JORDAN I roll on my side as the sunlight streaming into the room smacks against my face. I have plenty of excuses to not work out this morning. I need to get a few more hours of sleep as I didn’t fall asleep last night until the early hours of this morning.I can hear movements in the hallway. I force my body into a sitting position, rubbing my eyes gently. It’s Friday and I have to be at the office before 8 am for my first appointment. I’ve set up a team and they are putting up a presentation to settle on the product designs and total number of toys to be produced for the first batch.I swallow an oath as I bump my knee against the dressing table on my way to the adjoined bathroom. Gritting my teeth, I flip on the light switch, bathing the dark room in bright light that makes my eyes hurt. There’s a rap on my door then Nelson calls out to me, his voice muffled. We had talked about running this morning. I found out there’s a small group and Nelson says it’d be good for me. He wants m

ASTRID Taking a fortifying breath, I step out of my car, keeping my gaze locked on the mountaintop building with throngs of people milling about and chatting excitedly.I can’t even muster a smile and these people here are acting like the sun is out after months of heavy rainfall. A valet approaches. Without a word, I hand him my car key but do not attempt to remove my hand from the door. I need to mentally prepare myself for a party that doesn’t quite spark my enthusiasm. Mom has been texting me all day and Dad sent me a dress - his way of telling me I have no excuse to not attend a party he’s organized for a man I’ve never met.The parking area is brimming with luxury automobiles. I turn to the valet. He motions for me to move away from the car.“I need to move it so other vehicles can drive in.” He says, gesturing behind me.I take a few steps from the car and then turn to see if I have obstructed anyone from coming in. “Oh.” I exclaim when I notice that there’s a small line and

ASTRID My entire body tingles with the memory of where his lips had grazed that night. I drop the basket on the table and lower my butt on one of the chairs. I can’t feel my legs anymore and I’m catching my breath with an unsteady rhythm. Evelyn is still talking, oblivious to the turmoil raging at the pit of my belly. My hands are visibly shaking. No, asking for his help is only going to encourage him. I’ll call Lily.Mom’s figure crosses the periphery of my vision. JORDAN I spoon some spaghetti onto my plate and raise my gaze to meet Peter. “A lot of things have changed. I was driving along Palm Avenue the other day and I couldn’t find the drive-thru. Did he move or something?”Peter chuckles. “Sam. He got married and bought a restaurant.”“Oh.” I say with a small frown.“You sound disappointed. I can take you to his new place sometime.”“No, I found a new spot.”“You’re lucky you have an iron-cast stomach. I can’t bear to eat half the things you throw into your mouth.”I shake my head. “Anna was adventurous. She made me try out a lot of cuisines and encouraged me to be reckless.”Peter throws back his head and laughs. The sound attracts the attention of half the people at the long table, including the blonde with piercing blue eyes.“You’re distracting everyone. This isn't high school, man.”He cups his palm over his mouth and glances around the table. I chuckle and watch him through the rim of my water glass. Peter might be 47 years old but h

ASTRIDA cold breeze rustles through the trees as I make my way to the parking lot. My head is spinning, and my insides are knotting so badly. What was I expecting? That Jordan was going to take me into his arms and kiss me silly even after finding out that I'm his best friend's daughter?I'm painfully aware of the fact that I wanted to feel him again. His shaft penetrates my moist centre, and his lips brush my ear as he whispers incoherently.I avoid the front steps, choosing the dimly dark path instead. This is quite a sensitive moment for me, and I can't bear to be in the company of anyone. Not even my parents. I've not gotten around to telling them about Tristan, and now this? They're going to hate me. Dad. Oh God, it's going to break him apart.Out of breath and eyes itching from unshed tears, I lean against a tree and close my eyes briefly. How did I get here?I hear the leaves being crushed, and then a figure appears in front of me. Despite the darkness, I can see the determina

ASTRID My client is running late. It irks me as I have a penchant for punctuality. Unable to sit still, I pace the floor, tuning out the chatters from the other patrons. It's the third gig I'm taking from my part-time job at the editing firm in Brookland. She had been gracious enough to make reservations in the VIP lounge, keeping us separated from the loud music and laughter. It's Thursday, the twentieth day of the month, and a few days before the election. It's a slow day, too, and I can't wait for it to end.I run smooth hands across my neck while peering at the entrance door."Nervous about something?"I come to a standstill and shift my attention towards the source of the voice. "No, I'm just trying to make the time go faster." I return, flashing the attractive man a smile. "I can stop now if it’s a bother."He chuckles. "Oh, no. The only thing that is bothering me is seeing you restless. Have a drink with me. It will help ease your nerves.""My nerves are perfect, thank you."

