Chapter 11

The candle that spelled out the number 21 had burned out.The icing of the cake had melted and dripped down the surface of the table. It eventually caked all over the gift box underneath it.There was also a bank card set on top of the box. It was Cleo who had given it to Cecil when she moved into the Emersons’ residence. There was another card pinned underneath. The design of the card indicated that it was meant to be a birthday card, and there was a line of text written on the card in familiar handwriting. The first sentence alone was enough to make Cleo clench his teeth in anger. After he read the rest of its contents, he had become so infuriated that he was laughing. His cynical voice was filled with spite at this point.“So this is the first thing you do as soon as you turn twenty-one!! Wonderful! How wonderful!”He looked at the red box containing the wedding gift Cecil had gotten for him with a searing look in his eyes. Then, he grabbed the box and smashed it into

Vinland? If memory served him correctly, Cecil's aunt, Dianne, had migrated to Vinland.Suddenly, he thought about the phone call roughly half a month ago at the banquet. He recalled the look of horror that flashed across Cecil’s face at the time and began to feel like he was close to deducing what happened. All the accumulated worry, anxiety, horror, and severe pain he had gone through had instantly turned into anger. He took the bank card and held it firmly in his palm before walking out angrily. His secretary followed behind him and asked cautiously.“Sir, where are you going?”Cleo frowned and hissed out the words between his teeth.“Vinland.”At Cleo’s words, his secretary quickly booked the earliest flight to Vinland.Cleo never got any shut-eye throughout the entire flight. His mind was in disarray. Countless scenes flashed across his mind, mingled with all kinds of conflicting feelings. When he was playing with six-year-old Cecil in the park, he remembered being

Chapter 13

When Cleo’s assistant took the phone out of the trash can, his face darkened instantly. No one knew Cecil better than Cleo did.She was the type to move on for good once she decided she was done with something. It did not matter if it was Cleo or if it was her parents. Once she was done, that was it.The faint ember of hope that remained inside Cleo had been stamped out completely at that point.Countless people were coming in and out of the airport the entire time. Some of them were there to meet their loved ones, while others were there to send them off.Meanwhile, Cleo stood all alone in the crowd and did not know what to do with himself.Should he go back? Yet he still could not accept it.Should he go to her? Yet he was deathly afraid of hearing her reject him in person. There was no winning in this situation. Whether he chose to go or stay, he would end up losing anyway. His assistant, who stood next to him, could not figure out what was on his mind. Soon, he re

Chapter 14

After a momentary silence, Cleo continued in a somber voice.“To you and everyone else, it may seem like I was the one who raised Cecil, but for me, it was more like Cecil was there for me for fourteen years. “I’m sure you know how my parents were always busy with work, and my brother is more than ten years older than me. Even though I grew up in a comfortable environment, I was always alone.“Yes, I looked after Cecil when she grew up, and she became attached to me since she was a child. She has always been a smart girl and very cute. “I felt like I became a much more cheerful person ever since I met her. When her parents passed away from the tragic accident, I felt pity for her and kept her by my side after that. “Since then, I have always seen her family.”Dianne was moved when she heard Cleo’s stream of confessions.“I understand. Even though Cecil calls you her uncle, you have always taken on the responsibility of a father. “I was aware of how tightly knit you two were

Chapter 15

It was midnight by the time Dianne got home. The light in Cecil's bedroom was still on. She approached and gently knocked on the door.About ten seconds later, the door pried open, and two figures poked their heads out of the gap.“Mom!”“Aunt Dianne?”Dianne was surprised that her daughter was still up. Reya usually became sleepy after dinner.“Why are you still awake, Reya? Look at you, you're disturbing Cecil's rest!”Reya pouted and flashed an innocent look at her mother.“It was Cecil who wanted to show me her childhood pictures and her paintings! Her paintings are so pretty that I lost track of time while I was looking at them!”Dianne found herself getting curious as well and proceeded to join in on the fun.She was far from an art critic, but it was easy to tell that Cecil was a very talented artist. Dianne was awed by the paintings she saw.“How many years have you been painting, Cecil? You paint so well! Have you ever considered making a career out of it?”C

