reincarnation of Lucifer). Setsuna is in love with his sister Sarah, an innocent and passionate girl who secretly reciprocates his brother's feelings but is constantly kept away from him by their mother who suspects her son's intentions, a question Setsuna himself shares and calls himself a "monster".

Sakuya Kira

Sakuya was a boy who could have been quite normal, cheerful, intelligent, the pride of his parents; until the day when, at the age of 7, he had a car accident. His mother dies trying to protect him with her own body. He himself will die, but Nanatsusaya, the divine sword of seven souls appears in front of him and offers him a contract.

Alexiel

The Organic Angel Alexiel is one of the most powerful angels in heaven and has three wings. Adam Kadamon created her before he was imprisoned by God in Etemenanki. Alexiel is the older sister of her twin brother Rosiel, who is her inorganic counterpart. When they were born only Alexiel possessed a complete body, thus being the Organic Angel, while Rosiel did not possess a body, only a soul. Alexiel, who loved her brother as if he were her own flesh and blood, made a pact with the God, so that he would allow her to give Rosiel a body.

Plot

It's a cultural appropriation of Judeo-Christian mythology by a Japanese manga author, and the result is simply glorious. At one point, a human is infected by an angelic techno-virus, to make him completely subservient to the main villain, Rosiel, and then, in the heat of battle, he is transformed into a golem.

Alexial's rebellion is not only understandable, it is simple. Alexial rebels against senseless violence and murder committed by angels. And the antagonist, an angel who fought on God's side, is depicted as tyrannical, willing to control and murder anyone to bring about the end times.

Hot Chapters

One of the most impressive pages of this manga is page number 7, especially because as a reader you are just about to enter the story and you can already see in the illustration a kind of dialogue that leaves an impact, it is a good impression. On this page you can see how some characters say that they were defeated by two simple demons from the underworld. This page is a kind of introduction to the book.

Neither gods nor humans...

I, who holds the title of the principalities...

So easily defeated...

What a humiliation! To be defeated by

two annoying little demons...

They serve God and will predict the day of reckoning...

I can't believe it!

I, who for millennia, have guarded the cells of the most fearsome creatures...

I, who am in charge of protecting

the prison of the most

most rebellious angels...

... We call them "angels"...

Damn! Where did they go?!

They must not get it!

Part 3: Conclusion

Angel Sanctuary by Kaori Yuki is a biblical-inspired fantasy manga from the 1990s. It is the story of Alexiel, a Luciferian angel hidden in the body of a human, being pursued by Rosiel, her twin archenemy who seeks to ultimately destroy her. It is also a shōjo manga built around the incestuous love of that human and her little sister. Undoubtedly Angel Sanctuary is not an easy manga to follow, and although it is not new, once you get into it and its codes and if you are passionate about questioning religion you will undoubtedly love it, especially for its tremendous script and excellent illustrations. If you are looking for and want to start reading a manga with unexpected twists, demons, angels and romance, Angel Sanctuary volume 1 is for you.
