Chapter 1

My agent’s call about the divorce reality show took me by surprise."Hector agreed to this?""Of course." She sounded almost amused by my question. "Your last few live-stream sales didn’t perform well, and divorce scandals involving actresses are trending right now. “Mr. Sinclair even cleared his schedule for ten days to join the show with you. "Take advantage of this opportunity and capitalize on the buzz—at least show some appreciation for everything he’s done for you."I stayed silent.Appreciation.What an interesting choice of word.My relationship with Hector Sinclair felt more like a boss and employee, a mentor and student, or business partners—anything but husband and wife."Sign it." She tossed the contract in front of me.I didn’t move. My eyes stayed fixed on the thin stack of papers. She glanced at me, lips curling into a half-smile. "Relax, it’s not like you’re getting a real divorce.”"I’ll go over the show’s details first. I’ll sign once I’ve reviewed everything."I

A familiar sense of suffocation rose from deep within me, tightening in my chest and lodging in my throat. I couldn’t get a word out. "Mr. Sinclair!" A soft, melodic voice spoke up beside him. "I think I can guess what Mrs. Sinclair is worried about." It was Anne. Hector didn’t say anything, and his silence meant he wasn’t rejecting the idea. Anne let out a light, pleasant laugh before continuing smoothly. "After all, this is a divorce reality show. Mrs. Sinclair has to stand in front of a national audience and say she wants a divorce. “She loves you, so of course, she’s worried. If this turns into something real, she won’t be able to take it back."So really, Mr. Sinclair, this is on you. You didn’t consider her feelings. You handled things too bluntly. It’s understandable that she’s upset." I froze for a moment. Setting aside the fact that she was making assumptions about me—flat-out deciding I was throwing a tantrum—she was actually saying Hector was wrong. She

I obediently accepted his arrangement once again. "You've always wanted to visit Ashford, haven't you? Once things settle down, I'll find time to take you there." "We'll see." I hung up the phone. …Hector and I met again two months later at the recording set. My agent brought me, while Anne came with him. Two cars approached from different directions, stopping at the same time as the doors opened. He was in the middle of a meeting with an earpiece on, dressed in a perfectly tailored suit, standing slightly to the side, his sharp features accentuated. Anne wore a navy-blue belted trench coat, her long hair flowing in the wind as she stood quietly beside him. I tilted my head, observing. I had to admit, the two of them looked incredibly striking together. My agent left me behind and walked over with a bright smile. "Mr. Sinclair!" "Ms. Lane!" Anne merely nodded faintly, signaling not to disturb them, without even glancing in my direction. Over there, the thr

"Otherwise, who’s going to believe you really want to divorce me? They’ll just think you’re acting again. “Use your head. I can’t guide you every step of the way."I opened my mouth, wanting to say something, but a deep sense of helplessness pressed down on me. In the end, I said nothing. For the past two years, I had been trapped in this feeling, as if there was an invisible net tightly wrapped around me. I knew I had to break free, yet I could never muster the strength to do it. When my own energy ran low, I needed something external to push me forward. The director was a young guy, still untainted by the cynicism of the industry. He reviewed the footage. "The emotions came through well. As expected from a seasoned actor." While Hector was doing his solo interview, I didn’t feel like listening and waited outside instead. My phone rang. It was Anne. I was about to decline the call but hesitated for a moment before answering. "He’ll be done with his interview soo

"I do." I thought for a moment before answering, "When I was twenty-one, I was caught in a contract dispute that nearly ended my career. “He stepped in, turned everything around, and paid a hefty settlement to get me out of it. That was the most touching thing he ever did for me." The director nodded thoughtfully. "It seems Mr. Sinclair is the kind of man who helps without seeking credit." Hector smiled lightly and waved it off. "Suzy is a talented actress. She was young and inexperienced when she ran into trouble. I had the means to help, so I did. It wasn’t a big deal." "Second question—what do you think you’ve given each other over the years?"The director turned to me. "Ms. Suzy, you go first this time." I said nothing. Silence stretched as I sat there, lost in thought. Hector let out an easy laugh. "She’s slow to respond, so I’ll go first. “To put it bluntly, what I’ve given Suzy is worth tens of millions. She doesn’t have a high level of education and started wor

