Chapter 21

FLORAThe factory erupted into chaos as Dante's men burst through multiple entrances. Gunfire crackled through the air, and bullets bounced off metal surfaces, shattering what remained of the glass windows. I stayed low, using the moment of confusion to move away from the chair completely, and finally, my loose restraints gave way.But before I could make a run for it, a strong arm suddenly wrapped around my throat from behind."Don't move," Alvaro hissed harshly into my ear. He pressed his gun against my temple. "You're my ticket out of here."He dragged me backward roughly, using my body as a shield while Dante's men advanced through the factory floor, immediately taking cover behind machinery and pillars. Through the gunfire and shouting, I could see some of Vincent's men retreating, while others fell to the floor as they were hit by bullets."Move!" Alvaro yelled as he pulled me toward a side corridor, drawing me away from the heat of things. The narrow passageway was dark, and th

Chapter 22

FLORAI ran for the staircase, nearly falling over as I hurried along. The helicopter pilot, seeing the outcome of the fight, was already shutting down the engine. Clearly, he didn’t want to be any part of what had just happened.I took the stairs two at a time, and my heart kept hammering against my ribs as I ran down. Please be alive. Please be alive, I kept chanting in my mind, repeating the prayer over and over with each step that I took. When I rushed across the factory floor and finally got to where they were, I saw Alvaro first. He was lying on his back with his neck bent at an impossible angle. His eyes were open but blank. I knew he was dead.In front of him was Dante. He was covered in blood and glass, but his chest was rising and falling with shallow breaths. I was careful not to disturb any of his injuries as I dropped to my knees beside him "Dante?" I whispered, taking his hand. His eyes fluttered open, focusing on me with effort. "Are you okay?" he rasped.Tears stung

Chapter 23

FLORA"The quarterly profit margins are up twelve percent," I said, sliding the reports across Dante's desk toward where he was sitting in an armchair. He still looked pale but he was already on the way to recovery. "In addition to that, I changed the supply chain for the construction companies, which should save us about twenty thousand a month."Dante raised an eyebrow as he studied the papers with interest. "You did all this in three weeks?" he asked incredulously."Those business classes in high school finally paid off," I replied, shrugging as I tried to downplay my growing confidence. "Plus, it's not rocket science. It’s just basic efficiency improvements that no one ever bothered to implement."It had been nearly a month since the factory incident. Dante had been confined to bed rest for the first two weeks. He had grudgingly followed Dr. Chen’s orders after Sofia threatened to have him sedated if he didn't cooperate. Somehow during that time, I had gone from bringing him file

Chapter 24

FLORAThe words hung between us now. It was a challenge I hadn't meant to use, and now I couldn’t take it back. Dante's eyes darkened, and his face hardened into the mask I had seen him wear with his enemies but never with me."Jealous?" he scoffed. "Don't flatter yourself, Flora Miller."The dismissal stung more than it should have and now I was determined to get my own pound of flesh back. "Right. Because you've been so warm and welcoming since the factory incident. You’ve barely spoken to me except about business. You keep watching me when you think I don't notice, then you shut down if I try to have an actual conversation with you.""I've been recovering from nearly dying," he said coldly."And building new walls," I countered. "I'm your family, not your possession, Dante. You can't forbid me from doing anything."Dante remained silent, and the expression on his face remained unreadable too."Is that why you've kept your distance?" I demanded, unable to stop now that I had started

Chapter 25

FLORAThe warehouse felt colder as Salvatore's words hung in the air. I stared at him as I was unable to process what he just said."That's impossible," I finally managed to say after a while. "My mother wasn't… She couldn't have been—""An FBI agent," Salvatore finished, opening the folder he had pushed toward me. "Code name Lily. Assigned to infiltrate the Romano family through Carlo, who they believed was vulnerable to manipulation."My hands trembled as I picked up the first photograph. It was a younger version of my mother in a formal FBI jacket, standing among a group of graduates from Quantico. I had never seen this picture before, and had never even suspected something like this existed."This can't be real," I whispered, more to myself than to Salvatore."Carlo Romano isn't your father, Flora," he said gently. "It was a lie created to protect your mother after she disappeared."I looked up sharply. "What are you talking about?" I questioned.Salvatore removed another document

