When I finally escape from Jennifer Biggins and her kiss-ass pitch trying to get me to do an interview for the new online magazine she’s starting and make my way back to the drinks table, I find Sofia’s seltzer glass but no Sofia. Assuming she’s gone to the bathroom, I wait a few minutes, but after she doesn’t return, I start to get worried, so I go find Carlos.“Hey, have you seen Sofia?”“Yeah, I saw her heading for the door a few minutes ago,” he replies.“What?” I reply, stunned. “Where was she going? Why didn’t you stop her?”“Stop her?” he asks. “I assumed you’d sent her to go do something.”“Do something?” I sigh. “No, she was supposed to stay here with me and—”I freeze. My words catch in my throat when I see her. Gretchen is passing through the door heading into the corridor leading to the larger of the two entertaining rooms set up for tonight. She’s dyed her hair and is wearing something inconspicuous, but I’d recognize that walk anywhere. And when I see her, I realize what

Four Years Later…I feel like a proud father, sitting with the rest of the families, watching as the students take the stage in cap and gown to accept their diplomas. Only to my wonderful NY grad, I’m not father, I’m Daddy. After accepting my marriage proposal, Sofia then accepted my offer to leave her secretarial position at my company and attend NYU for four years to earn her bachelor’s in psychology. She also minored in accounting so she could “make sure I never accidentally threw away my entire fortune.” That was entirely her idea, and it only made me love her more. It turned out that first time with me hadn’t gotten her pregnant, and so we got her on the pill right away so I could go bare for the subsequent four years.“Sofia Cruz,” the announcer says over the loudspeaker. Unable to help myself as my gorgeous wife steps out onto the stage, I stand up and clap my hands together like my favorite NBA team just won the championship. I whistle and holler, causing her to blush.“I neve

“There are three units on each floor except the fifth. That one big unit,” Amelia tells me as we make our way up the stairs. Amelia shoots Felipe another look, but this one is filled with sadness.“What?” I ask, wondering what’s going on.“You remember Felipe’s younger brother Knox?”Oh, I more than remember. Felipe’s brother Knox is a year older than me. Felipe’s sister Glenda married my brother Cillian. His parents weren’t too happy about that because in our culture, most marriages are arranged. With Felipe, his parents didn’t have control over him. He’d ventured out and built not only a name for himself but wealth too.He still had them reach out to our parents for Amelia’s hand, and his father agreed. With Glenda and Cillian, it hadn’t been so easy. They’d fallen in love, and Cillian did his part in the arrangement with Glenda, but the Andoras told him no. Glenda pushed back and said she’d do it anyway, which ended up ripping the families apart. They wanted Glenda to marry someone

“Come on, Knox, what about the blonde?” Jack nudges me with his elbow, and I look up from my laptop.“Out of your league,” I tell him and go back to typing.“You’re wrong,” I hear him say as he keeps talking with Andy and Harris. The four of us came to the quad to study, but I realized pretty quickly that I’m the only one actually doing it. They’re watching girls go by while they bet on which one could fuck her. I must be the only one with reasonable self-control and a fifteen-page report due tomorrow.“You couldn’t even get her number.” Harris shakes his head.Jack rolls his eyes. “I bet you couldn’t get her number.”“Yeah, and what will you give me when I do?” Harris is taking the bait, which is a mistake. I know the blonde they’re talking about, and her girlfriend would laugh in their faces.“I’ll buy your beers tonight.” Jack holds up his finger before Harris can agree. “But if she doesn't, you're buying mine.”“Deal,” Harris says and takes off across the quad.“Sucker,” Jack says

I stare in shock at Knox. I knew at some point I’d see him around, but I thought it would be in our building. I always take the stairs, so I’m sure that lessens the chance but I also peek past the gates before I enter to make sure that I don’t see him. I do the same before I come down the last flight of stairs. For the past two weeks, that plan has been working because I haven’t seen him at all. With how big the campus is, I thought if I happen to spot him, I could easily remember when and where I was and then avoid that place. Of course, even with all my planning, I still manage to run into him. Literally. How is this my life? All of the creeping around was for nothing, and of course, I’m again running right into his giant body that’s as hard as a brick wall. I swear it’s even bigger than before.“I’m sorry.” I force the words past my lips even though my heart is lodged in my throat. He’s more handsome than I remember him being. Each time I see him, he looks more and more like a man.

