Chapter 31

Ember briskly walked to the kitchen, wondering why Kaya had been delayed for so long. As she turned a corner, she nearly collided with Serene. Both Lunas paused, sizing each other up, each one waiting for the other to speak. They hadn’t seen each other since the night of the party, and neither was prepared for a confrontation. Serene’s gaze swept over Ember from head to toe, her face contorting in distaste as if she was witnessing something embarrassing. Ember arched her brow. “Is there a problem?” Serene was taken aback, she hadn’t expected Ember to address her so boldly. But she recovered quickly. “No, Luna,” Serene drawled, flashing Ember a slow smile. “I was just on my way to Thorne’s quarters. By the way, have you seen him? We still need to discuss names for the baby.” She smirked. Ember snorted, rolling her eyes. “I can’t wait to see your face when you realize the cons of trapping a man with a baby. It hardly ever works out.” Serene’s smirk didn’t waver. “What’s with ever

Chapter 32

Ember retreated to her room, snacking on the cookies she got from the kitchen as she watched the courtyard outside her window. Directly opposite her room window was a large maze. She had never used it, never had the opportunity to fully explore the mansion. ‘I should do that sometime,’ she noted mentally. A knock sounded at her door, and she answered tiredly, telling whoever it was to come in. Dorothea entered, carrying new dresses and accessories. She placed them on the couch before walking over to Ember, bowing low. “Good evening, Luna. How have you been today?” Dorothea asked with a smile. “I’m alright, thank you,” Ember replied, lost in thought. She continued watching the maze as she asked, “Have you seen Kaya today? Other than this morning when she first went to work?” “No, my lady. I only saw her once today,” Dorothea answered. A wave of unease bubbled in Ember’s chest. Her eyes remained fixed on the maze just in time to catch movement. It was a large black wolf with streak

Chapter 33

Ember led the way to her room, Thorne following closely behind her in his wolf form. As soon as they entered, he nudged the door closed with his muzzle and shifted into his human form. Without a word, he strode to her wardrobe and began sorting through her clothes while she watched him curiously. To her surprise, he pulled out a pair of male pants and a nightshirt for himself. “How did that get in there?” she asked, genuinely surprised. “You’re my mate. I should have some of my things in your room, and yours in mine, naturally,” Thorne said easily. He didn’t put on the clothes immediately, instead, he walked into the bathroom to take a bath. Ember watched him disappear inside, still not used to someone sharing her space so naturally. Then again, it was his house, she mused. She settled into her recliner and picked up her book, waiting for Thorne to finish showering so she could take her turn to bathe. The thought of telling him about her family flashed through her mind again, and s

Chapter 34

The next afternoon in Thorne’s office, Darius stood beside Thorne, who was seated in his office chair, perusing some documents. “Do you still have no information on the whereabouts of Alpha Ashen and his Luna?” Thorne asked, his tone puzzled. “None whatsoever, Alpha,” Darius replied, peering at the documents open on Thorne’s desk. After a moment, Darius cleared his throat and asked, “What are your plans with Serene, Alpha?” Thorne didn’t respond immediately. He looked over the documents for several more moments before sighing and pinching the bridge of his nose as he flipped them closed. Clasping his hands in front of him, he finally responded. “I don’t know what you mean by plans,” Thorne said. “I have a Luna who, thankfully, is being as agreeable as possible in this situation. Serene is entitled to my roof over her head and nothing more.” “Do you have the slightest suspicion that the pregnancy may not be yours?” Darius pressed, staring Thorne down, but Thorne didn’t notice, as

Chapter 35

Serene glared at Thorne as she watched him sort out clothes from his wardrobe. He hadn’t spent the night in his room, despite her attempt to seduce him by dressing up in lace clothing and perfume. She waited up for him until she fell asleep and woke up in the morning in his bed alone. He was no doubt with Ember. She clenched her fists in anger. “I’m surprised you didn’t kill Matteo,” Serene said, staring at him while he packed. “I’m sure you would’ve preferred him dead,” Thorne muttered with disinterest. “Obviously, he had been itching to get rid of me,” Serene said, scoffing as she flipped her hair. “I didn’t get that image of the situation when he came to take you before. Sounds like you’re the one jumping from one cock to another, looking for influence and god knows what.” Serene watched him with a scowl without responding. Thorne had hated his mate. What had changed so much that he preferred to sleep in Ember’s room instead of in his room with her? She was sexier and more exp

