CHAPTER 81

CAILA'S POV“You said no more art exhibitions,” I laughed when he opened the door for me to enter into the restaurant. It was a restaurant but the whole places was literally crawling with art works. The walls, the tables… everywhere. “At least it's not an exhibition this time,” he laughed as he led me to one of the empty tables. He pulled a chair back for me and I sat on it. “Well, yeah.”“It's actually a sea food restaurant,” he told me. “I totally forgot to ask if you were into sea foods. Because you were giving the vibe of someone that's into that.”Vibe? That was crazy. Apart from the feeling that people get about me being an artist, there was nothing else they could guess right. There was a time I had gone for an event with Aria when we were still in high and someone came up to me and wanted to start a conversation with me and asked me how good I was at explaining Tarot cards, thinking I was into astrology, fortune telling and mystical things; all because of the way I looked. CHAPTER 82

CAILA'S POVI sat down in my studio, the familiar scent of oil paint and canvas filling the air, I breathed in deeply. The smell, along with the R&B songs flowing from the stereo combined to give me that sense of peace I had when I painted. It was one of those songs that effortlessly wrapped around my emotions, and made me dive into a deeper level of concentration as I painted. Liam didn’t know it but he had given me more than just a reason to pick up my brush and begin painting again. The competition had given me a sense of purpose and it was an opportunity for me to show that I was actually good at something - that it wasn't just Aria that was great at everything but I was good too. And if I won? Well… I couldn't think about that at that moment. “Come on, show me what you're doing,” Liam requested when he face timed. I had been painting for house and while I was taking a break, he was the only person I felt like speaking too and luckily enough for me, he had picked up immediately

CHAPTER 83

CAILA'S POV“Wow, that is really impressive,” he said as I explained to him what my painting was about. “Really, really, impressive.”That was after he had given me lots of compliments about the art piece itself. I had told him I was ready to submit after I had spent several hours looking at it, hoping I had gotten everything right. I had seen lots of things I wanted to change because it was my critical side looking at it instead of my creative side, but I had to leave it like that before I ruined it. I was glad that Liam had loved it. It was a good sign already. ***“You did it!” he said as he drove me back from the place I had submitted the work. “Thank you!” I said to him. “If you hadn't encouraged me as much as you did, believe me, I would have been the only one to set my eyes on it.” I laughed drily but it was the truth. Lots of art works I had prepared for competitions had never left my hands because when was done, it always felt like there weren't good enough. “So you owe m

CHAPTER 84

JACE'S POV“I said weaknesses not strengths!” I growled as I stood up and begin pacing the office that was now Kai's as Frank had been moved to another office. I was frustrated, and that was putting it lightly. Days after Victor had called me, I had been unable to reach him. It was like a one way device that he used to call. Kai had tracked down his location to one of the shell companies that he used but I couldn't go there as it would have been just a stupid move. And here was Kai telling me how Victor was almost impossible to beat, how if I didn't take time to think about everything Victor was going to ruin my company. There was no way I could go to law enforcement, there was already proof that he had the law enforcement agency in his back pocket and kept them on salaries. I couldn't use force, Victor already had lot of forces behind him, I'd be ruined before I made a dent on him. But then there was something else that was going to work but I needed to find the perfect time and pl

CHAPTER 85

CAILA'S POVIt was few hours to when the result of the competition was going to be announced and saying I was scared was me lying… I was nervous… scared… and had several emotions running through me all at once. Liam had lied to me. But in his words, “I knew you wouldn't have submitted your work if you knew it was going to be this big.” Yes, he had intentionally decided not to tell me that I had just submitted my work to a very big National competition that was going to be judged by lots of critics. But he wasn't wrong about me not submitting if I knew about it… and to think the announcement was going to be made on national TV. I was glad there weren't going to announce the last person though… I would have died from the embarrassment. “Come on, breathe,” Liam said to me when he saw the look in my eyes. I knew I had gone pale. This was why I hated competitions. But I was here to learn from the people that won. I was sitting on the sofa beside Liam in his office watching the announceme

