CHAPTER ELEVEN

The car rocked as it veered off the main road, its tires crunched against gravel and loose stones. There was a small cabin at the end of the dirt road, covered by the darkness of the night and the dense forest just behind it. It didn’t look that much, but it was home. The car finally stopped, and I stepped out, inhaling the earthy scent of damp leaves and nature, letting it calm my nerves. The porch floors creaked softly against my weight as I pushed the door open and stepped inside. The second it shut behind me, I let out a loud sigh and yanked the wig from my head, letting the suffocating persona of Evangeline Wolfe fall to the floor with it.“I’m back!” I announced my arrival“Finally,” I heard, and Isaac appeared from his room. That scared little boy I would hold in my arms when Victor went on one of his rampages was gone, and in his place stood a taller, leaner version of him with a sharp jawline and longer brown curls that fell between his shoulder blades. “Well, well,” I tease

CHAPTER TWELVE

{Lyra}I woke up with a yawn that felt like it came from my soul. My limbs ached from the awkward way I’d sprawled across the bed, and my mouth felt dry. I rolled over, my eyes were still crusted with sleep, as I reached for my buzzing phone. At first, I thought it was a call, but when my eyes finally adjusted to the light, I realized it wasn’t. “Shit.”Internship – NovaCore Inc. – 8:00 a.m. sharp. It was a reminder for the internship I had managed to get after throwing my non-existent resume at every place that didn't require prior experience. Most of them ghosted me, and some had the decency to send the usual polite rejection emails, but one had actually called back. They had offered me a paid internship, nothing fancy really, just a trial run to see if I was a "good fit for the company." Translation; don't screw it up.Varen may have been my partner in revenge, but he wasn’t in any way responsible for me or my brother, and honestly, I preferred it that way. The unfortunate part wa

CHAPTER THIRTEEN

{Dominic}The morning sun streamed through the curtains, slowly creeping across the floor until it streaked over my face. I growled and rolled over, but it was of no use, I was already awake.I sat up and stretched, shaking the remnants of sleep from my body, but my mind was still haunted by the ghost of a woman in red.She had slipped through my fingers at the very last second, vanishing into the chaos, and no matter how many times I scoured the ballroom after the fire, I had to finally accept that she was gone.Shoving the blankets aside, I swung my legs out of bed, and got up. Ever since last night, my wolf stirred restlessly beneath my skin, it felt agitated, like it knew there was nothing that could be done.Grumbling, I stalked into the bathroom. The lights flickered on automatically, and my reflection stared back at me from the massive mirror. There were dark circles under my eyes, but the faint shimmer of gold still flickered in my irises. I looked like hell, and I felt even w

CHAPTER FOURTEEN

{Lyra}The plaque on the office door read Internship Coordinator, but it might as well have said Executioner. My heart thudded so hard I could feel it in my teeth, and sweat clung to my back despite the icy blast of the air conditioners everywhere.I wasn’t the type to flinch from fear, especially not after everything I’d survived, but being fired on my first day would be a fresh kind of humiliation. And I wasn’t ready to deal with it yet.Still, none of it compared to the time I spent in the elevator. Out of all the people in this god-forsaken city, I had to get stuck in a tiny metal box with Dominic freaking Bloodhound.I still couldn’t get his scent out of my mind. Not surprisingly, it still had the same paralyzing effect on me it always did. The universe was playing a terribly cruel joke on me, but I was just happy to be out of that elevator.I drew in a slow breath, straightened the crooked hem of my blazer, and knocked on the door.“Come in!” barked a voice that reminded me of g

CHAPTER FIFTEEN

{Lyra}I held my breath as Ryker’s boots thudded down the porch steps. He stepped on a twig, and it snapped, but to me it felt like a gunshot. My knees dug deeper into the cold soil as I tried to make myself even smaller.“Don’t look. Don’t look. Don’t—”Ryker stopped, and I felt his eyes sweep over the land. My pulse quickened, and I ducked my head even further into the bush, just as a branch scraped across my cheek.I counted the seconds until I heard his car door open and slam shut. The engine started, and only when the rumble of his vehicle faded into the distance did I spring out of the bush like some possessed witch, with leaves tangled in my hair.I didn’t stop to check if I was scratched or bleeding, I ran up the porch steps and slammed through the door. “Isaac!” I shoved the door open with my shoulder, nearly breaking it off its hinges. “Isaac!!”The house echoed with silence, and my lungs burned with panic. I stumbled down the hallway toward his room, only to slam into a sol

CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Champagne spilled across the table and dropped down onto the carpet. Dominic’s eyes widened as he leaned forward.“Are you alright?”It felt like my brain had short circuited when I heard the word, marriage. Regardless, I nodded quickly, “Yeah. Yeah, I’m fine.”I bent down to pick up the shards, but a server appeared out of nowhere, already sweeping the glittering pieces into a dustpan. I muttered an inaudible thank you, then straightened myself to catch Dominic's gray eyes on me.“I’m sorry,” I said, laughing nervously, “I thought you said our marriage.”“I did.”Dominic looked entirely unfazed after saying something so insane. He swirled the remaining champagne in his glass, his eyes still locked on me. “I have an offer for you,” he said. “One, I think, you’d be foolish to turn down.”My instincts screamed at me to get up and walk. Had he gone mad?“Dominic,” I said, forcing my voice to stay calm, “I don’t know what kind of crazy game you intend on playing, but whatever it is, I don

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

{Lyra}The ceiling fan creaked above us like it was on its last leg, groaning in slow circles while barely pushing the warm air around the musty living room. Varen sat on the frayed arm of the couch, flipping through the contract Dominic had handed to me. His smirk grew with each page he turned. “That’s a hell of a lot of money for a little slave girl,” he said. He kept flipping through, not bothering to look up.“I’m not a slave.” I said through clenched teeth.“Right. My apologies.” He chuckled, as his voice dripped with sarcasm. “You’re a high-end pet, then. Clearly a woman of status now.”I stood up. “You think this is funny?”“Absolutely. Hilarious, even.” He tossed the contract on the old coffee table with a satisfying thud, sending up a small cloud of dust.. “So? What now? What’s the grand new plan, Evangeline?”I met his eyes as I answered. “Isn’t it obvious, I’ll accept his offer. By the time he realizes he brought his worst enemy into his own home, it would be too late.”“Y

CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

{Dominic}The entire hall was so quiet, if a pin dropped, it would sound like a bomb.“That will be all,” I said, and started for the door before the board would come out of their shocked state and start grilling me with questionsAs I closed the door and walked toward my private elevator, I had already started hearing the rustling from inside. They would soon start coming after him, snapping at his heels for an explanation like the damn wolves they were.I exhaled hard, loosening the silk tie that suddenly felt like it was strangling my throat. “Almost there, Dom… almost there.”As I reached the elevator, the echoes of their footsteps grew louder behind me, and I could already smell Rachael’s scent. The sensor on the door immediately scanned my eyes, and I stepped in, hitting the button for the top floor. The doors slid shut, but not before I caught a glimpse of the horrid expression on Rachael’s face as she watched the doors close. The lift hummed slowly upward, and calming elevator

CHAPTER NINETEEN

{Lyra}“Sure, why not.” Dominic said with a shrug.“Sure?” I raised an eyebrow. “That’s it?”“I’m sorry if I made it seem like the contract was a closed case. I’d love to hear your demands.” Dominic said with a smile."Why are you being so nice?" I asked, as my suspicions began to grow.He chuckled. “Contrary to popular belief, not all Alphas froth at the mouth like savages. My mother raised a gentleman.”“I’m sorry,” I said quickly. “It just felt so... well, you know.”Dominic waved it off with a flick of his hand, and beckoned to the waiter. “That’s fine. You’re allowed to be antsy, it’s a big decision.”“Yeah,” I whispered, but I’m pretty sure he heard me.“It’s okay, Evangeline. We’re partners now.”“Partners.”The word sounded strange coming from his mouth. Alpha males didn’t use words like that. Not unless they were manipulating you, or so my mother had told me.“You’re serious?” I asked, narrowing my gaze.“You’re willing to give me three years of your life. The least I can do