Chapter 26

FLORAI chose to stay with Mom while she recovered instead of going back to my apartment. It seemed like the right thing to do, especially after everything that had happened. The small two-bedroom house was nothing like Dante's penthouse, but at least it felt familiar and safe. Now I was safe from him, safe from his world, and safe from the choices I’d had to make while I worked with him.Mom was getting stronger with each passing day. The kidney transplant had been successful, and with proper medication, she was finally on the road to recovery. I watched her sleep peacefully on the couch with a small smile on her face. But despite the relief I felt being away from Dante's dangerous life, there was still an emptiness inside me that I couldn't explain. I missed him. I missed his voice, his touch, and even his commanding presence. The memory of his cold eyes when he told me to leave haunted me at night."Flora, are you okay?" Mom suddenly asked, startling me and drawing me away from my

Chapter 27

FLORAImmediately I heard the unfortunate news, I quickly grabbed my purse and followed Dante outside without a second thought. "I'm coming with you,” I told him."No," he said firmly. He was already sliding into the driver's seat. I pulled open the passenger door. "You're still drunk, and you're injured. Either I drive, or I'm following in my mom’s car."Dante's jaw clenched, but he moved over. "Drive fast."My heart hammered against my ribs as I sped through the empty streets. The city lights blurred past us as Dante made calls, barking orders about evacuation plans and backup."How did this happen?" I asked, even as I sped past a red light."I don't know," he growled. His knuckles were white as he gripped his phone. "Sofia wasn't supposed to be there tonight."We saw the smoke before the warehouse came into view. The thick black plumes rose heavily into the night sky. When we turned the corner onto the dock road, the full horror became clear. The massive structure was engulfed in

Chapter 28

FLORAI nodded. "I'm not going anywhere," I said reassuringly. I spent the night in a chair beside Dante’s hospital bed while I watched as he kept drifting in and out of a restless sleep. Occasionally, he would startle awake and call out Sofia's name in a voice that reflected the agony he was feeling. Each time, I would reassure him that she was being properly cared for, and he would settle back in bed as his hand found mine in the darkness, holding firmly onto it like it was an anchor.By morning, Dante was well enough to visit Sofia. I waited outside while he sat with his sister. Her body was connected to various hospital equipment that beeped and hummed relentlessly. Through the window, I watched him press his forehead to her hand while his shoulders shook with silent sobs.Rex arrived with news. "Boss, the fire investigators found something. It was definitely arson. A professionally done job, in fact."Dante straightened immediately, and the grief he was feeling quickly gave way

Chapter 29

FLORAThe silence in Sofia's hospital room was deafening after I finished my confession. Dante was standing perfectly still, and his face revealed the conflicting emotions he was feeling as he processed everything I had told him. I had told him about my mother's FBI past, about Salvatore's recruitment, and about the immense amount of pressure I had been under."So everything was a lie," he finally said. His voice sounded cold and distant.I moved closer to him. I was desperate for him to understand me. "Not everything, Dante. Not us,” I said pleadingly. His laugh was bitter. "Us? There is no us, Flora. There's you, working with the people trying to destroy me, and then there's me, the fool who let you into my life.""I never gave them anything that would truly hurt you," I pleaded sincerely. "I've just been feeding them with meaningless information since, while protecting your most important operations at the same time.""How generous of you," he sneered bitterly before running a hand

Chapter 30

FLORAI watched in stunned silence as Dante transformed before my eyes. The tender lover from moments ago disappeared, and now he had been replaced by the cold, calculating crime boss I had first encountered. He dressed with practiced efficiency, and every movement he made was purposeful."Stay here," he ordered, fastening his watch. "It's safer.""No,” I replied as I quickly slid out of the bed and started grabbing my clothes. "I'm coming with you."At first, he looked like he wanted to argue but he just nodded. "Five minutes."The car ride downtown was tense as the city passed by blurred, except for the streetlights and sirens. Dante's phone rang constantly. His lieutenants reported damage, his associates sought direction, and lawyers prepared for battle. We didn't go to any of the raided locations. Instead, Dante directed his driver to a high-rise overlooking the city. "Command center," he explained briefly as we rode the elevator to the top floor.Inside the place was a state of