ASTRID I roll my eyes as the clip-clop of Lily's heels echoes in the short hallway. She called the second I got home from work. And now that she's here, I wonder what kind of havoc she will unleash.I had a long-ass day. After I met with a firm that needed recommendations for budgeting and taxing, I had a Skype meeting with Bernard, the CEO of the publishing firm where I'm working part-time. I also had a meeting with Mr. Pete, the instant I brought up Georgia, he told me he wasn't interested in hiring an intern as the last one left a bad taste.Lily leans on my bedroom door frame and folds her arms. "Ava Rocks mentioned you in her interview this morning. What's up with that?""Hello to you too, Bee. You let yourself in again. Nice.""I have the card, and your doorman knows I'm your best friend.""It sucks that he doesn't care to know when I'm in the mood for company." I push my laptop aside. I already mapped out a plan for my weekend. I will work till I drop tonight, and I will slee

JORDAN I just about hit the roof as I stare at the numbers on the screen. It appears the sleepless nights and long meetings haven't paid off like I expected.I don't know whether to scream, rip my hair out and slam the computer against the wall, or head to the nearest bar and drink till my belly swells and my breath reeks of nothing but alcohol. I loathe failure. I've spent years building my life, climbing ladders, and reaching the skies. I try not to groan as I skim my eyes across the screen for the tenth time in less than an hour.Experience has taught me that for one to win, they need to keep pushing.Nelson surprises me by sliding a glass of amber liquid across the desk. My shoulder aches as I stretch out a hand to grab it. I need to visit the gym soon. The home gym isn't ready yet, and I can't sit around any longer."A glass of wine won't hurt. We can continue this after lunch.""I don't know what to do right now, Nelson.""Drink. We'll figure something out. I've emailed the gu

ASTRID My stomach grows unsettled as I lean against the bar, waiting for the barman to fix me a drink.I'm alone tonight, and honestly, I don't remember the last time I visited a place like this alone. Lily is still sulking. I texted her this morning, but she didn't open the message. I know going to her house will fix everything, but I don't want to. If she disapproves of Ava Rocks, there's no way she will buy into the idea of me stalking her sister.Speaking of Lisa, I allow my gaze to scan the room for the red hair. I've heard whispers of excitement about her performance tonight. The bar is filled to the brim, and everybody I see holds something linked to the artiste. Will she even blink in my direction? I mean, I've never been in this situation before. And Ava didn't bother with questions. She believes I can do this, and I'm beginning to think about it, too.I turn to see Georgia. She wears jeans, an oversized white crop top, and cowboy boots. Her blonde hair is packed into a neat

ASTRID “You didn't reply to the text. Is everything okay? It doesn't sound like you're at the bar.” Ava says the second I place my cell phone over my ear.“I'm at the bar. I stepped out to make a phone call.”“Who did you call?”Her question surprises me. “My mom. What's Up, Ava?”She exhales loudly. “I'm sorry if I'm intruding. I'm just nervous. I really need this to work. I miss her.”Silence. I close my eyes and rub my temple. I can hear Lisa's voice. It's Beyoncé Tonight. Georgia said she's writing her songs. I wonder if that means she will stop singing Taylor's and other songs.“Has she arrived yet?” She continues.“Yes. She's on stage right now.”She sighs. It's wistful. I want to tell her everything will be okay. I have already met Georgia, and that's the ticket to meeting Lisa - just like Ava said.I doubt I'll ever stop my attraction to Jordan. Why does it have to be him? There are so many men out there, and all my attention is fixated on a man who is my father's best frie