CHAPTER 86

CAILA'S POV“Are you okay?” Liam asked We had decided to meet in his office and go through my mails and also create a draft for the way I was going to announce that he was my agent so things could pass through him before getting to me. The message I had gotten from Victor the previous day had shaken me up badly and I had postponed the meeting with Liam till the next day, but even then, I was having a hard time focusing. I have won the competition, I had gotten the money, I should be happy but I wasn't… the broadcast wasn't just aired in a few states in the US but also around the entire country and some other countries and Victor had gotten wind of it.“Yes, I'm okay. It's just overwhelming,” I lied to him. I couldn't tell him the real issue. He didn't look like he could help with that type of issue and I couldn't drag him into my personal problems. “Are you sure?” He asked, his eyes never leaving mine. “Yes, I've never being in this kind of situation before and it's driving me re

CHAPTER 87

CAILA'S POVI had tried to sleep but it was impossible because my brain just found a way to keep bringing up Victor's face. I had dreams about him laughing at my attempt to ignore him, taunting me.This was the first time in a very long time that I had been unable to sleep in twenty four hours. I had shut my eyes for a few seconds but then it just kept opening. I was tired but I couldn't find sleep.I had intentionally stayed hidden. I was either locked up in my room or locked up in the work space, intentionally hiding from Aria. And I had not seen Jace for a while and even though there was a part of me that wanted to see him, it was better he stayed away for now because I knew my face was going to betray me. It was going to tell him about everything that had been happening to me while he was away and my lips would follow.I checked the time and it was only a few minutes to five am, but I knew that sleep wasn't going to come. If I was going to sleep, I would have slept in the night. I

CHAPTER 88

CAILA'S POVIf I had felt tension before, it was nothing compared to the way I was feeling after Victor's text. I had lost a night of sleep again and every message I got seemed to cause a mini heart attack. He had sent the message at six pm the previous day and it was already five pm of the next day and I had not gotten any sign of what he had done. Was he toying with me? He was definitely toying with me. It was like he was watching me through a screen and enjoying my agitation. “You still seemed disturbed Caila,” Liam noted. He had been trying to take me out on a date for days but I kept postponing it. I had finally decided to go with him to the breakfast spot he had taken me to before. Everything smelled great but when I placed it in my mouth and tried to chew, it just tasted bland. I had lost my appetite. And even as I was with Liam, I was still distracted. I turned to look at him and saw the genuine concern on his face. He looked like he could just take my problems away if I ju

CHAPTER 89

CAILA'S POVJace came into my room later that night to ask me about what had caused the fight because Aria was not saying anything to him; then I told him to go ask her because she was the one that had brought the aggression to me.The next morning as early as 7am, I called Liam. My fingers had flown to my phone on their own accord and dialed his number. I had tried to cancel it when I realized how it could count as me disturbing him but it had gone through already. “Are you okay?” he asked immediately he picked the call. “I was wondering if I could meet you at your place? This house is annoying right now.” I said totally ignoring his question. “Like right now?” he asked and I could hear the surprise in his voice but it was expected. Call someone I had barely known for a month about visiting them before eight am? That was strange but I didn't want to be at the house.“Is it too early?” I asked, hoping that he didn't tell me no. The last place I wanted to be was here and I couldn't

CHAPTER 90

JACE'S POVFor days I had tried to have a quiet moment with Caila so I could know exactly what was going on with her but she was making it impossible. When I was free, she was either holed up in her room, or outside the house or locked up in her work space. The argument she had with her sister just made it worse. Aria's sudden distance was even more infuriating. We had made significant progress over the past few weeks, and I thought we were finally on the same page. But now, she seemed to be pulling away, leaving me frustrated and confused. Her new habit of leaving for work before dawn was particularly annoying. I'd wake up to go to her room and find her bed arranged like she had not slept in it, the only thing I was left with was the lingering smell of her perfume. She'd return home late, locking herself in her room without so much as a whispered greeting. The masquerade ball, which was just around the corner and we were going together and I had to find a way to be on the same page
