CHAPTER 41

ABIGEAL“IF YOU two could maybe take a break from bonding over shoes to address this small matter at hand, that would be great.” Jordan's tone dripped pure sarcasm. Katnissa rolled her eyes at me. “What did I say?” She whispered before giving Jordan her full attention.“Like you requested, I sent Steven Gustavo the note but I didn't harm Marcus. I used fake blood. His response was outraged like you said it would be, saying that this was between the both of you and you didn't have to involve his brother. A bit hypocritical if you ask me. Naturally, he wants his brother back.” Katnissa gave her report.“What did he propose?”“Nothing yet. Only that he would raze everything you own to the ground if you touch his brother.”“Does this man consider that we have not only decimated his men but we also have the upper hand before he makes threats like that?” Blaine asked nobody in particular.“You forget that he's dealt us a blow as well. I would advise that you don't underestimate him. Now tha

CHAPTER 42

ABIGEALI LOOKED up as Blaine and Jordan walked out of the basement with the makeup artist. She was dragging a medium-sized box on wheels behind her and chewing gum. I glanced between Blaine and Jordan but their faces gave away nothing.“Well?” Melanie prompted. “Did he go for it?”“I made him go for it.” Jordan said in a matter-of-fact tone.“And the footage?” I asked. Blaine held up a flash drive and I nodded. The artist popped her bubble. “Send me a photo of the brother's reaction, would ya? Would make for some pretty good reviews.” She said lazily.Obviously we couldn't tell her what was going on, so we'd fed her some story about how we were playing a practical joke on a friend by showing him how badly we had beaten his brother up which, if you think about it, wasn't too far from the truth.Except that we were the furthest thing from friends. She faced Blaine and I watched her give him a flirty look as she extended her hand. “Pay up, pretty boy.”Blaine smiled and pulled out a few

CHAPTER 43

ABIGEALMY EYES flew open and met Blaine's startled ones. “Were those for us?” I whispered. “I'm not sure.” He said back as he passed me my shirt. I quickly pulled it over my head and carefully maneuvered my way back to the passenger seat while still keeping my head down. I didn't hear any footsteps coming towards us so I raised my head a little to see through the windscreen. It was fully dark out now and the place had lit lamp lights all around the building so it was flooded with lights. We were still protected by the darkness because they didn't extend this far, but we could see everything going on there. There was a boy standing in front of the security guards, and even from here I could see how badly he was shaking. One of the guards’ guns was still smoking as he lowered his hand. He held up the package in his other hand and said something to the boy.“He must have fired to intimidate the messenger,” Blaine murmured. I looked over and saw that he was fully dressed again and in

CHAPTER 44

ABIGEALFRIDAY ROLLED around pretty quickly. The atmosphere in the house was one of tense anticipation. Even Katnissa was distracted, spending her time down in the basement or out of the house. Blaine was still doing his best to avoid me, and even though it was a little irritating, it was probably for the best. So I let him do his thing. So far only Jordan noticed that was something off between Blaine and I but he held off on commenting about it. I wondered what Blaine would tell him if he asked. The sun started to set, signaling that it was time to get moving. I finished sheathing all the weapons I could possibly carry and grabbed my duffel bag on the way out. I met Katnissa in the living area, wearing her accessorized boots. We gave each other the onceover and she smirked. “Someone's prepared to go to war.” I shrugged. “There's no such thing as being too prepared.”“Amen to that.”Jordan came out with Blaine behind him. They were both dressed in black, tight-fitting clothes. “W

CHAPTER 45

ABIGEALYOU COULD cut through the tension in the room with a butter knife. Every second that ticked by was punctuated by a roll of sweat down Steven's face and into the collar of his white shirt. He also knew that every second ticking by was taking time off his brother's life; I couldn't imagine the stress he was under. Finally he pivoted and left the banister. I thought he had left until I saw him appear on the ground floor, moving towards us with a determination that had me warily raising my weapon and aiming it at him. He shot me a disdainful look. “Relax. It's not like I could try something and it won't end up in a bloodbath.”He took a pen out of his jacket pocket and scribbled something on the document before handing it over to Jordan. Jordan took it, looked down at it and frowned. I looked over and realized he hadn't signed the document but had instead doodled a hand with the middle finger held up.Before any of us could react, Steven yelled. “Marcus. Now.”I whipped my head