Chapter 36

“Tell me you love me,” Matteo mumbled, his lips in a pout as the maid kneaded his big belly. “I love you, Alpha Matteo,” she indulged him, bending forward to plant kisses on his face. Matteo grunted, irritated. “She doesn’t call me that, and your voice is scratchy, not smooth as honey like hers. Say it properly!” he roared, slamming his fists on the bed in a tantrum. Ever since Serene had left, his temper had been short, and everyone avoided him in fear of his wrath. Even worse was the fact that Thorne had shown him mercy, he wished he were dead instead. Matteo knew people would assume he had surrendered or been pitied by Thorne. Since both of them were still alive, it made sense. Thorne was a formidable opponent, and even as anger and revenge had blinded Matteo, at the point of near death, he had suddenly realized he didn’t want to die. Not at all. And leave all his comforts to who? He was going to get his revenge, Matteo thought, his face hardening in spite. He wanted to kill Th

Chapter 37

Thorne walked toward Ember’s room, surprised to realize he was looking forward to seeing her. Her fearlessness and candid manner was a refreshing contrast to the deference and fear he had grown used to from his pack members and business partners over the years. Somehow, she made him see his faults and despite everything, he wanted to protect her. At the entrance to her wing, he stopped by the guard. “Are there any updates on the missing person case? Kaya?” Thorne asked seriously. “No, Alpha. We’ve searched everywhere, no wolf has come across her scent yet,” the guard responded swiftly. “But the search is still on. Every wolf is on the lookout, sir.” Thorne scrunched his forehead in worry. How and why had Kaya disappeared so suddenly? A sinking feeling settled in his chest. He suspected this wasn’t ordinary. Something was up. He pushed open Ember’s door absentmindedly, forgetting that she had requested he knock. After closing the door behind him, he turned to see her staring at him

Chapter 38

Thorne jogged up the stairs to his room, sweaty and spent. His time with Ember in the maze had turned into a game of finding her rather than finding their way out. She had been a strong contender throughout, managing to evade him until it was time to figure out the exit, where she finally surrendered and stuck to his side after he playfully threatened to leave her behind in the maze. He smiled at the memory. His expression closed up as he approached his door. He definitely didn’t want to see the parasite encroaching on his life right now. He hadn’t thought about his long-term plans with Serene, choosing instead to block it out entirely. But he knew he had to get ahead of the situation, to protect his interests and those of his Luna. He pushed the door open stoically, stepping inside and shutting it behind him. He half expected Serene to pop out from a corner, draped in lace or silk lingerie, intending to seduce him and bend him to her will as usual. But the room was empty. He releas

Chapter 39

Ember lay on the roof in her wolf form, her trusted private corner, the very spot she had leapt from in her last jailbreak. She smiled mentally at the memory. Her tail brushed against the roof in soft thuds as she relaxed under the moonlight’s gentle glow. She lazily watched the small outlines of people moving in and out of the mansion, idly imagining their stories. Her thoughts drifted to Kaya, and she realized how little she truly knew about her. All she really knew was that Kaya’s human parents had migrated into werewolf territory, desperate to become wolves themselves. But their desperation had worked against them and they had been rejected repeatedly, their eagerness making them infamous and shunned, which in turn diminished their chances of ever being accepted into a clan and turned. They had lived on the outskirts of a pack until it was overrun by rogues. In the chaos that followed, Kaya’s parents, unable to defend themselves, had been killed, and she had been kidnapped and tr

Chapter 40

Thorne had gone back to his room to return his documents and pick up clothing to spend the night in Ember’s wing. He hoped Darius and his men would reach the Valley before any trafficking faction took advantage of the refugees. He released a deep breath, realizing he needed to brainstorm better methods of housing them and integrating them into his pack for their own protection and his peace of mind. Soon, he would have to address them as their Alpha, something he hadn’t done since he first started his acts of heroism. As he stepped into the dimly lit room, his eyes immediately settled on Serene. For the first time since her return, she wasn’t wearing lingerie in his room. He froze, taken aback by her candid manner. Without a word, he walked to the closet to pick out his clothes. “You don’t have to keep going back and forth between rooms, I’ll leave,” Serene said smoothly. Thorne paused, turning to look at her but he didn’t respond. “I’m tired of playing the villain, Thorne. I didn
