CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE

031 JOANA'S POV I tried my best to keep calm as my kids left the room, Mirabel kept looking back until I finally blew her a kiss. She smiled and caught it. “Works like a charm,” I said softly, then turned to Caleb, who looked like he was in a haze. “Caleb…” He jolted a bit at my touch, “Yeah… I'm here,” “Caleb, I want you to be truthful with me. When was the last time you slept,” Caleb fumbled with his hands avoiding my gaze, “Caleb…” I said softly, “I'm back now; you need rest more than anyone; thank you for everything, but I would never forgive myself if anything should happen to you.” I opened my hands wide and reached out for a hug. He hugged me ever so tightly but still so loose. “I thought… I thought I lost you…” “I…” I patted his back as I felt warm liquid touch my back, “It's fine… I'm here now, and I'm not going anywhere.” He broke the hug and wiped the tears, with a weak smile on his face. “I'll be going now. If anything arises, anything at all, d

CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO

032 JOANA'S POV “You heard me right, and I'm going to say it again, Joanna and I are getting married.” My whole world froze, but the next thing I heard was a loud thud, Clinton had punched Caleb hard in the face. Caleb was about to launch at Clinton when I threw my pillow at them. “The both of you should stop now. We are in a hospital for heaven's sake. It's either you behave or I'll get security to throw the both of you out.” Though my voice was calm, my breath was unsteady, I hated fights, and seeing them fight in front of me was unsettling. “I am a patient, a recovering one. How do you expect me to recover if two adults keep fighting like children.” Caleb and Clinton stood far apart, “now, I think it's time for you, Clinton, to leave, Caleb and I need to talk.” “Are you really getting married to him?” Clinton's voice was calm, but that didn't hide the fear laced in it. “Whether I am getting married to him or not is none of your business nor concern. CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE

033 CLINTON'S POV I smashed my hands against the wall many times until my hands felt numb; those words Caleb said kept ringing in my head. “Marriage?!” I scoffed hard. “There was no way that she would marry him… right?” I tried to give myself the false hope that I deserved. I stared at my bloody fingers as I remembered that deadly glare my brother gave me. But Joana, her eyes were different. It held hate, but something else was evident. A loud scream turned my attention to the door. It was Louisa. She ran towards me, holding my bloody hand with so much fragility. “Don't touch me,” my voice filled with pain. Louisa's eyes started swelling with tears, “when are you going to understand that she doesn't love you anymore?” Her words were bitter, but I couldn't care less, I stared at her intensively as she went back, her gaze avoiding mine. “What… what… are you doing?!” She tried to catch her breath, her pupils shaving, evident with fear. Louisa

CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR

034 JOANNA'S POV I took in a deep breath as the fresh air rushed through my veins, I stared around my room, and Caleb helped in packing my things. “Should we head to the café to eat first, or do you want to go home?” He asked softly; I let out a weak smile, taking my bag from him, “The café; I am a bit hungry.” He chuckled, leading me out of the room, we headed to the car when Clinton hit the door with full force, startling me a bit. “Clinton…” Clinton dragged me behind him, his hand firm on my wrists but not too tight to leave a bruise. “What are you doing?” Caleb yelled angrily. “I'm meant to ask you that. What the hell do you think you are doing?” I removed his hands from my wrist and walked away from them, staying in their middle. “Clinton, if you have the utmost respect for me, you wouldn't be doing this here, I just got discharged, and you are picking a fight.” Clinton gazed at me with so much sadness. It's good to know that no matter what he

CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE

035 JOANA'S POV After making a dozen cream pies, I retreated to sleep. My kids really wore me out, but it was worth every second. The next day was Sunday, a relaxing day for me, but I had to fix an impromptu meeting with the wedding dress designer. The client was so elated about my recovery that he even made time to visit me. “Hello… is the Là Pierre's Wedding room…” “This is Miss. Joana, on the phone, the jewellery designer in charge of Mr. Jean Claude's project, I would like to shift the meeting to 10 am. I have an appointment with my doctor.” “Sorry for the inconvenience, and thank you very much.” I ended the call and had no idea when I drifted into the dream world. * The appointments with the doctor went smoothly. They removed the stitches on my waist and did a thorough CT scan. It was clearly a miracle to them how I had completely recovered within a span of a week. I drove to the designated place to meet with the designer. “Good day, Miss Jo

CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX

036 JOANA'S POV “It's all your fault, you monster,” I heard a familiar voice; I turned to face Louisa head-on. Her face had anger written all over it. She was infuriated. I sighed softly, “What do you want now?” I really had no strength to continue any conversation with her. Caleb had to return back into the office to get a few things, and now I had to deal with this woman. “Why did you have to return? If you hadn't returned, Clinton wouldn't be having such a hard time.” “When would you stop blaming me for your incompetence? I left for six years, and you could not bring him closer to you, oh wait…” I went closer to her, “you needed me to be close so you could continue to feed his mind with lies. Since I was gone, you couldn't.” A growing smirk made me feel perfect, I made her knees wobble. She stood tall and firm with a mad grin on her face, “I heard you were in a terrible accident, and now your office was vandalized, I guess I'm not the only one that wan

CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVEN

037 JOANA'S POV “What have I done?” I tapped my lips softly, wondering why I had accepted Caleb's proposal. ‘Let's get married…’ I squealed at the words that came out of my mouth. I know that Caleb was just trying to protect me and my children, but I honestly don't know the next step. Why was I being worked up? I can't still possibly be in love with Clinton. No, it was just a thought. Then why couldn't I kiss Caleb back, I was meant to move on to completely forget about the man that made my life a living hell, but here I was, still thinking about him. The soft ding on my phone brought my attention to the table stand. I walked closer to the phone. It was a message from Caleb, I contemplated if I should open it. After thinking about it for a while, I touched the screen, and the message opened. “Hey…” “I am still apologizing for my unruly behaviour this evening; I still don't know what came over m., I understand the reason you don't want to investigate fu

CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT

038 JOANA'S POV “Clinton!!!” I yelled angrily, making all heads turn in my direction. “What?” He turned his face to my side with a grin plastered on his face, “Are you not going to let him know the truth?” I fumbled with the hem of my dress as I noticed Caleb's knuckles turn white. Clinton relaxed onto his chair, “I just want my dear brother to know that no matter how many times he tries, he will never be in your heart.” I hated the fact that Clinton was right; I loved Caleb, but not in the way that he wanted me to. And then there was Clinton, the man who had literally turned my life upside down, but I couldn't deny the fact that my heart still tingled a bit whenever he was around. Did I hate it? No. Do I despise him? Not anymore. Then why?? “Clinton, if you know that you are here to cause trouble, it's better to leave; Caleb is known to not be able to control his temper when around you, and I don't want this to turn into something messy.” Clinton held a smir

CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE

039 JOANA'S POV I gazed into Clinton's eyes. The feeling of betrayal and guilt was evident on his face, I knew he had so many questions. Why did I feel hurt? Why did I feel like I had truly betrayed him? Why did I feel sympathy? Why? He locked eyes with me again. This time, his gaze was soft. His eyes were teary, full of agony. “I will not ask you why you hid them, but… when did you know you were pregnant?” “The moment after we had our first time together when I was comforting you.” “I have been so stupid, so ignorant and arrogant, and I can't even ask you to forgive me, but I wish to see them just once after Jake's full recovery…” I was about to reply when Peter rushed to me, “Jake's awake… he's looking for you.” We both rushed to him, and he looked so happy chatting with his siblings, but Caleb looked angry for some reason. “The man looks so much like you and Japheth.” I heard Mirabel say. “Really?” Jake was really intrigued by their convers

CHAPTER FORTY

040 JOANA'S POV I walked to them, “Why are you still interrogating him? Did he still do something bad?” Mirabel and Japheth jumped into Clinton's arms, “Of course not. We are just making sure that he won't leave you or us.” Japheth said softly. “I won't leave you guys at all,” Clinton tickled them as they ran to Peter. “Peter, please take them out for lunch,” I said to Peter as he nodded and took them out. “See you soon, Daddy,” they waved as they made their way out of the room. I was about to go to Jake when Clinton dragged me, and I landed on his lap. He locked me in his grasp, “Let me go,” I tried to release from his grip, but it only made things quite difficult since I was put in a dangerous spot. “If you keep moving, we might make baby four in here,” Clinton whispered in my ears, and I froze. “What do you want?” Clinton nuzzled around my neck region, “I missed this scent so bad.” I was supposed to push him away and remind him how badly he treated me