We walk in silence but then I wonder if I should make small talk. I can’t be weird—or weirder—if I keep my mouth shut. That sounds like a solid plan. Too bad I don’t do it. “How come your family hasn’t selected a wife for you?” He lifts a brow as he cocks his head my way.“How come your parents aren’t taking offers for you to get married?”“What?” His question completely catches me off guard. I once again stop walking. “They aren’t? How do you know that?”“Just heard people talk.” He shrugs absently.“About me?” Panic starts to rise again.“I mean, I’m sure you got a lot of offers before they shut it down. People are going to talk if they pretty much put out a blanket statement that they’re not entertaining them. You didn’t know?” I shake my head. “Probably because you’re in school.” He grabs my hand and pulls me to start walking again.“You’re holding my hand.”“Yeah, I kind of knew that when I grabbed it.”“Right,” I say absently. My mind is still whirling from everything he said. H

“Fuck.” I toss the food from the pot into the sink and run cold water over my burning fingers. “Okay, so plan G it is.”“Is something on fire?”The sound of Violeta’s voice surprises me so much that I turn around too quickly and sling the pot of water on her. “Shit.” I grab the paper towels as I throw the pot on the counter and go to her.To my shock, she starts laughing as I try to wipe her down. “Knox Andora, you are a mess.”Glancing around the kitchen, I see what I’ve done as a collective whole instead of just running around and trying to get things ready. Pans are piled up in the corner, flour spread out on the counter, a broken egg on the floor, and I think that’s spinach stuck to the fridge.“Um, surprise?” I shrug sheepishly, and she laughs again. Fuck, I love the sound of that.“What on earth are you trying to make?” She looks behind me as she takes the towels out of my hand and presses them to her dress. “Is that spaghetti or tacos?”“Both?”“Did you invite me to dinner not

I so don’t want this night to end, but I’ve been here for four hours now. I can’t recall the last time I had this much fun. Since the incident at the bakery, I built Knox into something he isn’t. I think my hope was if I remembered him as horribly as I could, then maybe the crush I had on him when I was younger would die out. It hasn’t.Tonight, I got to see that some of the sweet boy I met all those years ago at my older sister’s wedding is still there. I remember him asking me if I wanted him to carry my flowers because they looked heavy. They were heavy because my mom—being my mom—went way overboard with all the bouquets. My shyness won out that day, and I don’t think I ever answered him.“Can we take the stairs?” I ask when we exit his place. He insisted on walking me back to mine even though I’m only two floors down.“Of course.” His hand goes to my back. “Elevators bother you?” he asks, and I nod. “You did okay earlier.”“I was distracted.” He smirks, and I playfully elbow him i

8 - Knox.

After banging on Violeta’s door last night and then trying to call her, I got nothing. Deciding that she was either pissed off at me because Lisa showed up, or she was tired of being around me, I gave up and went to bed. Although can you call it going to bed if you don’t sleep? Basically I lie awake on a mattress all night, wondering how I managed to fuck up one of the best nights of my life.On top of that both of my parents called me this morning. It’s almost like they were working together to make my day miserable. My dad called first, and he complained about his company struggling and how Felipe has done nothing to help him. I hate it because I have sympathy for him. I understand that he sees his son with so much more success than he ever had, which probably makes him jealous. But I also see that he’s suffering at work and has no one else to turn to except Felipe. He’s made his bed by treating him like a child his entire life and trying to control him at every turn. Then when he c