Hector froze, his gaze snapping toward me. …The interview ended, and we walked through the hallway toward the living quarters. Hector strode ahead in silence. As we neared the corner, he suddenly stopped, turned around, and asked, "Why did you say that?" "Ah!" I was distracted, checking my reflection in the mirrored wall to my right. After eating and sleeping well lately, I finally put on some weight, and my curves were looking just right. I was quite pleased. Then, I walked straight into his back, hitting it face-first."Which part?" I asked, baffled. His lips pressed together before he hesitated. "The part where you said you don’t love me anymore." I rubbed my nose, still sore from the impact. "Didn’t you say I needed to show more emotion?" He fell silent, his brows drawn as he studied me. Without a word, I brushed past him. …The production team was considerate enough not to install cameras in the bedrooms. I stood in front of the massive king-sized bed

The male participant chuckled. "I heard from the staff that Mr. Sinclair slept on the couch last night. “I always thought celebrities came on these divorce shows just for publicity, but they actually seem legit." The female participant sighed dramatically. "If I had a husband that rich, I wouldn’t care if he had time for me or not. “He could have a mistress or two, as long as he paid up. Hell, I’d personally take care of his mistress after she gave birth if the money was good enough!" "You are complaining that I don’t make enough money again?" "Am I wrong? Do you even make as much as his pinky toe?" The male singer, ever the peacemaker, tried to smooth things over. "Every family has its struggles. It’s understandable." However, his wife was known for her sharp tongue. She shot him a look and snarked, "Oh, you appear like you understand, but I don’t. “These women marry for money, then whine about their husbands not providing enough emotional support. Isn’t that just wantin

She looked pitiful standing there. I frowned slightly. Where was Hector? …The day's filming task was for the three couples to work together to prepare a farm-to-table meal. At the riverside cabin where we were supposed to meet, I spotted Hector. His shirt sleeves were rolled up, revealing his toned forearms, as he swung an axe, splitting firewood. One strike. Then another. Each swing was forceful, almost as if he were venting something. He glanced at me and then stopped, as if waiting for me to approach. Instead, I turned and headed toward the kitchen. Behind me, I heard the sharp thud of the axe as he slammed it into the tree stump. His voice was cold. "You don’t have anything to say to me?" I turned my head slightly, tilting it in thought. "Oh, Anne’s outside waiting for you. You should check on her. She’s about to freeze." His jaw tightened, his lips pressing together in irritation. His sharp gaze fixed on me. "I remember teaching you that everythin

By the time the crew rushed over, Hector was already carrying an unconscious Anne tightly in his arms, bringing her to shore. And I, soaking wet and shivering, dragged myself up the wooden bridge, looking absolutely pathetic. Everyone who witnessed what happened wore awkward expressions. A man who claimed he wanted to save his marriage had, without hesitation, chosen to rescue another woman while his own wife was struggling right beside her. Anyone would feel sorry for the wife. Even the way they looked at me now carried a hint of quiet sympathy. As soon as Hector set Anne down, he walked toward me. The icy river had drained the color from his face, leaving his skin slightly pale. His voice was low and steady. "Anne has severe aquaphobia."I took the towel from a crew member and slowly patted myself dry. After a long moment, I lifted my head. "So?" He said nothing, his gaze fixed on me. "So what, Hector?" I echoed the question in my mind.…The entire production

He seemed momentarily dazed, as if lost in thought. Maybe it was the shift in everyone’s attitude, or maybe it was guilt, but he became noticeably quieter. During group meals and conversations, he no longer casually offered unsolicited opinions or criticisms. During tasks, he took on the more thankless, physically demanding parts without hesitation. Even during the night shoot, when he saw me sneeze, he specifically asked the crew for a blanket and handed it to me. "Thank you," I said politely. "Suzy, we’re married." Under the night sky, his expression was hard to read. "You don’t have to be so distant." "Do normal husbands need a third party to handle their wife’s calls?" the female singer interjected with a sharp-edged tone. One of the show’s segments involved the wives discussing things that made them uncomfortable in their marriages. I hadn’t held back, listing a few things openly on camera—including that. The other women were baffled. Hector didn’t respond.