CHAPTER 46

ABIGEALI COULD hear the voices, but not the words. I was lost, floating in the dark, the ringing sound my only companion. The voices were muffled and I couldn't make out what they were saying. Frankly, I didn't care. It was peaceful in this dark space and I could move at will. Except for that annoying ringing. Where was it coming from?I followed the sound, spotting a small dot of light in the distance. Perhaps I could reach it and turn it off, then just stay here and sink into the peace. But the closer I got to the light, the bigger and brighter it got until the light swallowed me whole. The peaceful darkness disappeared and I was bombarded with images and emotions. The heat. The panic. The flames I could never get away from.Zeke!Someone was shaking me repeatedly. I tried to free myself. I needed to run, needed to go before the flames consumed me. “Abigeal!”My eyes flew open and I took in huge gasping breaths as I stared into blue eyes. I gripped his arms and held on. “I nee

CHAPTER 47

ABIGEALTHE BRIGHT shaft of sunlight pierced through my closed lids. I let out a groan and rolled over, pressing my face into a pillow and back into darkness. I hadn't been able to fall asleep until four this morning and it had been going surprisingly well for a change.Until I got attacked by the sun.“I thought you were supposed to be some sort of trained soldier. The soldiers I know don't sleep in this late.” A voice I didn't recognise scolded me. I slowly lifted my head and looked in the direction of a voice. There was a woman standing beside the curtains, one hand still on the blinds and the other on her hip glaring at me with a look of heavy judgement.I was being judged by a Latina housekeeper. The day hadn't started and it was already strange.“You know many soldiers?” I asked as I rolled over. She gave a shrug. “I know enough.”“Then you know they don't sleep through the night, so I suggest you stop looking at me like that and get back to whatever it is you do.” I said in

CHAPTER 48

ABIGEAL“I'D LIKE to know what you think the reason why she's so fixated on me is, but you don't have to say anything if you don't want to. It's not my business.” I said in response.“You keep saying that.” He sighed. “I’ve never told this to an outsider, but oh well.” Deep breath. “Melanie and I dated…sort of.”I turned to look at him. “I'm shocked to the bone," I said sarcastically. He threw a pillow at me. I let it hit me in the face and drop. “Fine, yes, you might have gotten that impression. But what you didn't know is that it was all a lie she and Jordan made up.”That took a turn I wasn't expecting. “How so?”“I can't give you the details of what happened, but something happened and I lost my memory and was in a coma. Melanie was constantly talking to me during that period and her voice brought me back, but I didn't know who she was and...”“Since she was the constant one there, you assumed.” I finished for him.“Yeah, exactly. My mental state was very fragile then and they d

CHAPTER 49

ABIGEALWHEN WE boarded the jet for the return flight to Brooklyn, the staff lined up at the entrance to greet us. I caught someone staring at me and realized she was the same person who had walked in when the motion of the plane had made me fall into Blaine's lap. She had the same little smirk on her face as the last time and when I'd walked past her, I turned to look at Blaine. From the way he was trying hard not to smile, I knew he had caught the look. “I told you so,” I hissed.“For someone who doesn't care about a lot of things, you're thinking too much. I told you to let it go.” He said back.“What are you two whispering about?” Jordan asked without looking back at us. Blaine looked at me and I saw the intent in his eyes. “Don't you dare.” I warned with gritted teeth. He kept looking at me as he raised his voice. “Nothing, really. Abigeal here is just a little paranoid about a small matter.” He smiled at me.I was going to kill him.“Abigeal? Paranoid?” Melanie arched her b

CHAPTER 50

ABIGEALWHEN THE car service finally got to Blaine's house, we found everyone assembled outside to greet him. They immediately swarmed when he got out of the car, leaving me and the chauffeur to offload the baggage. I started to carry them inside when I felt something grab my leg and looked downwards to see Eleanora smiling at me with all of her two teeth. “Hiii” she babbled, then giggled like she had just said the funniest thing.“Hi, kid.” I said in response, looking at her expectantly. She just continued to giggle so I tried gently prying her arms off my leg. They wouldn't budge. For baby's arms, they were quite strong.Seeing no other alternative, I started to walk into the house carrying luggage with her still attached to my leg. She squealed loudly and I looked at her again in worry, unable to tell whether it was a sound of pain or joy. When I lifted the leg she was holding a took a step, she squealed again.Oh. Okay.“Nora, get off her.” Dolores reprimanded, coming over to