Chapter 16

Cecil slept soundly on her first night in Vinland. It was ten in the morning by the time she woke up. After she had stretched and yawned, she heard a knock at the door.“Are you up, Cecil? I helped Mommy in the kitchen, and we made some buns for you. Come and try it!”Cecil called out that she was coming and then quickly washed up before heading downstairs. As soon as she sat down at the dining table, Reya grabbed a fistful of buns and handed it to Cecil with an expectant look in her eyes.Cecil tried to tease her by intentionally frowning while chewing it. Reya reacted with a grumpy frown as well.Cecil chuckled before taking Reya into her arms.“Did you make this, Reya? They are so tasty! From now on, I want you to handle all bun-making duties!”Reya was delighted by Cecil’s reaction.“Okay, I will cook for you from now on! Will you teach me how to draw then?”Cecil agreed to the deal without a second thought. As soon as they finished breakfast, Reya started to drag Ce

Cecil did a double take when she recognized the voice. She rubbed her eyes and took a proper look at the person in front of her.“Uncle Cleo?”Cleo felt uncomfortable at the way she addressed him.“Now that you’re back with your family, you’re not allowed to address me as uncle again!”Cecil could tell that he was angry. However, she could not figure out why.She had been addressing him as her uncle even when her parents were still alive! There was a brief, rebellious stint when she was seventeen after confessing her feelings for him. At the time, she started to address him with his name, but apart from that incident, she had always referred to him as ‘Uncle Cleo’.Though she could not figure out what his reasoning was, she wagered he was only saying it because he was in a bad mood.“Uncle Cleo, please put me down.”Cleo's expression turned severe at the cursed words again.“Like I said, don't call me 'Uncle. ’”Reya stopped crying when she noticed that Cecil was fully co

Cecil tried to come up with an excuse to leave after changing out of her wet clothes. That was when Reya mentioned she was hungry.Cleo carried her in his arms and went straight to the restaurant without another word.Cecil had no choice but to trail after them.As soon as the three of them sat down, Cleo's phone started to ring.He took his phone and looked at the display briefly before hanging up.Cecil read the display from the corner of her eye. It was Amelia. That was when she suddenly recalled something important. Just as she was about to ask a question, another call came again. This time, Cleo activated the flight mode setting on his phone. He had done it so promptly that Cecil was taken aback by it.Two minutes later, it was Cecil’s phone that started ringing. It was an international call.As soon as she answered, she was greeted by a series of angry outbursts.“Cecil! You damned fox, where did you take Cleo?”“How did you get my number?”Cleo was seated close

Chapter 19

“All things considered, none of the resentment between us matters anyway. She is going to spend the rest of her life with you, and I will never have to see her again.”Every word she spoke jabbed at Cleo's heart like the tip of a knife. He was having trouble catching his breath. There was a sorrowful look in his eyes, and his voice was wrought with pain.“What about me? Don’t you want to see me again?”“Why wouldn’t I want to see you again?”If her previous sentence was a sort of tranquilizer, the following remark came across as a poisonous dart.“After all, you were the one who raised me. I will make sure to send you a greeting during the holiday season, Uncle Cleo.”She spoke in a very respectful manner.Cleo scrutinized every part of her expression and realized he could no longer spot any mark of devotion. She had simply come to regard him as an elder and nothing more.It was a foregone conclusion by this point. Whatever hope was left inside him had been completely vanquis

Chapter 20

Dianne wondered if they had run into Cleo that day. It would explain why they got home so late. She was surprised but could not help herself from asking more questions.Soon, Reya told her everything that had happened that afternoon. When she talked about how Cecil almost drowned, Dianne was horrified. Then, Reya began to recount the conversation between Cecil and Cleo at lunch. She could not remember everything they said, but she managed to quote several phrases they mentioned and mimicked the way Cleo looked when he spoke.“When Uncle Cleo asked Cecil if she really did not want to see him again, it looked like he was about to cry. “Then he said something about how he was only ten years older and that they were not related by blood. After that, Cecil wished him a happy wedding, and that was when Uncle Cleo flipped the table! It was so scary!”Reya had not meant anything by it since she was a child, but Dianne managed to connect the dots. She had always found it strange that
